    Awesome video! That really looks like a million bucks with the good one. Me I’m still in the touchier light leaning on furniture and muted with a bed sheet stage, but I now have a great understanding of what to save for. Thanks!

    This is good info, but a bit confusing in its delivery. You seem to be mixing the term "softbox" and "light" together as if they both refer to the same thing. Of course, they do not. There are lights, and light modifiers. Lights are lights and softboxes are light modifiers. It's not a fair comparison to put the fluorescent light with inaccurate color tint against the other light and say it has anything to do with the modifier. That's one LIGHT vs another LIGHT. The modifier has almost nothing to do with the color comparison. They are just totally different things with different metrics to judge. To those that are new to lighting, I think this video does more to confuse than to educate. I do think you understand the subject. But I think the title, at least, should be modified.

    • @kirkdarling4120
      @kirkdarling4120 8 місяців тому +1

      Agreed. It's easy enough to find cheap copies of expensive softboxes, put each on the same light, and have a true comparison of "cheap" versus "expensive" in modifiers.

    If you want to be objective , remove the grid from the other softbox and then show us the results.I have the so called cheap softbox but with 4 bulbs and it comes with 2 switches that allow me to turn on 2 or 4 bulbs simultaneously.If i want just the light of 1 bulb i unscrew the rest.So far I have not noticed tint problems.You are right about the stands, they are shit, I use different ones more sturdy.

  • @3DThrills

    My cheap setup has an 80w LED bulb set at 8000K
    I've got 1/8th strength orange gel sheets that I will use to adjust to the desired warmth.
    Mine has tabs inside the softbox where I'll be able to rig a secondary diffuser, negating any concerns about it being too bright, while eliminating harshness.
    The stands they came with are beefier than the $17 stand I just bought for a different light, but these are studio lights, they will not move very far.
    20" x27", I got a pair of them using the Amazon 'Used' option for $54! This is crazy.

    Hey, thanks for the vid. I have a very small space to shoot. As there is no space (and I use a green screen to allow for a more interesting background), I need a more space saving lighting solution, like a flat LED panel. Do you have a recommendation for such a light that isn't harsh and has some diffusion. Thanks.

    • @creatorlife8142
      @creatorlife8142  2 роки тому

      No problem! These led panels look amazing value, they offer quite a lot of diffusion and don’t take up too much space! Hopefully this is the kind of thing you are looking for!

    Light applications made with umbrella ribbing will not last very long. When Apollo came out with the first soft boxes, they had that type of construction and they did not last long under daily usages. Switching to fiberglass ribs was a great new design for lighting applications. Construting some, is a whole other conversation.

  • @corgikun2579

    I think the cheap one looked alright, and changing the aperture and white balance is probably something you can do under a minute so I see no point in spending too much

    • @mrwashur1991
      @mrwashur1991 Рік тому +1

      You can definitely get a modifier of the same quality as the expensive one and a decent light for much cheaper. Glow ez makes great modifiers (they’re owned by adorama). They compare to westcott and aperture for much cheaper (and they have the quick setup/snap in setup)

    • @vonpotatostein
      @vonpotatostein 11 місяців тому +1

      In the case of the cheap one the problem is the green tint it has you can counter it in post by shifting to magenta but that also affects any other light in the scene (shifting it to magenta too) and if you start to mask the scene so just the subject is color corrected then you have thrown any of the savings you got with the softbox (being that you will be spending time in post to solve color shifts issues)
      You don't have to spend much to get a decent softbox that won't shift the color to green or magenta, the advice is to not go with the absolute cheapest stuff, there's is a reason why it is heavily discounted compared to other options..

    Can you comment on how noisy the fan gets on the Neewer SL 60? Also, what mic are you using in the video (I see you have a decent windshield). Is it a dynamic mic like the SB7, or a Cad E100S Supercardioid Condenser Microphone? I would think both might ignore the fan sound better than other choices. Couldn't find the Neewer Sl 60 but I purchased a Neewer EX-60 (half off for 4th of July sale). In a youtube video test it was about 4 decimals louder than the Goddox. Thanks in advance for your thoughts

    Comparing light quality by price is just going to confuse most people. The attributes of the light are based on physics and the dimensions and features of the modifier. Joel Grimes does a good job of explaining what he calls “cracking the code of lighting” in his videos by explaining soft vs hard by modifier size and distance. On the other hand there are companies like LumeCube that try to convince customers that they have somehow gotten around the laws of physics with modern electronics (LED lights and USB rechargable batteries). To put it very simply, photographers really should have a basic understanding of the physics of light…
