Thank you for posting this. My mom has a 1989 Chevy Suburban that has a 700-R4 under it. I'm wanting to take the heads, intake, HEI, manual fuel pump/pump rod, and Quadrajet that's on my spare 350 from a '77 van onto it in place of it's TBI. I'm going to change the sender in the tank because I have one around and keep from having to get a fuel pressure regulator as well. This answered all my questions on making the trans work. I've got the stock TV bracket. All I need is one of those hardware store cable keeper clamp things to adjust it when I do it.
I converted my 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 because I got tired of only being able to get aftermarket crank sensors for the 5 speed transmission, that would all crap out after 2 weeks to a month. The 5.2L v8 is happy with a Carter AFB and the gas mileage is about the same as EFI but with more power. Really nice set up you got there. Nice work.
Hey really really helpful for an old farmer like who desperately wants to run from the room screaming away from engine electronics. I have an 88 gm one ton with a big block in it and this is exactly what I’m wanting to do to it. Yessir! I wish I could talk to you more because I don’t know as much as you obviously do and I have lots of questions. As I said though this has already been very helpful. Thanks so much.
of course! I’m happy to help! If you want to, I’m giving my email out, if you want to email me your phone number, I’ll give you a call and help answer questions, it’s just a lot easier than typing them out. tykar333@gmail.com
Great video. I'm about to do the same on my 87 Squarebody Suburban 454 TBI. I have a new rebuilt Qjet from Cliff Ruggles protege'. Could you give a little more detail, maybe a diagram, on how you did the relay setup for tach/choke/etc? This is exactly what I am doing too, but I'm not so proficient on relays, or where you're pulling the power from and if it's constant/key on/ ?? Thanks.
I have an 89 Chevy that had a 350 and I swapped it to a 454 big block that came out of a 93 Chevy and the transmission that was on the 89 was a turbo 400 would it affect the transmission if I carburetor swapped it because that’s what I was thinking of doing Hope to hear back from you let me know what you think
5:08 ... IMO (I know everybody has one LOL) ... ... If *I* was going to go back to EFFI after a carb swap?? ... I would 100%!! ..put the Holley Sniper 2 EFI conversion kit on!! Three sensors ONLY, handheld Computer (no car computer, no laptop, needed) AND box up the carburetor nice and careful, and keep it in the vehicle! ... Even if you have no tools, ANY Garage can swap you back to carburetor in an emergency in a no time!! .. and you KNOW it's going to run!
Question for you. I'm preparing to do this on a 1988 C1500. It's an engine swap but I'm going to eliminate the Factory FI while I'm in there. If I like the engine/Trans combo that I install, I may upgrade to something like the FiTech 600 HP FI system. My Question, So on the 700R4, you don't have a torque converter lockup at all or did the rebuild shop do something for you? I purchased the B&M kit for Torque Converter lockup controller that will work with my speedo setup. I know that you don't need it on the 700R4. but for the fuel milage and trans cooling, it's recommended. My intent for this truck is daily driver. some trailer. some RV towing, etc.
hey, go ahead and send me an email and I’ll be able to explain it further than on here, email me your phone number and I’ll give you a call. It’s just a lot easier to explain. tykar333@gmail.com
Quetion. My 89 K2500 4x4 350 has the 700R4 Trans in it. So what did you do about the throttle position sensor on the TBI unit. It appears that you are not using it on your Carb.
That hacked wiring issue is the same reason im converting mine. Im to the point where I have to start separating the wires I keep and the ones that get eliminated. It's a mess.
it’s a night and day difference, running a carburetor instead of TBI, but torque depends on the cam you put in it. but putting a carburetor on it will wake it up quite a bit.
hi I have a 1993 Cheyenne 5.7, with a 4 speed transmission, I want to install a 2 barrel motorcraft carburetor, I have a question about the pressure of the stock pump, how many psi should it have and which pressure regulator do you recommend? Greeting.
sounds like a solid build, the stock TBI pump will supply anywhere from 10-20 psi, I’m running a Holley return style regulator, they just hook up to the fuel inlet line and return line that used to go to the throttlebody. But pressure for your carburetor depends on the type, since I’m running a quadrajet, mine likes it around 5-7 psi. The Holley regulator will run you about 120 bucks or so, it’s worth every penny. I ran a Mr. Gasket regulator for about a week before the seal went out and started leaking gas all over. So I definitely recommend the Holley.
I have a 91 c2500 with a 350 and a 700r4, been having some issues with code 24, the Vehicle Speed Sensor circuit error. I've about tried everything to fix it and no luck. I'm going to switch it over to carb and disconnecting the computer. So I would need an Intake, the HEI distributor and the carb itself? I'm fairly new to all of this. Has anyone had issues with the fuel pump? and also the Torque converter solenoid kit you purchased I know that's necessary but the Speed sensor located at the tailshaft of the transmission what would I need to do to make the speedometer gauge work?
What size carb did u put on it? What other work did u do to the carb for the gas mileage? Will all the gauges and heater controls work fine when doing the conversion, since computer isn't hooked up? Nice video, I'm planning the same project. I also have a 1990 c2500 5.7 2 wheel drive silverado.
I personally love Quadrajets, you can make a lot of power out of them and get good gas mileage if you know what you’re doing. I build them all the time for people and what not. But it’s kind of your choice. It’s kind of hard to pinpoint a CFM rating on them. But from what I’ve been able to calculate, I’m at right around 750 to 800. But like I said they don’t work the same like a 750 or 800 Holley or Edelbrock. As far as the computer goes, I pretty much outlined that in the video, you’ll have to do a little bit of rewiring, but it’s not horrible. I went way overboard on mine, but that’s just how I did it. I and everything inside should work the exact same. As long as you get your grounds in the right places. I was planning on making another video because I’ve had quite a few comments along these lines.
Hey I have a 97 vortec 5.7L I put in a 96 S10 Blazer. I had the harness made for the engine from Current Performance and they flashed the ECM and per request removed the EGR junk. It has MFI currently. It appears that the 97 ECM that I had Flashed must of had Anti-Theft in it. The blazer did not. So, I have been told because of that there is no pulse from the ECM going to the ignition or fuel system to start vehicle. I am thinking of gutting all that bs and gong with carburation. Any ideas or help you can to get me through this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
yeah definitely! if your running a vortec block, you’ll need a manifold that’ll work with the heads, i’ll dig through some catalogs and see if i can get a part number. what carburetor you thinking of running?
but about the computer stuff, i wonder if you can get one out of a 96 with little to no anti-theft. 96-02ish is vortec. 95 and prior is TBI. as far as carb swapping it goes, if you want to keep the 4L60E, you’ll need to get a stand-alone controller like i said in the video. but i STRONGLY recommend pulling it, reworking it into a 700R4 (TV cable only). much easier to work with, basically eliminating all electronics. if you do that, then all you’ll be worried about is wiring for the carb and fuel pump.
Wow a guy that actually like the 4garbage quadrajet, I took that carburetor shit off my 88, nobody wants to rebuild em, can hardly find em at a decent price and they just simply lag in power. Other than using them for racing conditions carbs are garbage. But everyday driving on your regular here's and there's? Efi/tbi.. I appreciate ya letting me know you rebuild em. I'm bouta send yo shit waaaaaaay up,,, only if you be willing to take the jobs tho.🤷🏾♂️ great video by the way.
I cant seem to find the fix to get fuel pump to run can you draw a diagram with color coded example messing with the fuel pump I dont want to do the wrong thing
92 is the year been held up as nobody shows how to get pump runing safely! I dont have correct wiring diagrams so I dont know what wire runs the pump so frustrating, and dont just want to send voltage down the wrong wire LOL also a mod to trans must be done so tranny shope will do that @@westogarage

Great video and instructions man!
thanks!
I love the Q jet . They have around 800 to 850 cfm. An if they are built right and set up right they are some awesome carbs
exactly!
Im learning
What does it cfm mean?
The higher the number the more the power?

qjets are great carbs, no one knows how to tune them and it shows…
Why did you choose a needle valve vs a ball valve for your heater core?
huh?
It looks like the inlet hose to your heater core has a needle valve on it. Summertime shutoff
