I own a DX5. While I rarely use it anymore, I probably played it more than any synth I ever owned. It has such a wonderful FM sound. Great playing in this vid. Does the synth justice.
The DX-5 is 2 DX-7s in one, so actually is _more_ capable than a DX-7. The naming of the DX line of synths uses smaller numbers to identify the better instrument, so the DX-1 was the top of the line, the DX-5 it's the same as the DX-1 minus the wooden case and enhanced sound editing facilites, then there's the classic DX-7, following there is the DX-9, which have less algorithms and operators (so more limited sonic capabilities), and at the bottom there are the DX-21, DX-100, etc...
thanks for the tutorial...i just picked up a dx5 for $450 after being inspired by your video: my dx5 was purchased new then played in church briefly and then put in a closet until now. it has an expressiveness that seems to go far beyond the garden variety dx7 due to the keyboard feel, aftertouch and sensitivity. brilliant
From my experience the keyboard is a major factor in the DX's sound. I have owned a DX7S, and still own DX7iiFD and TX802. I find sounds are better when played on the DX rather than triggered on the TX802 from a different keyboard. The way the sounds respond to being played is why people who haven't played one don't understand what the big deal is. I think the DXs are real players synths, as shown by this fantastic guy. Plus, people are obsessed with warmth these days, which isn't everything.
For a keyboard, the Yamaha SY77 or SY99 are both capable of the same level of FM (plus the AWM2 voices as a bonus) along with an extensive set of effects the DX5 never had. For pure FM (no keyboard) the Yamaha FS1R is really the king, it's more FM capable than the new Montage series. All of these alternatives are much easier to acquire than a DX5.
Thor Z. The Montage FM-X engine has definitely a retro sound flavour to it though... feels a bit like a grown up DX7/5/1. At first I hated that there was only 8 values for feedback, but I found the engine has quite fat a sound, a la DX7 MkI and I started my approach again from that perspective, like it was a developed DX7 Very interesting FM machine.
Wonderfull playing skills, great FM patches: a high quality demo, sir - that goes for the sound quality of the video too. Thank you, and keep up the good work! Smoeki, Belgium
So cool. I worked out a conversion for 4 op to 6 op fm over about a decade. It really turned out to be a worthwhile project. A great new FM sound is a formidable music tool.
Interesting. DX7 prototype was actually called DX5, which then became DX9. Anyway, the DX5 in this video seems like a Frankenstein of a synthesizer, having two conjoined DX7's. Similar concept adopted by JX-10, combining two JX-8P's. The DX5 with 32 voices of polyphony in 1985 must have been mind blowing. Beautiful machine. Saw it once on eBay without a scratch and with LCD still glowing turquoise backlight, but I think it was like $4,000 or something, so obviously out of reach. Still, not bad thought having the DX1's going for above $10K easily. It's nice to see thought that the market has appreciation for all these amazing instruments. FM is actually a very advanced form of synthesis, having ability to emulate audio energy variations producing drastic timbral changes according to velocity values. Sampling could've been more realistic on the surface, but it was hard to be expressive with sampling playback, unless you sampled with 128 levels of velocity, which was obviously prohibitive with high memory prices in the '80s, and it wouldn't even be feasible today. Nonetheless, to make long story short, I am sad that Yamaha abandoned all the cool synthesis methods such in their DX-series, VL, and even AN-series instruments. The only way of modelling Yamaha is still keeping is in VCM, which is primarily for emulating pedal effects such as flangers or phasers. Disappointing, to say the list. Although I must say that Motif XF7 is quite fine an instrument (keyboard feel not as good as earlier Motifs, but one can't have everything...). They seem to have at least perfected sample playback with digital multi-mode filtering. Times are bad now in a sense that we became jaded with all the options available today. I remember back in the late '80s having heard a U-110 module play a realistic sounding acoustic piano was such a thrill. Those days are sadly gone. Hard to get excited about anything these days, unless one goes on eBay and searches for an instrument from the past to try to recapture the magic.
The original synths always sound better than soft synth emulation or for that matter the same patch on latter synthesizer. Case in point would be the famous patch sondtrack on the Roland D-50 and the same patch on the Roland Juno D. Since I have both synths I can compare the original is much cleaner sounding and crisp.I like this guys demos since they are well done and thorough.
I prefer the DX5 more than the DX7 or any other FM synths (even the Montage...sounds too cold and digital). The DX5 sounds so analogue, alive, warm and dynamic organic. For me it`s the best DX ever made.
@Geeljasjes I agree with you. There's some sort of a DX piano on every single sample-playback synthesizer, and yet, it just doesn't capture the magic of the original DX.
@RAZZAMOND10 Depending on the DX5 version you have, it may be interchangeable with a Roland Alpha Juno or Akai MPC60 power cable. If you need me to get a Yamaha PN#, please send me a message.
Too sad you do not understand any thing. But I love the sound of the japanese speach, and his wonderfull playing skills. Zu schade, dass man nichts versteht. Best Regards from Germany.
hello, i am a very happy owner of an yamaha sy 99, just recently, my question is....is it possible to load this electricpiano sound by 4min 29, into my the sy 99, cause i heard somewhere that the sy99 can read any dx sound,...and if so, where can i find this amazing sound, please , thank you in advantage.

An amazing synth! I have the DX7 Mk1 but this DX5 has two DX7s in it. I haven't seen one, but would love to play around with a real one, one day.......... I also have a Yamaha TX802, and may be its layering function would be very similar.......
I owned one. Wish I still had it. Two DX7 synth engines, twin cartridge ports, plus an additional section that lets you save setups of patches that you've mixed or created. Not stereo, but each synth has it's own output that is mixed with a slider on the front. Interesting mixing capabilities. Arranged as Synth A, Synth B, Cart A and Cart B You can mix both synths, either synth with either cart, or both carts. You cannot mix all four. Too bad,,,it would be outstanding.
Exactly right. The DX1 has all that real wood and the very slick programming interface, but soundwise it's the same engine as the DX5. Which is to say, like two DX7s, only better, and MUCH better looking.
@@ingoodmusic dx1 has POLYPHONIC AFTERTOUCH. And i have my suspicion that the audio might be better (hand selected and hand tuned DAC section, longer sine tables etc)
I feel like this must be Mr. Katsunori's favorite, or one of them because he knows exactly how to play each synth. by the way, @6:20 it's the theme from all 80's cop action movies
@DX7Alex You forgot to ad the 48 patch performance section which allow the player to save up to 48 performance setups. The only problem is, if you're using more than the basic two cartridges, you have to remember which sound cartridges ere use with which set up.

It is two complete Mark 1 DX7s in one case. Each has independent output. You can program the same sound on both and slightly detune one for a much fatter sound, or you can program different voices on the two and layer them for combinations and depth one cannot get on a DX7. Also 76 keys vs 61. I believe the MIDI implementation on the DX7II is more advanced, however, and of course the DX5 has no disk drive. It uses the proprietary Yamaha memory cartridges of the same type as the Mark 1 DX7. No effects, of course, and no sequencer. Just pure 6-operator sine wave FM.

FM is beautiful and underrated, it has recieved such an un-deserved amount of bashing due to the cheesy 80's patches.

Yeah, in my opinion it's the ultimate DX, it's the only DX synth where the strings sound good
chief tp I think it also has balancing audio grade transformers for each operator and some electro mechanical tricks
Thank you for the demos! 😀
Very fine and clear explanation and demonstration of FM Synthesis.
That patch at 6:22 sounds like something straight out of an early-90s instructional videotape.
Wow, this thing sounds so full for a DX synth. I'm definitely looking up these sysex for FM8.

what are the technical differences between the dx5 and dx7
DX5-is the best FM synth on the planet
Um.... No. The SY-99 would bury a DX-5 or DX-1 with no problems at all.
And the new FMX engine in the Montage would crush the DX-5 turned off.
