  • Brake pads consist of a backing plate and friction material. It is the friction material that comes into contact with the brake disc. Overtime the friction material wears down and your brakes become less effective at stopping your vehicle. The manufacturer of your vehicle will specify a minimum thickness of the friction material before the brake pads need to be replaced.

Useful video. In addition to glasses when wire brushing, cleaning/wiping gloves to remove oily residues before handling the new brake disks / pads is also a good idea.

Liked it, it was very informative, not sure if my motor a 2004 plate honda civic has the same rear set up and needs the wind back tool or not, possibly it does, a bit more clarity on how the wind back tool is used would help.
Possibly a bit OTT from me but a dust mask while using the wire brush to clean off old break dust might help the lungs if you do this a lot.
All in all I learned a lot thanks

Where do my get my pianist from, can I have someone use a keyboard to play the tune when I change the brakes, or will that not work?

I used an old tap with a big washer to wind back the calliper.

When I reassemble these parts, I always apply a very thin smear of grease to all the screw-threads, the faces and the heads of the nuts. It stops what's called "gauling" (thread damage). Remember, in a couple of years you may need to do this job again, so this will help you get the screws undone without damage. Use your common sense and don't get grease on the discs.

It was advised on another video to use tread tightening to avoid loosening later, which makes sense. Can you use grease as you suggested as well?

@@dotmanmide The point I'm making is trying to stop the threads rusting (fusing) together over time. Thread compound can do that too but make sure you get some on the bolt faces too.

They do it so you go change you discs every time and than . Brake discs are stronger than you thing no need to change when the manufacturer says

Excuse me, look at those discs and how tight those pads were in the carriers and tell me again that they don't need replacing at all.

Wd40 will destroy rubber. Brake cleaner should be used on brakes dummy
