One of Ujiie's best videos on all levels - his playing/chops, demonstration and explanation of the machine's functions and of course, his entertaining superlatives and accolades of the keyboard! I can't believe the hate that 'synthesizer snobs' are giving him. His playing/chops are killer; he sounds great on ANY board, including the Jupiter. Unbelievable how people are knocking him for showcasing sounds they don't consider 'ideal'. Jupiter Brass is a famous (and oft copied) sound for a reason...get over it, people; go back to your trance/edm/drone stuff if you don't like it. Keep on keeping on Ujiie! Most of your detractors probably couldn't name three of the chords you play in any given video!
Exactly the sounds were exactly what the show needed for music wise, as it fitted it all, despite being electronic for a time of steam engines. Though if it wasn’t it just wouldn’t be the same show. Mike ‘O’ Donnell and Junior Campbell were genius with the equipment, like using the LM1 drum machine cabasa sound tuned down for puffing. Just amazing.

Not to detract from Ujiie's excellent playing, I have to say that most of the presets he used were not what I would choose to demonstrate this instrument. It's capable of much darker, Techno-style sounds. With the Europa upgrade, you can play all oscillator shapes at once, which, needless to say, produces thick, warm tones that remind one of the Juno and SH line of Roland analog monosynths. Europa also provides some of the most advanced arpeggio functions to appear on any synth. Given that you basically get two synthesizers via the keyboard split, if you are doing arpeggiated Techno or Minimal Synth-style grooves, this thing has an entire world or sonic potential I've yet to see/hear in any video. Every video I watch showcases the painfully bright, cheesy, brass-style sounds that chase a lot of viewers/listeners away.

I used to own both but sold the JP-6 because the JP-6 sounds flatter and has less oomph. The JP-8 has a few more features such as stereo output (unison will spread out the VCOs, for example), layering, ring modulation and random arpeggiator. It doesn't have unison detune or glissando though. There are probably a few more differences. The JP-8 will never be sold.
Jupiter 6 is an upgrade of the Jupiter 8 , you get new filters, Lfo : 2 LFOs, Crossmodulation, filters: lpf 24db/ bpf 12db /hpf 24db, autotune, you can stack all the waveforms of every vco
The JP-8 uses Roland's own VCO ICs which had some issues and were not cheap to make as their engineers designed the ICs without prior knowledge of how to make one. As a cost cutting measure, the JP-6 uses the same ICs as the Prophet-5. Both have Roland's famous IR3109 VCF ICs, but they were implemented in series in the JP-8 which resulted in a normal sounding filter, switchable between 2-pole and 4-pole, with a separate HPF that's only used for EQing the bass, whereas the multimode filter design of the JP-6 forced the circuit designers to implement the ICs in a funky way (again, they didn't really know how to actually implement a multimode filter and came up with their own way), and basically the filter is now more "wild" and the resonance will give the filter a cold, grimm sound. But people like it, so much that there are eurorack versions of the filter for modular synths. Haven't seen a eurorack version of the JP-8 filter. Another problem with the JP-8 is that the enveloppes and LFOs where voltage controlled, which means they were prone to detuning. Normally that's great, it's what warms the sound, to have slightly off enveloppes and a very slightly drifting LFO, the problem is, this could get quite extreme, to the point where even with the "auto-tune" option, the LFO that was advertised to go as far as 40Hz would no longer get near that frequency, and the enveloppes would sound distinctly different if you waited long enough. That was rare but Roland recieved complaints (for a 3'000$ synth, that's understandable !) and the JP-6 now features digitally controlled enveloppes and LFOs, which add to the rigour and coldness. BUT, the LFO now goes to 100Hz, that's incredible ! Rarely seen in analog synths ! The cross-mod has a more linear behavior on the JP-6 which makes it more useful, but it goes farther that the JP-8 and it's more difficult to find really musical spots, again, adding to that dissonant dystopian quality. It can be modulated by enveloppe 1 on the JP-6 and stays stationnary on the JP-8. The arppegiator doesn't feature a random mode on the JP-6 (sad...) the Dual key mode is no longer present (that would reduce the polyphony to 3 voices !) which is really a bummer if you use the synth on stage, but with some planning and an idea of where you want to go, that's not a problem in the studio. What else... Ah ! Yes, the JP-6 doesn't have a sine wave, only LFO-2 is capable of generating one, but oscillator 1 is capable of being tuned by half-steps like oscillator 2 instead of only by octave like the JP-8. This helps with the cross-mod, as your key will change when you modulate that parameter. That's more for convenience than anything. And of course you can mix waveforms on a single VCO on the JP-6, which is the reason why there are so many cyberpunk-looking LED buttons on the front panel instead of flickable switches and knobs. So now, a sound that would have required the Dual mode of the JP-8 if you wanted a sawtooth, PWM and noise, using 3 oscillators per voice, would now be achieveable with ONE oscillator. And to finish, the JP-8 has stereo output, DCB (early MIDI but just for Roland products. Yes you can adapt DCB into MIDI), the JP-6 has very basic MIDI, but MONO OUTPUT ! NOOOOOOoooooo......
The Behringer Deepmind was modeled after This era of Roland synths. I couldn’t afford one of these, so I got a Deepmind instead. Should have gotten a 12 because the architecture is designed to exploit 12 voices, but I didn’t have the space in my setup for it. The Deepmind is a very underrated synth. Not to mention the iPad/Mac/PC app makes parch creation/loading/saving/backup as simple as I’ve ever seen on any synth.

Couldn't agree with you more, Roland could absolutely clean up if they remade a Jupiter 8 (and I mean a PROPER Jupiter 8 resissue, not that digital shite that has NO RIGHT to bear the Jupiter name), or even a SH101..Look at the success Korg are having with the MS20...Roland's marketing department must be from the Planet Zogg.
I had one of these...traded it for an Ensoniq ESQ-1 (this was before the 'techno' revolution that made analogs ultra-expensive) and boy do I regret it. :-(
I am sure Roland are working on something. Good thing don't come out fast. Korg products seem to be desperately rushed to the market these days (the brilliantly executed M1 is not likely to be matched any time soon). Roland has some great instuments, V-Drums, V-Piano, V-Accordions. The new Integra-7 module is brilliant with inclusson of all the SRX boards. Let us not be so negative, and appreciate what Roland has to offer today.
So you're saying you want to learn subtractive synthesis? There are a lot of videos on UA-cam about that, and then there's Sound On Sound Synth Secrets (Google it) if you want to go further than the usual sounds.
What's more troublesome when it comes to Roland is that they refuse to release VST versions of their products. If they would've released the D50 they would got a sh*tload of money, making the fans happy, and keeping a really good sounding synth alive. So I had to head over to Korg to get their M1 that has all their cards and sounds from scratch. Roland's big loss I might say.
With a plastic MIDI controller and software plugins one is likely to lose interest in synthesizer very fast. We live in great times, when hi-end products show up on eBay for ridiculuosly low prices. Let's enjoy and appreciate that while this lasts.
its just an effect of the scan rate of the ccd in the camera, all the old synths and even some of the newer ones do this (watch his andromeda a6 vid for example)

niezwykły, do dziś słychać w nim.. Vangelisa,:))
Eryk Maler speak english !
ROLAND; JUPITER Sintetizadores digitais. Muito Bom!!! Gostei Muito Bom!!!!..inicio dos sintetizadores

Man I need 1 of these (after I get my 1st OB-xa :-) lol
Sooo gooood tunes!!
Next review Jupiter-4 Compuphonic synth of 1978, please
Couldn't agree with you more, Roland could absolutely clean up if they remade a Jupiter 8 (and I mean a PROPER Jupiter 8 resissue, not that digital shite that has NO RIGHT to bear the Jupiter name), or even a SH101..Look at the success Korg are having with the MS20...Roland's marketing department must be from the Planet Zogg.
I had one of these...traded it for an Ensoniq ESQ-1 (this was before the 'techno' revolution that made analogs ultra-expensive) and boy do I regret it. :-(
I had one of these in the 80s/90s but all the LEDs didn't flash like on this one - is it because of a software update?
The video is filmed at 60fps while the LEDs are powered by a 50Hz alternative current. The LEDs seem to flicker because of that difference
@@marmite-land Oh thanks, I should have realised it was something like that.
Indeed it did
Finally !!! Thank you for showing this beast!! I have one hi hi :)
So you're saying you want to learn subtractive synthesis? There are a lot of videos on UA-cam about that, and then there's Sound On Sound Synth Secrets (Google it) if you want to go further than the usual sounds.
They dont resolution blink. It is because of the shutter on the camera.
It's all about the Curtis chips :)
The curtis chips sounded much better on the prophet-5.
@@SPAZZOID100 SSM chips sounded better in the rev2 Prophet 5.
wow o0* - fantastic big machine!
Yes, soon ;)
Hokey smokes.... I had no idea it could do a not-too-cheesy piano sound (15:26)
Jupiter-6といえば、サザンですね。とくに原由子さん。「ミス・ブランニューデイ」や「マチルダBABY」のイントロはこれですから。
***** its still not cold though is it compared to many modern synths
please make a demo of the new Nord Lead 4 or Clavia Nord Stage 2!!
I should have gotten THIS instead of going to university. Damn.
You get better value for money out of a synth than university.
wait so he had chorus on the entire first 12 minutes???
that was really super neat @17:03
JUPITER-8もお願いします
AMEN!
@19:10 - 19:30
How about a demo of the Roland JX-10? :)
Sorry but no plug match the real thing . Except if you only compare with UA-cam Sound compression
Please review / demo some Moog Synthesizers, like the Little Phatty or Voyager!
i Have one, with Vco problems,.. search for repair...
Flashing led lights? Is it normal?
its just an effect of the scan rate of the ccd in the camera, all the old synths and even some of the newer ones do this (watch his andromeda a6 vid for example)
this was one of the lasts true synths made. after that they became digital
+michael jagger Prophet 6
+DrillB1T You mean the Prophet 600? Yep, that one came out at about the same time.
no i don't
DrillB1T juno 106?
+DrillB1T Yep, you mean the recently released Prophet 6. Will check it out. Thanks for pointing it out.
Wish I had one, my module only has a few switches!
All you need is a MIDI keyboard and some free plugins. You don't need a huge expensive analog synth to get good sounds.
Saw Wave from Sound Canvas could be a recreation of the initial sound on the video...
~1:37 reminded me so much of wizball (commodore 64).
