  • I spent some free time engineering a few different throttle body and injector pod spacers that I had read about on forums. I wanted to test them out and see if they actually made a difference. They are both 3D printed 3DomPrints USA

    Add 14-16 psi fuel spring, headers and true duel exhaust and stage 1 chip and would get more for your money, great video and tests

      Hi, I have a 1994 3/4 4×4 7.4 liter , all original including brakes. This thing burns gas, too much! The breaking is inadiquate and the book in the tire section says to not exceed 120 kms. That is about 65 mph. I live in Alberta, between Calgary and Edmonton people are rolling 130. I am using about 8 to10 miles per gallon. The distance is 185 miles. I haven't driven it any distance and have a small car to go on that trip, because of costs. However I am going to need my knees replaced and the car won't work. So the pickup has to be modified. Do you have parts numbers for the chip or any other parts listing I could use to get the truck to be a little safer and cheaper to run.

      None of that will matter. The bottle neck of TBI engines is the restrictive heads.

    What I noted with these spacers, the throttle body sitting higher, the throttle, cruise control and transmission cables had to be raised a ½ inch. Two half-inch spacers were added with longer bolts for the bracket that holds the cables. I never had seen anyone who has had to do this.

      What do you mean youve never seen someone who had to do it? You just listed a few things that had to be done to compensate then stated they never had to be done

    People seem to forget how much engine temperatures have on tbi's. Got a bad temp sensor on the intake, it'll flood the engine. You can actually control the afr's by changing the thermostat

    I had a signifigant WOT power gain using a 1" open center spacer, 454 TBI unit and 454 air cleaner that uses power bowl rather than that spacer that shrouds the TBI inlet. I had a 3704 manifold bored to 2" at the time.

  • @etmesi
    @etmesi 9 місяців тому +3

    I did this, not certain if the OEM air cleaner will fit under the hood but I had two new fuel injectors saved from 2015 I don;t remember buying so strange. But my truck acts like 100 more horsepower, might not be just because of the spacers alone the fact it may have had wrong injectors for a 350, Firestone put in one used fuel injector, who knows if it was for a 454 big block I have no clue. But it paid to install these spacers.

    Shave the risers around the injectors there are other things you can do to the tbi housing to make it flow better. Advance 9deg will help you as well

    I don't know if the throttle body spacer does anything for air flow, but what I did discover is that it pulls the throttle cable back through the fire wall, thus giving you more throttle response at a mechanical level.

    Wouldn't the computers adjust the air/fuel mixture once it determines there's "too much air"? Or are these older trucks able to be modified in this way without a tune?

    • @rustyroadtrips
      @rustyroadtrips  3 місяці тому +3

      The computer has the ability to adjust long term and short term fuel trim. This particular modification helps reduce a choke point for the air that is before the valves. Therefore, we are not increasing the maximum amount of air available in the cylinder but when that maximum amount of air is available. The fuel trims will compensate for this but with any engine, maximum performance cannot be achieved without some kind of tuning. I appreciate the questions!

    what kind of filament did you use. assuming you used pla? if so and your printer can get hot enough try abs instead of pla the glass transition temp is much higher. you could also look into nylon filaments. especially if you plan to use it long term. love to see 3d printing in automotive applications

    • @rustyroadtrips
      @rustyroadtrips  11 днів тому

      The filament is PLA. I have been working with Nylon filaments over the past few months but they are a little more difficult to print. I appreciate your input!

    Why did you install the spacer on the new tbi, then do the test? That ruined the test did it not? How do you know there was any improvement?

    • @rustyroadtrips
      @rustyroadtrips  3 місяці тому

      The point of this test was mainly to see what affect the spacer had. Adding the new TBI was something I wanted to do because I had a rebuilt one laying around. I have done CFD on the intake assembly with and without the spacer installed and it does make a difference. The difference will not make this engine produce loads of power but the spacers are a cheap upgrade. Thanks for the feedback!

    • @celloprof
      @celloprof 3 місяці тому +1

      @@rustyroadtrips yeah people have much different views on the subject. One guy has a spacer that goes below it, not above, he claimed it did nothing after a dyno test, but his had only 166 HP... Some did say it depends on the upgrades. my g20van stock supposedly has 210hp 300ft-lb of torque. mine has a added 3"exhaust and a k&n air filter which made a huge difference.

    Do you have to readjust the TV cable and the other linkages if you put a TBI spacer on? In theory could you just stack up a few injector pod gaskets and get the same height as the aftermarket spacer?

    • @rustyroadtrips
      @rustyroadtrips  10 місяців тому +1

      I did not get to test the Throttle Body Spacer as it melted. I have some new designs and materials that I am working with and hopefully will be able to test a prototype soon. I would imagine that the TV cable would need to be adjusted but idk about the throttle cable. In theory with enough gaskets you can space the injector pod up, but I think you would end up spending the same amount of money as the the aftermarket unless you have extra gaskets. Thanks for the comment!

    @rusty, I have a '94 3/4 ton GMC Suburban with a 454. Would this Injector spacer give any help to my setup (original engine and tranny) but still keep it a towing beast?

      The 454 TBI has a 1/4 tall phenolic injector spacer from the factory. It also does not have the ridges on the TBI assembly.

      I just recently finished a few prototype 454 TBI injector pod spacers. They are 3/8" thick and will be available on my ebay store soon!

      @@rustyroadtrips That could definitely help on a 2" bore or larger TBI. The only TBI based engine I still own has the Edelbrock TBI to MPFI single plane intake and the TBI injectors with pod get removed entirely. It is on an aluminum headed 406 with 29 lb/hr injectors. Makes 150 HP more than the factory 320 hp 350 made. That TBI 350 was rather nice for a stock TBI engine. It had a 2" bore TBI, 46 lb/hr high pressure injectors with the 30 psi regulator good for ~ 80 lb/hr, GM 113 L98 aluminum heads and a GM 6395 roller cam. 50+ mph across the water turning 5,200 rpm. The 406 runs closer to 65 mph turning a lot more prop.

    There’s a reason they make those spacers with aluminum and not plastic. 😉
    I would use a spacer on these tbi engines for the mpg gain, you’re not really going to get much in the way of power on these.
    You can buy an aluminum spacers with all the hardware and gaskets for like $40.

      With the aluminum spacer on the bottom works good and putting the injectors up higher works good and it dose help with horse power some there's a little difference

      Normally they use a phenolic plastic. It is heat resistant, and does not transfer heat like aluminum does.
