Avishai Cohen Trio live | Leverkusener Jazztage 2021 | Jazzline
- Besetzung
Avishai Cohen - bass, vocals
Elchin Shirinov - piano
Roni Kaspi - drums

Yessss.
The way Elchin Shinirov plays the piano in this consert is different to almost all pianists in jazz history. Normally we are used to pianists taking place, trying to make their solos to be some sort of the center of the show, so to say. But no, Elchin is disciplined, he knows what it is all about, he plays his part in the most distinguished way, and therefore I love his playing.
Did they change pianist? And if so why?
@@John.Christopher I am not really familiar with the history of Avishai Cohen Trio, so I have no answer....
they change often. elchin is greater than roni
I love the way Roni Kaspi blends in the music ..GREAT MUSIC, MUSICIANS, AND FEEL. Bravo !
Yes, she is the unknown relative that comes to this party, then find herself to be the princess of all tribute.
@petroschoremis149 @@staffanolofsson8201 I don't get the hype personally. Her first solo was not special, maybe it's the song structure. Mark Guiliana would do way more with that kind of groove.
i feel like Elchin's solo's before her first were way more narrating. probably cuz she'd been unannounced up until then, she went a bit in a haze chopping up the groove & feel of the song. Eckhin's solo immeaditely after that is again way more fitting
in my honest opinion of seeing cohen a few times , at least a change of pocket would have been welcome
Drummer absolutely kills it!!! What a beast!
This was my very first impression.
@@varkony60 in my honest opinion immaculate discipline yes, but of seeing cohen a few times , at least a change of pocket would have been welcome in her solo's, a few smiles and listens to how the others approach a song skeleton
That drummer chick is out of this world!! Amazing drumming sister!!!
have you seen how during her fist solo, probably cuz she'd been unannounced up until then, she went a bit in a haze chopping up the groove & feel of the song? Eclhin's solo immeaditely after that is again, as his solos before that, way more fitting
in my honest opinion of seeing cohen a few times , at least a change of pocket would have been welcome
Roni Kaspi is absolutely an “outlier”. She is a very superior artist! So young and so bright! It almost feels like he's been playing for 50 years. She was born sitting on a drum... It's a great pleasure to hear her play - even more so in the company of "monsters" of the quality and importance of Avishai and
Elchin. Thank you very much!
Paulo de Tarso Riccordi, Brasil.
i was at the concert and Roni just blew everyones mind during her solo on seven seas. you wanted to cheer, give her props or something like that, but you could'nt. she just freezed everyone in a trance. never experienced something like that. that was spiritual!
I don't get the hype personally. Her first solo was not special, maybe it's the song structure. Mark Guiliana would do way better, if i remember
This is a formidable concert, one of the best jazz conserts I ever heard. No need for more words.
Same for me !
@@0Matt0 Knäböj! (in Swedish 🧎) "fall down on my knees"
I am speechless every time 😱❤️
@@mymusic-321 Not only jazz and classical music. All sorts of music, if ir is good🤩
Avishai Cohen live at the blue note way surpasses this.
The sound engineer did a superb job! ❤️
Agreed, but in jazz with only three instruments this is not so hard to do.
@@staffanolofsson8201 I have to politely disagree! :-) But I understand that it might seem so. Compare this to the last Avishai concert uploaded here two month ago for example.
@@xcy0n I must confess that I have no real insight in this. I just imagine that it is more easy to record a jazz trio than a full orchstra in a hall, or a loneny guitar in a church concerning all the sound reflexes. Best wishes!
@@staffanolofsson8201 Easy to do is ignorant BS. Sorry.
By far the best recording of Avishai’s concert. Just look at the microphones arrangement in comparison to other recent live recordings. The sound engineers @ WDR did a state of the art job and their professionalism will echo for generations.
The first composition is a pure masterpiece. Brings me to tears every time the bass solo culminates.
Roniiiii! Oh lord! You've reached! So proud of you! ❤🙏🏼❤🙏🏼🤩
One year since I first listened to this. It still has the grip on me, maybe even more, as I now learned all the details. Still one of the best jazz conserts I´ve heard. So lucky this is always available on UA-cam.
What a trio! We’ve waited for so long for such a powerful trio that spins along Jarrett or Mehldau offerings. Pianist Shirinow displays perfect knowledge of the Jarrett and Mehldau idiom and In the second piece I hear Lyle Mays reincarnating, building his solo from silence to a continuous gradation, reminding pieces like Half Life of Absolution. And: Shirinov doesn’t come as epigone but as a complex thinker in its own right, providing of excellent technique in order to produce flow and a Trip factor in his soloing. The whole trio acts perfectly homogenous in timing and phraseology. This trio is a bliss!
Thank you for your comment! I totally agree.
Also EST, Esbjörn Svensson Trio, has to be mentioned. This swedish trio that made a new way for how a piano, a base and a drum can cooperate.
It’s not Jarrett, it’s not Mehldau, it’s simply another thing come from nowhere … dans la nature rien ne se perd, rien ne se cree, tout se transforme …
@@staffanolofsson8201 Yes!
Brilliant analysis
🇹🇹UA-cam algorithm must be fed up of me playing this…
I question if they are people? They are so simple. To play that level of music without a script and from memory is extremely extraordinary!
The bassist; the pianist; the drummer…oh my goodness!!!
May Almighty God bless their soul and give them long life to continue to make us happy with their soul soothing music…Woooow!!! 🇹🇹
And ohhh…we sometimes forget the hidden guys; epic sound engineering and camera work!!! 👏👏👏
Wow, great show. I've been a fan of Avishai for some time. And pianist Shirinov plays beautifully as well. But holy mother of gawd .... the standout for me was Roni Kaspi. Incredibly musical and she has it all. Dynamics, feel, musical and empathetic to what Cohen and Shirinov were playing , and yes chops. But she plays for the music. When she soloed on Seven Seas she absolutely knocked it out of the park. Blew my frickin' mind.
No kidding! Agree wholeheartedly.
in her seven seas solo yes, in other songs.... ? have you seen her destroy some of the songs?@@TheRealShrike
Probably the best jazz trio concert I've heard so far. What a performance, absolutely brillant, thank you
Man, Avishai Cohen not only do I love your music I think it's so wonderful, like Mile Davis you bring new musicians into a world I know they want and train to be in. The latest I've seen is the drummer Roni Kaspi. Great performance. I listened over and over and believe it or not I learned something. Great performance by all.
Same here!
This ensemble is so good !
I've been listening to this video for weeks every day

Bro thx for ev4ryth1ng love from montenegro hell yeaaah
I've been watching it every day for a year, every sound is already etched in my brain.
I've come across this by accident. A jazz fan going back to the 60s I'm no doubt guilty of not being as open as I should be to what came after the '60 but this reminds me that jazz is alive and well and evolving in the 21st century. Also nice to see a trio where all three are wonderful - like a solid 3 legged stool. And as someone says below, fine recording. Bravo.
This is funny - I was just reading this and about to add a reply to say that I agree with this completely and then I realized I myself wrote this comment.
@@tedpolhemus6111 😄😁🤣
Oh My Goodness, the greatest trio EVER! 🥰
❤
Phantastic music, awesome band: Roni's playing from 41:00 is the most beautiful drum solo I have ever seen / listened to anywhere ....
boah . wirklich super solo integral.
I hop UA-cam doesn't bann me as I'm listening this solo over and over again.
Love the ideas in the tonality. They were all wonderful, but that drummer really blew me away. Very complex and different ideas and patterns. It made me live in that world for a while and I liked the visit!
Oh yes, totally agree. This is absolutely great. I'm in love with Roni too.
i'd say repetitive patterns. I liked the first 3 songs
These people and this music are from another planet. If I had been there in the audience, I probably would have lost my mind. The drummer, you're a cosmos. There's no words on earth that can describe your talent and the talent of all these guys
great pianist Elchin Shirinov!!
Yes, and a somewhat different jazzpianist. He doesnt smears his notes all over the piano.
Jazz is the healer 💜☮️💜
Some of you mentioned a resemblence with Brad Meldau and Keith Jarrett. I also want to point out the resemblence with the Swedish Group Esbjörn Svensson Trio, EST, me myself a swede. Esbjörn that tragically died in a diving accident some years ago...Bless his soul.
Yes, so sad to lose Esbjorn. I had just discovered EST and looked them up only to find he had died....what a loss!
It's like esbjorn and Tigran Hamasyan had a love-child
Much love and appreciation to master Esbjörn and the great tradition of Scandinavian jazz. I distinctly remember when I "discovered" EST's Seven Days of Falling in my uncle's music library years ago; it felt like something I had always been waiting to hear without knowing it.
The resemblance is more than superficial. Both wonderful trios.
Wow, I didn’t know that.😮 Great musician. 🙏🏽
what a trio!!!!! a glorious piano player, incredible drummer, and the wonderful Avishai!!

Avishai Cohen Trio: Shifting Sands review - exhilarating, incandescent jazz
Since his emergence in Chick Corea’s trio in 1997, the Israeli-born double bassist Avishai Cohen has become a global star for his bass sound that joins cello-like purity to percussive drama, and for original compositions embracing American jazz, Latin music, Sephardic-Jewish folk song, avant-funk, orchestral works, even pop-tinged vocals. 40:09

What a Trio. This is the quintessence of this genre.I am hooked.
Great. Love and respect from Baku, Azerbaijan.
I think Elchin Sirinov is about the best jazz pianist that I might’ve ever heard. Absolutely marvelous job. Love it! Congratulations from Baku 👍👍
Indeed he is but you may want to listen to Herbie Hancock, Lyle Mays, Keith Jarrett, Oscar Peterson, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck just to name a few
@@DenisChampagne2212 and Chick... but in this trio, playing these songs, this Elchin guy is as good as you can be IMO.
Avishai Cohen ... juste merci
Superb, Thank You. Roni Kaspi 🥁❤️
Wondrous, exhilarating, joyous and intense.
I am having pleasure once again listening to this with "awe." Blooming with forms of instrument notes interweaving, smoothe and flowing. Thank you, love from America. ❤️
Thank you Anna Magnani (she was amazing!) At least we are two persons loving this music with total respect. Love from Sweden with total respect.
What an extraordinary concert of three genious master-musicians, also this phenomenal sound! One of the best concert-recordings I've ever heard in my life. God bless you all! Love & peace on earth ...!
after watching this 100 times cause its just perfection all around but that trio is above the cut
Three of the most beautiful people brought together by fate. Thank you FATE!
What a magnificent concert!
i haven't got time right now to listen to the whole concert, but i gotta say the sound is amazing. What a recording!!!!
You and your trio have restored my faith in music. wow!
I’m in awe
GREAT ! SINCRONIZATION , MIXING, RITHM, CORDS,
EVERYTHING IS WONDERFULL
an unbelievable and emotional concert, thank you, Avishai Cohen and your group.
Merci.
This grip followed up my morning gig of Jazz Sabbath, and I’m glad that I let the transition play…this is really nice!

Really great! the Drummer too! Amazing!
Amazing musicians and concert. Congrats ❤
26:27 Anybody who has jammed with good people knows exactly what he’s feeling. Glorious!
3 songs put together at the same time and they fit well sometimes, and that cool.
This is more can hear than words.
Maravilloso! Gracias!
Never heard of this trio before. First composition sounds like a piece by Chopin or Debussy. Very fresh and some new material to listen to. Great stuff thanks.
This sound make me feel sad but good to come down to so delicate sensitive hearter
very emotional and good music for me
And deep
@@user-qo4df2mf1y Yes this is music that will not abandon anyone listening careful to this....
absolutely amazing ! 🙌
Conquered at the first two notes, indeed a discovery. Thank you and welcome!
Avishai... kindly honour and acknowledge the incredible and unique gift of Roni after each piece, as well as of Elchin's
so strong....thanks
Beautiful ❤
Es ist ein genialer Hörgenuss!
It seems as Roni Kaspi on drums has complete control over this. (more words, I admit!)
C'est stupéfiant ! Un final de fou!
As I see it: "Below" at 14:47 is Jazz´s answer on theraphy. Never have I heard such a smooth answer of the question of who we are and what we are aimed for. As the lover of jazz music I am, I am now tempted to call this group "The Jazz Doctors that invites you to lay on their sofa". Guess if I want to lay on this sofa.
Damn perfect concert...just great music fantastically played, and not a single word. Thanks
Have you noticed Roni Kaspis playing in "Shifting Sand" at 29:36? Not the easiest thing to do. But she fits in completely, if you ask me, and so she is a well integrated member of this group.
I start to enjoy from Jazz from your music.
Thank you
Ronen Bokovza
absolutely brilliant performance of all musicians....pure bliss for a jazz lover like me....gives ne goose bumps all time
Its so beautiful. I love it.
The three of them really hit it off. It would be nice to see more recordings from this trio! This is one of my favorite videos too.
Roni Kaspi Chapeau!
This is the most amazing thing i ever seen.....this is crazy good
Thank you
Best performance I've ever seen in my life.
Bravissimi questi affiatati Musicisti +++☆♧◇♤♡
Quel bonheur, quel tranquillité d esprit.
Kaspi , énorme ! ! ! , Shirinov , magnifique ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Genial & Wonderful!❤ It speaks to my soul, thank you
I am very impressed by this style of jazz. I am delighted with it.good job
Well put!
That was too awesome
Brilliant performance!
