Having been an inactive graphic designer for years, I didn't think I would badly need this to find my way back into the industry. LOVE THISSSSS. Keep doing it!
''Because rest is also part of productivity'' - Just loved it❣. It's a gentle reminder for everyone to take a step back and realize that professional life serves personal life and not the other way around.
I also started as a freelance graphic designer with no experience or even schooling. It was rough, learning as I move forward was my only hope at that time and 6 years after I was juggling with multiple clients that it affected my mental health that leads to anxiety and burn out. Then I just learned that money is just a bonus and not the actual prize if you play the long game, what was far more important that I've missed on my journey was the sustainability, value, overall well-being and with potential to scale up for a goal (like a studio or agency).
I thought I’d have to sift through countless videos to chart my path in graphic design. Instead, your video delivered exactly what I needed in just 20 minutes-straight to the point and brilliantly done. Thank you, sir!
man you deserve a subscription! I've worked in an agency as a clerk processor but my work focuses more on Video editing, designing brochures and print media. I did design a logo once for the agency but then it doesn't feel like the real deal. I never really felt like I was on the design line of work, but I do have passion for designing way before working. Now, I do not know how to make a portfolio, where to start or what to showcase in. It feels like my work for over 4 years was mediocre and now I found your video and motivated in starting over. Thanks man!
As a beginner graphic designer, this really helped me get my passion again and as you've said throughout this journey we shouldn't forget about our mental health ❤THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS
I've been creating so many graphics for at least 5 years, at first I'm glad I'm making some money from it but as the time goes by then I'm starting to fell that burnout, Impostor syndrome and sometimes takes a long break. But this year I'm starting to realize I've to do it once again seriously because I'm already feel the pressure (I'm already graduated from the school and being unemployed for 1 years) so yeah thank you so much for showing me the way to starting all over again
Hi micheal, fellow artist and graphic designer here. i like your videos. Can you do a video recommendation of what websites you used to build your portfolio if you have the time? Preferable the easy ones to use?
thank you a lot for this video :) i want to quit my current job to start a design career and this video motivated me again to stop procrastinating. pursuing a new career can be scary and i was happy to hear that you are self-taught. i want to teach it myself as well instead of going to university but like 90% of the jobs ask for a degree... but freelancing sounds better to be anyway.
This is a really inspiring roadmap for aspiring graphic designers. It's great to hear how you emphasizes the importance of fundamentals, practice, and building a strong portfolio.
i appreciate this video! thank you so much!! i took up bfa information design but ended up in a finance 9-5 job but now im trying to transition ü thank u so much! 15:48
hey, i started watching your videos this year and i was super motivated. Now i m working as a graphic designer in a marketing agency. Are you into ui/ux design too?
I love this content. New subscriber here. What would you recommend when making a portfolio? Does it need to be in behance or dribble or should it be a personal website? which one would be more effective/appealing?
Very surprised to learn that you had no formal training. I been watching your videos for a while now. Keep it up! Could you recommend any specific courses that you took during learning phase of your journey?
Hi! I'm a Multimedia Arts student and I find my interest lies more on graphic design, your videos and many others here on UA-cam has helped me so much on my learning journey. I've been enjoying it so far! My plan is to build my portfolio through project works so I can earn whilst building my portfolio. Though the question that has been bothering me is that, how will I know if I'm ready for a Graphic Design Job? I've made a few mock works here and there but nothing of actual projects yet. What should I do?
hey man this is amazing! i've been wanting to learn a little more about graphic design and this has really inspired me! on a side note, do you (or anyone else) know some free software to practice making designs? thanks!
I understand completely why you advise people to start with the basics, and many other people who make similar videos say the same thing. However, no one explains HOW you practice the basics without the tools (let's say Ps and Ai for example). How do you learn about typography if you do not use typography? How do you learn about hierarchy if you do not practice hierarchy. And how do you practice them? By doing designs. How do you do designs? With a software. What do you think and advise about this? Thanks so much for your video :)
@@ivanaandersson Thanks for the feedback and I understand where you are coming from. I think that’s why I specifically said at 3:04 that you learn these things as you go. I guess my point is you can spend about 3-6 hrs watching videos about the fundamentals just so you know what areas to improve on then go straight to learning the tools. By that, I don’t mean to say that you should learn the fundamentals for months/years. I guess what I should have emphasized more is that there will be overlaps in these steps and not hard stops (like you can continue learning the fundamentals while you learn the tools). I hope this clears things up. Thank you so much for this.
Realistically as a freelance designer, how many hours do you spend a day in work? Do you find yourself working / studying outside of work hours as well?
THANKS YOU SO MUCH , JUSTED STARTED LEARNING DESIGN AND A FRIEND OF MINE HAS TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NO FUTURE IN DESIGN CUS AI IS GONNA REMPLACE THE DESIGNERS , AND I TOLD HIM WELL ARTIFICEL INTELIGENCE WILL ALWAYS BE ARTIFICIEL
hi ,love your video and i do have one question .i used to work as a 3d artist for gaming industry for over 6+ years and iam trying to switch my profession to graphic design ,so do i need to add this exp into my new resume or just show myself completely fresher ? thanks in advance
im currently freakin out cause i lost my job and cant find a job anywhere....life sucks for me right now i hate everything I'm thinking MAYYYYBE i can learn graphic design and land a job somewhere cause i need money and don't know how i am going to pay my bills.
All this is great advice but starting as a freelancer now is really hard bro I started in 23 and the internet is filled with ai I only got few jobs most of the jobs are taken by ai users because they can generate many designs in really short amout of time, I would really like to say to everyone who is learning rignt now LEARN AI not for scamming people but for inspiration and do you work faster because the market is chaging fast you shouldn't stay behind.
Thanks for this video! I'm wondering how I'm supposed to learn Photoshop/Illustrator without the programs tho, since I don't have the money to afford it rn
Is it too late? Knowing that there are a lot of ppl wanting to be graphic designers? The saturated market + the rise of ai tools that can instantly create a conceptualized art? Correct me if im wrong but the pay for designers might be lowered a little bit since non-designers can now create their own? Also, for big companies and sme that will not happen since they care anout their reputation and brand. They wont do it alone by using ai tools but will still rely on designers to make it unique. As a filipino and on behalf of asian ppl benefiting to the offshore opportunities and freelancing, are we affected big time??
So in the current pace of developments, AI will definitely replace some tasks done by designers. I think even before the rise of AI, the graphic designers who excel in the field are those who are not just masters of the tool, but those who has a lot of high-value critical and creative thinking. So our goal is to be a graphic designer of that level.
Do we need to go deeep in fundamentals? Wouldn't it be so overwhelming? Please suggest i wanna learn should i practice alone with learning fundamentals or theory?. Your New Subscriber 👍🏼
Love this bro. Keep doing it!
Oh wow! I didn’t expect that you’d see this. You’re amazing, Will!

You'll never "feel" ready, get actual projects and learn/improve as you go. You'll learn more when you do real client interactions
