  • Thanks for joining me on my second Q&A.
    Equipment used tonight:
    Gibson Les Paul R9 (2011)
    Cornell Romany 12 (EQ Cut engaged)
    No pedals, no computers, no audio interfaces. Just an iPhone placed a few inches from the amp’s grill cloth. Then imported to iMovie then uploaded to UA-cam. Simple as that.

    Thank you for sharing Paul! In regards to the multiple takes, I wouldn't stress out on that, not even a bit! Most players here on UA-cam record bucket loads of takes before they upload. Those that say they do it in one take, they're most likely not telling the truth. You play the most interesting and intricate things, no wonder it might take you a couple of tries. I actually appreciate that you take your time and make sure that your audience is getting something good but never stress yourself about this. Heck, I've had days where it took me 4 hours to come up with something for my silly videos and I can't dream of sounding as good as you lol.. Cheers!

    Very enjoyable & informative.
    In the early 80's our local Guitar shop arranged a 'free entry' workshop by Arlen Roth. There were about a dozen people there & he was fantastic. I remember him playing 'When a man loves a Woman' & sounding just like Roy Buchanan (....well worth a listen!).

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  3 роки тому +1

      Firstly, I liked your “Elvis / Chip Shop” joke from an earlier comment 🤣. Made me laugh out loud. As regards Arlen..... it’s funny, I read your comment as soon it came in (it’s now showing up as “edited”). Sorry if I’m now mentioning something you didn’t want mentioned, but yes, Arlen has often struck me as a little immodest.... I forgive him, because he’s a big hero from my childhood. But he does like to claim credit for some things..... rightly or wrongly. I’ve heard him claim credit for a couple of Knopfler techniques.... That said, what a wonderful player, and it was “When a man loves a woman” that first popped up on our radio - my Dad and I just stopped in our tracks, waiting for the DJ to tell us who this was🤣

    • @stevest3v3
      @stevest3v3 3 роки тому

      @@paulstaffordcook8799 The first part about Ali was true mind!........Yes, Arlen did claim Mark Knofler had pinched his style and then played 'When a man loves a Woman' sounding just like Roy Buchanan! but like you say everyone lifts techniques & influences. But he is undoubtedly a great guitar player and a forerunner to the great teachers on UA-cam like yourself. Thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge & experience.

    It sounded to me that you have heavier gauge strings on your Les Paul. I recently switched from D´Addario NYXL 10-46, to D´Addario Chromes 11-50 on my Les Paul Standard. Although I enjoy the smoothness of the Chromes, the response of the lower E string seems overly punchy. I am a fan of elevens. I am thinking about trying NYXL 11-49. I hesitate to go back to 10-46. Any suggestions? I think my LP came stock with nines, which I thought were too flimsy.

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  3 роки тому

      It’s funny, I’ve never tried Chromes before.... in fact, the more I think about it, I’m not a huge “experimenter” with strings, having always stuck to just normal nickel. So I’m probably not your best person for advice. My current feeling is that string type and gauge is just another potential rabbit hole. Once you’re happy with gauge, I reckon affordable nickel strings are fine. I like 11-49 for Gibsons and 10-46 for Fenders. 😀

      @@Fingertipsable Congratulations, they are lovely looking guitars without any shadow of doubt!
      Q. You mention arthritis, and many people suffer from this condition (including me) and strive to continue playing. As a guitar builder, do you share my experience that bigger sized necks are more comfortable for players with arthritis? (.........by the way this is the opposite of what I'd expect as I have small hands & always prefered slimmer necks).

      Steve, Thank you for the kind reply.
      No,the problem is not with the necks,my necks ate a Medium vintage C type.I simply cant bend my fingers ....bending is reduced about 50%.It started about 9 yesrs ago, really depressed me because I was also teaching guitar.
      Being a positive guy I completely changed my playing style.Instead of dexterity and speed I now started playing mostly with double stops up and down the neck.....my Students loved the new approach and I wouldnt change anything now.I love those double stops.
