Lyrics:
Pure as we begin
Pure as we come in
Pure as we begin
Ruled by will alone
Pure as we begin
Here we have a stone
Gather, place, erase so
Shelter turns to home
Pure as we begin
Here we have a stone
Throw to stay the stranger
Swore to crush his bones
Ruled by will alone
Spark becomes a flame
Flame becomes a fire
Light the way or warm this
Home we occupy
Spark becomes a flame
Flame becomes a fire
Forge a blade to slay the stranger
Take whatever we desire
Moved by will alone
Pure as we begin
Pure as we begin
Move by will alone
Leave as we come in
Pure as light, return to one
Move by will alone
Move by will alone

@Travis B fear inoculum is great imo both song and album pneuma invincible & 7empest also amazing.
@Travis B What the fuck are you talking about? "Crawl Away" and "Swamp Song" are both great songs, but even if you don't like them, you couldn't remove them from the album because they flesh out the theme of the album, which is about control, specifically the feeling of helplessness when you dony have control. And they use water as a metaphor for this.
"Undertow" is a fantastically daring concept album, because most concept albums focus on telling a narrative, but this one focuses on exploring an emotion and all the consequences of that, from broken relationships, resentment, drug abuse, relapse, child sexual abuse, coerced sodomy and loss of faith.
"Crawl Away" is about losing someone and having no control over the fact that they are leaving, despite doing everything you can to make them stay. And this leads to wanting to kill them if you can't have them. Or you can read it as wishing you could be the one to betray them instead of vice versa, thus restoring your sense of control.
"Swamp Song", I believe, is very obviously about addiction, but could be about any self destructive behavior, including a toxic abuser who hurts anyone they're in a relationship with. And again, here we see the water metaphor, with the swamp, bog, wading and quick sand. He is saying, "Don't follow me, or it will destroy you," but ultimately, when he realizes they won't listen, his feelings turn to anger, as they did in "Crawl Away" and as they often do on the album. That's why he calls them a "dumb ass belligerent fucker, I hope it sucks you down." Again, not only does he not have control over what's happening to him, he also has no control over the person who's following him in. And water again is the metaphor for this.
So you see, these two songs are indispensable to the album. In the same way, "Fear Inoculum" is vital for setting the tone on that album.
@Travis B First of all, this album is "10,000 Days". Second, I've heard other people parrot your same response, and it makes zero sense. I couldn't find anything on "Fear Inoculum" that sounded like they were retreading old material. Yes, it still has a distinctive style, but that's great. If the album had sounded nothing like them, people would complain way worse.
And anyway, the time signatures and polyrhythms on the album are completely unique, unlike anything they've ever done before. In fact, the album actually strays away from their previous work by not building songs around a riff, but instead the songs are built around different rhythms.
"Pneuma" is a fantastic example of this, where during the intro the drums actually foreshadow the melody that is to come, not just the rhythm but the drums are also playing the notes of the melody, which is really amazing and not something I remember ever hearing before.
The way time signatures and rhythms and polyrhythms are used on this album is really amazing. "Invincible" is a great example of this. The songs has these moments where the guitar, bass and drums are all playing in different time signatures, but as they repeat, they eventually catch up with each other so they land on the same beat, at which point the drums change time to match the guitar and bass before they all stop and allow for silence to take over before bursting forth once more playing together in a perfect 4/4.
All of the off beat stuff before builds a tremendous amount of tension so that when we hit 4/4 it feels amazingly satisfying. Something very similar happens in "Pneuma" during the verse which builds up to the chorus which actually doesn't have any lyrics, kind of like "Seven Nation Army". The verse is offbeat and tense and it builds this pressure which is release when the chorus kicks in.
It took me a little while, but after listening to this album a lot, I do believe it is their greatest album of all time. It seems that this is the peak they've been building toward all along and they've finally perfected their sound. "Pneuma", and "Invincible" are definitely two of the greatest songs they've ever written. "Fear Inoculum" and "Descending" are both great and fit perfectly in their places on the album. "Culling Voices" appears to be the weakest among them out of the gate, but again, when you view it from its place on the album, it fits perfectly. And "7empest" is just a straight up jam, something unlike anything we've ever heard from them before. I can dance to that song.
The album is a 10/10.
@Travis B I also said that it could very well mean betray and not kill. Thanks for reading my wall of text and being respectful.
That bass riff at 4:23 has to be one of the greatest creations of humanity

Listening to Fear Inoculum for 3 months straight and seeing them live made me revisit the entire 10,000 days album. I'm noticing things I've never did.

Yes same! I did not give 10000 days enough attention back in the day. Hearing Jambi live made me realize I used to skip over far too many of those tracks.
I had the same epiphany.
On a side note, Pneuma live was the greatest live performance I have ever seen.
I saw them on acid in Memphis back in January.
Tool's most underrated song. No doubt about it.
The bass line, coupled with the congos and vocal melody, is absolutely brilliant. This isn't a song. This a life experience that you need to experience in a darkened room with headphones. It's beautiful in so many ways.

the lyrics are describing the fall of man, and how transmuted the spark of the divine, turning it into fire to craft weapons and artificial layers of sin, this is the real meaning behind lucifer, from light to iron

This song has never been overlooked by me. It’s always been a top 5. It’s powerful yet gentle, it’s heavy yet meditative, it’s sexy yet lonely. I get visuals when listening to music, yet with this song at that lonely guitar breakdown I see black, I feel alone in the universe, but at peace.

I’ll be honest the bit with electro drums is a damn mess. Other than that it’s good stuff
I just see my origins. Not my ancestral origins per se, just the origins of what I am: human. And I am surrounded by other humans. Humans hate, but I don't hate. It makes me feel alien. But to avoid the deep pits of arrogance, I realize I am also human, and that I can also hate. Pure as I begin, move by will alone, I choose to build. Others choose to destroy. Just sides of the same coin. I may not see shapes and geometry from music without psychedelics, but I perceive concepts and connections as if those things had a separate sensory organ. In other words, it's just humbling to be reminded, that I am just human. Keyword: just. There's nothing special about being human, but our choices can be special anyway. Move by will alone.

Here i am again, after 15 years of listening to tool, still not bored of their songs. That base at 4:23 still gets to me.
The title of this track is a play on words. It’s a play on the word “intension,” meaning the core/internal matter of a given subject (in this case the subject would be free will) and/or a determination to do something in an archaic sense. “Intension” is a homophone of “intention,” which is essentially synonymous with will.

This album is one of the few I always listen to completely, and I love when Intension appears, one of the overlooked jewels of all Tool songs.
Most underrated tool song.
The best song of the best album TOOL has ever recorded. They said exactly what they had always wanted to say in this song with utter clarity.
Hard agree with everything here 🤘!!
All about Justin for this one.
Tool's hidden gem.
Justin's bass is so great
Incredible the feelings that are within me are. Relaxed.
Great song to meditate to
This is divine.
I honestly really love the ending, starting from 6:50, it’s a great way to segue into Right In Two
such an underrated transition
Those last notes are just pure bliss. Bittersweet makes you want to shed a tear while smiling
Tool is a unique band where there is always something new to discover. songs that, even after ten years of listening, still hide something from the ears.
I wouldn't say Tool is the world's greatest band. There is no one greatest, really.
To me they are MY greatest band, my favourite tool (hehe pun) to use while self exploring.
A perfect blend of the hard, earhtly rock and the calm, spiritual "out of this world". A yin and yang of a band. They are very grounded, yet stare at the night sky and reach as far as they can.
They help me to reach further.
Tool makes me wanna learn,.... the meanings to words he uses
good to know there is good music still.....peace
Moved by will alone - gives me chills everytime
I wish the old video of this song with the scenes of nature gets reposted to UA-cam. So many poeple describing the way this song makes them feel ie surrounded by nature, heavy storm, etc. the old video was the perfect fit for this song. OG tool fans know what video im talking bout, like if you are one of these cool humans.
Yes, the beautiful Life / Planet Earth montage went so well with the music. I'm devastated that it was taken down, it was probably my favourite video on YT. Like my therapy session.
Real Tool fans remember the snail video for "The Pot" too lol

5:09 - Goosebumps*
3:50 any beyond.....my favorite piece of music ever recorded.
this is so...experience is a masterpiece on so many levels
It's one of Tool's ASMR songs I have ever heard
Closest Tool song to my heart
