Great video as always Brian. Just to further add to what you've already mentioned about there being a pre-existing injury, I think he was landing hard leg kicks with the same leg without any visible discomfort. So I have a strong hunch that he broke it during the fight instead of camp.
In the post interview Dustin mentioned that he might of felt something off when he was checking those kicks. And looking at the kicks, those were hard hits...reminds me of Silva's injury.
Those leg kicks are known to do that, and it's part of why they do body hardening in Muay Thai- repeated microfractures lead to increased bone density and callus formation. The axe style kicks he was using on the ground are also high stress, though you generally feel them higher( mid shaft to tibial tuberosity area).
Yes a few of those hard kicks were checked which likely caused a fracture.
Were there many checked kicks? I thought it was likely when Connor kicked Dustin in the hip bone. His leg seemed to flex unnaturally a little.
And that was just before this happened.
@@EverteFarnell no before they even got on the ground one kick hit Dustin just above the knee it didn't look like much but it probably gave it a tiny fracture that added on with continuous strain and it eventually just broke
Every athlete dreads the day Brian makes a video about them.

I mean he has made complementing videos like on why bam adebayos nba block was just that good
He didn’t have enough time to condition his shins properly. It takes a good few months and years to have strong shins. And he was throwing kicks really hard. He most likely had maybe mirco-fractures in his fight camp
He hurt his ankle tho...not his shin
He got checked. His shin connected to the front of Dustin’s knee early in the fight.

Definitely think it was fractured during the kick check that Dustin pointed to earlier. Crazy to see it collapse under his own weight live
i think it takes about a year and a half, judging by other broken legs like this in sports
A total of 0 kicks were checked by Dustin in that fight.
Saenchai said his kicks are weak. I don’t think he has done near enough shin conditioning.
whether it was a check or not, that kick was enough to break an ankle ligament and cause the instability that led to a break as everything collapsed. the pop of a big ligament breaking is also a fair bit of energy, so it might be something dustin would notice as odd. a large sprain or a small break could both produce the result we got
@Peter Evans 🤭😂😂 why man! Why you gotta be like that
2:03 The initial fracture happened earlier in the round (like Dustin said) when DP checked a leg kick. Dustin could tell by the way their legs struck one another that something had happened to Conor's shin. During the fight DP checks the kick then points at Conor as if to say "did you feel that?"
Conor still had a pre existing crack in the bone going into the fight. Tells you how savage the guy is… so many would have pulled out of the fight but Conor never does.

It appeared to me- that it was the front kick (checked by Poirer) to the elbow with 10s left in Rd1 which initially caused a fracture or injury compromising the tibia’s integrity. Then when he went to step back the twisting motion to the already compromised bone caused the more severe break.

Dustin said Conor most likely fractured his foot initially when Conor threw a leg kick and Dustin checked it. I didn’t even see that first little break either. That adds a ton of credibility to Dustin’s claim. Conor fractured it on the checked kick, furthered the damage on that first step, then totally broke it when he stepped back on. Excellent video, dude.
He's a doctor, not 'dude'
Doctors can be dudes. Why not.
Except if you go back and watch the kicks, especially the one Dustin said he, " checked ", you will see he never actually checked it, or any kick for that matter. The kick in question actually lands behind the knee. My guess is Conor had a bunch of micro stress fractions going into the fight and all those hard leg kicks he was throwing just worsened it to the point that it just eventually gave way.

I was waiting for your video (and knew it wouldn't be a long wait) because it seemed so odd that it broke on such low impact. Dustin said he thinks it was weakened earlier on a checked kick. I think this gives McGregor an excuse to move to celebrity boxing full time.
My guy is really milking the algorithm with this channel lol fair play to you doc, and great AND fast content as always
Seriously, he’s suggesting a tibia and fibula fracture from a misstep, which is insane.
I was literally spamming my refresh button waiting for the vid to pop up, ALWAYS HERE WHEN WE NEED YA DOC THANKS
Really interesting video. McGregor was definitely using that left leg for quite a lot kicking from the get go, he landed a good few kicks to the outside of Poiriers knee and shin, and that must have been the cause of some kind of trauma or hairline fractures before the actual fracture you're pointing out. Poirier was definitely checking those kicks, his knee was bent forward to take the blows. There were also a couple of moments where McGregor was sensitive with planting on his left foot at different points during the fight, so it might have happened early on too, and the subsequent kicks may have made it worse until the break.
Poirier called it after one of the checks. You can see him point at Conors leg after he checked the kick because he knew how hard Conor threw it and where it landed.
Not to mention a camp of most likely working on leg kicks that could cause stress or micro-fractures to the legs leading up to the fight
Dang, this just happened, and has the best footage (pun unintended) on UA-cam so far. Nuts man
Thanks for being so on it. The fact you saw the fracture before anyone else is mind blowing.

Most everyone saw the first wobble, but it's just the second part that was highlighted and talked about.
I wonder if he can find where the break happened before the bones gave out. If it was a kick conor threw. Or if it was from wrestling. Somehow the leg held together until that point.
Was waiting for this video right after it happened, just tragic💔

When your adrenaline is flying so high you don’t have as much control over your body.
Partly adrenaline. Part of it is endorphins, and part of it is any fighter knows fighting hurts. You ignore low level pain because everything hurts. It hurts when you strike, block, or get hit. You fight through that.
Hi doc Bryan, thanks for this video! During post-fight interview, Dustin said that the trauma could have happened when Conor checked Dustin's kick early in the round. I think you need to have a part 2 session on this to dissect the cause of the injury further. :)
Agreed
Consider the entire chain of events leading up to the acute injury: full training camp, with ample focus on kicking the heavy bag, due to the manner in which the last fight progressed (Dustin using calf kicks to compromise the leg before finishing with strikes), opening the rematch by throwing naked kicks, several of which were checked by Dustin, leg/ankle is already compromised before the tape highlighted in the video.

@@stephenalbin6723 nobody in Ireland likes Conor.
@@martinh1309 ok. I believe you 🤣🤣🤣
Damn I'm sorry bro..
Thank you for your service to our troops..
We appreciate you 🇺🇲🇺🇲
Everyone is missing where Conor blasted a leg kick and Dustin perfectly checks it, straight foot to knee. You think it was a coincidence that Dustin pointed at it and claimed he felt a pop from the check? Mystic Poirier? No, it was perfect defense from a high-level fighter countering overly aggressive strikes.
Conor's ankle just needed to take a break is all
Aye, it'll be good in a snap.
How did you just watch an MD break down the fracture and you still refer it to as an ankle injury? Smh.
@@burekskremicem hey there bud
Relax
Maybe Conor took someone's well wishes literally when they said "break a leg!"
stolen comment you lifeless tripe
@@pascalolesen5187 oh wow cuz that never happens. you're the loser reading and policing comments
Dee before Conor left . "Break a leg Honey".
I WAS WAITING FOR YOU DOC!!!
Seeing someone else's ankle roll brings back horrifc memories of my ankle roll injury. Been protecting and training both since
Dustin did say he felt something go when he checked a kick early in the fight...Mcgregor didn't like that and ran his mouth as usual lol
I need a Hirving “Chucky” Lozano video ASAP !
Asked that too
What happened to him?:0
Yeah shitty ref man
@@luisgutierrez5724 broke his eye socket I believe
I think he fractured his tibia when Dustin checked one of his kicks earlier in the fight. After the check Dustin smiled and pointed at that left ankle. After that check Conor didn’t look the same on his feet.
Well yeah, that's literally what Dustin explained happened.
That’s a complete guess, he still threw multiple kicks after that moment and looked fine.
No. He checked it and it was his foot kick that he pointed out. If it cracked at that point you would’ve seen some sort of reaction from Conor at least. I don’t think that’s what broke it man. It’s a crack it’s not something that you can’t notice
I have two theories on how his leg broke. 1) He fractured his ankle on Dustin's elbow when he checked the initial high kick. 2) McGregor tends to lean into things in camp to prove people wrong, I suspect he may have been drilling kicks for days with unnecessary trauma to the ankle which made for an easy break on fight day.
It is more painful to watch as he is explaining how it happened 😂
exactly 😭😭😭😭
@Geo me cards Conor saying he was going kill Dustin, everyone knew he didnt have a leg to stand on
Conor knew that he was going to leave on a stretcher!
Doc, did it fracture when Dustin checked the kick? Dustin said he felt the impact of Conor's kick. I'd like to know if that's what really happened. In case you didn't hear, Dustin said it was when he points at Conor, cause he knew that was a hard check.
99 percent of the time when a break like this happens in the UFC it's from an opponent checking Connor mccgregors leg kick. Anderson Silva also had a very famous injury just like this. Where an opponent checked Anderson Silvas leg kick and it broke silvas leg in a similar position. I am pretty sure is watched this fight and that is exactly what happened.
No check actually hit there though everyone talking about the check dustin pointed at him over conor hit him with the end of his foot not the shin so no fracture there
When I saw this last night, I was like I wonder when the UA-cam doctor will make a video and what he will say. Lol
Dustin straight up said it was from checking one of Conor's leg kick. That seems to me to be the catalyst. No?
There is no leg check:
ua-cam.com/video/KK7xB0XDbmw/v-deo.html
He fractured his shin bone on Dustin's knee.
Bullshit watch the fight analysis dustin didn’t block 1 kick watch the weasels video.
@@theresurrectionmen8707 People are fucking blind, they replayed the leg kick even in slow mo and it's obvious it wasn't checked and Conor hit with the end of his foot. Not even his shin.
@@burekskremicem thank you at least someone has brains here
And really if it was that kick he claims to have checked. why didn’t break Mcgregor it after all the times he still kept kicking with it full-power. That creates way more pressure on a already fragile leg then stepping on it with your own body weight.
@@theresurrectionmen8707 it was either broken training the kick or during one of the 8-9 kicks landed on Poirer.. Wake up. Poirer is actually a good bloke..
