A tip for when you have a vertical (upright) piano and don't want to go to the work necessary to reduce action noise: instead of opening the top to make it louder, leave it closed and either move it away from the wall or remove the bottom panel (or both)! These methods both expose the soundboard without letting out all the sound from the action.

The in-house piano for Trident Studios in the UK was renowned for the quirkiness of it's action's sound. It was a C.Bechstein that was over one hundred years old already in 1970. Some famous songs recorded on it were, Your Song and many others by Elton John, Hey Jude, Martha My Dear and other White Album era songs by The Beatles, Killer Queen and of course, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, in which the piano's Bb (4) and D (5) keys are slightly out of tune, Life On Mars, Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things and all of Hunky Dory by David Bowie, Perfect Day by Lou Reed and Without You by Harry Nilsson. Unfortunately it was damaged during the studios closure when it fell from a crane that was being used to lift it out of the building :(
