The 377's design is that the front coached have 2+2 and the middle 2 have 3+2 and the first class on the 377 has plug sockets but due to the refurbishment this will be useless now
[If too lazy to go to wikipedia] The class 377/5 for services over the WLL to mikton keynes (before the 387s) 387/1 only panto cuz C2C (London to southend) only has OHLE and no interchanging with 3rd rail operators As GN/GX are in 1 blob with eachother and TL plus Southern as the GTR/Govia group
I feel like the 387’s main issue is the routes they are put on. Sure I hate ironing board seats but they will suffice on a commuter route but gwr put them on Bristol and Cardiff which is not at all an appropriate route for them. The kings Lynn services with great northern are also pushing how far they should be operating. So really some of the issues with the 387s are more of a problem because they are operating intercity services when they are designed for commuter services
I live on the West Anglia Mainline. I considered the 379s great, because they were made in this millennium and aren't the 40 year old crap far too prevalent on the railways today. But when the 720s arrived, I don't really miss them. Except for the nostalgia, that will always be true
Well I don't live on the WAML and whilst I like plenty of modern trains (Class 390, Stadler WINK, GTW, FLIRT 3 and LINT 41 spring to mind) I don't like the 379s much. Except first class. That's rad.
The 720s don't have that same characterful zing to them as the e-stars imo,. Essepcially with the boring traction sounds that Aventras have. They are pretty quick though, although class 379s weren't that far behind in acceleration at all despite being heavier.
I don't get why the 375/6s are dual-voltage when Southeastern doesn't run their trains under the wires (apart from the 395s, of course). As for the Electrostars as a whole, since I've never ridden on one, their appearance is really the only thing I can comment on. For instance, I think the 357 looks quite dated, the 376 is just ugly and the rest are fine (though I don't like the small headlights on early 375s and 377s). Whilst I respect your opinion on the 387s, I prefer them over the others. But I will say that, just going off the Gatwick units in TSW3, those seats look really uncomfortable. Poorly suited for airport service if you ask me. After seeing the umbrella fail clip (at Welwyn North, I'm guessing), it reminded me of a similar experience I had in October 2021. I was filming two DFB locomotives bringing a log train into Napier, but it was the worst rain I had ever experienced and the umbrella's demise was caught on camera.
My guess for the pantographs was testing for the AC wires on platforms 3, 4, 5 and 6 at Ashford Int. Other than that, I'm just as lost for you. Also I'll watch your opinion change the second you ride from London - Cardiff on a 387.
Btw news from may 15 2024 The class 357 is gonna have an exterior refurbishment with a new livery similar to the c2c class 720 It's unsertan if Ilford will refurbishment the interiors too The repair is gonna be fixing of corrosion in carriage ends and with water based paints Tbh I'm kinda exited about seeing the first refurbished class 357 This will take 2 years
I think greateranglia should do what london overground did; relivery the 379s to modern greateranglia colours and have them run alongside these newer trains. Maybe even put some on the great eastern.
The first 387s running to Cardiff was in December 2021 and I wasn't fully aware of regular services beyond Bristol Parkway until after the video was completed. Also Swindon is highlighted on the map.
Your video was informative and funny! RAILFANNING from across the pond in New York. I can’t believe people pay those rail companies and the carriages don’t have AC! That’s unheard of here usually the train is removed from service. UK has a lot of issues still with the rail networks.
Personally I think the class 357 and 379 deserve a video to themselves because they have pretty interesting backgrounds The class 357: went through trial and error just to get to service by 2000 Won awards for being the most reliable Electrostar in the late 2000s Was the fist train (i think) to get regenerative braking Wasn't the metaphorical hot potato with train company's yet Was the first Electrostar and the only one to wear the Turbostar front The class 379: Been replaced and forced into the great northern and Thameslink Been the hot potato that the train companies Greater Anglia, national express and Stansted express Being the first Electrostars to be battery power
1:27 I'd have also circled Wales as some GWR London-Cardiff runs are run by 387s. Yes that's right, the Electrostars have invaded the glorious land of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch...
Ah yes, the beauty which is the land of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Such beautiful sights including, and not limited to, rust buckets that accelerate slower than me and 175s that don’t blow up MOST of the time.
@@nowapproachingyt Ahh, only been on them as 319s during the good ol' days of First Capital Connect and the first few years of GTR Thameslink (before they got replaced by 700s to become your lovely bi mode 769s). The 319s were honestly great trains - now that I think about it, they shouldn't have added a diesel engine and were just better off staying as EMUs. Apparently your 769s were so bad that TfW already withdrew them after just 2-3 years of service!
Tbh £33 For a 1st class single on a train sounds great except for Heathrow Xpress and London commuter trains shouldn't have 1st class (in my opinion). Great vid as allways.
If I had to get from Paddington to Heathrow Airport, I'd take Elizabeth Line as its faster than tube and not much much more expensive unless I was in a HUGE situation of time then I'd take xpress, but not 1st class.
I do love electrostars, rather heavy units in my opinion (esspecially 387s) but like them none the less. I do prefer the newer ones though In regards to dual voltage For those who don't know... Class 375/6 =Dual V Class 377/2 ,5 and /7=Dual V Class 387s all Dual V (I think) Not sure about 378s subclass DV. In regards to networkers , they reach 60mph in around 58 Seconds to 62 seconds (met cams only) some electrostars are around 60 seconds (newer class 377/6 probably because of some newer traction equipment) still rain around 2nd and 3rd in DC acceleration behind 707s and 8 car 700s on DC and possibly behind the 378s also.
@@eaglehousewasteservices1709 yes, and for some reason they become chunky like the desiros when they have DV. Typically electrostars (4 cars) are 160+tons, big Bois, but the added equipment must weigh a frick-ton extra because it makes the electros chunky!!!. The only 160+ DV electrostar I've seen is the 377 /2s . Typically DV e-stars weigh 170 tons or more. Class 375/6s are arohnd 170+tons, not sure why. Maybe building techniques used to make the carriages were blockier? Or maybe added equipment we don't know about. Who knows tbf. With 377 /6 and 7 ,5 cars, the weight jumps from 204 tons to 212 tons with DV Class 387s are just all heavy (174 tons) for no apparent reason (there's probably a good reason but I don't know)
Power to weight ratios are dependent on formation, three car units have 2 out of 3 motor coaches, four cars 3 out of 4, and five cars 4 out of 5. They also de-rate in multiple, so a twelve car formation only has just over double the power of a four. Presumably this is to manage the current drawn from the conductor rail
Outside of your opinion on the ride quality for some variants of the Electrostars. Which Electrostar do you think has the best livery? My opinion is the Heathrow Express looks really good, and the FCC livery hasn't looked bad on anything yet.
In my opinion the 376s are the worst cause the seats are uncomfortable and no AC and toilet. But no where as near the hardness of the 377/6 and 7s and the 387s. Also I think my fav seating arrangement is the 300 series of the 377. 4 seats on each side with a little table. Feels really spacious as well.
I get people's discrepancy with 3+2 seating, but it's absolutely ridiculous that ANY British trains use it. As far back as Pre-Grouping, trains sat people four across, and that was before there were even corridors to move between cars
387s are the electrostars ive used the most and i really like them out on gwr compared to what that line used to be being crammed onto a 2 or 3 car dmu from didcot to london the 387s have helped the gwml out a lot with capacity and an upgrade the seats for me are alright as i get buses a lot the seats for me aren’t that bad and you get a decent amount of leg room
I agree in terms of capacity. Having 8 and 12 car trains in the Thames Valley is fantastic, especially compared to the 165s/166s. The issue I have is, again, the horrendous seating on those units. Also the less I say about no electrification north of Didcot Parkway, the better.
My electrostar review: Class 377: You like Southern and hate the class 455, or you might just LOVE East croydon,Brighton or London bridge Class 377/5:You ended your southern era and moved on to SOUTHEASTERN Class 379: You hate peps or maybe you are a GA fanboy Class 375: You love southeastern and you think the headlights are not scary Class 376:YOU DONT EXIST class 378: you are a Overground user Class 387: You like fast routes on GWR and Gatwick Express

It's a shame that these trains have horrible seating because I really do like them on the exterior but if only GTR were bothered to put some descent seats and an actual first class they would of been much better
It's not hated It's more of an average one And it's at the beginning And tbh it's better than the majority of the Electrostars and some of the Aventura trains

465s are just superior
You also have the 375s so there are convenient times when the class 375 comes In instead of the class 376

Only main issue is buttons falling off the doors originally from the inside and leaving the nubs behind to press them. I have noticed that they motors do cut out when decceleration around 5 to 7mph before completing braking..dont they generally engage mild tread braking in general. As you hear the brakes squeak each time they brake .
I was wandering when this episode will be made
Well wonder no more and much like the rest of the people wishing for this video to be made, your wish has come with some...unforeseen consequences.
Come back in April to see what I mean... ;)
@@MaverickHunterDaniel I can already tell that there's goona be either 1. An April fool's episode or 2. It's goona be another one hopefully this one isn't sent to the scrap god
@@lrjtherailwayguy All in due time...
Well that was painful to make. Decided to add chapters also for this, just to help um...hmmm, I dunno. But it's at least one feature UA-cam added that isn't total rubbish.
Anyway, you know the drill: An RT3185 form, some sandals and a fresh Cockle picked from Morecambe shall be awarded to whomever guesses the exterior stations filmed at. Have fun, there's LOTS to spot this time!
What soundtrack did you use?
Refresh and check the description.
The 377's design is that the front coached have 2+2 and the middle 2 have 3+2 and the first class on the 377 has plug sockets but due to the refurbishment this will be useless now
@@MaverickHunterDaniel ok
I would try but can't be bothered
[If too lazy to go to wikipedia]
The class 377/5 for services over the WLL to mikton keynes (before the 387s)
387/1 only panto cuz C2C (London to southend) only has OHLE and no interchanging with 3rd rail operators
As GN/GX are in 1 blob with eachother and TL plus Southern as the GTR/Govia group
The fact that he didn’t talk about how the class 378 runs through East London
1:18 Also a handful of clips were filmed on the East London Line (both interior and exterior) and Hackney was even directly mentioned as a joke.
No mention of gautrain :(
Oh crap. I was so fixated on these ones I didn't even remember the Gautrain existing.
Maverick is love, Maverick is life
I feel like the 387’s main issue is the routes they are put on.
Using these trains to Bristol and Cardiff is honestly disgusting.
@@MaverickHunterDaniel couldn’t agree more. While the IETs are also crap, the electrostars are not intercity trains and should not be operated there
Every time my 377 is swapped for a 387 my back wants to kill me but I'm pretty lucky that my 377 only have 2+2
I live on the West Anglia Mainline.
Btw news from may 15 2024
The class 357 is gonna have an exterior refurbishment with a new livery similar to the c2c class 720
It's unsertan if Ilford will refurbishment the interiors too
The repair is gonna be fixing of corrosion in carriage ends and with water based paints
Tbh I'm kinda exited about seeing the first refurbished class 357
This will take 2 years
I think greateranglia should do what london overground did; relivery the 379s to modern greateranglia colours and have them run alongside these newer trains. Maybe even put some on the great eastern.
1:23 you forgot how the now serve Swindon Bristol and Cardiff
The first 387s running to Cardiff was in December 2021 and I wasn't fully aware of regular services beyond Bristol Parkway until after the video was completed. Also Swindon is highlighted on the map.
Class 377/3 has 2+2 seating and more comfy seating than the other class 377s
10:45 dont forget the bakerloo line trains
Yes well done, those trains have a similar seating layout too.
Your video was informative and funny! RAILFANNING from across the pond in New York. I can’t believe people pay those rail companies and the carriages don’t have AC!
That’s unheard of here usually the train is removed from service. UK has a lot of issues still with the rail networks.
At least in the UK we have several train protection safety systems. Whereas in the US PTC is only just becoming a thing.
I don't even notice the Ironing board seats on 387s but thats only Because of their woeful Ride Quality never been bounced around so much
Personally
I think the class 357 and 379 deserve a video to themselves because they have pretty interesting backgrounds
The class 357:
went through trial and error just to get to service by 2000
Won awards for being the most reliable Electrostar in the late 2000s
Was the fist train (i think) to get regenerative braking
Wasn't the metaphorical hot potato with train company's yet
Was the first Electrostar and the only one to wear the Turbostar front
The class 379:
Been replaced and forced into the great northern and Thameslink
Been the hot potato that the train companies Greater Anglia, national express and Stansted express
Being the first Electrostars to be battery power
HES BACK,YESSSS
1:27 I'd have also circled Wales as some GWR London-Cardiff runs are run by 387s. Yes that's right, the Electrostars have invaded the glorious land of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch...
Ah yes, the beauty which is the land of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Such beautiful sights including, and not limited to, rust buckets that accelerate slower than me and 175s that don’t blow up MOST of the time.
@@nowapproachingyt wonder if those rust buckets by any chance are the 153s? Those trains are painfully slow at accelerating lol
@@gabrielstravels nope. The 769
@@nowapproachingyt Ahh, only been on them as 319s during the good ol' days of First Capital Connect and the first few years of GTR Thameslink (before they got replaced by 700s to become your lovely bi mode 769s). The 319s were honestly great trains - now that I think about it, they shouldn't have added a diesel engine and were just better off staying as EMUs. Apparently your 769s were so bad that TfW already withdrew them after just 2-3 years of service!
@@gabrielstravels that sounds about right. Cmon northern, follow in TfW’s footsteps
2:51 yay my local station
Tbh £33 For a 1st class single on a train sounds great except for Heathrow Xpress and London commuter trains shouldn't have 1st class (in my opinion). Great vid as allways.
Only if the service you get on board is good. Which it isn't on these trains.
If I had to get from Paddington to Heathrow Airport, I'd take Elizabeth Line as its faster than tube and not much much more expensive unless I was in a HUGE situation of time then I'd take xpress, but not 1st class.
definitely not more expensive than a standard class return from london to southampton (with a railcard of course)
I do love electrostars, rather heavy units in my opinion (esspecially 387s) but like them none the less. I do prefer the newer ones though
In regards to dual voltage For those who don't know...
Class 375/6 =Dual V
Class 377/2 ,5 and /7=Dual V
Class 387s all Dual V (I think)
Not sure about 378s subclass DV.
You are Correct 387s 377/2 377/5 377/7 and 375/6s are all Dual Voltage
As well as the 378/2s
With 377 /6 and 7 ,5 cars, the weight jumps from 204 tons to 212 tons with DV
Class 387s are just all heavy (174 tons) for no apparent reason (there's probably a good reason but I don't know)
Power to weight ratios are dependent on formation, three car units have 2 out of 3 motor coaches, four cars 3 out of 4, and five cars 4 out of 5. They also de-rate in multiple, so a twelve car formation only has just over double the power of a four. Presumably this is to manage the current drawn from the conductor rail
@philipstanbridge6535 yeah i know. 3 cars are slower than 4 cars for sime odd reason.
Outside of your opinion on the ride quality for some variants of the Electrostars. Which Electrostar do you think has the best livery?
My opinion is the Heathrow Express looks really good, and the FCC livery hasn't looked bad on anything yet.
FCC is probably my one, but I do like how simple Southern's livery is. Of course, green isn't a creative colour, so points off for that.
@@ujiarchive Yes.
10:12 me too bud
Went on an ex gatwick express the seats are awful
This may sound stupid but can you do a review on the s stock
I have no idea how many times I will have to say that I don't take requests.
@@MaverickHunterDaniel Can you then not make a video on the s stock ;).
with covering the FLIRTs you may as well so one video because they're all the same, it's just one is long and a bit faster
Assuming you're just talking about the UK FLIRTs, because if not, you couldn't be farther from the truth.
