    1:07 Tenor saxophone
    3:15 Shakuhachi(Bamboo flute)
    5:04 Trumpet
    6:11 Bagpipe
    6:46 Strings
    7:13 Bassoon
    7:25 Clarinet
    7:51 Electric bass
    8:20 Distortion guitar
    8:50 JetRipBow(Musical instruments that are not real.)
    10:15 Dinosaur(In the process where the neck is 20 meters long.)
    10:54 Didgeridoo(In fact it is not changing the pitch.)
    11:38 Alto Saxophone
    12:12 Synth
    12:44 Middle Eastern ethnic flute
    13:19 Sitar
    13:49 Trumpet + Sax
    Each instrument has different material, size, length and so on.
    Also, the oscillating parts are different.(Mouthpiece,lead,string,Body itself etc.)
    VL-1 does not use sampling, all sounds are simulated by virtual instruments.
    The wonderful thing with the expressive power of VL-1 is the change in fine pitch and overtone characteristics accompanying volume intensity.
    I am sorry that my writing is difficult to read.
    Thank you Google translation.

    I recently went to see an old friend who I wrote music with in the early to mid 1990s. I used my VL on just one instrumental piece. His girlfriend was sat listening to our old music for the first time and is appreciative of music in general. When this instrumental came on she immediately asked if it was a real bass guitar, despite all the other songs having good bass samples and competent playing. This made me smile inside very deeply!

    I have had a VL-1m, the rack mount module version of VL-1, since 1996. This one makes still great sound today! I think it is a legend in the history of synthesizers.

    I don't know why manufacturers didn't continue forward with this type of modeling synthesis. It could have been so much more interesting than just everything analog all the time. What a pity.

    Yamaha makes the best synths, period. Look past all the fan boy hype, and the marketing, and you’ll find this to be true.
    I always come back to Yamaha. Own one flagship of each major manufacturer, but I’m always on the Yamaha. I just realized this today too.

    I can't believe I have never heard of this keyboard. I have been a keyboardist since I was a kid (a LONG time ago!) and I've had several different professional keyboards over the decades from most of the major manufacturers, including Yamaha, Korg, Roland and Nord, but I don't ever remember seeing this keyboard for sale in a store/online or reading about it. I'm assuming that's because they unfortunately did not as many as other flagship keyboard models, which was likely due to the cost of ~$6000 when it was released in 1994. It's amazing how expressive, organic and "real" sounding some of these virtual instruments are, especially considering it was the mid 90's and they are all produced by modeling, not sampling.

      Sad thing is that this stuff been around like 30 years now and companies won't give us this type of physical modeling unless you have roland yamaha or korg there are few vst's out there that do this but don't sound the same you can check this guy on you tube Ben Jordan he has a few videos on some vst's that do this.

    There's something deliciously nuts about a Scotsman watching a Japanese man using a massively expensive synth to play a beautifully modeled bagpipe snippet of Scotland The Brave... :D Brilliant synth - too ahead of its time and too expensive. Virtual acoustic was the big thing of the mid-90s, with the VL1, Korg's original Wavedrum and the Roland VG8. Only Roland seems to have really stuck by it sadly, although Korg have brought a new mini-Wavedrum out...

      Actually there's way more Physical Modelling out there than I expected. Both Logic Pro & Ableton include physical synths. All the electronic piano sounds in Logic are modelled by Sculpture, and similarly KORG's OASYS. Reaktor has had the Steam Synth for 10+ years, then you have PianoTeq, various UAD string synths etc. So the technology is alive and out there, you simply might not realise it!

      Actually Physical Modelling can be found in various mid to high range synths. What I think is still unbeatable is the expressiveness of Yamaha's breath controllers and that is actually the key for a natural sound.

    Went searching for physical modelling and found your video - I had forgotten about the Yamaha VL1 - some great sounds but you obviously need to learn the correct techniques to get the best out of it - Impressive for the time it was made - you also don't need to have massive sample memories with physical modelling

    In 1993, I remember going into Goodman Music in North Hollywood and they had one of these in a small demonstration room at the rear of the store. 3 hours later I emerged, stunned. If I'd had the money, I would have walked out with that beast right then and there.... the most amazing synth since the Minimoog. And Yamaha shelved this line of instruments? Ouch. :(

    • @boptillyouflop
      @boptillyouflop 10 років тому +2

      Romplers sell.
      It's unfortunate but that's why they stopped all the FM synths and analog sims. That also what explains how Roland ended up making something like the jupiter 80.

    • @emilshere
      @emilshere 8 років тому +3

      The jupiter 80 is more than just a rompler.....they sampled lots of oscilators so you can build your own sounds and they also have waveform oscilators. Its not a bad synth for creating sounds

    • @boptillyouflop
      @boptillyouflop 8 років тому +3

      emilshere
      All the Roland stuff starting from the JV1080 have filters on samples (with envelopes per layer for volume + cutoff + pitch and LFOs), so yeah you can use them as synths, and it's basically all successive improvements of the same tech. I'll admit you can do lots of stuff with that, which is why that tech has lasted for over 20 years...

    Hmm, no other modeling synth then. Today it is a very common concept (software mostly), even though most of them are not in the high quality the VL-1 provides and often just one model (e.g. strings). A good example today is the Roland V-Piano, the AAS-String Studio VS-1, KORG brought the Z1 in 1997 with physical modeling and MOSS technologie.

    I have the EX5 too & it's a great synth. I'd like to try a BC3 with the EX5 as well. It would be great with the VL. The Korg Triton (I have one) MOSS board is also capable of VL. I bet a BC3 would be cool with the Triton too.

    • @keykrazy
      @keykrazy 6 років тому +2

      Have an EX5 as well. Just dusted it off last night, loaded a new bank of sounds from ex5tech (UK mirror), and was really blown away by a couple of patches within the bank that reminded me of this (or perhaps some other) VL-1 demo.
      I've tried plugging in the photo-optic sensor from a Mike Matthew's Soul Kiss wah pedal into the EX5, but no dice. :-( The light sensor on it has an 1/8" jack, but it took me a few years before i ever thought to try hooking it into the EX5. The Soul Kiss is a rare find. In the only demo's i could find they are holding the sensor between their teeth and then opening/closing their mouth to alter the amount of wah, but i found it worked much better by lying it on the floor and waving my foot across it. ...You know, like an exo-solar planet transiting its sun. ;-)

    This is probably the most revolutionary synthesizer since the Minimoog, and yet VL1 has close to zero recognition, and Minimoog is prized left and right, front and rear. I guess the price of the VL1 was too steep, and public turned away from it, and Yamaha being business conscious company, killed it, together with incredible 16-note polyphony acoustic modeling synth VP1. Very very very sad story...

    Yes, Yamaha had such great technological developments, but the VL series didn't sell well, public didn't buy it so Yamaha turned their back on Virtual Acoustic Synthesis, which is such a pity. Hopefully one day in the future someone pick up where Yamaha left off. Maybe software synthesizers have been there for years, I don't know, I am not using soft synths. Also, VL1 was followed by 16-note polyphony VP1, but only two or three VP1's were sold...

  • @boptillyouflop
    @boptillyouflop 12 років тому

    That's why Roland has rehashed the Sound Canvas over and over for like 20 yeahs now, and that the new synths are stuff like the Jupiter 80... too bad yeah.
    My guess here is that the pro market has moved on to VSTs so that's where you'll see a ressurgence of more complex synths if there is one.

    I saw some guy on here, doing cool things w/a BC3 & Korg Kronos. I have a Korg Kronos X 88 & I'd love to try it w/a BC3.
    Yamaha obviously can't re-release a synth like the CS-80. That would be too expensive. But surly they could bring back the CS-5, 10, or 15, like Korg did w/the MS-20/Mini? If Yamaha could keep the new CS in the $499-$699 range ((MS-20 Mini = $599) I think they'd have a lot of buyers. Profits might not be HUGE, but they wouldn't lose money.

      I am using Logic’s sculpture since it came out a while ago and I do have the Yamaha WX5 breath-controller. Unfortunately “sculpture” is nowhere close to real-time control compared to the VL Yamahas. I tried every possible combination of parameters to make it “sing” like this synth here - with no success. However - “sculpture” is of course a great instrument on its own and perfect to create all kinds of strange sounds…but it is not a VL

    If the market/money was there, I guess they'd still be making them. I don't know what;s up w/Yamaha. They don't seem at all interested in the Analog "niche" market. They dropped Analog/Physical modeling (offered only as expansions boards, but came stock in the older EX5) Motif & currently offer no analog products. Korg on the other hand, has analog modeling in the Kronos & a whole host of Analog products & has even re-released the MS-20! (mini) Yamaha/Roland need to wake up & get w/it IMO.

    It wasn't successful commercially. They sold very few units. 99% of sales are home keyboards and sample-playback keyboards. That's the sad reality world we live in.

    after checking the price when it was released in 1994
    its no wonder why they failed , even its an innovation of that era but its can't find its marketing point, too expensive and being duophonic is not enough for gigging musician
    and for studio ,you can find much better instrument at this price
    Initial price at 4000pounds
