I used to have a DX 5 midi module, I cannot remember getting these fantastic sounds from it back in the 80’s, if I did I would never have sold it, that was a great Demo, thank you. Ken in Scotland
I don't believe there was ever a DX5 in module form. Are you perhaps thinking of the TX7 (which is a DX7 module not a DX5 module) or perhaps the TX 216? The TX 216 was about as close as you could get to a DX5 in rack mount form as it was essentially two DX7s, which is what the DX5 is.
This is one of the best demo of a synth I've ever heard..... Ok, the demo and the player are great, but the DX5 is AWESOME!!!! This is a synth from 1985!!!
As much as I love the dx5, these classic fm sounds sound better on a montage. Montage has much more polyphony, and can layer multiple 8operator fm patches.. that combined with optional effects, filters, and samples will make for much more thick and rich sounds. Dx5 is one of the most beautiful fm synths of all time but technically the montage can top these sounds with ease

In the context of these retro-future, synthwave, etc music styles which are a thing, I think it worth saying that despite the Wiki entry on this, it was digital synths like the Yamaha DXs, PPGs, and Ensoniqs rather than analogue which defined the 80s. As a Sound On Sound senior writer memorably commented, analogue instruments are essentially one sound - or variants of a brassy sound.
Digital (FM / sampling / additive) - definitely 80s sound. But "analog = brass/saw"??? I'll see your filter sweep and raise you a pulse width modulation if that's all the sounds people did with analog in the 70s/80s.
Once I started pairing my DX7 with my TX7 to play DX5 patches, the regular DX7 patches sounded kind of flat and I almost always play them together now. You have a lot of good sounds here!
@@Shiniobi yeah, if you have two DX7 or TX7. You load the A and B patches to each one, then I have them panned left and right. Most of the stock DX5 and DX1 patches will play this way.
@@glennwallace9203 I've never used the 802 or the mkii dx7. But it sounds like you should be able to load up the DX5 patches. I've done that on my SY-77 with ok results.

About 140 DX1s and 4400 (IIRC) DX5s were made, so yeah, not very many, but you almost always can find one or two DX5s on eBay. Programming the 5 is a bit easier than the 7 just because of the extra buttons and sliders, but you still have to get your head around the idea of FM (PM, actually) in order to be effective. I'll always have a soft spot for the old Yamaha synths - I've got a DX7, DX5, TX7, TX216, and SY77 (and a TX16W too, even though it's a sampler) and no intention of getting rid of any of them. That said, I almost never actually record with them. Dxed is *so* much quieter (Yamaha really did not put good DAC hardware in the DX line, even the DX1), and there's really nothing I can do with the real hardware that I can't do with the VST.
I have a DX5 which definitely flattens out the programming interface from the DX7, and with a couple good books it was not too difficult to get a good working knowledge of how sounds are put together with it. ( by John Chowning and David Bristow, and by Howard Massey are my go-tos.)
Is there anything better than the good old DX5? I've been trying to achieve the same result by using two Dexed plugins simultaneously, one loaded with the A bank and the other one with the B bank (each sound was composed by two patches which were the same instrument but one was slightly different than the other)
I’m usually more on the analog side of things. The DX-7 always sounds somehow thin to me. But the DX-5 is absolutely gorgeous. I guess ‘layering’ is the magic word.
I owned a 7 along with a TX7 module which gave you the same capabilities as a DX5- except with 61 keys instead of 76. I then went out and bought a KX88 controller keyboard. The problem with the DX5, (and also the DX1for that matter) was that you couldn’t find them. Where were they? I never saw them for sale in any music store. I guess you had to special order them, they were frightfully expensive in their day.

Excellent sound!
Wow it sounds huge a far better then 7
That’s cause it was essentially two 7’s in one box
Is there anything better than the good old DX5? I've been trying to achieve the same result by using two Dexed plugins simultaneously, one loaded with the A bank and the other one with the B bank (each sound was composed by two patches which were the same instrument but one was slightly different than the other)
Beautiful mate :-)
this synth looks brand new and just out of the packet which is strange considering it came out in the 80's lol

Hey there, terrific demo of this beast. Were these the original factory presets or your own?
Wonderful music!
Did you add the effects with your DAW or are you using external effects unit?
No FX just programmed modulation and layering
3:19 Awesome Ep sound! Could I find it in any preset collection? Is It a dual combination performance? Thanks for the beautifull music
