"There is no wit, no charm, just filler bullshit until you arrive at the story the developers wanted to tell....about anime characters hitting each other" Quite possibly the greatest thing Dunkey has ever said.
I tried. I really tried. I tried tried and triiiieeed. I read everything; every note, data entry and piece of dialog, trying to memorize it all. I thought I was understanding the story... the evil and not-so-evil groups... the clones and the data stuff... I thought I understood it all. But then came the line... "I'm the Ansem from an alternate universe." I threw my controller down.
I honestly don’t get it. I’m a big fan and I’ve never felt confused about the story (except for Dream Drop Distance) and I always understood everything just fine. I was even a dumb kid when I first played 2 where people claim the plot gets more complex and skipped Chain of Memories (a big mistake people make) and I still understood stuff just fine.
Damn. I’ve been away from KH for a while, and I’ve really enjoyed the gameplay do them. I know the story has always been corny and bad, with horrendous dialogue, but I genuinely like the gameplay. Last month I bought the games I hadn’t played. I’m finishing 358/2 days, and plan of finishing DDD (I fucking hate it so far. Gameplay is ass), 2.8 (I honestly love the gameplay) and then play 3. Should I even bother playing 3? Is it really that bad or was the gameplay enjoyable at least
Don’t worry, After KH4 comes out with the boss baby world, we will finally understand what the secret ending of KH3 meant. We might even get a glimpse at KH5 the phantom pain, staring Sora’s new nobody, punished liquid Sora.
Years passed and i am still pissed about kh3. It feels that it has no heartfelt moments with disney characters instead they just act as check boxes. The toy story and monster e co world were such example of these and it disappointed me so much. The winnie the pooh world was left as a minigame world meanwhile back in the days simply Sora interacting with Pooh would made your heart melt. Don t get me wrong, it IS BEAUTIFUL VISUALLY and is fluid gameplay wise but simply there were no emotional attachments with the disney characters cause they didn't exist or had no personality.
Wow Dunkeys being WAAAAAY too harsh. You can tell he clearly didn’t even unlock all the worlds. Once you collect all 300 crabs in pirates of the Caribbean then you unlock a new page to the Winnie the poo world that directly ties into the book from the beginning of Shrek and allows you to unlock the Dreamworks levels. It takes a while but the whole story starts to make sense when you get to Shark Tale world.
I've been a huge fan of kingdom hearts since the beginning, and maybe it's just because I grew up but this game was such an incomprehensible mess of contrivances and half hearted story telling that it genuinely made me sad
The story started pretty nice and simple, you were just a kid trying to find your friends. But after the sequel (the one from the GBA) the darkness and heart stuff got on crack...
You didn't even mention the fact that half of the most charismatic characters don't say a word because they couldn't get the VAs for them so instead they just awkwardly stand there.
TheGallantRayku That doesn't explain the others who weren't voiced. Such as Auleus and Dilan. There are other ways to bring up Phil without lettting him show up and say nothing. There is no excuse for Bad writing.
@@someguy9970 I can’t really think of any plot holes in the story but yeah they really went out of their way to make it as confusing to learn as possible
And not only that, but it has some legitimate lessons you can take away from the games like how life doesn't get easier, but you get better. Or how failure can be a tool to growth if you don't give up. Kingdom Hearts is literally just convoluted for the sake of being convoluted, which is one of the WORST things a story can be. Also, Elden Ring is gonna be awesome.
Rest of the video aside, that montage at the beginning set to that simple and clean remix is really good editing by Dunk! A nice tribute to the past decade of video games, and you have to admit even if the games aren't your thing that song is really hype

I was so freaking pumped for when this game was going to release. I remember waiting years and years for it to come out and bought it first day only to not even be able to stomach it for more than a few hours. I wasn't sure if I just got older and the dialogue felt more awful than I could remember but this was definitely a big upset for me.

Good takes, I agree and felt the same way about EVERYTHING you just said. Even the the first line of your description is on point. It's also worth noting that Riku and Kairi didn't have a single 1v1 dialogue the entire game, they did not talk to each other AT ALL.
I know I'm late to the vid but whoever edits dunkey's videos(whether it be him or another individual) they deserve credit. They are obviously an amazing team
I know this video is 4 years old but god is it cathartic to have someone verbalize and empathize with the betrayal this game instills. I wanted to love it so I did but damn was it disappointing and Dunkey hits every point exactly.
I think most of us felt that way. Like he said though, running around the worlds is a lot of fun. They are charming and seem like a lot of work was put into every little detail. Then the stupid story breaks up your fun. I'm trying really hard to get myself to just go finish it but... it's just so hard to want to play.
@Just Another Guy thank you for long version of what I felt... But can you summaries it, I need to use to those die-hard-fan because, it's not criticized-fan that ruining the game, the hardcore-fan that keep on feeding the publisher with money.
@@night00glider Its not a good opinion because gameplay wise they pretty much fixed Kh3 because they added critical mode and for the attraction you can disable them... Also with Remind they added fast combos like Kh2 so the gameplay is good now maybe even better than Kh2 because it was spamming reflect and gravity was broken
Especially when all the minigames except the Gummi ship are used once and never again, but they're just hard/specific enough that you have to understand them to beat them.
Remember when KH was about looking for your lost friends travelling between worlds while you fought the spread of the heartless? Every world was a "Kingdom". And you needed to save the hearts of the people using your magic key. "Kingdom Hearts" How something so simple became such a shitshow?
Also there is like 6 ansems, 3 rikus, 4 soras. Everyone is some one else but looks like other guy but is actually his heartless/nobody/is posesd be/has part of his heart or memories/is a time traveled younger version / evil counter part/inperfect clone of some other character. Its fucking dumb. Xion is an inperfect copy of Roxas with Soras memories that looks like Kairi. How writes this shit.
I think I've figured it out. The appeal of Kingdom hearts lies in the fact that between the good music/sound design, character designs, and those brief flashes of genuinely good writing or well-balanced character dynamics (and I mean REALLY rare, like maybe, oh... 2 interactions out of 358), you do feel SOMETHING. It at least manages to create the sense that there IS a dynamic and interesting world beneath the surface, but the whole time the player is just TRYING to break through to see more of it, and getting bogged down in fluff. For how little real, narrative substance there is, the fanbase has generated a STAGGERING amount of fanwork. I think that's because the series manages to hit JUST enough right notes that the more creative players ACHE to grab at the loose storythreads and CREATE THEIR OWN satisfying payoff. Kingdom Hearts is not a game you play for catharsis; it's a game you play to get material for your angsty fanfics.
No, the early games (mainly KH1, 2, CoM and Days) are just good, period (if you think the only examples of good writing are in these two scenes in Days, then I really don't know what to tell you, lol). KH1 did almost everything right and KH2 still has one of the best arcs I've witnessed in video games. It's just that the series got progressively worse over time, starting at DDD and culminating at KH3. The fact that some of us had to wait for KH3 for such a long time didn't help, because it made the game fall flat even harder.
@hcsnake Ah, sorry, my mistake. My intention was just to create a cute little joke on the silliness of the title - not to imply that only Days had any good scenes. I've played a lot of KH 1 and 2, and I have many, many wonderful memories of both games. But even as a fan, I can't ignore that there was a LOT of grind, and parts of the games that really dragged. I love the games, but not one of them is a masterpiece by any stretch.
the appeal in kh is how cheesy and corny and dogshit it is, it's the same reason people like watching the room. objectively bad movie, but still a fun watch
All joking aside this is similar to what Roger Ebert said was the secret of Star Wars’ success. That the real long-lasting magic of Star Wars is the fans’ imaginations and the stories they make up for themselves while playing with the action figures. Nomura himself asked the fans to use their imaginations to “complete the game for us” in his Director’s Letter for KH3. That’s fine, but maybe it would have been better not to lead fans on for 13 years thinking this was all heading to a specific destination where all the pieces would “Reconnect.”

Nah, the story is shit. Cut all the game except for the last hour, and that's all there is.

Ah yes people are still making fun of ign
IGN is paid to make good reviews of games. That's how they make money, from the games making money.
Lol for real? And I thought IGN reviews were already a joke.
To this day, I like how he made us sit through cut scenes to make us feel his pain
