I’m in a photography class and my instructor asked how I know so much… I told her I watch Manny on UA-cam lol. Thanks for the content. I learn more off UA-cam than in class
Sitting here with a 48" softbox thinking I just struck gold. Little more drama than the 59", but a little more airy/soft compared to the 36". Cheers for the great video!
If you move the 36in Softbox in would that make the light softer with a little more wrap around to the background and use a 85mm lens on both and get the same results?
The large softbox is softer due to the system, which should be obvious. Both fulfil different functions. For me, the smaller softbox is a very good tool for making a portrait of a person. For shots of a whole person or a group of people, the larger one is preferable because it makes a larger and more even light stamp. If uncontrolled light diffusion is not so important, I consider a very large umbrella with a diffuser to be a very good substitute for the large softbox.
Of course you are going to get different results. If subject is 36" from background, and 36" modifier is 36" inches in front of subject is would be the same as subject 59 inches from background and modifier 59 inches in front of subject. Anytime one of the variables is changed, the results will change i.e. contrast, shadows, harsh versus soft light. Inverse square law.
You are now one of my favorite youtubers! Started appreciating flashes lately and your videos gave made it easier for me to understand and compare equipments. Thank you!
Keep doing what your doing Manny. Short concise and brief with a lot of helpful information per topic. For me I prefer it that way. When I search for creative contents in UA-cam, I always shy away when I see the duration would be 10 mins. or more. People now a days have a dozen things to do. More power!
so, my battle these days when I'm doing portraits is either using a HUGE soft box, or using the same size umbrella, with diffusion. because it compacts down so much smaller for travel, and you get both a bounce and a diffusion as opposed to the double diffusion in most softboxes like that.
I had similar thoughts as I watched the video. Certainly was a clean result with that large Octa, but would have liked to see it compared to a large umbrella.
I watched til the end. Great video buddy! IMO, it's not so much short videos, but rather videos that get to the point, that I appreciate most. Your videos all get to the point fast and stay fun without being corny. Keep up the good work.
I never click out of your videos Manny! You create such entertaining and worthwhile content. Those people are out there though!! I love the Zeppelin for sure!!
Haha I agree with you at the end. I'd much rather watch short videos and be like "wait that's it? I was enjoying it so much!", than "Oh I'm liking this video but it's taking up too much time". Your videos are always super clear and concise while being on the short end, love your work!!
I've been shooting hard light too. With soft light fill. My hardlight has been a bit softer on the edges. Custom Fresnel. If you love the Zepplin, try a Focusable parabolic. SMDV, Glow, Broncolor. You'll freak at the options they offer.
It makes sense the 36in has a harsher light due to its size. I like the 59 inch better! I agree, it has more of a commercial feel. Great video! Thank you for the demo! And I feel you on the short attention span, this world is getting more and more impatient and harder to entertain! BTW whats the name of that box thing youre sitting on?
its almost incomparable quality but we have to factor in how travel and set up is...i have both a 36 and a 59 as well...i use the 36 more often as its so much more portable...but if i owned a photo studio where i could leave equipment up...i'd use the 59 more often
this video was really helpful. Thanks bruh. And these 5 minute videos are perfect. It's those 16 min videos from the other dudes that are a beast to sit thru. "aint nobody got time fah dat" lol
Bigger light source fills shadows from different angles.. That's why spot modifiers are so hard... What i'm still checking out is putting the light inside the parabolic...
I would also recommend the buff plm, and pair the silver and translucent. Shoot backwards into the silver, the let the reflected light shine through the translucent. It is 84inches, so it works close or a bit further out.
Keep doing what you do, bro. I watch to the end b/c you're all in, and the content is on point. Let those who are mapping to shorter attention spans do what they do - it's all good, but understand that true knowledge comprehension takes time, and I'm good with that. Cheers!
I like the "commercial" lighting, as you call it, for the studio setting. that white background and the subject.....she just looks insanely pretty in that light. for the "drama", I think it'd have to be like an environmental portrait to make sense. like you said, there's room for both. awesome video, my man
nice tuto. Did you try godox QPR90 in case it is better than this 36" ? the zeppelin is 750usd and takes time to assemble on site. it would be perhaps easier to have a ad300pro and ad-s065w as fill light than one zeppelin. what is the dimension of this cube ? beautiful posing !
Id recommend getting a 2x3 silk on a pole and just buy umbrella's in diff sizes and color (silver, white, etc). Its like having any softbox you want basically
You’re getting more bounce from the white walls with the big one. I wonder if there would be less difference without the added light from the white walls?
Soft light you can get harder in post, that's I'ld prefer the zepelin. But, if I don't have it I just put a diffusor white blanket in between the model and the 36inch reflector. And then try to match the results.... Is it an idea ?
No man your videos are ok when it comes to time thanks for thé no bs series straight and direct info Even the videos when you get more in depth on a product or photography tutorial are just so instructive so in no way boring So thanks for your efforts and time to get that content out to us thanks for sharing you inspire many!!!
I do like the 15 min or shorter videos on UA-cam over TikTok for sure and wow that zeppelin is beautiful light fall off. Ok I don’t have that modifier for my flashpoint lights so how would that modifier compare to Westcott 7ft umbrella with diffusion attached. ?
Thank you for this comparison! Definitely, the Zeppelin is a go to for the studio but that 36" is just so versatile when on location. I don't leave home without it.
Why is there a colour cast difference? The wee box shots have a pink magenta tint vs the big bad boy. But assuming its same strobe and similar camera settings... what gives?
I love a huge soft light. I go through the hassle of using it indoors and outdoors (lots of weights) depending on the vibe. I love my smaller lights too but that commercial look gets me dog.
Thanks Manny. Love the comparison of the two different modifiers. I have learned from you, to use larger one for studio work and smaller for on location. And I do appreciate the brevity of your videos.
How about a tour of your studio? Is this a commercial location or home studio? What do you have in your studio? What would you change? What do you plan to add?
I do use a parabolic softbox with the flash mounted inverted. Since i can change the position inside it, i can either narrow or widen the spread of light - so drama and even light all in one. And even better - i like to use it without diffusion so i get that silver look.
Manny, do you have links for the backdrop stands and the white block the model is sitting on? Thanks. Excellent videos. I’ve learned a lot watching them.
I don't know what it is about your channel bro, but I really like your content. I feel like you're somebody I know teaching me this stuff. I have. 36 inch but ordered a 60 inch and waiting on it to arrive this week. So I'm super excited about that. In the future, maybe produce a few courses or videos on how to expose or grow a photography business. I'm having trouble with that atm. I'm over here on the westside (Los Angeles) and everybody here is a photographer lol. Saturated market.
Great Manny, obvious result but good to see in a straight forward Demo. You said exactly what I was thinking, more professional clean image making. Time for Diana to get busy under it. Keep up the good work..
Great vid Manny. Really helpful. But can you help me out? Self-portraits are killing me right now. Focus is never quite right. Can I ask what trigger you were using and how you get your camera to autofocus like that? Thanks a lot.
1:37 I’m not gonna lie. I like the 36” here a little bit more because I like the gradient cast on the background better and better modeling of the face. But if you out a grid on the 59 and shot it straight without a diffuser sock I’m sure it would look stunning.
Cool video. Zeppelin for me bro. Question tho. Tell what what you used to trigger your camera? How do you record back of your camera screen? is it some software?
Pregunta...How would the 72inch white umbrella with a sock diffuser compare to the Zeppelin as far as soft light? I mean I knew it would be expensive when I saw Westcott, but $750? For a soft box? I am so not there yet! Congrats that you are though, ain't hating, just saying...
Use what you have or can afford. Using a large light source will make the light softer and what you will see is a difference in controlling light spill. An umbrella will not have as much control as an octobox. Keep an open mind and you may like it better.
this confirmed my suspicions, lol.. I love dramatic photography so I use grids and small softboxes for that.. BUT.. I get alot of clients who want family shots and for that I use the bigger softbox, no grid - for the very reason your video pointed out. the larger softbox gives softer shadows, beautiful bright light all over, that commercial hallmark card look. So I AM moving in the right direction and learning something... whewww. thank God!
White background with a large modifier works great. But if you use a dark one it’s get grey and not so pleasing. So I prefer then a smaller one. Sure it also depends how far your model is away from the background but most of us has I think just a small studio space. 😛
Manny does it matter the distance between the front edge of the modifier or should we be looking at the distance from the actual light source the actual flash itself? Please clarify. With the large modifier your flash head is about 1 to 2 ft further back than it is on the smaller one.
Him talking about short attention spans made me realize I should stop using social media as it’s all about find one post interact for a few seconds, move to the next, and rinse and repeat. What is this doing to my school performance? Making my brain not be able to tolerate moments where I need long attention spans. Could be a reason why so many of us struggle with focusing on tasks for extended periods of time. It is time to spend less time scrolling through our phones.
very nice! is that large cube something available to buy in a store online maybe as I had requests for it in photos but in UK cant find anything similar
Heyo can someone explain to me the difference between a flash and a static light? Like why not setup a static light too? Is it because flash is portable and saves a lot of battery?

You never let me down with your teaching. I’m not worried about how long your videos are. If I’m watching I’m learning. Thanks for your time.
Это очень по Русски
Here since 80k still love your content, although you’ve always taken great photos, you’ve level yourself every time!! Keep killing it bruh
Video at this length shows that there’s no fluff and to the point. People needs this
The large softbox is softer due to the system, which should be obvious.
This was helpful. I like the zeppelin for women and the smaller light for men or when I’m going for a stronger more dramatic effect.
I was thinking the same
Interesting… Going to do a few tests on my own !
just showing us a super clear comparison with both (fantastic) real pics and test shots and not wasting our time. So, so appreciated.
Of course you are going to get different results. If subject is 36" from background, and 36" modifier is 36" inches in front of subject is would be the same as subject 59 inches from background and modifier 59 inches in front of subject. just wanted to let you know, I made it till the end. I was engrossed. Short and sweet. Keep it up.

Just compare both and see it the difference in light quality is worth it for you
I watched til the end. Great video buddy! IMO, it's not so much short videos, but rather videos that get to the point, that I appreciate most. Your videos all get to the point fast and stay fun without being corny. Keep up the good work.
That soft light looks nice- but the dramatic vibes of the 36 makes my eyes happy. Dope video as usual
Where can I find the block thing she sitting on??
Man.. those 36in Octo shots in the beginning were perfection man!!
I definitely enjoy the drama of a smaller octa! But the soft light is also to die for 🥲
u j f j h h h k tu h h b 89 t 999
Exactly my thoughts!
Love ur 5 minute boomers.. best most packed photog vids out there.. u even got in an ad and commentary... LOVE IT!
I never click out of your videos Manny! You create such entertaining and worthwhile content. Those people are out there though!! I love the Zeppelin for sure!!

A longer outdoor photoshoot would be kinda cool though :) when you're just walking around giving random tips with your models, those are great!!!
I've been shooting hard light too. With soft light fill. My hardlight has been a bit softer on the edges. Custom Fresnel.
If you love the Zepplin, try a Focusable parabolic. SMDV, Glow, Broncolor. You'll freak at the options they offer.
Manny killer job bro! I’ll watch your videos over tik tok. It’s better to be more informative than skip steps. Keep the vids coming!
It makes sense the 36in has a harsher light due to its size. I like the 59 inch better! I agree, it has more of a commercial feel. Great video! Thank you for the demo!

Damn, I just bought the 36" as my first soft box too. Thank you for sharing this video.
I am considering a larger soft box for the future.
the bigger softox gives a much more "expensive" look. it looks really great

Love your videos man! I stay to the end all of the time! Good stuff! Keep up the good work, I know it gets exhausting. cheers!
Silly question. What are those blocks called to have models/clients sit on? I need some for my home studio.
Where did you get the white cube she is sitting on?
Keep doing what you do, bro. I watch to the end b/c you're all in, and the content is on point. Let those who are mapping to shorter attention spans do what they do - it's all good, but understand that true knowledge comprehension takes time, and I'm good with that. Cheers!
Informative bro, stu looks 🔥
Missing your vibe bro! God bless #vlogs

I have the Westcott Zeppelin 47. I also have some westcott asymmetric strip boxes. Really good quality of light.
You’re getting more bounce from the white walls with the big one. I wonder if there would be less difference without the added light from the white walls?
They both have their purpose. For me, I like both looks.
Started vibin hard when the beat dropped. Awesome video btw. Huge fan of those big softboxes!
Soft light you can get harder in post, that's I'ld prefer the zepelin. But, if I don't have it I just put a diffusor white blanket in between the model and the 36inch reflector. And then try to match the results.... Is it an idea ?

That zeppelin is niiiiiice!!!
Now I feel like I need to pull out my wescott 7 footer to see what it look like. Love your vids man 💪🏽
I love a huge soft light.
Loving the crisp light coming from the Zeppelin.
How about a tour of your studio? Is this a commercial location or home studio? What do you have in your studio? What would you change? What do you plan to add?
Manny your videos are always useful, thanks very much💪
So what’s the replacement for the zeppelin now that it’s discontinued 😢
I do use a parabolic softbox with the flash mounted inverted. Since i can change the position inside it, i can either narrow or widen the spread of light - so drama and even light all in one.
And even better - i like to use it without diffusion so i get that silver look.

Manny, do you have links for the backdrop stands and the white block the model is sitting on? Thanks. Excellent videos. I’ve learned a lot watching them.
Thanks for the comparison, I’m intrigued. But will the $749.90 Zeppelin deliver superior IQ than Adorama’s $109 60 inch double diffused Glow EZ Lock?
for outdoor Portraits (full Body, too) would be a 44er Softbox visibly better than a 36er? I am thinking of sell my flip 36 and buy a flip 44
I don't know what it is about your channel bro, but I really like your content. I feel like you're somebody I know teaching me this stuff. Great stuff , yup watched to the end. I clicked on the link for the rolling c stands and it didnt work 😥
I agree, the Zeppelin was amazing. And the shorter videos are my preference as well. Keep it up ☺️
Great Manny, obvious result but good to see in a straight forward Demo. You said exactly what I was thinking, more professional clean image making. Time for Diana to get busy under it.
Keep up the good work..
Really great video. I personally prefer the soft look most of the time. The harsh light works sometimes too depending on style.
Great vid Manny. Really helpful.
But can you help me out? Self-portraits are killing me right now. Focus is never quite right. Can I ask what trigger you were using and how you get your camera to autofocus like that?
Thanks a lot.
Watched all the way through (skipping the sponsorship bit!). Very useful information. Thank you!

Question tho.
Tell what what you used to trigger your camera? How do you record back of your camera screen? is it some software?
but that dramatic with the 36" can modify in post which finally can end up looking like the Zeppline. right or wrong?
why is the smaller one putting out a red color cast?? Are you using the same light source (both westcot, whatever)?
I got you bro, i will always watch these videos. Keep it up man
I have a similar softbox, I just kept it in my store since I got a smaller one. But after this video , an bringing it out... Thank you
Pregunta...How would the 72inch white umbrella with a sock diffuser compare to the Zeppelin as far as soft light? I mean I knew it would be expensive when I saw Westcott, but $750? For a soft box? I am so not there yet! Congrats that you are though, ain't hating, just saying...

If I may ask, what is the size and width of that backdrop that you have mounted there. I'm looking to get one similar to yours.
Could you compare other ways to create a large, diffuse light source? Something like a white sheet or bouncing off a white wall?
Thank you so much! I am starting to use external Flash, and this helps me choose the right one
Not to worry Manny, I always make it to the end of your videos. Thanks for the info.
I appreciate your videos! People can keep there tiktoks. I want to spend my time learning from great content like this!
White background with a large modifier works great. But if you use a dark one it’s get grey and not so pleasing. So I prefer then a smaller one. Sure it also depends how far your model is away from the background but most of us has I think just a small studio space. 😛
Hi Manby,
Love all your videos, very informative and very professionally produced, spot on,
Thank you again for making great content,
Pete 👍
Bigger source gives softer shadows and less contrast and vice versa. But I think it depends on the output the way you want the photos.Use accordingly
How did you take the self portrait? Could you please do a tutorial on how to do a personal photo shoot? Thank you
Manny does it matter the distance between the front edge of the modifier or should we be looking at the distance from the actual light source the actual flash itself? Please clarify. With the large modifier your flash head is about 1 to 2 ft further back than it is on the smaller one.

I always make it to the end Manny. Keep up the great videos.
The Zeppelin is amazing! Thank you for a great video Manny. I know it's older but I'm still learning the photography side of things.
I wish I could use a big 59 inch box like that. But I always run into situations where I just simply don't have the room for it.
You can just add a fill light to fill in the shadows on the other side and keep using the smaller soft box, especially with inflation these days.
Clean light always 😎
very nice! is that large cube something available to buy in a store online maybe as I had requests for it in photos but in UK cant find anything similar
I prefer the zepelin look honestly… the soft light is just on point
As you said short informative straight to the point videos 👌💪
Manny,
Where did you get the backdrops? I really like the colors!
Any Info is appreciated.
Thanks
Zeppelin.. looks amazing !. 36in octa is good as well.
Heyo can someone explain to me the difference between a flash and a static light? Like why not setup a static light too? Is it because flash is portable and saves a lot of battery?
Super helpful, I don’t mind longer videos. Any good zeppelin alternatives 👀
Wow! I think I may be picking up the zeppelin! Great review and photo results!
Awesome!! Great work!! Reminds of studio work I did in the past.
