They are racist and jealous that he is Japanese and getting paid the most.

All it would take is one wire to clear with Ohtani's name on it for the bookie to be okay with extending more credit. Unfortunately a lot of people, including those in the media, believe in shooting first and asking questions later. Many people also believe in guilty until proven innocent. Very sad that they can’t simply wait until all the facts come out.

To prove innocent is much harder than proving guilty. Easiest way to prove Shohei’s innocence is proving guilty of Ippei.
That’s because proving a negative is impossible. Even if Mizuhara is proven guilty of everything and acting alone, people will still accuse Ohtani of wrongdoing and say “he hasn’t provided any evidence that he didn’t gamble. What else is he hiding?”
Burden of proof ALWAYS rests with the accuser, never the accused.

He told what happened to him, how he learned and when he learned the story. He answered that he never bet on sports, and he had nothing to do with Ippeis debts and gambling, has not paid for that.
Regarding how and why Ippei stole money from Shohei, media should ask Ippei.
He needed to pay up. The money was there. He had access to the account. Ohtani probably wouldn’t notice $4.5M that’s if he ever look at the bank statements.
I can imagine that it's difficult for some Americans who do not know Ohtani's history and upbringing in Japan, including how he was even at the Angels to believe fully what Ohtani explained is believable and truth. But as a Japanese who have followed him in Japan and as he moved to MLB, I can attest that what he said is 100% believable.
Ohtani since he was a young boy was very focused with specific goals set and worked diligently on the path to achieving them. His parents and especially his mother was instrumental in providing the support he needed so that he can focus 100% on his tasks (the baseball). This is why if you are a baseball fan in Japan, and this is a very well known story in Japan, everyone knows that Ohtani's mother took 100% control of his money (income and expenses) and the set up was simple for Ohtani in that she gave him monthly allowance of very little money. Ohtani used team dormitory and team meals 100% to focus on baseball. This is how he lived in Japan as a NPB player era. Ohtani is known to be frugal and does not spend money like normal pro athletes do. He is not interested in fashion, clothing, shoes, cars, basically not interested in tangible material stuff. Again, this is very well known in Japan about him.
Ippei Mizuhara was smart in that he put himself in the position with Ohtani to take care of all of his personal duties out side of baseball so that Ohtani can just focus on baseball as he did in Japan. The identical set up that he had with his mother. Ippei was a perfect man for it and Ohtani trusted him 100%. So in this context, it is very plausible and most likely the case that Ippei had this role (similar to the role Ohtani's mother had in Japan) for Ohtani since he became MLB player. Ippei is not just a translator for Ohtani. Ippei was essentially Ohtani's personal caretaker, personal assistant, consultant, butler, driver, shopper who took care of all Ohtani's needs to live in USA. He therefore had access to Ohtani's bank accounts and was probably helping him on setting up the payables, bills for his expenses etc etc. Don't forget, Ohtani has no experience managing his own money in the past, he is also oblivious to all the living expenses especially in the USA. Ippei was the perfect friend and paid worker for him to do these tasks. In this set up, Ippei can easily transfer Ohtani's money, even 4.5 million without Ohtani knowing (again, Ohtani has been very naive, trusting and indifferent about money matters, except that he knows that he has been getting 50 to 75 million per year on endorsement and baseball contracts even in the past years, so 4.5 million may not be so significant in this light and could not be noticeable if he was trusting Ippei to manage). Agent is there to deal with the baseball contracts and he is not Japanese so he would not have known his personal contents. This is why Ippei is said to have been paid upwards of $400,000 per year to work for Ohtani, where as a regular personal translator working 9 to 5 is paid $150,000ish for a pro-athlete.
So you guys take a rest on speculating and jumping to conclusion about Ohtani in this situation. Eventually the investigation will shed a better light on what I am talking about.
Ippei was an employee of the Angels and Dodgers, not of Ohtani.

@@MikeBA10 yes, that’s how Ohtani had him set up in the contract, it doesn’t matter if Ippei was paid by Ohtani or by the teams, his tasks and involvement in Ohtani’s life in the USA remain the same, including setting him up with bank accounts (Ohtani would not know how neither speak English good enough to do this for example, and Ippei translated everything for Ohtani) etc
It's important for this person Shohei Ohtani to never learn another language outside of Nihongo. Allow it to be lost in translation. The English language is the most incriminating language of the world. My opinions.
This is not Ohtani's gambling scandal, neither ABC's. But it is ABC's corrupt and unethical act to put a title like that for someone who has been nice to people around him and others and been significant to the game, and who has been so far a seemingly victim in this scandal. What a shame!
How many high profile celebrities have has someone close to them or a family member steal? This is not new. Sting $9 mil, Elton John $29 mil and Billy Joel $90 mil. These are some of the few. Ippei is and always has been a liar. Anyone who has dealt with a narcissist or someone with addiction, you know firsthand the lengths that person will go to get what they want. It does not matter who they screw over. Best friend, family member or business associate, they simply do not care.

Here's me making around 100 million a year salary and endorsements, trained all my life for this, pour sweat blood and tears into being the best, sacrificed everything for this, give two shits about money and have my mom handled my money and gives me an allowance, and.....I wanna make bets for peanuts and risked everything I worked all my life for..... His life goal chart he wrote back in high school is famous among us in Japan, not only for his baseball goals but also for his aspirations as a human being, which he continues to pursue even when becoming a super star in America now. For Japanese people who have seen Shohei since he was in high school, it's understandable that he's not even interested in money. He is really such a person. Don't say "Ohtani's gambling scandal" please.
A couple of notable baseball betting scandals were first the White Sox early on, the thing is they were payed to throw games (the player's in the early 1910s were not making any money so they accepted) and then with Pete Rose (who admited betting on baseball), the thing is he was a manager at that time and usually in the dugout, similar to Ippie gambled he's an interpeter and he's in the dugout all the time, so gambling was part of his action to the game. With Shohei people are nuts to think he were gambling, he would have everything to lose and risk his entire career. The other's mentioned had a reason, with Shohei the guy trains 365 days a year to be a great pitcher and hitter (that alone takes all of his time mentally and physically) why would he need the stress of gambling (I gambled and it is the most stressful thing ever) Shohei has no history of gambling, if he did he would not be in a hole racking up a $4 million dollar debt that he can't pay, he makes over $100million dollars in endorsements alone.

But it's EXTREMELY ODD that he somehow didn't have an accountant or money manager or financial advisor who monitors his bank accounts and somehow allowed his translator/personal assistant to have access to THAT much money. If it's all true and somehow he paid THAT little attention to his own finances than he's got to get control of his own affairs financially.
It just seems kind of inconceivable that one of the biggest athletes in the World had such poor judgement when it came to who is controlling his absurd amounts of money.
It's simple. Ippei helped Otani, whose native language is not English, open a bank account on his behalf. Maybe that's when he knew the passwords and the location of important documents.
There is a formal process of adding a co-signer with full access and also a power of attorney with full access too. A business account can be opened with authorized signers too. It isn't THAT hard to give access to a bank account people! Business partners fall out all the time. This is one of those times. Keep it real.
Ohtani has never handled his finances as he is concerned about one thing, baseball. Even when he was in Japan it was his mother handling his money and Shohei would only get an allowance while staying at the team dorm. He was already a multimillionaire at that point. Japanese baseball players are not overly concerned about their money. This might be a hard concept to digest for westerners who are all about money.

I'm commenting from Japan! It's Google Translate, so please forgive me for my immaturity. The way Ippei stole money from Ohtani's account was when he invited American outfielder Lars Nootbaar during the WBC, and Ippei took advantage of the fact that Ohtani had a time constraint before the season to back up meetings with Nootbaar, food and drink expenses, etc., and that Ohtani believed in Ippei! It can be considered.
Sports and Gambling go together like peanut butter & jelly, more money more problems.

Christine Brennan did a great job summarizing the past week's developments. Indeed there are many, many questions that need to be answered. Starting with the inconsistencies between the initial admissions by both Mizuhara and Ohtani that Shohei wired $Millions to a California bookie in order to cover Mizuhara's gambling debts, vs. the next day retraction from Ohtani's legal reps who stated Ohtani had no knowledge of Ippei's "theft" of funds from Shohei's bank account (by wiring funds out). That is unbelievable on its face! Absolutely unbelievable. Simple reason: You can't wire $ of that magnitude without call- backs and verifications of your identity from the bank. Shohei must have known $ millions were being wired out of his bank account. It seems impossible to claim ignorance when $ millions are involved.
Moreover, Mizuhara may be blackmailing Ohtani. If Mizuhara was acting as a front man for Shohei and he sings like a canary, that will implicate Ohtani in illegal gambling (and maybe gambling on baseball). So Mizuhara might be holding all of the cards here in spite of the Dodgers, media, and Ohtani's lawyers painting him as the villain. Not so fast! All of this must be thoroughly investigated by credible detectives.
Ohtani and Mizuhara were inseparable cohorts. It is very possible they were in kahoots - and still could be.

Shame on ABC for the misleading caption for sensationalism and on Brennan for baselessly casting doubt on Ohtani’s statement for your brief moment in the spotlight. Shame on you for needlessly tainting an innocent player and the beauty and greatness of the game of professional baseball, although everything out there points toward innocence.
I feel that some people want to hear the story of him being guilty and keep making extra noises. Before making many judgements, I hope people get more information about what kind of person he has been since his debut (That personality part was well known in Japan.)
Just go and check "10 things Shohei Ohtani can't live without. GQ sports" in youtube for instance, you'll get to have some idea of his personality. He is devoting his whole life in pursuing baseball. Most of his interest is baseball, nothing else. And he is really a simple man, much simpler than you think. Watching him for like 10 years since his debut in Japan, I personally think he is the last person I can think of for possibly doing any sort of gambling. And he is not dumb enough to send money to gamblers either.

Well of course Ohtani is innocent. There's 700 million reasons why he is. Not to mention he is the face of MLB to this generation. Thinking logically, I recall that time In my life when my long time best friend who had this MAJOR gambling issue with illegal bookies (I was completely unaware mind you) stole millions from me I had no clue either that I was missing millions and we continued to best buds. I'd be smiling and joking in the dugout during a spring training game with the my best pal who stole millions from me, threatened to end my baseball career too a day after the story broke. This doesn't pass the smell test at all.

Ohtani has spoke up for what happened to him from his side of story. When he learned and how he learned Ippei's lies, this pretty much can be checked out from several different sources. How Ippei could access to Ohtani and how he lied and stole money from Ohtani, shouldn't this question be directed to Ippei, why medias are asking Ohtani to answer somethings "the suspect" did???

Ippei handled everything for him. Ohtani’s job was to focus on baseball. Ippei copied what Ohtani’s mother did in Japan. He was a trusted friend. Ohtani didn’t look over his bank statements.
