    How do you describe the opposite sound (obscure? flat?) ? and what is the cure?

      Flat is a good word. Some same warm, mushy, dead. There re hardeners you can apply to hammers but you can also use a hammer iron to heat the felt causing it to shrink and tighten up. This will make the piano brighter.

      A tiny bit because we are making the hammer a bit lighter by removing felt but unless you are wanting a concert regulation, it wont change that much..
