It is not what you say, it is the way you say it. This phrase sums up what could be seen as one creed of jazz, the kind of music establishing the much cited “own sound” as the measure of all things. Those who do not possess it are threatened by drowning in the anonymity of insignificance.
Ben Webster’s unique sound earned him his nickname “The Brute and The Beautiful”, a coarse, hard and guttural sound in more rapid tempos, a warmer, softer, sometimes lightly whispered sound in ballads (it is only mentioned as a side note that Webster’s moniker “The Brute and The Beautiful” reflected his Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde personality. He could be the incarnation of kindness only to be transformed into a ticking time bomb by the demon alcohol).
Oscar Peterson none the less belonged to a group of individualists one could recognize in mere seconds. It would be pointless to mention this if the pianist would not be reduced in a hurry to his breath taking technique over and over again (comparable only to that of an Art Tatum or a Martial Solal). However, the fiery was just one of the Canadian heavy-weight’s sides. Cast into the shade by his own virtuosity was Peterson the poet.
Both North Americans knew each other well. At the very beginning of the 50’s Norman Granz had integrated them in his JATP all-star package, and afterwards they cooperated in the studio more than once. Their interaction profited not least by the fact that Webster not only knew Peterson well but piano playing in general. He had made a name for himself as a pianist at the beginning of his career and above all, mastered the art of the stride piano.
Presenting this pair twenty years after their first encounter promised an evening of swinging acoustic mainstream out of the extraordinary - and still in a decade “where the world had gone electric” and rock jazz was on the brink to experience his heyday. (It is among the achievements of public broadcasting to not only record forms beyond mainstream but also those that were not en vogue at a certain time or in line with the contemporary zeitgeist. In this regard, the NDR Jazz Workshop which was introduced in 1958 was and is a shining example up to this day.)
At the 84th NDR Jazz Workshop at the Funkhaus Hannover Webster and Peterson made a guest performance together with a rhythm section that met the high expectations. Niels-
Henning Ørsted Pedersen had just been called into the pianist’s trio, one the very few bass players that could technically match him. At that point Webster had already played more often with NHØP, because he had moved to Copenhagen in the mid-Sixties. As a drummer they had taken on Tony Inzalaco (the only living musician of this quartet today) who was already working in Germany at that time - among others with the Kenny Clarke/ Francy Boland Big Band, the orchestra of Kurt Edelhagen and the NDR Bigband.
The repertoire showed “both sides” of Webster as well as Peterson (including two titles by the tenor saxophonist and four by his former employer Duke Ellington, among them “Cotton Tail”, a piece that the Duke had written in 1940 as a special feature for Webster).
The CD and the DVD are a pure delight for ears and eyes, not least because of the excellent sound quality and the sensitive camera work. It also is a historical document: the last clash of Peterson and Webster who died in Amsterdam a few months after the concert in Hannover.

A jazz fan since 1952, I've seen the world of jazz wax and wane...and I saw it coming..and I'm prepared with many CDs and 1000 vinyl LP.'s..and even some Compact Cassettes!...and a jazz book collection to be envied. Jazz may slip into the past but not in my house. Today's music is for today's people and rightly so....I find endless joy and satisfaction with what I have. Here you have two giants of jazz, peerless in their playing; listen and enjoy!
In case you're interested....every Sat. morning to noon, there's a jazz show on the web. Been going since 1985 on WCDB-/fm, now doing internet too. Great old classics and new artists. Jazz greats celebrated on their birthdays makes for great listening. Bill McCann plays wonderful music. Replayed Sun. 10-2
@@jamesf1525 Thanks for the nod. Your reply shows the power of these Comments...I knew nothing of WCDB.......now I do.... cheers.
Yes man, that kind of music is a real source of joy which I dont want miss in my now older years
Как точно Вы сказали о своей доме, в котором всегда БУДЕТ ДЖАЗ! В моëм доме всегда звучит красивая музыка! И, конечно, ДЖАЗ!!!
I wish you and I could enjoy an evening of looking through those albums and sharing the joy of a better life through the best music. ….Tom
Epic ! In 2024 too ! I'm 70 yo.and I keep coming back to it .Thanks. ❤
І мені сподобалось надзвичайно ! слухаю вперше. Мені 45.. Хай буде мир у світі, музика і любов. Ні клятим війнам!🌿
im 27 years old form C country. good to kewn u
Yes, Good memories; The Brute was Great... So glad I had a chance to see him...
Doesn't get any better than this: a great cup of coffee, free time and a set by masters.
This is the kind of jazz I discovered in the 5O's and 60's. Absolutely great that it has a place on UA-cam.
Man, to watch the joy on Oscar's face when the jam gets swingin' hard, or when Ben rips a hot chorus!! What a gift to us all.
My mom listened to Oscar Peterson & more, when i was a kid, in the 1950's; i became a fan & lifelong jazz-fusion player. Oscar is a favorite!
the joy and beauty, the spirit on Oscars face and flowing into his hands producing music so unimaginable and heavenly. Thank you Oscar and may your soul continue to bring forth this beauty in the worlds beyond.
God has graciously resigned and let Oscar take over.
@@Usefulmusic he probably "sits in" sometimes though!
This was my grandad's sound. I'm here and loving it too.
This Jazz was and is foundational...based in The Blues...so it always lives on. What a great ERA for The Oscar Peterson Trio in Europe with the fantastic Niels on upright acoustic bass for many years and the cat on drums is excellent, too. Great period for Ben Webster and for joining Oscar and Company....so great to see the joy of performing shared by all the players, especially Oscar and Ben. As a former sometimes semi-pro musician I can assure everyone that this level of performance SYNERGY is rare...so difficult to attain. Magnificent! Thank you so much Jazz and Blues Experience for researching, preserving and presenting this excellent music! Bravo!
THANK YOU for NO stupid Ads interfering with this performance!!!
There aren't enough words to describe the beauty of this music.
Worlds greatest trio, EVER with the great Ben Webster- wonderful
Wow! I struck gold when I found myself here!!! Never heard of these great musicians. Thank you for this!!
Hope you have been able to do more digging to find out more!
Whole world of this kind of jazz out there; happy listening!
Oscar Peterson and Ben Webster!!! That's what I'm talking about!!! Both of them left that heavenly music here for us to enjoy. That's the cut!!!!
they dont come better than this, how beautiful . how lucky i am to hear such beautiful soulful music ,
Oscar and NHOP, what a combo. We were lucky enough to see them in NYC in what was likely one of the last stands Oscar had. He moved so slowly on his feet, but when his fingers got busy, you forgot that.
Thank you for posting. Oscar Peterson, and Ben Webster. and Drum and bass Live,Jazz and Blues Concert they were off the hook!!!
This cosmic stuff comes from them to us more naturally than sweat and goose bumps !
Masters at work! I can’t believe it yet !!! Wornderful in every way. The video and the sound. In the morning or in the night, loud or not, just right. So much passion in a band!!!
one of the most incredible jazz concert I have ever heard. Idols!!! Also the bass player ... with a sustain out of immagination!!! Superamazing. This is jazz!
Too bad people today don't hear fhe beautiful sound of Oscar Peterson's quartet!
I was so fortunate to see and hear Ben and Oscar when I was a young musician. I heard Oscar do his magic as in the warm-up group before an Ella Fitzgerald concert in Belfast, and then enjoyed Ben when he performed at Ronnie Scott's in London in 1964. Gracious music from gracious men.
The drummer is so chill. Fabulous group. Thanks for posting.
Well who is he?
Tony Inzalaco
Never enough words to express what Jazz is, does, and brings to our humanity. Fun and deep all at the same time and 50 years on still has it!
my introduction to jazz by my late dad at 9yrs old...the late great oscar peterson.im now 57 in 2024 and still crazy and passionate over jazz music...definately the best music ever, its simply magical and suits my any and every mood....yes thats jazz and i love it
this just sounds like you described me . more or less the same age and situation .. salute to our dads for introducing us to the right kind of music .. Webster, Peterson, the Duke, Bruebeck .. one of a kind .. forever
Oscar Peterson was the best jazz pianist for his entire life. RIP Oscar. There's still
an empty bench at the top.
Some jazz giant, maybe Duke Ellington, said jazz just keeps evolving and will go on forever. I love you madly!
Legends. My favourite piano player. My favourite sax player. It doesn’t get better than this.
This trio is having the most intimate conversation with Divine Source - completely sublime.🌠
This is what happened to me today, I was walking down the hall in the building that I live in with this Oscar Peterson & Ben Webster playing on my phone and there were some young ladies walking down the hall and heard the music and asked me what I was listening to and I told them who it was and one said that's the kind of music that her dad listens to.And I told her that means that your dad got some class and that you'd do well to follow his example so you won't wind up getting hooked up with some Pookie and Ray Ray type of guys. They actually dug the music, though.
OFC they liked it...who in their right mind would NOT ??!!!!
Believe me bro, there are some folks who actually aren't in their right mind and will tell you that that kind of music is old. And I say, this music ain't old, it's still here.
That's the reason why so many of these young women get hooked up with these Pookie and Ray Ray guys because they don't listen to this kind of music. They'd rather listen to rap or rock. Apparently you don't live in the hood.
@@ArthurHolloway-hr5zt Oh...but some is "old" and sophisticated like fine aged wine !
I'm definitely with you on that!!! I just pray that these youngsters will grow and appreciate this music.
Wonderful Jazz, Ben Webster king of Tenor Saxophone, thanks for sharing.😎
What a treat! I'm a longtime fan of both Oscar Peterson & Ben Webster, so, thank you for posting this video!
Been listening to this nonstop for the past three days. I'm a writer, and this has become my go-to music for when I need to disappear inside my head. Absolutely wonderful.
Ben and Oscar complimented by Europe's finest rhythm section are an organic presence on stage and in the studio. Ben plays with his deep dynamic and Oscar is one with all the piano can offer. This video is such a treat. A treasure for what jazz sounds like under the auspices of four masters.
Masters all and timeless,I wish those who have departed were still around, beautiful.
Ben Webster had soul.
Dad would have loved this so much. Mind tou, I love it too.
Ben Webster & Oscar Peterson, it doesn't get any better than this!!!!
2024 still the best.. simply fantastic.. straight ahead swinging.. great bass player world knowed,, Tony Inzalaco fantastic Ben Webster are you kidding me.. Oscar Peterson nooooo one better... this folks is music..😊

Wonderful!
I was digging these cats in the 50s at age 8 along with Sinatra, Cole & Bennett, etc... & Basie, Ben Webster & Ellington & Billy Strayhorn in Los Angeles.
What a pleasure to listen to these two best musicians together, I'm a fan de Oscar Peterson and Ben Webster, and the other two bass and drums are not unworthy !! 🤩🙏❤️🎶🎹🎷🥁🎻🎶❤️👌😌😇😇🤗 Congratulations and thank you so much, Jazz and Blues Experience for this exquisite hour. 😍🌹❤️😍🌹❤️😍🌹❤️😍🌹❤️😍🌹❤️🌹🌹🌹💐🌹🌹🌹💐🌹🌹🌹💐🌹🌹🌹💐🌹🌹🌹💐🌹🌹🌹💐🌹🌹🌹💐🌹🌹🌹💐🌹🌹🌹💐🙋♀️🇲🇫🫂🫶

GREAT! GREAT!!! UNE VIDEO ONTOLOGIQUE ET HISTORIQUE!!! MAINTENANT ILS SONT DES COMÈTES QUI PASSENT DANS NOTRE CIEL, SOURIANT DE NOTRE TRAGÉDIE...!!!
Stylishly put, the french way ..
And on bass Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen.
Don't forget☝️😊
NHØP was as lengendary as Ben and Oscar ❤
My fellow Dane. When I was 16 I went to boarding school for summer. Niels Henning's dad was the headmaster. Niels Henning although only 15 was playing at a club in Copenhagen (the school was 25 miles south of Copenhagen). Love both Niels Henning, Ben Webster and Oscar. I saw Niels Henning several times when he played with Dexter Gorden in Club Montmatre in Copenhagen
Ya' mean, "Always Remember Niels"! Absolutely...he was terrific...really bonded the Oscar Peterson Trio during this era and an excellent soloist !!
love this kind of jazz
All I have to say is: Thank you! From România with ❤❤❤
Magical keys producing heavenly clashes and splashes of colors all in jolly perfect time! Can't help but wiggle to this.
Das es solch tolle Musik und dann noch auf Video gibt: Fantastisch! Bild und Sound sind´s ebenso.
Grateful appreciation, thank you!
Sooooo good. Webster always reminded me of a blues singer with a raspy-gritty voice. He sure could project his personality through that horn. Damn good drummer there too. And of course, Peterson and NHOP always deliver the swing better than any. Great post here. :-)
Absolutely...well said!
The last minute or so of "I Got It Bad And That Ain’t Good" is like medicine for my soul.
It makes me feel good to here these guys the best
Encontrar esta maravilla Musical para terminar el año 🎉 Gracias!!!

1972...... Ben's started his last year on this earth....strange idea seeing him here and realising this.
What a great man ! ❤
I've seen Oscar live (Sydney, 1978). Real music for real people.
thank you i like it
Simply wonderful
Escucharlos por separado es un placer inmenso; escucharlos juntos me erizo la piel.
Wow!... This is amazing!..♥
My a few years old kids know how to dance hearing this music .
Little kids are compelled to move if music's good; they're not inhibited. If it's not good, they won't move..
Great Show!
BRAVO!!!
What a piano playing!
Thanks so much for posting! I've seen so little footage of Ben, and he and Oscar are just as good as it gets! NHOP too of course!
