Wow I'm way less stressed about font licensing now! Thank you so much for this and for creating cool affordable fonts with simple terms of use. I appreciate you!!
Thanks for the explanations. Let's say I want to buy a font for a marketing campaign for a client. So I understand rules will vary. But how do I (or the client) show proof that I bought a license? On a website, I guess it could go on the terms page or something. On a UA-cam video it could go on the description. For some media I see how it can be done, but their are cases where I don't understand how it works (Posters ? Business cards ? Merch ? and so on...)
99 percent of the time you will not have to prove you bought the license. usually the foundry will have a record that you bought it and can see on their end. For you always keep a file of proof of purchase like a receipt or a screenshot in the same folder as the font file so you always have it close.
if I am subscribed to Adobe Creative Cloud, it says that all Adobe fonts are cleared for both personal and commercial use. Does it mean I can create logos and make physical prints for my client without purchasing a license???
Any word about the usage of fonts in UA-cam videos? I ask, because I used Times New Roman in a lot of my UA-cam videos for the past few years, and it would suck to get sued for that.
different foundry have different rules most will cover UA-cam videos under a desktop license but not all. from what I can tell you are in the clear for UA-cam videos but it have seen some conflicting opinions on it. I'm not a lier and apple does not make their licensing easy to find for embedded fonts.
I Use a lot of what other foundries have in their contracts My license cover pretty much everything except SAS and server use so I just combined a bunch of different contract then added in a few specific things of my own.
you can go about that however you choose as a foundry. I do not charge any extra for logo design. it is all included in the commercial license for my font. take a look at a few big foundries and see what they do and decide what makes sense for your foundry and ideology
Google free fonts. Can I use any font in a commercial product? Yes, you can use them commercially, and even include them within a product that is sold commercially. Usage and redistribution conditions are specified in the license. The most common license is the SIL Open Font License. Some fonts are under the Apache license or Ubuntu Font License. You can redistribute open source fonts according to those conditions.
it depends on the end use if you ever plan on getting it on TV then a broadcasting license, but those can be very expensive so I would only upgrade to that if you end up needing it. besides that I think a desktop or social media license would cover you in most cases.

thanks, I do what I can. being a designer myself it helps to understand the pain points of most designers.

Great advice. Do you have a resource with a licensing template or do you ‘paraphrase’ existing licenses offered by other foundries?

hi, how about customer want trademarking logo with our font? do you have a clue?

Great video that I absolutely needed to watch. Thank you for making this, extremely helpful!
glad to hear it.

you know your stuff
What if I outlined the fonts.
same rules apply. Outlining a font does not change its use or effect which license you should buy.
What kind of license would i need for an indie short film going to festivals (if lucky hahaha)

Great video!
thanks. I was really unsure on this one cuz it is kinda hard to explain without any hard and fast rules so that is good to hear
You're welcome, don't worry everything was understandable and clear. keep it up!@@ExtraCreditDesignClub

I hear you. I wish there was an easier way to simplify font licensing. ill work on gettin staring to it in future videos
