This song reminds me of my husband Gareth. We played this on cassette in the car , back in the day, over & over. I lost him in 2020 to cancer at 58. Love you Gar, miss you every day love. ❤❤
I'm very sorry for your loss. May the pain of his loss subside leaving you with all of the love and beautiful memories that you made together. As long as you remember him, he's not gone. While listening to the song, I hope it's not all tears. I hope some smiles creep in as well. May your husband RIP.
Thank you, you're right he'll never be gone for me. Your words brought me comfort....
@@garethjamesdavies6850 I'm so happy to know that. I hope that each day gets a touch easier and that more of the joy you shared becomes a more prevalent part of your daily remembrance. Take care of yourself.
Οι ψυχες ειναι παντα ζωντανες οσο τις σκευτομαστε με αγαπη ..φιλια❤❤❤
So sorry for your loss.
One day. This guitar will be worth billions. I hope this day never comes.
Stefan Pruszkiewicz I agree. That guitar is already etched in music history.
Um... Sorry dude but no, it won't. I love Mark as much as the next guy but a guitar worth 1 billion dollars? No, just no. One of the most expensive guitars ever auctioned was Jimi Hendrix's from Woodstock and that sold for 2 million and then another guitar signed by Eric Clapton, Keith Richards , Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Brian May, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Tony Iommi, Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Sting, Paul McCartney, Liam Gallagher, Brian Adam's AND Mark Knopfler, among others sold for 2.7 million dollars.... Do you know who all of those people are?? All of them combined on a guitar felt just shy of 3 million dollars.... You're talking about a guitar from only one of those guys being worth 997 million dollars more.... Your comment is simply wrong. Have a good day man.
@@DiegoGonzalez-ic3si Have you taken into consideration that in 500 years this maybe true? By then, the guitars you mentioned, including Mark's national might as well be worth a billion dollars, not to even taking into account inflation. Nothing is simply wrong. Have a good day.
@@DiegoGonzalez-ic3si come on dude. "billions of dollars" is just a figure of speech. You don't have to take it too literally
Amen
I am a child of rap, I grew up in this culture but I will never thank my father enough for giving me a taste for good things. And more specifically Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler is my hero guitarist ! what a gift from heaven, what humility, what an overwhelming and breathtaking presence. We almost forget that in addition to being, for me, the greatest guitarist this earth has ever known, this man writes wonderfully well.
Thank you for all the ballads, I hope he will accompany us for as long as possible
Mark Knopfler is such a phenomenal guitarist that people rarely talk about his talent as a lyricist. His lyrics have all the signs of good literature. Dialogue, character development, progression. The list goes on -
The lyrics just kill me every time. Those plus his sound, make me burst into tears. Without fail. What a treasure Knopfler is.
@@ThingsIAppreciate Me too! I’ve shed a tear to this one more than once -
Absolutely true! Well put! ❤
His best hits wouldnt have been hits if he didnt offer great lyrics to accompany his music.
Do you almost feel like they are gifts from God, and do you think it's possible that if you didn't write it then only someone else would have?
The GOAT
One of the most beautiful guitar melodies I've ever listened to. Don't know how he no longer chokes up a little when he performs it, I always do when I listen to it. Thank you Mr. Knopfler for all the music you've created that keeps my heart alive.
In and around 1979 Mark and DS played in Cork City Hall, when it came to the playing of R&J the lights in the hall packed with over 1.000 people went out, a single light from the very back of the hall came on and hit the body of that very guitar and the silhouette of the guitar reverberated around the vast room, it was magical. The last live concert I attended pre covid was Mark Knopfler live in Dublin. The man is up there with the greatest of all time in my humble opinion.
Mark is just the coolest dude. Musically, he's extremely talented, and he's also a great story teller with a wonderful sense of humor.
Mark Knopfler is my personal guitar hero. Don't ever leave us man.
MK is retired G H . ........."No more travel for ole' Granddad" lol
One of the greatest songs ever written
He kissed his guitar. With a love like this you can't go wrong.
A true authentic rock legend. Horribly underrated by the music business. He is a pure guitar genius.
Underrated no way. The real musicians know how good he is.
Not in the slightest underrated.
“Was fooling around with it and came up with this one”... a legendary song... only MK can deliver it like that !
a lot of great songs start with artists just noodling around and something coming out of it
You'll never find a more down to Earth musician than Mark Knopfler. He's so humble in what is an amazing talen that he's curated over decades. His playing is souful and absolutely memorable. Lyrically, he's up there with Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell. A true poet.
Humility is a forgotten trait in this post modern age Ciaran. I second your summary completely 🙏
I agree entirely, and would add Paul Weller to the List. Another greatly underrated musician whose body of work has touched so many, yet shuns the celebrity and narcissism that is so in vogue.
I grew up listening to your songs. Now I'm 43 I started t learn to play the guitar several years ago and I continue listening t you. Thank you
I think everyone already heard this song and think " ah its pretty cool song ". And then you find it again couple of years later and just smile and feel " damn i had forgot about this lovely song " .
This song was released before I was born but we used to go to France to see my aunt in the summer holidays. It was an 8 hour drive and all my dad would play was Dire Straits and Queen. If you sat in the front seat he would play the drums on your leg until it went a tad numb. I remember this song so clearly and still believe a better love song has never been written.
SIR MK I love this song so much. I really enjoy to listen to your music Romeo and Juliet This Love Story I really love it SIR MK I want to thank you to bring me such off joy- en happiness in my life thank you so much. Take good care of yourself because I like to hear you for the rest of my life🙏💯💯🎸💜🎸💋🎸❤❤❤ you are the best of the best guitar player with your golden fingers😊
That song has always touched me deep inside. Thank you.
I don't know what kind of magic is at work here, but this song makes me feel like I am 17 again, and at the same time feel every day of my 51 years.
Same here brother. Same here
Me too Victor and Grumpy Dave - at 78. Go Mark, the best.
I could not agree more! The first chord takes me back...
i cannot play the guitar very well, but it is always a huge pleasure to try and play along with you, Mr Knopfler. My respect!!
He’s a living legend !!
So we’ve got to enjoy him in the now !!
We all have a Romeo or Juliet in our past that we have loved and lost, and that we still miss, that we still regret letting go. This song is the story of that Romeo or Juliet, and, depending on your mood, can bring back memories of joyful times you spent with them, or sadness and regret that those times are gone. A bitter-sweet song that tells the story of all our Romeos or Juliets, bringing back their faces, their voices, how it felt to hold them, to love them. "All I do is miss you, and the way we used to be" often brings tears to my eyes. This is the perfect song - "a love song, the way it's meant to be."
Jim Parlett , what beautiful and poignant words. A truly brilliant compliment to a great musician x
Jim Parlett I couldn’t have expressed that sentiment any better than you did.
Well said.
Total respect
Really true.I feel the same.
what a remarkably vivid and captivating storytelling
I love this song in so many ways. The transition from the airy fingerpick pattern to the big chord strokes. The modern day references and slang laid across the Shakespeare classic. The gravel-laden inflection when he delivers the most powerful line, "I love you like the stars above, love you 'til I die." The vague sense of futility as he offers the olive branch - "it was just that the time was wrong." This is a 4 minute song that seems to describe multiple decades of life at the perfect level of detail. In a brilliant body of work, this one has always been the standout for me.
Very well said
S
O beautifully described! "streets of shame, pretty strangers, and making love that makes you cry!" . May the goddesses Bless us, protect us with that breadth, depth, and capacity of emotion.
It’s always cool when musicians “let you into their lives” a bit... telling you a little about their journey. Particularly when they’re legends like MK.
They are human beings, people, just like us. 💜
He kissed his National guitar at the end of this song !! That melted my heart !! I bet music is his truest love ♥️
He's so passionate about his music, one of my favourite guitarists of all times ☺️👍
there is absolutely nothing that sounds like a National steel body......there's a reason the blues greats played 'em
That guitar is Juliet
The best version of the "Romeo And Juliet" among rest of the all version of Mark Knopfler......Thumbs up
This song my late mum loved this song and would play often on our house, I remember in the late 80’s she had tickets to see them in Sydney, and seeing Dire Straits meant so much to her.. I hope wherever you are mum you have it on repeat….
Mark is probably the most underrated guitar player of our time
I love this song. The entire Making Movies album is a gorgeous album, just perfect in every way. But, this song is the very best. It gets to me every time. Beautiful.
Making movies is one of the best albums in history, no doubt
Best. Record. Ever.
Evening with Mark best way to go about living with music of my heart
Agree dancing with music never ends....
Yeah, gorgeous. Do yanks write gorgeos already? You know, they tinkered with humour and labour, might as well screw gorgeous?
I bet his dad was proud that by buying the 50 quid guitar his son had became one of the greatest rock legends ❤⭐🎸
My own personal opinion - MK doesn't get enough respect from the masses. But us guitarists know his stature.
If I remember correctly it was a red Höfner with a whammy bar...
@@mindeloman because the masses are idiots. But we musicians will always appreciate everything MK ever done. Cheers 🍻
@@kubel83 I believe you are correct. Musicians appreciate greatness, no matter the package it may come in. An anecdote of this: I was reading an article some months back. Evidently Guns n Roses played Farm Aid back in 1990, which is pretty crazy considering the crowd and GnR was sort of the biggest band going in 1990. Interestingly, John Denver followed GnR with his set of some of his classic songs. Just him and his acoustic guitar. According to the article, the guys in GnR and a whole bunch of other acts were in the wings of the stage to watch John Denver perform because everyone was just in awe of him. Again, musicians appreciating musicianship. I went and found that performance and the story is not wrong. John Denver absolutely killed it.......and I say this as someone who will listen to Pantera and Peter, Paul, and Mary.
@@mindeloman I can only agree👍
That kiss on the guitar. heart wrenching how his soul is all in both that song and that guitar.
I honestly wish I was able to see Mark knopfler perform. Such a legend
That kiss at the end says it all 🎸
My song and guitar 🎸 man Mr Mark Knopfler
I love the way you tell this tale (sigh). There’s an adaptation for every season. ❤️💞🖤
What a genius. Thanks for all the music and all the love. We don't deserve you.
I’m glad Holly broke Mark’s heart because it birthed one of the greatest songs of the past 75 years. He gives voice to us all.
A man’s love song.
You can tell this song is about somebody that he loved greatly. He tears up everytime he sings it.
Holly beth vincent a punk girl who used him for connections and broke his heart. In an interview she summed up their relationship by saying "mark knofler? Yeah I used to have a scene with him and he couldn't handle it so..."
@@delilasloan9311 She seems like a real sweetheart.
@@SouthernSkeptic I have checked out her band Holly and the italians and I am a fan of punk music too, and I dont really care for anything she put out, but she does have a following.
She never got huge off of knopflers connections like she intended. For some reason he seemed to really be in love with her despite their age and style...opposites attract I guess. She was beautiful though in my opinion and had an interesting life. I think he was devistated when they broke up.. apparently he was touring in the u.s and right before a show she called him on the phone and dumped him.
One of the best songs ever written gets me every time this one really resonates with a lot of people.
resonates... good pun (resonator guitar)
Yes it's classic so romantic ❤
I can hear his British accent now in this live version which works cuz Shakespeare is from England lol
@@leahflower9924this song isn't about Shakespeare. The title reflects the genius of Mark Knopfler, because immediately we know it's about a doomed romance. We might still not understand anything about the words if he'd have sung about Dave & Karen.
So Juliet outgrew the relationship but Romeo won't stop stalking her. Get over it Romeo, you were never going to keep this girl long term 💔
Pure Genious, and a source to millions around the world. Thank You Mr. Knopfler!
Mark the reason I love this song so much was because I had a meeting with a girl, her name was Juliet, this was in the 80s,down south Perth Australia, now we would meet everytime at Christmas during holidays, she was a beautifull girl and I adored her so much I was in my mid 20s then, then one Christmas Juliet did not come down to the southwest for christmas that year and the following year, and I did not see her again, this song even today still reminds me of her,its a beautifull song for a beautifull girl, thanks.
This is the song of my love story ❤
Your guitar Mark reminds me of the guitar that I wanted to build. Now I will not. I want no clock in time. I look at your guitar and think nothing special about mine. Thank-you for reminding me how there is nothing special about me or any guitar build. Such an inspiration in time just to tell me and then, you're not so special after all of time.
Thank-you once again of reminding us that we are nothing special.
Brilliant
one of the love song ever
A truly amazing “ Troubodeur” … such talent . I saved this to keep
Tear in my eye as I listen to this beautiful song I remember as a young teenager
I love how he kisses the guitar in the end.
My alllll time favourite song, and story teller, and picker!!! He has truly brought soooo much joy to my life!!!
I’m with you there ! He’s fabulous x
He sings and plays the guitar with all his heart and that makes him the greatest
He is indeed the greatest guitarist of all time - absolutely no doubt
Your mucic is so beautiful inside and out x like you mark x
I love that man.
What a gifted guitar player is Mark Knofler.... Truly Fantastic...Gift to this world ....
We both grew up on different streets, both were streets of shame......
One of my favorite lyrics.
Totally agree... "We came up on different streets
But both were streets of shame
Both dirty and both mean
And still the dream was the same
I dreamed your dream for you so now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I'm just another one of your deals."
He really captured people's often unconscious attraction to an equally damaged kindred spirit and their yearning to experience deep intimacy to repair earlier wounds. The man gave himself totally to this woman then felt shattered at being seemingly dismissed as if he meant little more than a quick fix to boost her mood or was on a par with a paying customer. Profound lines.
Blyth is canny dirty like
Je älter man wird umso mehr versteht man diesen Großartigen Song 🎵
Dire Straits und Mark Knopfler. Einfach wunderschön 😭
Thank you for your music. I saw Dire Straits in Fresno California back in the early 90’s. Thank you for Telegraph Road. I remember the first time I heard the song. I was taking a walk by myself at night and I had my Walkman on. When the song was over I knew something changed in me. It was like - what did I just experience. I will always remember that moment.
mr Knopfler, may I just say, thank you so much for the all the years of music.i grew up with Dire Straits during high school,my how time flies.the music is as good today at age 65 as it was back then.may God continue to bless you as we grow older.again thank you for good clean music that is fit for all audiences.
Just superb ❤
I have always adored that song, but now watching your fingerpicking, and the economy of motion on both your hands - you, sir, are a true talent.
Yes, a player just simply needs a certain c'ritical mass" in their hands like he has to get his sound. I can only imitate or interpret with my skinny fingers and hybrid picking 😆
I m 38yrs old now. I was 17 when i first heard this song n instantly i thought yeah this is my kinda music. Since then there's hardly been a single day that i didnt listen to one of his songs.
when i was a 10 year old kid i stole a dire straits instrumental cd from my mother and this song was my number one song for years, now im 35 years old and still this song is the most beautiful song i know
Did you gave it back 🙈😅
I agree it is the most beautiful song I know
Merci Mr Knopfler je vous écoute depuis 1985 à nos jours . Quelle merveilleuse révélation
Well, folks, guitarists, musicians...
One thing's for sure: His expertise and ease on the guitar is downright supernatural! 😮😮🔥🔥🎸👑
Yes it is👍❤
Love his guitar playing and the back story of this fabulous song is awesome.
I really like this stripped back version. Although I was at the Alcemy concert Hammersmith Odeon July 2983 so I love tgat one too. 40 years ago!
Haha 1983! Fingers...
My every day song
That is my favorite song! ❤️Mark Knopfler is unique and his voice it's remarcable! 👋👋👋👋👋👋
Love the songs of Mark Knopfler since 1985 started when am still in my home town Esperanza Sultan Kudarat Philippines, heard it first from cassette tapes my mother brought for me....
I'd be super happy just listening to Mark talking music, this wonderful song is a bonus.
Knopfler absolute legend❤️🙌🏻

one of the best musicians ever and one of my all time favourite songs
The best of all time
All time favourite favourite song. I get a lump in my throat and it brings tears to my eyes every time I sing the line ‘ I love you like the stars above, I love you til I die’ 😭
Every time I listen to Romeo n Juliet by Ds/Mk, I find a new meaning of this song! So amazing it is! It's like a prayer (not merely a love song!). I wish I could preserve this song delecately into the special place of my heart! I wish I could kneel down and thank Mark for giving us this ever beautiful and delicate piece of master craft!
WoW...now I understand why m Dad n mom loved you so much...!! You're Mark Knopfler n I was searching for your voice for so long!🎊♥️✨
I love this performance as it's actually "sung". It's so beautiful.
Even though we know how brilliant Knopfler is... it still blows my mind that anyone is capable of producing something so beautiful as this song.
So beautiful song, thanks Mr. Knopfler. For Claudia, my eternal Giulietta, from your eternal Romeo. I miss you so much, I'll forever love you. Just that the time was wrong...🌷 ❤ 💔 💕 💖 ✨
❤️ love
This song so underrated!
Fantastic, what a musician
AS ever great performance!Also the best Mucicians!realy emotionces!thank you,merci la vie.Tu connais l art!
Ah, Mr Knopfler, saw one of your concerts in Madison, WI. You opened for Bob Dylan. My wife came to see Dylan. I came to watch you and your magic Guitars. Must be 10 years ago now. Thank you for a great evening, even if you didn't get a chance to play Brothers in Arms for this old Nam Vet..the concert is one of the highlights of my life.
This song is everything. God love Mark Knofler
When he talks he doesn't sound like he's from Newcastle but as soon as he starts singing you can tell he's a geordie for sure xx
Kissed the guitar. Class
Always been your fan
Thank you Mark. 🥲
I love him.. I love you mark.. Finest unique piece of musician.. Evrything just perfect.. Voice wow every man's dream.. ❤
Mark says I forget & forgive in the song. Great
Juliet….when we made love you usta cry……god that gets me…..
Bless you Mark Knopfler for the Amazing Beauty that trasends time. You quite simply are the greatest Music Man in every way that is💞
He sure is, simply the best. I am astounded at how many people don't know him by name. Like you said simply the greatest Music Man he can do it all. Peace, Michael Angelo
sempre fantastico cosa fa uscire da quella chitarra con quelle mani
He’s probably the best rock guitarist ever
This remembers me 1996.. love this song so much.. love ❣️ Mark Knopfler
Thanks mark for the magic of music you have dispelled
The amazing thing is that Mark Knopfler grew up in Newcastle Northumberland.. where my family roots come from but I grew up in Africa because my parents left in the 1950’s for the ‘new world of opportunity’. I want to go back to explore Northumberland.. Mark .. will you show me around?
