You are the designer that is your responsibility to tell the client to buy a license. Or just use free font. Extended is for big companies or projects which i assume you are not using right now hence you are a beginner.

I have a client in a situation, they've found a free font on a website and now the designer asks them to pay for the past use, but it was free on the website, do they have the right to tell you to pay and not just remove it?
Was it a paid font then turned free or? Because it was free from the start they shouldn't have to pay. Unless it was FREE for personal use not COMMERCIAL USE. You basically pay for a license for it. It's free you can do whatever you want bro. The typographers choice to make it paid or not. It was something along the lines of “You can use the font with the application it came from” or something… But there was also a link to license the fonts for commercial use with some ridiculous monthly subscription fee… Like, can I just use Arial (or Helvetica, for example) to letter my comics or print my book with, without getting sued or not? 😂😅 I’ve been looking around, but I don’t get it… EDIT: I just discovered Google fonts. They claim to be free for commercial use. I guess I could go with those…

@@lyanahajsaleh1360 You can use the font on different projects because you have the license for you that is fine. Are buying fonts as a graphic designer necessary though? I mean, seeing that there are so many free fonts available? how long does a graphic designer usually go without buying fonts.
There are many sites which provides premium fonts for free. But the question is what if I get a font from that site, use it on a project and also share that font file with the client, how does it will effect me? What problems I & the client will face in future?
Many fonts are stealing the fonts mate be careful which sites you are using. Most font licenses don't have the right to re-sell. I recommend using free fonts and sharing that with the client is fine. If it's a commercial font get the client to pay for the license if not just use free fonts to be safe. Technically if you use the font for a paid project you could get sued some countries don't care as much as others.
Some font shops are a one-man show which probably would be easier I'm sure there is an email just go to the contact page or find their email on the bottom of the page possibly.

Thank you for this video, I hope you see my question and reply to it, If I designed books of low content for (Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing) and I want to use commercial fonts in these books can I use commercial fonts or no ?
You can use commercial fonts yes, it's a product so either use free commercial fonts or paid ones.
Thanks, man for the good explanation and I have a question that I'm confused about can we able to use any font like personal use licensed fonts for logo design and trademark for client ??? I read on google result from its saying you can use any fonts for logo design but you cant sell code used to render the font..
Personal use should not be used for CLIENT WORK.
So if I download a FREE font from FontSquirrel that means that it is usable for commercial use? I'm checking the font licences but I'd like to 100% understand this
YES those fonts are free for anything.
Thank you for the video, I have a question. Can I use paid fonts for commercial use if I convert them into outlines?
Yes you can!
if i buy a webfont i can use it on my site as the logo and anywhere for commercial use ok?
Yeah should be fine just check fine print. Web and desktop license is different
hi! i am currently designing some instagram story games, so nonprofit, just for fun. does dat mean i can use fonts that say for personal use only? or do i have to buy the license?
If its for you then its personal if it's for a client then get license.
@@JeremyMuradesign thanks a lot!
Does putting a font in my design portfolio (branding) would be considered personal or commercial use? I can’t really publish it because im still learning the legal use of typefaces.
Personal Use.
I'm still confused about the commercial and extended commercial license. i'm a beginner in freelance graphic design, and what if i have a client for a project like i'm designing album covers, flyers, brochures, and some licenses have those things like "up to 5,000 physical or digital end products for sale". i mean i don't think it's in my control how it's going to be used (the end product). is it still my fault if the client failed to comply with those rules?
You are the designer that is your responsibility to tell the client to buy a license. Or just use free font. Extended is for big companies or projects which i assume you are not using right now hence you are a beginner.
@@JeremyMuradesign so fonts that are free for personal and commercial is more safe to use (both for client and designer) than buying fonts like those? it's just that some of them are really nice to look at haha but yeah i guess in my stage i should lean more on free fonts. another question, if a client like a certain design that used a paid license font in the image, yeah i should tell the client to buy one for themselves and read the rules. where does my responsibility end in terms of license use in a font for a design? like how a client is gonna use it for their own commercial use. it's just that i get really anxious if i think i'm gonna make something wrong
@@pinktrash2720 Yes its safe if it's a free font it will tell you when you download it on the website use font squirrel. If it's a free font you can send it to your client. If it's a paid one then client needs to buy their own license and you need a license.
@@JeremyMuradesign thank you very much! i can't believe you replied to my questions. just subscribed to your channel and it's really helpful, thanks again
@@pinktrash2720 Totally cool glad you subscribed!!
What license would I need to brand a company I want to start. Im mostly going to use the font along with a logo and use it in youtube videos. Im going to being selling packs online so which license would allow me to do that?
If you are going to put the font on packs it would be good to get commercial license, if not then you can just use desktop license.
Jeremy Mura Thanks Jeremy 🙏
Jeremy Mura one more question. When a license says “1 Project” what does that mean? I can only use it one time?
@@Ghost_Hardwar3Yeah 1 commercial project if you did like an identity project for a client or maybe it's like 1 logo pack for example and you use the font on the covers etc
Jeremy thanks so much for the amazing video! I just got accepted into the UA-cam Partner Program and I am monetizing a few videos now. What license should I buy? Desktop? If the channel keeps growing will I need to change the license?
I've never had an issue man with fonts. I use both free and ones I've paid for you won't run into problems imo. and yeh desktop is fine.
@@JeremyMuradesign Thanks so much for the quick reply bro! I am an over thinker so I just like being certain, but I will purchase the Desktop License just in case. Thanks again
@@juanfernino Yeah that's fine we all need to ask questions! all g man!
Okay now I have this big question. I use MS Windows 10 and my OS provided me with some pre-installed fonts. Do I need license to use them in my commercial works? I mean I paid for my computer and the fonts come within it; I didn't steal them...
I wouldn't most of the default fonts are not that good for design.
@@JeremyMuradesign You mean license is needed?
Well, then I'm gonna just stick with free-for-commercial-use fonts. There are plenty good ones.
@@eren7056 fontsquirrel is a good one man!
Can I use fonts on logos that are going to portfolios? (Since eventually this will make me earn money, so I'm not sure)
Yes you can that is fine. Just use paid or free fonts don't torrent fonts.
can i use personal licensed typefaces on small graphic design projects (such as publication materials for fandom events)? or do i have to use one with a commercial license?
If it's personal fan work then it should be fine vince

Commercial or extended license man thats what you want.
There is plenty of free fonts out there they should find another one. Also they should check they are not getting scammed or something.
@@JeremyMuradesign Don't know if was was a paid font turn into free. But it's to the day available on another website for free and 0 mention of the licensing. We verify it's not a scam 🤷♀️ very tricky situation.
@@ashleybrenda___ Sometimes people steal fonts and try to sell them hmm it's weird. I would say just delete the font and move on an find other fonts on sites like font squirrel, envato elements also has fonts. Design cuts sells font bundles, font fabric etc.
Is it legal If I make imaginary project/mock up projects with licensed fonts (not intending to sell the design with the font) as a display on my portfolio ?
Free fonts for commercial use are fine yes it's legal.
@@JeremyMuradesign Oh typos sorry. I mean if I used fonts that are not free but it said that I can use them for personal use, can I still use them for my mock up projects (web design, packaging design) that I just imagined (is it considered personal use since I have no actual client for that proj? YES

I have a question that's been bothering me. What abt ppl that market themselves like influencers (big or small), freelance designers, freelance photographers, etc or just ppl in general that use certain type of fonts, graphics, icon, stock photo, etc that are free for personal? Bcs it's kinda confusing to me (honestly I do this too that's why I wanna know) since they can gather profits off of it. They gain engagement bcs ppl like their page, and stunned by the look of it.
It's free you can do whatever you want bro. The typographers choice to make it paid or not. They don't make profits off the actual font the peropl using it it's just a tool for their business it wouldn't be practical. @@officialdino6738 awesome man good questions to ask
Would I be able to use the Windows or Mac OS default fonts for projects like comic books (lettering) or novels? If I were to self-publish some someday in the future?
I looked thru the Microsoft website for the fonts and the info was bit confusing and contradictory. It was something along the lines of “You can use the font with the application it came from” or something… But there was also a link to license the fonts for commercial use with some ridiculous monthly subscription fee…
Like, can I just use Arial (or Helvetica, for example) to letter my comics or print my book with, without getting sued or not? 😂😅 I’ve been looking around, but I don’t get it…
EDIT: I just discovered Google fonts. They claim to be free for commercial use. I guess I could go with those…
Use google fonts way better and that is the best bet rather than the defaults. And yep youcan use for commercial use.
Hi Jeremy but we can use the pre installed fonts from MacOs for commercial use? Like Avenir etc. Optima? Thankss
Hi Jeremy! I have a question about purchasing a licensed font and using it for more than one client/project. Am I supposed to repurchase the licensed font each time I use it for a new project? Thanks!
No you don't you can reuse the same font over and over for design projects. But your client would have to pay for a license if they want to use it.
@@JeremyMuradesign What if I want to reuse the font on different projects, my new clients will need to repurchase the font?
@@lyanahajsaleh1360 You can use the font on different projects because you have the license for you that is fine. Every new client will have to purchase their own license if they are using it on their machine / computer if you have to hand over the editable files. Can I use a demo free for personal use version for my UA-cam videos and monetize it later? Or maybe purchase the full version after my channel gets monetized? (I am a youtuber from Asia and I my bank won't allow international payment). Would the designer take down my video?

Hi Jeremy! Thanks for the video. I'm just curious, what if I got two weights from a 'try it for free' version from the foundry, there's total 16 weights but they offer 4 for free. YES
@@JeremyMuradesign what if I started getting donations or tips? Can I still use the font?

There are many sites which provides premium fonts for free. But the question is what if I get a font from that site, use it on a project and also share that font file with the client, how does it will effect me? What problems I & the client will face in future?
Many fonts are stealing the fonts mate be careful which sites you are using. Most font licenses don't have the right to re-sell. I recommend using free fonts and sharing that with the client is fine. If it's a commercial font get the client to pay for the license if not just use free fonts to be safe. Technically if you use the font for a paid project you could get sued some countries don't care as much as others.
this helped so much for my zine thank u
You're so welcome!
Notice none of these sites have any answers how to contact the font owners in order to commercially use their fonts. *Shrugs!*
Some font shops are a one-man show which probably would be easier I'm sure there is an email just go to the contact page or find their email on the bottom of the page possibly.
