Philip Anselmo was the sound track to my teenage years. One of my all time favorite vocalists. That raw emotion, that so dominated my early depression days. A lot of anger around my illness and wasting of my body, and this band and his vocals helped me deal with this. A lot of good stuff from them covering a lot of mental and emotional issues.

When I was 12 Amanda, my Mom was trying to help me find what music I liked. I tried hip-hop, RnB, Rock, but none of it did anything for me. It wasn't until I heard Metallica Cranked through my Sisters Stereo, until I finally felt something, it gave me tons of positive energy, and it just clicked with me in every way that matters. So, on Christmas back in 1996, my Sister bought me my first Metallica Album, and my parents bought me a small KOSS CD Stereo System, and 25 years later, they're still my favorite band. Heavy Metal in general writes about subject matter that no other form of music will, because it won't sell them albums. Metal has always been a Strong, Honest, Powerful, Loner form of music, I have a saying that goes, STRONG AS ONE, OR WEAK WITH MANY, which just means always be yourself, always be a true individual, never go with the crowd. My Pops listened to Oldies as well, and my Mom still loves 80's one hit wonders station's. PANTERA was basically the band that created "Groove Metal", which is basically Thrash Metal, only played slower. I used to love PANTERA, but at some point, I just lost interest in them, basically it happened when I discovered the band "ALL THAT REMAINS". I loved Phil Anselmo as a Vocalist for PANTERA, but when heard Phil Labonte from ALL THAT REMAINS, I was kicked in, because his voice was on a whole nother level of Powerful. Stevie Ray Vaughan, is my biggest influence as a Guitarist/Musician, and I'll always recommend just checking him out, because nobody could play guitar like him. Passion, Honesty, Strength, Compassion, Power, Feel, Soul, and Weight are the characteristics that I'm personally attracted to in music. Take Care Amanda! Keep Being A Bright Ray Of Beautiful And Positive Sunshine. Toodles!

This album (Vulgar Display of Power) was very important to me back in high school. I had a close friend get involved in a fatal car crash that he sadly did not walk away from. The last song on the album, Hollow, was extremely cathartic for me at the time. All the sadness, the heartbreak, the anger I felt was right there in the music and lyrics. I can't thank Pantera enough for helping me, if not heal, at least deal with the loss of my friend. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this track.

  • @beastmode8985
    @beastmode8985 2 роки тому +9

To me this song was always about accepting the fact that you are in an abusive or unhealthy relationship and having the strength to walk away from it. In the beginning the lyrics say something like "in my mind, all I wanted was the keeping of someone like you." He didn't say he loved her. He loved the idea of "having" someone LIKE her. She was a possession, a trinket. He loved the image, maybe something akin to a "trophy wife". However as the song goes on he references all the different abusive aspects and in the chorus he tells her to keep this so called "love", and moves on.
Pantera is a band that definitely deserves a deeper dive, and they have many songs that address mental issues.
I'd suggest you check out Cemetery Gates next. It is about accepting the loss of a loved one and finally gathering the strength to get back up, pull yourself out of the grief and depression, and rejoin the world of the living.
Hollow is another great one addressing the loss of his best friend which, to this day, still chokes me up everytime I hear it.
There are many many more. Definitely a rabbit hole worth singing your teeth into.

I do remember using this song for an English speech I had to do while we studied Shakespeare. I shockingly got an A, and I will never forget it. 😂 I love this song so much. Thanks for being open about your experiences. It's great for people to see that others have been where they've been and made it through.
I struggled with my own depression for the better part of a decade, multiple suicide attempts, a fear of healing/comfort in the depression... The catharsis of heavy music was one of the things I relied on often when my mood started spiraling.
Pantera never shied away from the themes of anger, darkness, powerlessness, depression and suicide I was going through. So much of what they performed feels like a release or venting of those things.
Their songs suicide note pt1 and pt2 perfectly express the lowest lows I ever experienced, the declines into my attempts. I'd strongly recommend listening to them in order. Just a heads up though, I don't think anyone should listen to them if they can't handle being exposed to that sort of theme/mindset.
I'm just rambling and tired. Hope this made some sense to someone. Thanks for the content

Great reaction Amanda. Keep fighting the good fight. Vulgar Display was the first Pantera album I heard and I was hooked instantly. It was already mentioned countless times and I have mentioned it in your other reaction videos but Cemetery Gates is a must reaction.
It's a very personal song for me and many others. Keep doing what you do. I still love the pink cat ear headphones.

That solo is soo emotional the guitar seems to cry ! A simplistic beauty in the musicianship! Dime could pull emotions out of a guitar like very few no matter what genre of music!

So many of your thoughts and words resonate with me. It's been 8 years since and i realize i still have to remember. For my daughters. For my ex wife. To forget is to relive and i refuse to go back there. Everything is good now but all it takes is to let ones self to slip back. Always talk, always listen and accept. Never deny. It's not always easy but it's what is right and healthy.

I love how you can feel the emotions come through in a certain songs. You have a very open mind and not very many people have that. Alot of people don't open themselves up to hear and pain and sadness in songs and I thank you for that. Thank you for having a beautiful soul and caring heart. Much Love.

This is a really interesting reaction because it show a lot of what I consider to be the core focus of the song, but also a lot of what seems to be your personal history and how it affects your hearing of the song. And, it's all good and it's all valid. For what it's worth - I think the guitarist has a way of elevating himself beyond his environment and the song, and he manages to write some of the most beautiful melodies in his solos that transcend the long hair and the goatee and the heavy metal .... and he just delivers.

I just stumbled onto your channel. I was scrolling to see if you had reacted, but in college back when I had hit a rough patch and thought it was all caving in Peter Gabriel’s - Don’t Give Up was my go to, if you haven’t heard it before. Still makes me get a lump and tear up when I hear it.

This is the best video that you did because you didn't break it up every 2 seconds to talk about it you actually let the song play and then you gave your reaction after it again I think you're beautiful love you videos love you reactions and you're not a burden on anybody like I said in the last video when you were talking about that just wanted to let you know this was the best video that you've done because you finally shut up till the end of the video

My first concert was Pantera and type o negative back in 95. Great show! Dime is my hero! BTW, you are absolutely gorgeous! Just saying. I've had to deal with a lot of mental health issues and some were caused by physical problems. Like my wife of 22 years leaving me for another man while I was in the hospital having my leg amputated. For thr first time in my life I was completely alone and by myself learning to adapt to life with one leg. Music, especially metal, has gotten me thru so much shit. From that and my mom's passing to having to learn how to adjust to single life with one leg and not being able to work anymore. Keep things going, you're appreciated! A song that did get me thru some tough times was a song by Pantera called suicide note part 1

First time here and I feel impressed (to a degree) with your references to childhood trauma in current relationships as well as manipulation in relationships! In particular, manipulation for familiarity. I’ve been working on healing all of this (childhood trauma and even realizing as an ex-codependent, how I manipulated) for a few years. Hard work, but worth it!
