This helped so much, going to be starting my freelance journey once I’m done w school in a few months and definitely need all the help possible so I love these type of videos, thank you Megan 💕
Megan, you should invite a copyright/trademark (IP) attorney to appear in one of your videos. S/He can answer both your and your subscribers’ questions.
This is so helpful! So when you buy the font do you buy it under the clients info so they hold the license at the end or do you just buy desktop and then buy 2 seats so when you transfer it they can use it for graphics and fonts. I’m doing brand design so I’m going to have to hand over the fonts I buy so I’m a little confused 😖
Speaking in general, logos that are distinctive and identify a product or service are eligible for a federally registered trademark. And those registered trademark logos that contain a sufficient amount of creative expression, like a drawing, rather than a word mark, can be registered with the US Copyright Office. The owner of a (federally registered trademark) logo that qualifies for a (registered) copyright claim could issue copyright DMCA “Take-Down Notices” against on-line infringers who are exploiting the owner’s logo in unlicensed products/services vs. having to file a trademark lawsuit to get those products removed.
✨✨✨This is such a great video! I have a quick question when you create a contract and you want your client to sign it digitally, is a digital signature legally binding and how do they sign it digitally? I don’t live in America. ✨✨✨
Hi Megan , thank you for the information , just wanted to know more about font infringement would you make a video about it , and are google fonts for commercial use ?
Thanks for this! One more question: when you use a font where you have to buy a license, do you tell your client during the design process “this font will cost you extra”, or do you include it in the package price?
Can I trademark commerical fonts that I purchase and use for my logo and products? If not then what font software that you suggest I use or purchase to make my own logo that would allow me to trademark my finished products. Thankyou!
Hi Megan! If I plan to sell website templates with a purchased font would I need to purchase the webfront or desktop? And then would I also advise the client who is purchasing to also then purchase the licence for the font themselves?
Hi Jordyn! You would need to buy the desktop license and I include that in my clients proposals. I typically try and use Google fonts or free fonts in templates so I don’t run into any issues!! Each font has different agreements so I would make sure to read that before sending all purchasers of your template the font file. I’d probably keep it safe and tell them they have to buy the font if they want to use the specific one you did. Hope that helps!
Can you explain why graphic designers want to keep part of the logo for themselves? I don’t really understand why they don’t just hand everything over.
@@kyshauncarter8490It's still their intellectual property. It's their work and up to them to choose what they want to give up control on. As she said designers may want to use the logo they designed on UA-cam, or other websites or classes to use a portfolio to show the type of work they are capable of doing.
I'm sure this wasn't a big money maker video for you, but it was the only good starting place for this topic so THANKS!!!!

Thanks for this! One more question: when you use a font where you have to buy a license, do you tell your client during the design process “this font will cost you extra”, or do you include it in the package price?
I include this in package price! I say “custom font or purchased font” on the proposal so they know!

could you not have proofread your script and done a few takes? hearing you stutter and seeing you play with your hair is distracting.
