The wrestler is supposed to hit the chair below their opponent with the chair they're holding, making a big noise but actually slightly missing the person. Because they were on a ladder and couldn't set up as perfectly as they would have liked, he actually got hit.

Mick Foley ear loss was half the story. Before the match one of the wrestlers said the ropes were slack, they weren't, but the officials tightened them anyway. One of Micks signature moves back then was to flip around the rope and be in like a hangman position. He was being actually hung though so he forced the ropes over his face, causing the ear to tear.
I hadn't scrolled far enough so I'd just wrote basically the same comment lol. I'll add the one thing in my comment that's not covered here. Folks should read Mick Foleys "Have A Nice Day" book, one of the few autobiographies of a wrestler actually written by the wrestler.
the incident with Rosmary is when wrestlers "go into business for themselves" or go off script usually because of personal things that happen backstage or if while in the ring one wrestler decides to "no sell" a move which no selling is considered disrespectful.
The weird thing about pro wrestling is that because it's dismissed as "not real" the performers often feel like they want to try harder to be "tough" and as it's not a traditional sport there isn't really any mandatory doctor stoppage.
They are actors. The only time an actor wants to break character while filming is intentional 4th wall breaks. It's more that because people want to think it is entirely fictional, the injuries that are suffered are also fictional.
They do have ringside medics, and they do their best, like in an MMA fight, to decide how bad an injury is. For better or worse, they're not really supposed to get injured at all, but considering the contact, they're not getting their heads knocked in like in boxing or MMA, and that means you can't always see the injuries if there's not broken skin or something bent the wrong way or nobody seemed concussed.
regardless of real or not, it's crazy to me how we call what is essentially peole beating each other up (sometimes to life threatening deegree) a "sport".
7:44 he mentioned on an episode of his podcast that some lucky choices he made saved him; he wore his loose long coat that could be removed easily and he’d doused himself in water before the match.
1:18 This match took place in Germany under WCW. The other wrestler, Vader, wasn't the only factor playing into Mick's ear getting ripped off. They had previously done a maneuver where Mick tumbles over the top rope and gets his head/neck twisted up between the 2nd and 3rd ropes. At that point he's hanging on the outside of the ring with extreme pressure on the sides of his neck. Another wrestler had complained that the "ropes" (WCW used elevator cables covered in rubber) were too loose and had been tightened earlier in the evening, now causing Mick to become trapped and begin passing out. He (rightfully) panicked and managed to push his head through the ropes. Tearing his right ear most of the way off in the process. Regardless of whether he knew it or not at the time (he didn't), on with the match.
3:03 the reason why he did that is because it is supposed to be safe; one chair is under the victim’s head, and another chair is supposed to look like it hit the victim’s head, but it is actually getting really close to hitting their head and the noise is just the edge of the chairs colliding. This was an accident
As someone who trained in pro wrestling has had 3 professional matches in local shows. When you hear an Audible groan from a wrestler after a slam like 15% of the is acting but the other 85% of that is 100% real. It’s a tough profession
A lot of people hate on wrestling for being dumb (and…it is), but in a world full of so much seriousness, sometimes something dumb is exactly what we all need, and I respect these people for the insane lengths to which they’re willing to go to entertain the fans. Not a lot of other professions involve so frequently pushing past things that would fold most of us like a pair of pants

I did not expect to be listening to this in the background and have a lighbulb moment about my kneecap, the pain and it being higher than it used to be... And my EDS. Thanks Doctor Mike! 😂👍
I recently started watching Vice’s docu-series Dark Side of the Ring and though I’ve never had any interest in pro wrestling, it’s definitely given me a lot of insight into the controversies and darker aspects of wrestling. If anything, it’s at least allowed me to recognize more of these people instead of just knowing the “big ones” ie Undertaker, Stone Cold, John Cena, etc.
12:19 I’m a healthcare professional with a macabre interest in the anatomy/phys behind these injuries, so most of it is just part of the gig. But man, nothing can make me pucker quite like watching a muscle bunch up after one of the tendons tears, especially the pecs or biceps. UGH. 😭
5:15 It's possible he didn't "go deaf" but the cauliflower ear was so bad it obstructed the ear canal and effected his hearing? Kinda like using earbuds or hold your hands over your ears. You're not deaf but you can't hear, if that makes sense 😂
I got small hernia from powerlifting and a hemroids from idiotically picking up a very heavy big rig truck transmission I didn't feel it at first until a week later felt like it was being pulled and if I touched my belly button it hurt like I was stabbed
Kofi Kingston has actually stated that his pectoral malformation has been lifelong issue, even seen in his early Jamaican days, this is just how his chest looks, which I can confirm as I have a similar issue

1:37 Thank you !!! for adding to the list of people missing an ear. I wrote awhole letter about people missing an ear once ....it was interesting stuff. 👂
The injury in the women’s clip was basically because one of them got mad in the middle of the match and decided to purposely injure the other. That kind un unprofessional behavior happens often in Mexican wrestling. You can make a whole video with horrific stuff happening there. Years ago one wrestler even threw a cinder block at the back of the head of his opponent 😬
@@KxNOxUTAactually those who go into these types of sports aren't angry people and therapists recommend people with anger issues take on like boxing, wrestling all that cuz it helps and they learn to control their anger this was just an instance of someone taking it too far for no reason and rightfully lost their career over it

There's a Japanese wrestler called Katsuyori Shibata who delivered a headbutt in a match so sickening it split him open then and there and he collapsed backstage and almost died from a subdural hematoma. Not only did he manage to survive but miraculously he returned to wrestling and wrestles to this day, although he does so in a much more ground-based style with much less risk, especially to his head.
3:06 Fun fact Dr.! The conchairto is still performed to this day *however* it now is done by slamming the tip of the chair onto the other end of the chair, gives the same effect of hitting the person on the head without actually giving them... Ya know... brain damage... Its often used to writing people off TV for a while.
Also on the Eddie Guerrero part of how he passed away he had past addictions with pain medications which while he overcame that addiction it’s probably what contributed to his early passing.
You talking about the incarcerated bowel with no blood flow reminds me of an emergency surgery I needed in February. Turns out I had a 10cm teratoma that caused an ovarian and fallopian tube torsion. I'd love for you to cover this in a video! My husband still doesn't understand the incredible pain I was in and how serious it could have been had I not gone to the hospital when I did. I had to have surgery on a Monday morning instead of being on a plane to Vegas for vacation with him. And holy mackerel, the pain AFTER surgery was worse than the pain before surgery. The pain you're in from how they position you on the OR table, the pain from the gas they inject into your abdomen and even the neck pain from being intubated is crazy! I felt like someone pushed me down a concrete staircase and then beat my whole body with a metal baseball bat! They pulled the teratoma out through an incision right below my bellybutton and I never knew your bellybutton could hurt so bad!!
@@Chuck_EL Thank you! 😊 It's kind of crazy to be just be living normal life one minute (getting ready for vacation) and then all of a sudden be in horrible pain and end up needing emergency surgery. As a WWE fan since the late 90s, i always love these type of videos, btw sidenote, if a superstar has a legitimate, the referee will throw up a X, letting EMTs know hey we got a real injury over here
The worst part about the undertaker getting burned, was that he told the guy who was doing his pyro that it was too close to him, but he said it was fine. The undertaker said he wasn’t there when he got backstage, and he never saw him again. Hopefully he got fired.
We do need to make this a trilogy, we can't talk about wrestling injuries without discussing the time Vader's eye popped out during a match in Japan and he just popped it back in and continued like nothing happened.
Doc Mike, amazing content, though I would love to see your reaction to Katsuyori Shibatas injury at NJPWs Wrestlekingdom. All I was told is that it was the worst concussion in recent history and that its called a dehydrated brain I think. I would love to understand more, especially since Shibata actually fully recovered even after wrestling for another 15~20 minutes.
I've phrased these to not fully spoil Dr. Mike, but here are some more worth examining: Sid's leg Vader's eye Vince McMahon Rumble 05 Sabu's arm Bill Alfonso vs. Beullah Mabel vs. Taker X-Pac Bronco Buster Abdullah's forehead in general Cornette falls from the scaffold Becky's nose New Jack & Vic Grimes [both times] Brock's moonsault ...pro wrestling fans should all know at least a few of these from those descriptions alone.
The "conchairto" on the top of the ladder probably would've been fine on the ground. Edge wasn't high enough on the ladder to get the right angle of the chair shot to hit the chair behind Christian's head rather than his head itself. Brutal move that is rough to get just right.
There is some missing context in this for Mick Foley losing his ear, at least how it's presented in the video. They, Mick Foley and Vader, are wrestling in Germany. Mick goes for the "Hangman spot", a stunt where he goes over the top rope but gets his head tangled between the top and middle ropes. Normally, there would be enough tension to give the appearance of him being choked by the ropes, but still enough room to breathe. Unfortunately the crew responsible for assembling the ring over-tightened the ropes on the ring that night, and when he goes for the spot, he is legitimately being strangled. So as the officials and medical team try to pry him out from the ropes, his ear gets sinched in between the ropes, and the ropes tear his ear mostly from his head. They continue the match, and you see from there how his ear is ultimately torn from his head.
I had a concussion two years ago from getting tackled in soccer and I never recovered from it. It's crazy people can have this happen to them and get better.
The cauliflower ear has nothing to do with WWE itself. Just because those guys were WWE wrestlers doesn't mean that's how they actually got it. Brock got his from MMA, Bruno got his from boxing.
[3:56] I imagine an inguinal hernia diagnosis going something like this: Patient: "Doc, I've got some serious pain in my ballbag." Doctor: "Yep. That's because you've got guts in your nuts."
3:00 since WWE’s inception, up until Chris Benoit incident (partially or fully caused by the huge amount of CTE caused by flying headbutts and chair shots), the chairshot to the head was as normal as taking a stomp to the head on the steps, or a punch lol
I remember first learning about Strabismus a few years ago. I briefly researched it because for reasons unknown to me, I can direct my left eye to dart outward while staring forward with my right eye and vice versa. I assumed it was so form of esotropia but when I asked the eye doctors I saw at the time, they just told me I have loose muscles in my eye. I don’t know whether or not it’s true considering I’ve never experienced any injuries or had any developing traumas to give me the “ability,” it’s just something I’ve always been able to do since childhood.
At WrestleMania 39 at SoFi Stadium this year, we witnessed our fair share of injuries including Finn Balor getting his head stapled in the ring after a botched move with a ladder; and Shane McMahon tore his quad during his cameo appearance 😳

@@TonySamedi I have that book. A fantastic read.
For many wrestlers, it would have been the most traumatic injury of their career. For Mick Foley, it was a Tuesday.
@@Arum638TOTALLY underated comment 💯
the incident with Rosmary is when wrestlers "go into business for themselves" or go off script usually because of personal things that happen backstage or if while in the ring one wrestler decides to "no sell" a move which no selling is considered disrespectful.
There have been matches called off due to medical reasons both kayfabe and real
They do have ringside medics, and they do their best, like in an MMA fight, to decide how bad an injury is. For better or worse, they're not really supposed to get injured at all, but considering the contact, they're not getting their heads knocked in like in boxing or MMA, and that means you can't always see the injuries if there's not broken skin or something bent the wrong way or nobody seemed concussed.
regardless of real or not, it's crazy to me how we call what is essentially peole beating each other up (sometimes to life threatening deegree) a "sport".
@@koutsioj4762 well I hate sports and violence, so it's a surprise even to myself how into wrestling I am
This was the most difficult Dr Mike video I've ever gotten through. Good lord a lot of these were brutal.
seriously lol.
I'm aware of some injuries that these pale in comparison to.
The Sid Broken leg was the worse injury I've ever seen in pro wrestling
Dr Mike I just genuinely want to thank you for the medical information that you have provided.
A correction at last part that when your bicep muscle goes up, it means you have tore your bicep "tendons" not muscles.
@@30pranaypawar17huh?
3:03 the reason why he did that is because it is supposed to be safe; one chair is under the victim’s head, and another chair is supposed to look like it hit the victim’s head, but it is actually getting really close to hitting their head and the noise is just the edge of the chairs colliding. This was an accident
As someone who trained in pro wrestling has had 3 professional matches in local shows. When you hear an Audible groan from a wrestler after a slam like 15% of the is acting but the other 85% of that is 100% real. It’s a tough profession
WWE
A lot of people hate on wrestling for being dumb (and…it is), but in a world full of so much seriousness, sometimes something dumb is exactly what we all need, and I respect these people for the insane lengths to which they’re willing to go to entertain the fans. Not a lot of other professions involve so frequently pushing past things that would fold most of us like a pair of pants
Fortunately, pro wrestling isn't a recklessly destructive kind of dumb, unlike that show Jackass.
My goodness!!! Thank you Dr Mike!!! I am a first year Sonography student in South Africa and I always open your videos when I'm studying as I get to receive information in a more fun way. You really helped me a lot this year with anatomy and physiology and as a result I did well in those modules. I actually have seen patients with a hernia but always forgot to do some research. Now I will never forget what a hernia is. Your content is not just fun but informative, especially for us students, I have learnt a lot from you. I am looking forward to more videos as I progress. Lots of Love♥
UGH. 😭
If Mike ever sees Psycho Sid breaking his leg, he is jumping out of his seat for sure.
The wrestler who refused to let go during the submission has been blacklisted from essentially every wrestling promotion due to her actions
Always impressed how Dr. Mike always, always notices things in videos that I miss. He's always two steps ahead of me.
5:15 It's possible he didn't "go deaf" but the cauliflower ear was so bad it obstructed the ear canal and effected his hearing? Kinda like using earbuds or hold your hands over your ears. You're not deaf but you can't hear, if that makes sense 😂
Dr. Mike describing hernias in detail was the nightmare I didn't know I needed this morning.
I got small hernia from powerlifting and a hemroids from idiotically picking up a very heavy big rig truck transmission I didn't feel it at first until a week later felt like it was being pulled and if I touched my belly button it hurt like I was stabbed
@@Chuck_ELso how are you now?
love your videos mike. You keep entertaining us and give us more knowledge about medical science.
Kofi Kingston has actually stated that his pectoral malformation has been lifelong issue, even seen in his early Jamaican days, this is just how his chest looks, which I can confirm as I have a similar issue
Ah, a new Doctor Mike video, bound to learn something.
"-where you can have intestines in your scrotum"
I regret having the ability to learn
He should have put that no signal screen
4:04 "You can actually have intestines in your scrotum" Well, that's a new fear I have now 😨
We appreciate your insights, Dr Mike. Keep working hard as always.
Bro wants dr mikes meat 💀

in 3:34 , usually wrestlers stay in there place and accept there fate , but the undertaker was fast and got away just in time , one of many reasons undertaker is my favorite wrestler
1:37 Thank you !!! for adding to the list of people missing an ear. I wrote awhole letter about people missing an ear once ....it was interesting stuff. 👂
I like the fact that there are always more views than comments on the video itself. By the way, keep up the good work on your videos, Dr. Mike!
Yup it's called "shooting" which is a big no no and instant firing if not being sued
How very "surprising" that ppl in that sport struggle with emotional regulation (-_-#)
@@KxNOxUTAactually those who go into these types of sports aren't angry people and therapists recommend people with anger issues take on like boxing, wrestling all that cuz it helps and they learn to control their anger this was just an instance of someone taking it too far for no reason and rightfully lost their career over it
there was a match like this between Act Yakusawa and Yoshiko that was just brutal and for a time career ending
Thank you Dr. Mike for telling everyone who’s watching this what this stuff is. Thank you for everything you do to be a doctor and take care of it of everyone. Thank you.S is really really important. I want to share that legacy.
Number one was my favourite video from you and now that you made a part two makes me happy, plus I'm learning lots from you man, thanks so much dude🙏🙏, and you reacting to tap out is amazing, I also love that dude
1:07 I was drinking my Pepsi when I saw this 😭
i have never heard a more sad thing in my whole life
Mick Foley and the way that he committed himself blows my mind every time.
3:56 😨😨😨😨 WELL THAT'S SOMETHING I DIDN'T NEED TO KNOW COULD HAPPEN! I COULD HAVE MY GUTS KNOCKED INTO MY BALLS!?!
Wow those were rough.. Interesting to watch medical wise but omggg sooo painful to watch😭
Thank you for all the amazing medical content💖
0:15 (i immediately change my arm position)
Also on the Eddie Guerrero part of how he passed away he had past addictions with pain medications which while he overcame that addiction it’s probably what contributed to his early passing.
Yoo u never dissapoint its always entertaining to watch you!
Ouch glad you gotten it taken care of
@@Chuck_EL Thank you! 😊 It's kind of crazy to be just be living normal life one minute (getting ready for vacation) and then all of a sudden be in horrible pain and end up needing emergency surgery. I'm so glad it's all behind me! It's just crazy how things can turn on a dime! It was a good lesson to be thankful when you're healthy!

@bzyspecial that's not funny
Does it hurt to poop now?
5:52 Dr mike just correcting you on one thing although he did use steroids that's not why his chest looks like that,he had surgery were they had to cut part of his muscle that's why his chest looks like that
Yikes! Dr.Mike you have motivated me to become a doctor and I have enrolled in pre-med school because you interest me in medicine. ❤
Love you vids Dr Mike! I would love to see you react to hockey injuries next, those guys are crazy!
Woah!!! Nice Royal Oak doctor Mike. It's a rare one as well! 😮
Nice catch!
you have to do a video on your watch collection! i would love it@@DoctorMike
Two things, first, Rest In Peace Eddie, you will be missed, and second, Dr. Mike since we are doing sports injuries, why not try Rodeo Injuries
BROOOO IVE BEEN WAITING AND HOPING FOR THIS PART 2 THANKSSSS MIKE 🙏🙏🔥🔥🔥🔥
I feel like Mick Foley’s injuries history can be one whole video itself, man has gone through lots of dangerous spots
I was sitting ringside for some of those injuries. I remember the first time he broke his back. Having scoliosis myself, the sound of a vertebrae snapping was one you really don’t forget.
Great job doctor Mike! Love your vids!
I've phrased these to not fully spoil Dr. Mike, but here are some more worth examining:
Sid's leg
Vader's eye
Vince McMahon Rumble 05
Sabu's arm
Bill Alfonso vs. Beullah
Mabel vs. Taker
X-Pac Bronco Buster
Abdullah's forehead in general
Cornette falls from the scaffold
Becky's nose
New Jack & Vic Grimes [both times]
Brock's moonsault
...pro wrestling fans should all know at least a few of these from those descriptions alone.
The "conchairto" on the top of the ladder probably would've been fine on the ground. Edge wasn't high enough on the ladder to get the right angle of the chair shot to hit the chair behind Christian's head rather than his head itself. Brutal move that is rough to get just right.
Mick Foley would be happy that you actually laughed at his joke.
1:46 could he still hear since some of the ear is still there
Yes. You can lose the entire ear on the outside and still hear because eardrums are inside your head
Thanks for a very good and detailed explanation❤
I had a concussion two years ago from getting tackled in soccer and I never recovered from it. It's crazy people can have this happen to them and get better.
Explains alot about my elbow, thanks Dr Mike
The cauliflower ear has nothing to do with WWE itself. Just because those guys were WWE wrestlers doesn't mean that's how they actually got it. Brock got his from MMA, Bruno got his from boxing.
I love watching these! You should totally react to equestrian injuries. I've seen some bad ones.
[3:56] I imagine an inguinal hernia diagnosis going something like this:
Patient: "Doc, I've got some serious pain in my ballbag."
Doctor: "Yep. That's because you've got guts in your nuts."
6:11 Is that a SUPRA!?😂
Tnx soo much doc, love your videos ❤❤
Dr Mike has the best reactions to this disgusting stuff
As a wrestling fan and a Dr. Mike fan, I really love this video 😄
At WrestleMania 39 at SoFi Stadium this year, we witnessed our fair share of injuries including Finn Balor getting his head stapled in the ring after a botched move with a ladder; and Shane McMahon tore his quad during his cameo appearance 😳
As someone who got a severe 2nd degree burn in their one eyed snake area from boiling water im impressed dude was still standing from having bubbling skin
LMFAOOOOOOOOO👁️🐍💀💀💀

You probably aren't going to read this but , a good incarcerated bowel metaphor would be to think of it like "a hose with a kink in it, the hose stops working/dies". ❤ much love to you I'm a new subscriber
4:14 my grandpa actually has an incarcerated bowel but he lives a healthy life and never had any problems
I have a lot of elbow and wrist issues due to working years at call centers. Lots of PT and just always being aware of how I’m sitting to try to avoid aggravating more issues.
7:19 Doctor Mike: That’s not *that* cool 😂
Happy Hanukkah Dr. Mike and all who are celebrating 😊🎉
Around 6:20, I'm pretty sure Kofi Kingston was born without those muscles instead of either steroid use or harmed throughout his career
the first injury at 0:31 my dad got it a while back from sitting and working alot on the desk. it took a while to recover and i think he still have it a way way less severe
0:45 bro got the spongebob elbow

I kinda wish Mike would look at non-WWE Wrestling spots/injuries mostly because of morbid curiosity because the stuff they do is sometimes much more dangerous than WWE
