    I want MLB and EVERYBODY here to remember the name of the Japanese coach Kuriyama. He is the guy suggested the high school boy Ohtani to challenge the 2 ways while even he thought he had to choose one. That’s confidence forged into steel from all the naysayers who said he couldn’t succeed as a hitting pitcher from little league thru high school into JBL and majors. my previous favorite baseball moment (up until this at bat) was Ichiro vs Lim Chang-yong in the 2009 WBC final. The intensity from that at bat was unrivaled until today. On one side it was Ichiro representing Japan, enough said. On the other side was Lim, the best closer Korea had at the time. Both country have a strong sense of national pride, not to mention they are age-old rivals especially when it comes to baseball. (On a side note, Korea provoked Japan in the previous round by planting a flag on the mount after winning on the Japanese home soil, but Japan still got through the round) Top of the 10th inning, with each country's pride on the line, Lim Chang-yong was giving it all and Ichiro was taking it in like a quiet samurai that he is. Lim was dishing consecutive heaters with movement, but Ichiro stood his ground, foul tipping Lim 3 times facing a 2-2 count, and finally sending the ball to centre field giving Japan the lead and Japan closed it out in the final inning. Another anecdote here is Lim was actually given the sign to either walk Ichiro, or pitch around the zone. However he ignored it and proceeded to take on Ichiro.
      This just shows how important a 1st-tier international competition (like FIFA world cup) is for the sport. I didn't think that moment could be topped at the time, who knew we'd be blessed with Ohtani just so soon after? What a time to be alive as a baseball fan, which the WBC has re-ignited me to be.

      He literally threw that pitch over and over against the Astros/Red Sox last year in multiple games. His sweeper and backdoor sliders are his bread and butter. He was known for his splitter in the beginning but he hasn't used it as much. He can hit 100s with his fastball but they aren't good because not enough spin and thus dip. In other word, his slider is his best pitch so making this pitch isn't that difficult for him. What's difficult was to set it up with those fastballs so Trout would bite.

    Shohei is the greatest athletic talent Ive seen since Bo Jackson. He's the only professional athlete that I can compare him with. Bo was a superstar in baseball and football. Shohei is a superstar as a pitcher and batter. I hope he stays healthy because this is really special.

    • @bmac4
      @bmac4 Рік тому +4

      @Mike Jennsenn Clearly you didn't watch either of his sports during Bo's peak.
      Bo was an All Star in 1989 and a pro bowler in 1990. That's genuinely insane to even be competing for in your career, to be a top level player in two sports, and everyone who watched either sport in 1989 and 1990 knew how special peak Bo was. There's a reason why the only peer he had was Deion Sanders, a hall of fame NFL player and a serviceable centerfielder.
      His superstardom was just incredibly short lived in large part due to injuries. An injury in the playoffs of the 1990 NFL season basically cut short his football career and severe problems with his hip needing an outright replacement after said football playoff injury basically kept him from being able to play like peak Bo in the MLB, which contributed to a sharp decline an early retirement. But people don't talk about the "fizzled out" years when they talk about the greats, else we'd be calling Ken Griffey Jr overrated.
      On top of that, superstardom isnt just by being good, it's by being incredibly high profile and famous. Bo was absolutely one of the most famous athletes in the late 80s. Dude was in all sorts of commercials, appeared in television shows, kids who watched sports at the time idolized Bo. *That's* what made him a superstar.

    • @javier_rivera_torres
      @javier_rivera_torres Рік тому +10

      @@bmac4 well said... it was Bo ability to play 2 sports at an elite level that made him a superstar that even the players where fans and marveled at what he was able to do. I remember Bo and had never seen anything like it until now with Ohtani. That you can do 2 things that others dedicate their entire careers playing just one.
      I dont understand why people look for reasons to downplay something so rare and the crazy part is that they try to compare 2 different elite players that might be slightly better at one thing to someone who can do both.
      To me he is the new version of Bo even though Shohei is doing it in the same sport but 2 completely different positions. I just hope he stays healthy because we saw what happened to Bo. Sometimes being so gifted can be a curse.
      He literally has Jordan level talent for the sport of baseball. Where Jordan was not only the best offensive player in his prime he was also the best defensive player. He was ready to come in from the bullpen to close the game after playing offense the whole game and to come in to finish the game the way he did in the biggest stage possible against one of the best players of all time. The heart, fearlessness and leardeship he showed combined with his talent was jordanesque.
      He is just so special and great for the sport of baseball. There is nothing you can tell me to change my views of what Ohtani is doing. I have been watching sports for almost 40 years and have seen some great athletes in pro sports. He is without a doubt an extremely rare breed. Lets appreciate and enjoy it while it last!
      I'm an American who has also proudly served as an airborne ranger and I can care less he is Japanese because I love the sport that we created. He can and will inspire little kids not only in America but all over the world.
