- Star Wars X-Wing. The Classic PC Game originally released in the early 90's is getting remade by passionate fans. I am so down for this.
Star Wars: X-Wing is a space simulation video game, the first of the X-Wing combat flight simulator game series. The player's character flies starfighters, including the eponymous X-wing, for the Rebel Alliance as part of a narrative that precedes and parallels the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Thankfully the mod authors and teams like this are producing some great Star Wars fan based content. Its to bad we aren't seeing much in the way of new Star Wars games. :/
I am so down for a remastered X-Wing release :D
Have a fantastic day!!!
Hillary sucks would be the worst president ever
@@wiedzmin8204 really? Not the time or the place man.
@@peasant_shots really? It's the internet
Looks like somebody forgot it's not 2016 anymore.
It’s a crime shack. Great games with potential like this being locked away should be illegal
Hi there, I'm Fek'Leyr Targ from the XWVM team.
First of all, thank you very much for the coverage as well as the kind comments.
We're looking forward to bring you the Demo release containing the Y-Wing Historical Missions as soon as the most critical assets are in place, one of them being the recently implemented Corellian Corvette by TerryB.
Assuming we don't get a C&D (fingers crossed), we'd love to do TIE Fighter, XvT and XWA as well.
While the possibility for a C&D always exists despite all precautions like requiring the original game and not redistributing copyrighted assets, we stay optimistic that it won't happen. The copyrighted assets used as placeholders in the current version are going to be replaced by our own.
And yes, the original CD-ROMs are supported as well as the digital re-releases, even the German CD-ROM Edition from 1994.
We're also looking into supporting the CD-ROM of the rare MacOS-Port. :-)
Thanks a lot! You're our only hope Obi ... Fek'Ley Targ! ;D
Thanks.
However, I'm not the only one.
It was Azrapse who started this project in the first place, with many more people coming aboard to contribute over the years. :)
You guys are making my day. Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance were the games of my childhood (never played X-Wing though). Ive been waiting for ages to see something like this and now its finally happening. Is there any way to donate sth to you guys?
Even though we apprechiate the offer, we can't accept any donations as this would increase the risk of receiving a C&D more than anything else.
+FekLeyrTarg's Video. It looks amazing. Are you going to make the missions bigger...with more ships and missions? Once I started playing XWA, I preferred building my own missions with more X-Wings and Tie Fighters, and capital ships.....all out war!!! Nothing compares to X-wing and Tie Fighter in my books.
Rogue Squadron might have been your jam Cap, but X-Wing and Tie Fighter were mine. Color me excited!
Just so you know , you can play x-wing alliance all fully modded out in 1080 p right now also all compatibility issues are fixed and re skins for almost all units are near completed . Have fun :) xwaupgrade.com/ ( joystick mandatory ) Base game available at GoG for all you noob internet scrubs
Yeah, the people modding X-Wing Alliance did an amazing job.
I tried it with a fake joystick program like pp joy so you can use your mouse, it works but its certainly not the same compared to a real joystick
For the life of me I can't find the CDs for XWA. Kinda ticking me off, I think someone may have walked off with them.
Just buy it on GoG bud it's cheap and comes with all the compatibility mods , ( they are a whore to install from a disk install ) TBH the prise of the goG version is worth the hassle that modding sk install is worth for moddern systems
I was dissapointed when they stopped making those sims and made the arcadey Rogue Squadron instead. I've also played the XWA upgrade. Getting my head tracking working with it by using mouselook made it really fun.
iMuse was the dynamic music technology that would blend the MIDI music tracks to suit the action. It was very clever for the time - it wouldn't just kick into "let's fight" the moment you opened fire, it would do things like actually start the classic "Death Star dogfight" music as enemy vessels were flying into engagement range, timed so that it would get through the opening build-up and hit the full-on combat section just as you got close enough to open fire.
I really hope this project comes to fruition - the original X-Wing was the first game I played on PC, and I have a huge amount of nostalgia for the whole series.
The fact that the rebuilt Win95 CD version stripped out iMuse in favor of the film soundtrack disappointed me to no end. Not even real John Williams beats out MIDI John Williams reacting to the action in real time. Especially in TIE Fighter where the music is turned on its head and you get "heroic" renditions of the Imperial March, and "sinister" renditions of the various alliance themes.
I love the heroic Imperial March. Also yes, the original John Williams music is great, but hearing it used over and over again in the mid to late 90s Star Wars games made me miss the MIDI scores.
I'm so excited for this I poured hours into both this game and the old tie fighter game, I tried playing them again recently and it's just not the same. I hope the add TIE Fighter to the list
Better yet do the balance of power you could fly campaign for either side
The BoP campaign isn't as good a single player experience compared to X-wing, TIE fighter and XWA, you can tell in places it's been made with coop in mind (which is a general problem of XvT mind you).
imuse was great back then. the music queueing up when you needed. it just made the gameplay so goood
Oh my GOD YES! They keep giving us these crappy Battlefront games, but THIS is what we want.
Exactly what I was thinking!
What are you talking about, Battlefront 2 Space fights are AMAZING.
@@Commander_Shepard. Yeah, as much as I think this is cool, the B2 space combat is pretty slick.
have you played these games back in the day? tie fighter was my first pc game on my first pc. still the best game ever. its great that someone is making these game accessible for a new generation.
@@Commander_Shepard. Oh hell no. LUL
27 years old, this game beats the crap out of StAr wArs SqUaDrOnS
Oh man, this is so great! I really hope they give TIE Fighter the same treatment. Now THAT was a game from the perspective of the Empire. Take notes, EA.
I shouldn't imagine it'd be too difficult, chances are TIE Fighter was built using most of the same code as X-Wing.
HASEnoncorperated yeah, I think it was with just a couple UI changes. Otherwise I believe the games are near identical
>EA
they're gonna charge you extra to unlock stuff you know.
Just leave EA out of this. They would charge to cycle through firing modes and for access to different weapons. Just no.
Pretty much. TIE has some quality of life improvements in the engine, enough that it does make X-Wing feel kinda klunky by comparison but yeah I'd expect it to use the same basic file formats for its art assets.
I've said it before, I'll say it again - if you want the most immersive and realistic STAR WARS space combat experience, look no further than the _'SW: X-Wing'_ series of games. When it comes to SW space combat gameplay, nothing beats these games and with this new mod updating this game, it's even more untouchable now. Can't wait for this mod to come out... *_THE X-WING PC GAME SERIES RULES..._*
Wing Commander series including Privateer was pretty awesome also!
X-Wing Alliance is looking Great with all it's updated mods. Rogue Squadron I never got into because they did not allow a 1st person cockpit view.
Except NEW Battlefront 2. That beats all.
Commander Shepard _"Except NEW Battlefront 2. That beats all."_ - That's a great joke. Made me laugh. Thanks for that. After this crappy week, I needed the laughs.
@@SetFire2TheNightSky LMAO surely you don't believe any of these outdated arcade games could even reach the awesomeness of BF2.
X-Wing is the game that made me fall in love with PC games.
Awesome!! one of my favorite games of all times. i remember when i was 13, buying the collectors series edition which included xwing, tie fighter, and a demo version of Xwing vs tie fighter. such great memories. another great game in the series was x-wing alliance, which revolved around the fighter pilot ace azameen and the azameen family. great story, a shame they never came out with an expansion pack that finished up that story line. always wanted to see what happened to the azameen family after the battle of endor.
This is a classic. One of the best space games ever made. The missions, the difficulty, the authenticity to the Star Wars universe. Awesome
X-Wing was one of the BEST Star Wars gaming experiences of my life. This is exciting :)
This is one of the best games ever made , and it's sequel ( Tie -fighter ) is my #1 favorite game of all time . They both hold up REALLY well ( joystick mandatory )
tie fighter vs x-wing was good also
yes all in the series was good , for my personal order of favoritism is Tie-Fighter > X-wing alliance > X-wing . X-wing vs Tie-Fighter , also i consider GSF ( galactic star fighter ) in SWTOR the spiritual successor to x-wing alliance and i really enjoy it
The order of release was X-Wing, TIE Fighter, then XWvTF...
He was listing his favorites in order, which is basically the order I'd rank them in as well. Frankly Xwing vs Tie Fighter wasn't that good until its expac 'Balance of Power', mainly because it had no single-player campaign at all. It was just a pack of random missions meant for the budding multiplayer scene. TIE Fighter though...that game had one of the best single player campaigns of any Star Wars game ever made, and by far the absolute best campaign told from the bad guys perspective.
I personally didn’t grow up in the time this came out, but my dad introduced me to it. My favorite thing to do is bombing runs in my Y-Wing. Love that ship, favorite fighter of all of Star Wars :)
Had the added bonus of having its laser cannons and ion cannons located next to each other. So guaranteed hit if you lined up the target :)
i remember playing the heck outta that old xwing game with my 486 pc.
Awesome!
Didn't have that on my radar, thanks a lot for the heads up.
Btw. X-Wing Alliance also has a still active mod community updating graphics for that amazing game, worth a spotlight too i think.
Not Star Wars, just a really amazing (maybe the best ever) space sim, Freespace 2.
I might be a bit late to the party having had a closer look just recently after the vid about Rebel Galaxy Outlaws made me really want to play some games back from the golden age of space sims.
And there is a lot going on with Freespace 2 and modding.
Freespace 2 with updated graphics, a whole Freespace 1 remake using the updated Freespace 2, a fan made, fully voiced, sort of Freespace 3 called Blue Planet and whole total conversions i.e. Wing Commander Saga or the Babylon Project which is of course a Babylon 5 total conversion.
This makes me so happy. I hope they will be doing Tie Fighter next, I spent so much of my childhood on that gem. If EA aren't capable of making decent Star Wars games, it's nice to know the fans can step in. A star wars racer update wouldn't hurt either.
I remember back in the old days when you played star wars Tie fighters all day long, i never got the chance to play star wars x-wings since i loved the empire but i am still soo excited, can't wait for the final release of the mod!!
the new empire approves this message
X-Wing was more primitive and simplistic on account of being the older game, but the core gameplay was more or less the same. Though I much prefer Tie Fighter, I still recommend giving X-Wing a shot just to experience the roots of the series.
Fans make, lawyers cease and desist. RIP Apeiron.
"It's a safe bet the -Empire- EA knows we're here."
(Here's hoping those Incompetent pencil pushers leave the mod makers alone"
Don't count on it Disney is like CBS and paramount they can't stand not having 100% control!
KotOR Apeiron was forced to stop production today...
Gao Dan And it was not Disney’s doing. It was Lucasfilm’s. Such bull
@@rayvar_lothson43345 Disney owns ABC, pixar, lucasfilm and fox studios wake up!
@@Alakesss I'd keep working on it in secret, leak it, and dare disney to try something. They aren't charging for it and it's pretty much just a mod. EA is probably jealous that there aren't any micro transactions
Rogue Squadron is an arcade type game, X-wing was a sim and you would never be that close to a Star Destroyer without being shot up. This looks awesome :) I hope they don't dumb it down.
I dunno. The capital ships weren't that dangerous in any of the Star Wars space sims. Hell you could make enemy capital ships shoot at each other in TIE Fighter if you made them hit each other with their turbolasers (an exploit I used plenty of times). Actually, I can't recall capital ships in any space sim being any sort of threat until Freespace 2, where they made them so deadly to you and each other that you generally wanted to be as far away from them as possible once they started fighting.
I stumbled on this video and it made me so happy. I had X-Wing and Tie Fighter for MS DOS 6.0 back in the old Pentium 1 and 2 days. My childhood was pc gaming and spending hours in compusa looking at video game art. After waiting for so long I am glad there are fans that can upgrade the game to todays graphics.
1:33 That explosion, with the debris of the TIE Bomber tells me exactly how good of the graphically updates are. It's amazing!
Man, I LOVED this game back in the day. So great that a fan brought it back!
As someone who still plays XWA & XWVT, I've been watching this on Twitch with great interest :)
Wow! I love these old games, playing through X-wing Alliance right now. This would be incredible if it it makes it out to the public.
That is beautiful. Loved the game as a kid, playing coop with my brother and father. I remember falling off the woodchair while turning in dogfight with the joystick when the suction cups fails, good old times.
This is pretty cool, and I love that fans are still working on old games, to bring some life back into them.
What's pretty crazy though, is that this entire game, can be replicated in Space engineers (with out cut scenes), and IMO it would probably look even better.
They are trying to replicate the gameplay as faithfully as they can and use interactive 3D cockpits, I sincerely doubt the SE engine would allow for that.
Dude, you have not seen some of the models they've been working on for the latest built. It's like looking at a real life airfix kit, but somehow it's rendered in unity.
SE is great but this is absolutely going to be better.
@@RAFMnBgaming The progress is pretty good.
Why Lucas Arts never did this before the Disney take over blows my mind. An official release of something like this is literally a license to print money. Still my favorite Flight Sim Series to date. (X-wing/B-wing/Tie Fighter/X-wing vs. Tie Fighter/X-Wing Alliance).
Hey Disney, ditch EA and make an official version of this, something that uses every key on the keyboard like the original please. And best played with a HOTAS setup. (Hands on Throttle and Stick).
Will definitely be getting this when finished.
for an old game that came out when most of us were being born it still holds up even today, sure the pixels were still rough back then but from what I can see it's quite smooth in FPS. for those of you who had the honor of playing it We Salute You.
5 Years later, they are still working on it. I'm glad it hasn't been abandoned. It can be hard to stay dedicated to something that takes this long with no compensation. I still look forward to it's final release.
I knew there was a reason that I still have this game sitting on my shelf from 20 years ago. I LOVED this game. Can't wait until they're finished.
Cant wait for this and hopefully Tie Fighter, XvT and XWA of course
Got xwing, tie fighter, and xwing vs tie fighter; all original releases and been hoping they did this someday. Starfighter mode in swtor is as good as we had... this looks like it will be a very fun memory lane to go down... can't wait.
I was 9 years old when I first played this. X-wing was the game that made me a Star Wars fan. I didn't even know of the movies then. I still have the strategy guide in my room.
So many great fan created Star Wars projects in the works.
They don't have much choice, becaue nowadays we the fans don't have any legitime single player Star Wars game available at all thanks to Disney/EA. (I am curently playing with Dark Forces using by XL enginge.) In the past 1,5 years I have completed several old Star Wars games such as: Jedi Knight, Mysteries of the Sith, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy, Shadows of the Empire. The real old Star Wars games I Will never forget. It's a shame we don't have any new single player Star Wars experience since the so called Disney’s acquisition of LucasFilm.
I just hope they don't get cancelled either by Disney/EA or the creators themselves.
I've seen one too many fan projects fail before.
Wow. Just three days ago I thought I would love to have a proper story driven campaign of a pocket carrier like the far star. This is so close to it! Thumbs up
I played the hell out of the original disk and Collector's CD-ROM versions when they came out back in the day. It was like a dream come true to fly these bad boys. Especially the good ol' Y-wing. Was always my favorite starfighter.
Man, I've been eagerly awaiting this mod's completion for what seems like an eternity. lol
This, project Aiperion, what's next? A Republic Commando fan remake? God I hope so.

Thanks for the update Shack. This looks incredible.
I STILL have my old copies of X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, and my old flight sticks... Can't wait for this!!!
If they do this for Tie fighter I may never leave the house again.
(and we will)
Now only if they did this for the TIE-Fighter game...
Give it time.
The authors said they are more focused on xwing because its older and needs the update
THIS... is what got me into Star Wars and sim games. I toggled invincibility and unlimited ammo because I was still too young. Who else remembers installing the original game on pc with all those floppy disks?
OMG can't wait, quite possibly the best series of star wars games ever made
OMG have my prayers being heard in the end? X-Wing was my first game ever in 1994. Back in the days I was playing it without sound until Win95 came out because we couldn't find a disk with drivers for the sound blaster card 🤣 life before internet...
Anyway, I want that game to come out. The modders are doing an amazing job here 👍
Nice! I've been playing this and the sequel Tie Fighter and was wondering why nobody ever modded it. I hope they do Tie Fighter also, that would be amazing
Basically the engine Totally Games used is not very mod friendly, XWA is the title which has more mod support and even in that case installing the XWAupgrade mod was a bit on a nightmare before they made the installer.
You can find it online and I highly recommend it. The Original X-Wing CD was the best as it had great music and your wingmen got better with experience. You even had music cues as to events happening (like failing the mission). You could also find Fan Made programs to make your own missions and alter your ships. The X-Wing 95 did not have any of this.
Remember playing this from floppy disk on my 1993 486 pc back in the day. This mod looks amazing.
Omg! That’s amazing! This blows me away! My jam was x-wings and tie fighter!
I've been following this project for quite some time on Mod DB, and it looks very promising indeed. I grew up playing the X-Wing series, and they remain the most immersive Star Wars experiences for me. I can't wait to play this when it's released!
one of my fav games of all time. i still play it so much. this is insane. beyond hype rn
I was just talking with a friend, saying this and Tie Fighter needed rereleased. can't wait for this.
Just saying, you can get TIE Fighter on GoG, complete with mission packs. But a remaster? I'd be buying that... if it wasn't AAA'd to death.
Keep up the good work guy, just keep up! I salute you!
Greetings from an old game developer ;)
Hope this turns out well. The original X-Wing and Tie Fighter games took a huge chunk of my time, in my early teens. We used to play the hell out of the floppy version X-wing with my friend, using a mouse instead of a joystick. We got pretty good at it, but our wrists were aching after a few hours of playing. Those old ball mouses were pretty heavy, and it wasn't any kind of gentle scrolling you had to do to stay on the tail of a nimble Tie Fighter or A-Wing. You really had to use the whole mouse pad real estate and lift the mouse constantly too. These games are still amazing, and the ONLY update they need is a graphical one! The game mechanics, flight model, music, atmosphere is all there. Just make it nicer looking, so that we can see which way the opponent is facing, without looking at the target camera.
Very exciting, Tie fighter was my gateway drug into both Star Wars and gaming.
Never played through X wing, looking forward to it.
I can't wait i Play this game all time i still remember how my mom yelled at me tell me to go to bed after a Friday night to Saturday night run with my brother. It was awesome.
Wow... best luck to the creators of this great project! Hope you’ll be able to include VR option... it would be mindblowing for sure 👏
X-Wing and Tie Fighter are my all-time favourite Star Wars games. Loved being able to manage energy between shields, lasers and engine power. So much more sophisticated than the crap on consoles today.
This is great news! I love X-Wing and have been yearning to replay it but my eyes just can't handle those polygons :D
X-Wing, Tie-Fighter, Alliance, all awesome games.
I can't wait for this! I have been hoping for an update for years! I still love the original x-wing and its expansions. Awesome news!
Oh yeah..... this game and the following up "Tie-Fighter" (both as Collectors Editions) are still in my Possession, and were my favorite games for a long time.... I would like to play them in a new look and graphics.... Thx for this Project.... Pls with Joystick Support..... that would be nice.... !!! Thumbs up!!!
Seriously one of the best Star Wars games ever. Lightyears ahead of its time.
I've been following their facebook for a long time, some of the models they're working on at the moment look sooooo good.
Played this for a good decade. Even with just a graphics update this will be amazing.
Looks really nice. I have tried to play the original one but have always had issue to get the controller to work. So hopefully this mod makes it easier to input right controls settings. Now we need a update for Tie Fighter (but keep the original midi music!)
Yes! Yes, Yes, Yes!!! Oh Yes!!! X-wing and even more so TIE fighter (yes I admitt I had turned to the Dark Side cause I loved buzzing around in a TIE Avenger) where my obsession back in the 90's. Oh I have so longed for someone to bring those games back. Thank you! Thank You! Thank You XWVM team!
TIE Fighter + updated with these graphics = mind blown
Wow well done
Graphics were never the problem for me. The problem for me was the lack of communication. The game never even told you if you failed your objectives or gave you any sort of guidance throughout the missions whatsoever. Whereas in TIE Fighter, you received notifications whenever you completed your primary, secondary, or bonus objectives or failed your primary objectives. And there was dialogue throughout the missions as well.
Plus, TIE Fighter let you cheat by playing the campaign with the invincibility and unlimited ammo modes on.
I broke my first joystick playing X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter in my 286 at 12.5Mhz with 1MB of RAM. In order to play with sounds and music I had to use the most minimalistic audio and mouse drivers ever. Fun days!
Looks pretty dope! this X-wing only? X-Wing vs TIE Fighter would also be amazing
It's like two different games it's just amazing what modders can achieve with passion and hard work.
Good! Now, give Xwing vs TIE Fighter an amazing remake!
I sincerely hopes this doesn't get shut down like the Studio9 Enterprise D
only if disney hears about it
Ssshhh...
very sshhhhhh
The original X-Wing has been ripe for a visual revamp forever, so stoked.
OMG THIS IS AWESOME!
This game is what brought me into the Star Wars Universe!
OMG this is amazing!!! :O Will the mod team also update X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter to the modern graphics, too? Please!
I've been wanting a remaster of these games ever since EA's disastrous Battlefront II came out, my thought was that engine with the classic X-Wing/TIE Fighter missions. I'm excited to see this when finished. I grew up playing these games, and I appreciate someone taking the time to get them the update and polish they deserve.
I spent days playing this when I was a kid. So long ago I've lost the CD! This give me a reason to buy it again and play some more :-)
Superb, one of my favourite games of that era!
I can't wait. I played this game until I saw star fields flying by when I closed my eyes to go to sleep.
I still have the original game from back then on CD...this is cool news!
I've been wanting a new X-Wing/TIE Fighter game for a long time. Shame EA wont make one. This has me super excited. I assume there is HOTAS/ Joystick support?
I fear that Disney will soon send a cease and desist letter and threaten lawsuits.
I remember playing this for hours. This is great! I hope the do the same for the rest of the games in the series!
I also hope someone makes a sequel adventure game to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Another all-time favorite!
I'd love to go through all these again, but with the option of using all the ships you could get in X-wing alliance.
Like r-41, starchasers, missile boats, the slave 2 pursuer craft etc.
Good stuff Maynard. Thanks.
Oh wow. I can remember playing that when it came out. I KNOW I've still got it somewhere in a box.
The crazy thing is whenever you cut back to the original gameplay, it's so clear how great the 1993 game still is.
I played this back in the day. It was awesome. Tie Fighter was way cool. I miss the classics.
I bought the original the day it came out back in 1993 (When release dates were not something you generally even thought about).
Never mind the VGA graphics and Adlib sound, the 17 year old me was actually there. Looks like the 42 year old me will be going back there very soon.
There are so many remakes out there...finally one I can get behind. Hope someone does Tie Fighter, next.
Well. Its about bloody time!!
Woohoo! One improvement I hope they can make is increase the top speed of the fighters. In the old game it always seemed like you crawled along at 45 mph even in the A-wings, when the fighters should be screaming past the capital ships at blistering speeds.
God, I knew saving my original copy for all those years would have some use 😌
OMFG!!! I've been waiting 20 goddamn years for this shit!
I've been waiting 20 years for a mission based starfighter sim. The last one I remember was Starlancer. After that, if there was a space sim, it was open world.
