I couldn't agree more. I'm about as far from an academic or intellectual as one could get, a truck driver as a matter or fact, and this was just like pure nourishment for my brain i was instantly so engaged i fired off 3 or 4 comments before Mr Wolf even finished his opening statement.lol My point is the gatekeepers think the average Joe has no interest in any sort of long form or in depth philosophical discussion/debate when that couldn't be further from the truth. These are the big ideas that will shape our future for better or worse and as a society we should be breaking them down, scrutinizing and re-scrutinizing them constantly from all sides n angles.
@@buckyflex1 Intellectualism is about sonder interest in the truth, not profession. I wouldn't make the assumption that a truck driver is incapable of being an intellectual. Frankly, discussion of important economic ideas *must* include the working class. That is the driving force behind Marxist ideology, whether you think economic systems should be capitalist or not. Frankly, I would prefer a capitalist system where some board chairs are just employee representatives, almost like a company parliament. The thing is, this might actually be less efficient than just having the government impose a required board structure. Conversation as to what the best form of the system would be is up for debate, but all stakeholders, including employees, should be considered.

Wolff doesn't really make any sort of point though... The gist of his whole argument is 'I want something else' But the thing he wants is already that we already have...? He just wants to force it onto everyone I guess...? He doesn't make anything close to a technical economic argument this whole debate. Not to mention that almost all of his 'points' about capitalism can be refuted by just silently pointing at Scandinavia...
Eros well Wolff’s whole argument is based on the whole Marxist idea that workers are exploited by wage labor. But we can look at Scandinavia and see some of the most most egalitarian and successful advanced economies of all time. Some of the highest GINIs, best economic mobility. All the social programs you could imagine... These are mixed ‘capitalist’ economies.. Free markets, large private, for profit sectors. This private sector and the growth it brings can be taxed to support social programs. Wolff’s whole argument that ‘capitalism’ is inherently exploitive doesn’t really stand up to common sense economics. At least domestically. Internationally is another long discussion to have.
John Proctor labor isn’t the only input of production. Labor is important but not necessarily all that important in many companies. We can talk utopia all day and use that as a framework to criticize the current system. But ‘workers DESERVE to be paid their average product of labor or it’s EXPLOITATION’ is a pretty dumb oversimplified starting off point.
John Proctor ‘some owners treated their slaves well and taught them to read’ You missed the entire point... As I said...the most advanced, economically mobile, richest, egalitarian system OF ALL TIME... That’s an achievement bud... But you just whine that it’s not good enough because of some flawed and oversimplified philosophy about 'exploitation' and baselessly compare it to slavery.

MrIHadToDoIt a good example of why not all unions are good. In this example, it gives undue to power to police, who are not working class. Their relationship to economic production is enforcement of the laws instituted by the ruling class (private capital). Unions are beneficial for the working class to collectively bargain, aka to have any chance at bargaining at all instead of simply being fired for asking for more equality. Spongebob and squidward need to seize the Krusty Krab. While Spongebob provides the labor for creating the burgers and squidward runs the front end of the business taking orders from the customers, the capitalist (pig) crab pockets the profit while giving the two workers a pittance. Nobody earns the value of their labor. Obviously this is why spongebob and squidward live in squalor and discomfort next to Patrick, who literally lives under a rock, while the bourgeoise live elsewhere. Krabs justifies his profit because he procured the capital to create the restaurant and owns the formula, while actively doing nothing of value for his workers or his society. Plankton, meanwhile, is a reflection of the class struggle as he is ruthlessly outmatched at every turn due to the inherent inequality in the system. Neither worker can “choose” to get another job because the reality of Bikini Bottom is that there aren’t any other reasonable options. Squidward obviously does not voluntarily wish to be there. There is a guise of individualism and self determination thrown over a flawed system. Unfortunately, as long as they can feel superior to Patrick, who is lower in society, they too believe they can one day be like Mr. Krabs.

The thing that struck me the most throughout the debate, is how two people with vehemently opposing views, respected each other, actively listened and could engage in heated conversation, without resorting to petty insults and underhandedness. They both remained lazer focused throughout and even managed to find some common ground. In parts of the debate they stood up and protected the others right to speak and be heard, when heckled by audience members. A lack of civility and the inability to respect a political opponent in this way, is perhaps the greatest threat to modern democracy, politics and freedom of expression we currently face. This is what serious people sound like. Very different from our world leaders isnt it?
I wonder how old politicians go to sleep peacefully everyday inthis day and age when so many people are afraid and hungry everyday. It is is so sad. And they all want to be humanitarians while killings of innocents go on and on everyday.
Gene Epstein begins with an apology to Richard Wolff for an earlier outburst, he subsequently transitions into a critique that personalizes the concept of socialism to Wolff’s interpretations, rather than addressing the ideology in a broader sense. This strategy subtly shifts the debate from a general discussion to a more personal critique, which could be perceived as a nuanced form of personalization that edges towards underhanded critique, albeit within the bounds of formal respect. EDIT: Yeah... Gene is literally attacking Richard's character and whenever he touches on the primary subject he just gives examples of all the current problems we are living with...
It was good to hear a debate about capitalism vs socialism without having a broadcaster pushing their agenda, and also seeing the two people debating let each other talk. Very interesting!
It was good, and the Capitalism’s argument was full of strawmaning. For example, the hypothetical about a socialist party winning the majority of votes of the ballot box, then introducing full blown socialism overnight. However, Socialism’s argument included the history of the process of Capitalism, it was not an overnight change from Faudism but a centuries long process. Just logically, that’s exactly how most ideas come to fruition. So it’s a bit of a strawman argument from Capitalism, which raises questions about integrity and trustworthiness.

This is one great debate in my opinion. The two protagonists seemed to be on the same page albeit with a different view. The foundation was the same. Advancement of the welfare of the people. This is what is meant by agreeing to disagree without being disagreeable. Bravo.
Great way of putting it. "Advancement of the welfare of the people". I know this isn't a political party debate but both conservatives and liberals are convinced that what they are doing is best for the people. After 12 years talking politics (much more to go I'm sure 😑), I've understood the issue is never black and white, but always nuanced and grey. We're always learning and seeing things from a different perspective. I just hope people don't forget that.
Great comment, but also, protagonist is the main character in a fictional work who advances the plot and likely the plot revolves around. Not really the right word choice, which is fine, just thought you might want to know that it was the wrong word choice. Sadly, this reality is not a fictional work... That we know of. 😜
Without incentive to work, to produce, very few will work or produce. There is no way to compel a members of a population to create an iPhone (Steve Jobs) or a laptop computer or the assembly line (Henry Ford) or the electric light bulb (Edison), UNLESS there is a justification for the commitment of time and effort. When socialism fails - when it becomes plainly evident that no one is going to work harder than their neighbor because that would allow the neighbor to be lazy - the leadership gets frustrated and seeks a remedy by dominating and threatening (and killing) the population. This has happened in every authoritarian socialist country. The failure to admit this truth is a poison on our species. The corollary is this. We do not yet have enough understanding of Nature to provide all the things we need for free. It will be hundreds of years before that occurs. When any person can have anything they want, at any time, in any quantity - technology will have advanced enough and permanently ended SCARCITY. Because that is the reason incentives are needed - to eliminate SCARCITY by way of increasing our understanding of Nature. Socialism and communism did not give us the airplane (the Wright brothers), the polio vaccine (Jonas Salk), refrigeration, the telephone (Alex Bell), and so on. Socialism and Communism are: - Venezuela - North Korea - Cuba - the old USSR No one flocks to those countries. People flock to the United States. People are not stupid, the bulk of us. .
@MrMorphicus I agree. I was a homeless teenager and a 10th grade dropout. By my mid-30s, I had independent financial means and never again had a boss or a 'permanent' job. It boils down to effort. If you are willing to make an effort in the U.S. you can improve your situation. How? I joined the military then went to college and made sure I studied a subject with lots of jobs available in the economy. It was not easy but it was worth it. People who think they want communism or socialism are liars because they can buy a one-way plane ticket to Venezuela or Cuba or NKorea and immediately live in socialism/communism etc. BUT THEY NEVER DO THAT. "I want socialism!" Okay relocate to Venezuela or another socialist country. "I don't want to go to all that trouble!" Why not? "Because I'm lazy!"
@MrMorphicus very true but what about the people not able to progress past their economic means because of their position in life which then in turn forces them to be stuck in the position of the employee and because pf that position they never rise up unless they can find either the means or simply put the willpower to do so. And alot of people don't have that
Covid didn't cause this. Government did. All of the socialist morons trying to say that this validates their ideology are idiots, through and through. @@michaelmappin1830 it is extremely incompetent, and that's why we should end it and instead have a capitalist approach to things like this. In the US, leaving it up to government meant that governors were ordering sick, COVID positive patients into nursing homes with the elderly who as we even knew then are the most vulnerable. It was also the FDA and other regulatory agencies which were slowing down the shipment of masks when people could have used them the most. Capitalist enterprises were ready to ship them but government got in the way. Then you also have governors shutting down the entire state when the best case for any shutdowns are in the biggest cities and NOT the entire state. If you go back to last year, half way through last year, to channels like Re Education and Beau of the Fifth Column, they break it down in a way that laypeople can understand- using the evidence provided by expert economists. But they warned of the coming downturn, and what regular people could do to prepare for it. So the crash was forecast well before covid. I have to note that Wolf was mostly on the defensive and he was defending a hypothetical system that has never existed and is unrealistic since there is a common flaw: Humanity. Power should never be consolidated and should always be shifting like in Capitalism. Wolf says real socialism has never been done before, well I could say the same for capitalism too. That is not a defense. The fact remains that freedom will always deliver the best results and have the best chance of success. Socialism, is artificially improved and wasteful, it is not sustainable and only thrives when it has the opportunity to syphon off a capitalist country.
@Orn Gorn Facism is right wing dude, it’s clearly right-wing. Part of the problem is that “right” and “left” are tricky to talk about, and it’s true that there are dangerous forms of extremism on both sides, but fascism tilts pretty heavily to the right in my view. If you think about fascism as a sliding scale, ordinary conservative politics is going to find itself somewhere on that scale - which is not to say that it’s fascist at all, any more than ordinary Democratic politics is communist. But just as extreme versions of communism suppress liberty on behalf of radical equality, so too do extreme versions of right-wing politics, namely fascism, suppress liberty in favor of tradition and dominance and power. Go look up the term fascism genius. Its all about power, you stupud motherfuckers on the right are braindead assholes that call the left names all day and then whine and act like the world ended when the left does it to you, and you know thats true, case and point: how you fuckheads constantly call everyone a communist on the left, gasp the communist wants my neighbor to struggle and get healthcare, how dare he.. Frankly, I would prefer a capitalist system where some board chairs are just employee representatives, almost like a company parliament. Wolff doesn't really make any sort of point though...
The gist of his whole argument is 'I want something else'
But the thing he wants is already that we already have...?
John Proctor ‘some owners treated their slaves well and taught them to read’
You missed the entire point...
As I said...the most advanced, economically mobile, richest, egalitarian system OF ALL TIME...
That’s an achievement bud...
But you just whine that it’s not good enough because of some flawed and oversimplified philosophy about 'exploitation' and baselessly compare it to slavery.

Police unions are the reason corrupt officers always get paid leave and rarely fired.

The purpose of the police union is to shield cops from the consequences of their unlawful behavior, which is disproportionately used to afflict the working class

*Don't let this comment distract you from the fact that mr krabs once sold spongebobs soul for 62 cents*
A true capitalist.
You didnt distract.... you brought this tragedy to my attention.
Krabs.
YES, an argument for socialism. Finally
Dandelo what kind of bullshit is that? crabs built the whole restaurant, he owns it, it is his, the formula is his, spongebob and squidward would have nothing without him, he could replace spongebob and squidward but they can‘t replace the formula, i don‘t know if you are just joking or just a dumbass but there are more than enough dumbasses who would believe the bullshit you just wrote so i took it serious

Nothing on television is good anymore.
@@mr12aT This debate was about socialism vs capitalism. But all that wolff was arguing was about why capitalism is so bad, that it is unstable, that and that. He never once presented the benefits of socialism. The capitalism guy literally said capitalism is not perfect and he listed the disadvantages, he said we should be careful with capitalism, and also talked about the benefits. Wolf never one talked about the benefits of socialism only why capitalism is bad. He did not talk about the disadvantages of socialism.
If someone tries to sell me a car and all he does is criticizing my current car, without talking about the the functionality of the new car,. 🏠 Stupid people System is the problem 🏡 Our Life should be around these Great Qualities.....
1, Show all living creatures; all the love and kindness as much as you can.
2, Only try to be honest with yourself. If you try to be honest with others, you will get into big trouble soon or later.
3, Aim only one target at a time; otherwise you are chasing two rabbits and you will miss both. So, the reason behind it. Have one powerful reason and never ever give up the one you want the most.
4, Don't try to be good person only but be the powerful person. We will grow to be the one or we will die. There is no other choice.
5, Always learn and look for to improve something your life.
6, You are not alone. Love and faith the high power reduces unnecessary stress in life. But never completely rely on it.
7, Success and happiness are the byproducts of our usefulness. So, always increase the possibility of success.
8, Life is not going to be easy. Because of our unnecessary things. Eliminate all the unnecessary things as much as you can by organising yourself well with the environments.
9, Never believe anything without the proper evidences.
10, Always try to give more than you take.
Because it is dignity/ character of the divinity within you.
🌎 As long as people continue to see themselves as separate from everything else, they lend themselves to being completely enslaved. Success depends on how well we relate to everything around us. Joy comes from that bliss of connectedness. I believe that unarmed truth and love will have the final word in reality. To love; you should have good heart. I am a good person until I see a person better than my standard of goodness. Being good is the progress towards a worthy cause. Love is God. Whoever lives in love, lives forever. How selfish it is to try to keep something forever? Love is all about nourishing, nurturing, sharing and expanding the love within you for all. The principle to which we adhere to is that we have kindness of love at heart for the whole of mankind. As long as there is the unnecessary differences within us; we can not live peacefully so we have to eliminate all the unnecessary differences among us so we can love all. People abilities may vary but not there true love. If we love a person/ God for a reason then we love the reason but not the person. No reason is the reason to love the person because true love never fails. So do not compare or measure the true love as first or the last but love all truly. If you love people truly then you can understand people. If you don't love then you don't understand people at all.
People are controlled by system why?
The Cyclical Consumption is the current economy all over the World. It is making the scarcity problems of the earth finite resources to deteriorate day by day. Current Monetary System is legalised theft. Real money is Gold and Silver. Scarcity gives the money more value. Real money won't lose it's value. When Governments stay away from Gold & Silver then very easy to transfer the wealth / resources to upper class the Rich (Corporatocracy) Elite. When the Governments are printing out more new fiat currency with reserve banks, our old currency is losing its purchasing power everyday. They are printing millions of currency everyday. All governments and laws are existing right now to transfer wealth to upper class the rich elite. The USA Government & other Governments are in many countries, bailed the investment banks & financial institutions in 2008 against the majority of the people. There is no democracy in any countries. Because of the Money System based on profits motive only above all else even humans lives and well-being. So, we do not have freedom to protect our values with the money so on. The violence, bankruptcy & all the negativities are build into the Monetary System of our society. All are owned (including ourselves) by Reserve Bank. Which is private cartel the corporation. So, in legal system, we are legally considered as chattel the properties. They make money in the capital markets with our birth certificates. They do not consider us as Humans. That's the truth. We are at the invisible war with the Elites (Corporatocracies). We have to fight for our Freedom. Resource Based Economy is the Solution. We have to declare the earth resources as the heritage of all the people of this world. So everyone has access to it. Please have your research about zeitgeist movement then you know the truth more.
Truth About Health/Drugs Industry Because Of It Your Life At High Risk The drug industry is a 1/2 trillion dollars a year worldwide conglomerate. Almost 300 billions dollars just in North America. That is really big business. What would happen if everyone were well? There is no money in health. You see, good health makes a lot of sense but it doesn't make a lot of dollars. Because everything they do is toxic. Every drug they use, prescription drugs, all drugs are liver toxic, bar none. If you've had amalgam fillings put in your mouth by dentists. It is highly toxic. There's cancer because most of the chemos are themselves carcinogens. To view the tumor as the cancer and we know the tumor is not the cancer. The cancer industry is 200 billions dollars a year. The more work they get, the more profit there is. You have to dismantle; If the truth ever came out about what we would need to do. 30% of people of females in America are at risk of getting, will get cancer of the breast. The ones that are already dead have been grossly mistreated by the medical profession and by the government that supposedly is supposed to encourage free research and development of all possibilities. Why would medical doctors who studied medicine and practice medicine and are heavily funded by pharmaceutical companies why would they go and look into vitamins? That they never had the answer orthomolecular. And as more and more of our population start taking their health into their own hands, there's going to be even more and more of changes. It can't go on the way it is. The system is failing apart. We must make nutrition the primary prevention strategy for the population. You are what you eat. You are everything that you have ever done to yourself. The choices you make directly affect the outcome of your life. - (Food Matters Documentary in Netflix)
😊 Well, I truly love God. I am not religious but very spiritual person. So, I believe 1) Religion is the beliefs in someone experiences But spirituality is having my own experiences. The mainstream religions people promote religious ideology by giving guidelines and guide but In my spiritual life; I do not want anyone or anything between God and me to restrict my freedom to worship God. 2) We do not need any authorities to do good work. The god work is the good work always. In contrast; organised mainstream religions are claiming that they have the authorities to do God works as leaders so on. 3) God is not capable of doing wrong thing, change the past for us and create anything out of nothing for us. Nothing means not anything. So, even God is limited. The mainstream religious people believe that God is unlimited. 4) God wants us to take responsibilities for our righteousness life but not for all the consequences of our actions because they are continued to exist among us. So, How can god punish us for all our consequences? The mainstream religious people believe we are full of sins because of all our actions. 5) Freewill is an illusion. People always choose the perceived path of greatest pleasure. So, we do not have choices all the time. In contrast teachings of the mainstream religions are promoting people to do god's will always because we all have choices of freewill always. 6) We can not separate everything into groups. So, everything for good and evil and there's no success and failure for everything. If everything is real then real things can not be threatened. Once you come to understand that God/The Holy Spirit is in each of us, You will no longer need a Book to tell you how to live. Then why we need religious scriptures? The Virtue is the expression of the basic goodness in our actions. The Basic goodness is the fundamental worthiness of every individuals. We are worthy to God always in everything. 7) Beliefs in a cruel God makes a cruel man. No matter what; every living creatures has the right to live and What makes their life cheap? Everything depends on everything. Nothing too big or too small in value. We can not love and hate at the same time; Being a vegetarian means love without cruelty happily. The mainstream religious people are killing people and sacrificing animals in the name of God. They promote God's cruel punishments. The Punishment is endless for Sinners/Devil according to religious scriptures. But God is love always. Overcome hate with love. If all religions for peace, unity? No way. Because they are not for peace. 8) Well, The God gave us everything to go from moment to moment in our lives as we do our part and pray only to thank god then the Love is in progress. The Love is always for everyone. We are always worthy of the God's love. Our greatest fear is; not to be loved by anyone but we are all loved by someone. When we eliminate all our unnecessary differences among us then true peaceful life is possible with the true love. If we can't find the peace within ourselves then we will never find it anywhere else. 9) This is the Fight for independence and freedom of humanity to worship God freely without religious guide and guidelines to restrict us. Unnecessarily, We do not want third party controls over us in anything ; especially in spirituality. 10) Revive Survive Thrive. Sincerely, The Real Peacemaker against religious oppression.

Socialism and Communism are:

- the old USSR
No one flocks to those countries.
People flock to the United States.
People are not stupid, the bulk of us.

@MrMorphicus I agree. I was a homeless teenager and a 10th grade dropout.

I'm in one such lockdown state, and we've seen very little of this virus yet more problems from lockdowns than the virus itself.
@@ExPwner He mentioned China to highlight your government in generality argument moot. It is that you live under a CAPITALIST owned government that doesn't give a fuck about you and is also incompetent, in particular the most recent administration of Trump.
Except the financial crash was already being telegraphed well before we o ew covid even existed.
Covid incited it, perhaps a month or two before it would have happened, and it certainly made it worse than it otherwise would have been. But it would have happened anyway.

Nothing more libertarian than an authoritarian, apathetic moderator.
Waited for him to ask if the age of consent laws would go away.
Someone needs to re-educate themselves on what libertarian means
@Orn Gorn Vague anger. I guess that's one way to go.
And also, you guys (generally speaking so dont take it personal, im just throwing insults like you just did to this Jorge guy) are such fucking hypocrites. Case and point: crickets with Trump corruption but went insane over obama wearing a fuckin tan suit and eating mustard on a hot dog. EMBARRASSING. What I do love though is how you guys think the left is the tarnished political base but damn near EVERYONE knows its the right thats the pathetic base, and it really is obvious thats true, the public and the world sees the left as hippies and the right as crazy religious zealots that want to control your life. Your side has brainless idiots like steven crowder, change my mind pussy.
@@bertohead it goes back 500 years and was re-coined as anarchism in the 19th century by Pierre Proudhon. In the early 1970's, right wing fucking shitheads re-appropriated their ultra conservative, capitalist nastiness as Libertarianism. The Libertarian Party was born and anarcho-capitalism, a Franken-politic, was created. Libertarianism has always and will forever be anti-capitalist.

My husband's brother was reading a book on marxism in high school and he got suspended from school. The US the land of the free. Haha
Yeah, people can get touchy when someone is making a public show of reading a text that lead to the deaths of around 100 million people in the 20th century. Weird, huh? However, Marx is not banned in the US. You can still read his books if you wish, just as you can read Mein Kampf, if you're more of an ethno-nationalist socialist over a Marxist, for example.
did your husband brother ever read any book from George Orwell named animal farm ?
did you now a country that ever run by marxism in reality ?

Unbelievably true. If Socialism was a stable and flourishing economic platform it wouldn't struggle against capitalist embargo and criticism.

@@Notpresent-1 North Vietnam received constant military support from the Chinese and other SE Asian dictatorships. While Western manpower in the South was nowhere near as much. This debate is being appreciated so much simply because there is less emotional rhetoric, that is people not screaming on the top of their voice and making weird faces, and instead has more factual perpespectives.
Good note. I think it’s important for all people to understand that everyday people, capitalist or socialist, want to find ways to make a better world.
