- Madeline Kobayashi is a Golden Apple Award winning language arts teacher and has been working with CCAS’s Professional Development team for several years to develop an Inquiry and Design based curriculum. We met Ms. Kobayashi when she attended our Young Adult Literature Conference, which features literacy activities and strategies to foster high classroom engagement. At the YAL Conference, Ms. Kobayashi participated in a workshop featuring the book, Darkroom: A Memoir in Black and White, and later wrote a Units for Books grant, which provided her classroom with a set of books and consulting from our PD team. This video features Ms. Kobayashi’s reflection on her process in creating and implementing the unit and documents her 9th grade classroom at Senn High School in 2017. Ms. Kobayashi later went on to be a presenter at the YAL Conference, sharing her process and findings with other teachers. The GEAR UP grant provides support for both the YAL Conference and the Units for Books initiative.
