AN1X is so awesome. People get so hung up on the 'VA' thing, but that's really such an oversimplification of what it can do. It certainly CAN sound analogue and warm, with unbelievably convincing filters. But it also excels at sounding PROUDLY digital and doing things analogue synths can't do. A lot of people don't realize it even has some FM abilities so can do those DX-7 kinda bell tones. But where it really shines, is patch in an analogue sound in scene 1, and a digital/FM sound in scene 2... then morph between them! You can stumble upon sounds that are truly out of this world. I really wish Yamaha would make a true successor to this guy, pref with an added FM-X engine. The Reface CS is cool, but way too limited by comparison.
@@KUPHSER How is that underrated? SY77/SY99 both go for pretty decent sums of money at this point. People know they're awesome. AN1x is different, because now that we're living in an age with a resurgence of 'real' analogue synths, people think AN1x is just an emulation, so obsolete. But that couldn't be further from the truth.
This was a very desirable machine back in 1997. Way cheaper than Nord Lead 2 or JP-8000, but still expensive for a 10-voice polyphony synthesizer at $1,200. I had the budget CS1x back then ($600). I remember drooling all over the AN1x.
Wish I had bought one when I had the chance, but I have that many synths, I can hardly move around the house as it is, running out of space. give me hardware anytime. VST's are good, but for me, there's nothing like owning the real thing.I don't understand a word your saying friend, but I really enjoy your demo's.Thanks for sharing.Greetings from Sheffield uk. LOL .
I am so lucky to have bought one last night. mint with original box, and a pair of JBL studio speakers and Stand thrown in for £370. I've been after one for years, and never thought I'd ever own one. As the gentleman has so well demonstrated. This Synth is unique, and sounds great. I have five Yamahas now. they are just so overlooked and underrated. But to me, they are great Synths, and well worth looking at. If you can afford one, get one now while still cheap. i have a lot of Synths, Roland, Korg, Novation, some real classics. Even my JP8000 doesn't sound as warm or as good.Thank you for sharing.
Sounds like you had a bargain. I have had mine for quite a while and it is a keeper for me.Lots of peeps write off VA's altogether. Fine stick to Analogue i say. Both have their merits. I was thinking of buying an EX-5 but having seen the menu diving to get the AN sounds have shelved that. The AN1X is simply so easy to create your noises and as long as there is still a working model i will have one:) Enjoy
Thank you. I don't mind VA's. and the AN1X is probably the best. I have an EX5 Haven't had a chance to play it much. but at the silly prices, some synths are going for these days, these are real bargains and future investments. I won't sell my AN1X either it's a keeper and mint condition. So neglected, but now very sought after. Enjoy your too friend.
This is a fantastic synth. No other VA comes close apart from Virus which is better. I had a Fusion 8Hd, Nova's and Roland's. all good but not as good. Virus is in different league in terms of price.:)
I agree fantastic. I have a Roland JD800, it's a monster, a Juno 106, and a JP8000, D50. Great synths, but not close, the JP8000 sounds very digital to me. Do you remember in the early 90's, no one wanted analog anymore, they went for digital. Now, prices have gone silly for analog.I'd love a virus by the way. Nedd a bigger piggy bank. Take care. Thank you. moog.
i use to own this keyboard i use to spend all day making new sounds it was one of the best keyboards ever made i miss it and wish i never sole it at times
The AN1x without question is the most "analog" sounding VA. That thing has so much bass man you will blow your walls off!! It's fat and warm as hell. By far the best bang for the buck too. That's why I love the EX5 I have. It has the same Yamaha AN engine but also is a sample based rompler and lastly has the legendary FDSP engine. BEAST synth.
easily the best sounding and most convincing VA.... yamaha got it right with this one. doesnt have the interface of the ms2000 or jp8000, but sounds way better than both of them.
i agree on the yamaha filters and brightness of the sound. i have many analog synths but sometimes just an internal sound from the rs7000 will do the job with some filtertweaks
For real, I think the higher THD+N ratio in the late 90's and early 2000's converters helped make some great sounding digital products. From my Walkman to my Motu 1224, I think everything sounded great during that era. You can really hear a difference in synths like this, the Supernova, and the MS2000. I mean, everyone agrees Virus B sounds better than Virus Ti. Things nowadays have more features, but the character of the sound in digital products seems to have taken a back seat to tech specs.
Later, I abort to try PLG board and fortunately I've procured a brand-new AN1X from ebay recently (on Oct, 2013) . Right now, I finally found the real AN1X can't be truely replaced by so-called PLG15-AN board no matter two or three board combined...... Frankly, I probably not be a professional guy but it really sounds something better and awesome on AN1X comparing to PLG150-AN..... It persuades me to keep AN1X baby on hand forever cus no gear can replace AN1X, it's unique one truely.......
Yuhjer Tsai you are maybe saying that because you have the real thing? i said that to my self when i still have my dx7... its true its warmer and real thing is real.. but in sole other aspects you can do better on other boards.. let say i got the sample of the dx7 electric piano on my nord stage, and ill layer that to a synth or any other samples on the nord and use a pedal to bring the sample smoothly. i also do that on my mks-20 rack but sometimes its heavy lugging all those stuffs Just for few sounds... so now a days its practicality and also depends on the needs.. if you only play at home or studio, then i agree on you that the real thing is better and real.. but in live situations, 😀 so so so. 👍🏼👍🏼 🥂 cheers
@LittleNegrillio lol, totally different synth dude. The motif range is sample based, the AN1x is an analog modeling synth. The motifs will give you pianos, orchestral sounds, and digital pads, and well... anything really. It's just that the AN has the controls and sounds you might want from an analog synthesizer, and it will deliver those sounds better than the motif alone. -However- I think you can put the PLG-AN expansion inside the rack ES. That will effectively add the AN engine inside it.
If there's software, there's source code. Kitchen microwaves have source code. The fact that the code is embeded, it still is a computer. Modular analog synthesizers were not computers, they generated sounds with electrical circuit alone, without converting it to digital and back to analog. Unless AN1x or Nord Lead use discrete circuit for each voice of their polyphony, I would consider both soft synths. Yamaha DX7 uses 400-series circuits for each voice; consequently, it's more of a hardware
Sure it's not as sexy as a JP-8000, a Nordlead, or a Virus, but… the AN1x is loaded with insane amounts of raw sonic power. It definitely deserves a sexier housing and better interface too (with lots of knobs/buttons), although it's "stupid friendly" once you figured out how it works. Not sexy, but I love it anyway.
I am saying that AN1x might be considered a soft synth because its heart is probably a DSP chip (just like in Clavia Nord Lead). A DSP chip is a programmable processor (Motorola 56000 in case of the Nord) and the sawthoth, square, or whatever basic waves are modeled in software. Unless each voice has a separate circuit, I would argue this is a soft synth.
Thanks to UJIIE-SAN's performance and demo, you do really impressived me to buy a AN1X... You know, I was obtained two PLG150-AN boards and put it into Motif-Rack ES, also setup to combine 2 PLG-AN boards as voice "expanded" means 5 voices + 5 voices = 10 voices. It seems the sound engine structure is equal to AN1X, however, it doesn't.... many things sound different not just effect SOMEHOW comparing to UJIIE-SAN's demo....
okay, this is the part I am getting confused. Is the AN1x a vintage synthesizer, or is it soft synth? I mean, the synthesis engine is all implemented in software (albeit running on a dedicated hardware). As far as being vintage from 1997, to me AN1x still sounds pretty darn good, even better than 2010 Motif XF, at least in the analog synth emulation department. And it still sounds better than latest and greatest iPhone or iPad. So, I don't understand where is the progress in today's gear?
The only other VA that can stand up to this is the Alesis Ion, AN1x sounds absolutely superb, I don't know how they did it but this synth has such expression and character, I guess a lot of people gets turned off by its looks (I for one wish it had more real-time control), but soundwise this (and Ion) are easily the "slightly forgotten" gems of the VA-jungle..
I don't know wether it's really the best, but: I remember within its presets there is the best out of the box simulation for the lead sound of Pink Floyds Welcome to the machine.
Have you got a video about Yamaha CS1x? I'm wondering about buying one, and on youtube there is no one who plays and explores synth like Katsunori UJIIE . I'd love to see possibility of this synt in your hands.
I've owned all the usual hardware VA's and sold the last ones this year, except for the Virus TI and this. Out of the two of them, the AN1X is the one that begs to be explored the most. They're getting hard to find, and I'm tempted to get a second one before they become a pricey curiosity.
I have an AN1X and Ive seen people put patches (different voices) on to the synth, I have downloaded AN1X edit and have the synth plugged in via MIDI to USB, but I cant seem to put the new sounds on there :(
Maybe because Yamaha and Stanford University hold pattents for physical modelling. That could be the main reason, who knows. Everybody else seems just lost when it comes to physical modeling, aside from Roland's COSM, which is quite fenomenal actually.
***** I found one a few days ago! The unit was completely forgotten in the corner of a dusty room! The volume knob is missing but that can be replaced. It was so dirty that I had to open it in order to give it a good clean. It looks really good now! And the price was fine!
God! Why old synths sounds SO great - MORE better and ALIVE than a new one, like a viruses, novation ultra/mini novas, roland JD-XA/Xi/Airas and others (exclude the Boutique series and Clavia Nord - they sounds very nice)..
While i think the AN1X sounds great, i also do like the sound of the Virus, and the Nord Leads. It is pretty amazing how good this thing sounds though, considering its age. And i do agree that a lot of nowadays VA's just don't cut it, same with soft synths. Seems to be rather that developers don't hit the nerve with their products really, the technology definitely improved.
@LittleNegrillio Maybe, but the Virus is $2,000 and the AN1x is about $450. Seriously man, for that much money you could buy an original TI and AN1x together and a have a little left over.
Sorry mate, its software in a box. All the sound is generated on a dsp chip and there is no hardware influencing the sound other than the DA converters. Don't mean to be harsh, but you really have no idea...
The EX5 while a very cool synth cannot be compared to a AN1x for virtual analog, Its like trying to compare a Volkswagon Jetta to a Porsche Carrera sure they are made in the same factory but two totally different driving experiences. The AN1x really has no equal.
Most of the original patches are crap and barely scratch the surface of what this thing can do. Once you learn how to design your own sounds with this it's amazing. Also the JayB patches are incredible.
it's definitely a great synth - but let's face it, when this dude is playing, every synth sounds great!

about 1/4 of them are good
Yeahhhh, finally got one :) and Katsunori's video shure was an inspiration to get one !
Edit, now 3 years later i'm happy I got a second AN1x = 256 patches in total ;-))
Congrats! I just bought a cs1x! Now just waiting the arrive of the toy!
Excellent demo of the blue beasty. There is another plus , the quality and feel of the keys is one of the things I really love about it.... Quality.

I love the filters. Very warm and punchy. Same filters are found in FSR1 if I'm not misstaken, an even more awesome sounding synth.
Finally, I got brand-new one for collection, a legendary gear....
So many memories of that Yamaha. Thank you.
Listen at 08:02 and you'll understand why it is all about the YAMAHA AN1x.
sounds like something the Montage/MODX does with the superknob

Look up sound demos by JayB (Dance/ Trance) and
Don Solaris (Soundscapes/ leftfield), to REALLY hear what this synth can do!
anyone know if the yamaha AN1x can be used as a midi controller in ableton (on Mac)?. I want to buy this synth, but I need to know that first. THANKS

what speakers do you use Mr. Katsunori ujlle ?
very good demo !!!
抜群にいいですね!
Kats is best
It seems as if Yamaha discontinued all alternative synthesis methods in all the PLG-150 cards, including the AN, DX, VL, that really sucks!

the roland super natural is even better than cosm.....and the jupiter 80 is amazing with 256 poly and upnto 40 occilators
nice playing and real nice synth
IS THE BEST VA
agreed
I sold mine somewhere last year... I regret is so much that I'm trying to find another one. They are now difficult to find unfortunately.

4:32 THAT SOUND.....
They look like MSP5's, but I'm not sure. Definitely Yamahas though. I'm using a pair of Yamaha HS-80m's and they are superb.
whats the name of the patch 10;29?
great synth!
Awesome for trance music

Умница!Где такой soundset взять?
I know I'm in the minority, but I wasn't overly impressed. It's good for what it is. I loved that last patch tho. really nice.
The Yamaha AN1x can do many impressive sounds in world class.
Master. :)
Yamaha took over where Roland left behind.
I would pick a digital Yamaha (either VA or FM) over a Roland VA anytime.
i want this synthesizer
i made some music with a simulator synth on Jupiter 8V2
You 're great!
04:30 good
This synth is amazing.
04:30 anyone know the name of this patch?
I fired up my AN1X for you, I think it's "Megadrone" with arpeggiator off
oh that's the same guy from "Birus TI SNO!"
i love that dude!!!
@LittleNegrillio
