Cousin Vinny is THE ONLY original van of all of the original Van Life channels. All of the others that I have been watching over the years, have turned over at least 3 different vehicles to date. Vinny has great staying power and I'm glad he's still going strong for you! 👍🏽😀
Hoods are usually a good pannel to learn on, but you picked a hard one. Yea, it's a simple contour, but generally you want to spray with the direction of the body of the car, not across/up and down it, and that hood is short and wide, giving you a lot of opportunities to see things like tiger stripes. A few things that will make things go better next time (not that you didn't do REALLY well for a first try): - Navel Jelly is good stuff (any phosphoric acid prep works well). Rinse it off and get rid of the residue and go. You sanded off the rust protection it gave you. - Etching primer also has phosphoric acid in it... so you did that 2x ;-) - Etching primer is DTM (direct to metal) after you have it done you should have switched to a primer/surfacer/filler. Something that sprays down thicker and sands better. The Rustoleum stuff you used is good stuff. - sand with a longer/stiffer block than that sponge. If you used a filler primer and a long board you may have been able to sand out a lot of the hail damage. - Most Rustoleum spray cans will spray well in most positions, holding the can more parallel with the surface would have given you more even coverage faster and prevented the bump on the hood.
I was pretty happy at the end not to have tiger stripes. Thanks for all the great tis - hopefully others will read your comment have have more insight on how to do this.
Very nice job. As long as you're not dealing with clear coat paint, what you did will come out fine with some patience and luck. I was cringing until you finally decided to remove the hood. No matter what your lying brain wants to tell you, no paint job will ever look as good unless you can lay out the parts and get them as flat as possible. Eddie will be looking all swag pulling into the campgrounds and RV parks this year!
Thanks! yes - I'm very glad now that it was windy and finally convinced me to remove the hood. It would not have turned out nearly as well. For my first ever DIY - I'm pretty pleased! all the best
@@WanderDano It looks like you've got some painting talent to me. How were you able to get such a close color match? Was it a standard Dodge color that Rustoleum had in stock? If so, you were lucky, since some van conversion companies get the van delivered in primer and then apply custom paint colors. I think that trubo spray can made all the difference too, The spray pattern looked pretty close to a factory air gun. I have a spot that needs painting on the Trek, so I'll have to give it a try.
@@sarjim4381 Well - I admit while painting I thought I was doing better than when watching and editing the video. lol I ended up with a lot of paint on the tarp and my shoes! :-) The rustoleum turbo only comes in black and white.. the white was relatively close to the factory white. 2years how’s it looking today? Did you really have to strip the hood to the bare metal? Should’ve cleared it since you did so much work & it looks great! 👌🏾💎😎
It's actually at 3 years now and holding up better than I thought possible. I still haven't clear coated and there are NO issues, again better than I expected. Went to bare metal because when I watch a couple videos of people trying to cut in with old paint it looked bad so I had to sand anyway so why not do the prep work right. I will be doing a video next month and show how it still looks.
I'm an auto painter. The naval jelly actually did you a favor. Without it the rust would have returned quickly. It would have started out with small bumps under the paint and progressing to blisters. Resulting in a failure of the finish. Good job looks good for your first attempt. 👍 also etch prime is for to protect the bare metal and help the paint stick. Next time get some primer surfacer it builds up better and is easier to sand.
Thanks for the tips!! :-) Glad I used the jelly and I've heard that if I would have wiped it down quicker I wouldn't have had the sanding issue. So a second different primer? I'll keep that in mind if I have to do this type of work again. all the best

For not knowing what you were doing, you did a pretty good job. You had the right idea on prep. Your base will reflect in the paint, so if it's crap your paint will be too. If I could give you a tip for the future, I would recommend practicing can/gun control. You don't want to "swing" the pain, try to maintain the same distance and angle when moving side to side. This will ensure your paint thickness is more uniform, if you "swing" it, the ends will tend to be thinner and could be easily sanded through. Remember, EVERYONE starts from the same level. You just have to practice and refine your technique. Get you some plywood or something else to practice your painting technique. Keep at it.👍
Thanks very much! The main thing I have to admit editing and watching the video made me realize I wasn't doing as well as I thought I was doing in the moment. I think from doing it once and also watching myself I would probably do better if I do it again. :-) Thanks for the positive feedback.
Sir you did a damn good job!!!! Very very good job. I have a hood to do myself and thanks to you confidence has tripled! The video length was perfect if you ask me. I love the detail and your honesty. Now just order some SprayMax 2k clear!! Question is would you do it again if you had to?
That was my hope with this video - showing others that have also never done it, that it is do-able. Most don't want to do long videos so they just say well now sand it. lol I have the finishing video uploaded but I decided not to clear coat.. well for now. I'd do it again. PS. This was funny video to edit because I knew I wanted to start and stop painting off the hood but at the time I didn't realize just how much ended up on the tarp. lol
Looks whole lot better than what was there and for 20 to 30 dollar compared to 500. Don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know a few flaws is well worth it.
Honest video. I’m sure you like the hood without all the rust spots. The people that know what they are doing make it look easy. All new cars are painted by robots. They can’t use robots to do the final finish sand (color blend). The human touch has to be there. Great Job!!!

You did good. Honestly, I was waiting for you to pick the hood up and throw it through the wall 😆
I'd be lying if it didn't cross my mind or that I needed a couple times of serenity now moments. lol
You did well. I would have been crying and stomping my feet. Well done. Hope this lasts forever.
Thanks!! The naval jelly part had me a bit frustrated! lol
I love that you kept your mistakes in here. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! I always think it is not helpful when people make it seem like everything always goes perfectly. lol
Looks beautiful. Heck just clean up the headlights and that front end would look brand New. Great job.
Did the headlights after this
Great job!!!
Thanks very much!
“This isn’t as fun as I thought it would be”🤣🤣 don’t worry, a twelve pack of your favorite brew makes EVERYTHING more fun!
You ain't lying!! lol I think most everyone else edits out the issues so they can seem awesome! lmao
Looks good
Thank you!
Congrats, a lot of work but it looks great !!
Good project for those wanting to DIY on the cheap
nice a double intro video good shit bro. keep em coming
lol thanks.. I tend to do like an "opening" voice-over before my original video openings... lol 🙂
Good job
Thanks!
What an entertaining video!
Thanks. lol
Excellent.......... "Rattlecan Dano"
lol Thanks!
Good job 👏
Thank you very much!
Pretty impressive.
thanks!
PS. This was funny video to edit because I knew I wanted to start and stop painting off the hood but at the time I didn't realize just how much ended up on the tarp. lol
Great job pop
thanks
Bug deflector would help from road chips. Looks good, a lot better than it did!.
Yeah - I do need to find one for this van.
Good job.
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks great.
Thanks - I think it does a really good job.. well when using on an older vehicle you are trying to make look better but not perfect.
Yaah good job.
Thank you
Looks whole lot better than what was there and for 20 to 30 dollar compared to 500. Don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know a few flaws is well worth it.
I agree totally - I was very skeptical going in and really the flaws were minor and I'm still really pleased. :-)
Outstanding 👍 👍
Thanks a lot 😊
Honest video. I’m sure you like the hood without all the rust spots. The people that know what they are doing make it look easy. All new cars are painted by robots. They can’t use robots to do the final finish sand (color blend). The human touch has to be there. Great Job!!!
Thanks - I try to keep it real - so many people edit out mistakes and struggles which I think keeping those in is helpful to beginners. :-)
You did AWESOME! Great job!
thanks very much!
Wow! You aren't fooling around.
Now for a couple of those flashy led headlights and taillights!
You might look into a dent puller kit off Amazon.
Thanks!! You may like an upcoming video :-)
Big improvement.
thanks!
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
Good Job! It looks 1,000 times better. Why buy a new one when you can maintain the old one hey?
Exactly :-)
Great job.
Thank you! Cheers!
