@@Fralexion yeah when he was playing that compilation of repititive battle music in RPGs, I didn't really find the octopath one that tedious to listen to
To be fair, I always liked DQ's handling of the grinding with the metal ennemies. Once you understand that these are the shit to grind, you start minmaxing your party arround the fact that you need ways to deal with these, understanding the many tools the game gives ya to beat them and once you encounter them it's always a big moment where you hold your breath and pray for good rng. I get that it ultimately becomes really frustrating, but it's also like the fun of going into a casino and hoping for a good roll, and in the end even if the odds are stacked against you you always end up having results. In any case it's way better than "lesser ennemy bashing"
3:52 Holy shit. So I tend to listen to UA-cam videos instead of watching them. I had no idea how ingrained FFVII and Chrono Trigger were embedded in my mind. Instantly knew the music.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age S - Definitive Edition makes you FEEL like you could have beaten the game in the time it takes to say the title.
i get the enemy part, suddenly fighting an enemy named proffesaurus made my week. but 25 hour game streatched to 40 hours? i think you missed 30 hours of content by not hitting continue at the right time
This is actually a pretty fair take despite me giving it a much higher review personally. The grind is excessive after a certain point and is unfortunately necessary to get the true ending of the game, which is a bummer but it's also very Dragon Quest and Square Enix in general. I knew that going into it and I enjoyed it quite a bit anyway. One thing I will say that DQ11 does well is that it has an amazing time travel arc. Probably one of the most thoughtful and interesting ways I've seen time travel done in a story. It gave me genuine pause where I had to get up, pace around my room and think about the pros and cons. The characters are great and for a Dragon Quest game that is usually pretty formulaic, I felt this one broke out of that a bit in the story. It's definitely worth exploring and it was a very memorable experience.
*DRAGON QUEST 11 SPOILERS* Me at the start of the game: "man i hate this hendrick dude, why can't he leave us alone?" Me before the third act: "what do you mean i have to go back in time and leave behind my best friend hendrick?"
I play Dragon Quest to relax. I like that there’s a lot of it because I like to relax frequently and for long periods of time. Honestly I play these games in two hour sessions, usually like a bed time story, and it works flawlessly in this capacity. I hope I’m never so numb that this series doesn’t leave a smile on my face. It’s just so sweet and earnest and made with love.
@@breaking963 I played trough the game and only farmed twice and it was because I wanted to get some abilities for my characters, totally optional! @Dcvbkyrsscbgdsxcgf not necessarily. They are a form of escapist entertainment, like Books or TV. But it's more interactive which depending on the Devs can be made to be a grind and a waste of time like fighting weak enemies that pose no challenge over and over again until you get enough exp to progress or they can make then difficult like dark souls and have you test your reflex skills each time you face an enemy which is more engaging. But it doesn't have to be like this as there are plenty of puzzle games or story based games that focus on deliver a very compact experience that doesn't waste a lot of your time and you end up engaging your mind in the same way as you would when ready something awesome or solving a math problem. Point is there are time wasting games as there are ones that respect your time, and this is straight up a time waster.

@@realJaneDoe but... instead of killing punching bags for 3 hours, you can spend 20 minutes killing metal slime monsters, so that issue is non-existant in dragon quest games. oh, but he made fun of metal slime monsters giving so much exp, as if they weren't the literal solution to his biggest problem with this game. I love dunkey, but he is a fucking idiot sometimes.
He's mostly just taking the piss. Dunkey hates RPGs tho.
I love how the Octopath battle music intro looped sounds similar to the actual track
Yeah, it never occurred to me until now how good a job they did of not making that tune too annoying.
@@Fralexion yeah when he was playing that compilation of repititive battle music in RPGs, I didn't really find the octopath one that tedious to listen to

This game really makes you FEEL like Sylvando
Wait, a 3 from Dunkey?!
He woke up in a good mood...
I connect with Sylvando on a spiritual level. He wants to make the world smile, and he does it well.

@@Blittsplitt5 _"It's a story-driven game, story doesn't matter"_
@Filipe Baleijo When did I say that _"story-driven"_ is a genre? It's clearly not.
In any case it's way better than "lesser ennemy bashing"

sackchief NP man!
i get the enemy part, suddenly fighting an enemy named proffesaurus made my week. but 25 hour game streatched to 40 hours? i think you missed 30 hours of content by not hitting continue at the right time
Honestly, he's right. DQ games have always done that.
Amazing how you were able to avoid those enemies in the overworld even with a blindfold on.
It was impossible for Dunkey to not love Platypunk
It's definitely worth exploring and it was a very memorable experience.
grinding is just part of RPGs. it's also an opportunity to check out new music :D
*DRAGON QUEST 11 SPOILERS*
Me at the start of the game: "man i hate this hendrick dude, why can't he leave us alone?"
Me before the third act: "what do you mean i have to go back in time and leave behind my best friend hendrick?"
@@spacekoalalove can't disagree with you there. Although there are a few RPGs that respect your time better than a Dragon Quest game.

As soon as you mentioned my darling Sylvando I liked.
poor dunkey just doesnt know how to farm metal slimes.
Exactly, hours of grinding for him is actually minutes for me.
You shouldn't need to farm in the first place, that's the whole point.
@@breaking963 I played trough the game and only farmed twice and it was because I wanted to get some abilities for my characters, totally optional!
I´ve heard of A LOT of people that got trough the game without grinding, and I am sure I could´ve done it as well! Just do some side quests and you will be in a considerable advantage
@@breaking963 Great! Because you don't need to grind in DQ XI at all.
@demon1c guy Indeed, it is a fun alternative. But the grinding is also kind of fun.
I love the battle theme, battle animations, and set the party to “show no mercy” and the game never feels like a grind.
Exactly. I kinda do my own things as the auto fight works for me. Then when it's over, run to the next guy and get back to my own thing.

Long time Dragon Quest fan here, majority of my entertainment time went to this series and this was a fucking perfect review. Was super excited when I saw dunkey do this!!!
@Dcvbkyrsscbgdsxcgf jobs are a waste of time. revoke all material possessions and seek enlightenment.
@@GuyLogen you forgot to mention the most Important thing. Personal preferences, that is. There are ppl Like me and lots of other who Like old jrpgs with some grinding. It might be a time waster for you but certainly Not for everybody. Respect that
@@brotmitwurst4 I mean I like RPGs and even I know most of them are time wasters only other games to top them are mmorpgs.
It's not that I don't respect the people that like the grind, I was just pointing out to the guy that said all video games are meant to be time wasters. When there are games that only focus on telling a compact story or puzzle games and etc.
@Shaman X I meant mmorpgs top normal RPGs in the grinding segment. As in they are kings of grinding. You just read my comment wrong.

If this is an RPG thing, then you must be pretty new here. Dunkey doesn’t play turn based RPGs, so he’s not going to know a ton of their norms. If this is DQ thing, then the same thing especially applies, seeming as Dunkey has never really told anyone about DQ.
