ANOTHER great version of this tune was in the ‘90s with Dick Gaughan, the BBC; and quite a few folks from the States like Emmy Lou Harris, The McGarrigle Sisters Kate and Anna, the son of Kate, and fantastic dobro work by Jerry Douglas, Fiddles by Aly Bain and Jay Ungar. They really did the song proud; but this one here reminds me of a Turlough O’Carolan piece, just timeless and beautiful.
5:36 Alongside all those references, I’m hearing Gary Moore too - yes, he was a blues/rock/fusion maestro but I think he had that Celtic spirit deep in his soul …
I absolutely agree Derek. Some of Gary Moore’s playing was extremely Celtic. In fact your comment just put me in the mood to quickly re-watch the live UA-cam video of Moore and Gorham playing Black Rose. Just incredible. Emotional in fact 🙏

Hi Paul. Excellent video ! I have just been listening to Ian Bairnsons solo on Wuthering Heights Wow ! Any idea how i can get a similar sound with my 57 ri strat into my Boss Katana 100 1x12 mk 1. Thanks Tony UK
Hi Tony. Yes, just listened to Wuthering Heights to remind myself. What jumps out to me is that it’s not dissimilar to Clapton’s “woman tone”. Think “I Feel Free”. It’s fat, and it’s completely lacking any attack….. So if it was me…..: Crunch channel, Gain knob full up, amp EQs generally all at 12 o’clock, booster mod off. Select neck pickup on your Strat and then…. the secret sauce…. back your Strat’s tone knob to zero (or maybe 1 or 2). Voila…. Woman Tone! If it’s all too overdriven I’d try the amp’s Clean channel with some booster mod. But it’s the guitar’s tone pot that holds the secret. Hope that helps.
My favourite rendition of "Wild Mountain Thyme" is on the Long John Baldry album, Everything Stops for Tea. (Used to have on vinyl!) Elton John produced one side, and Rod Stewart the other, if memory serves. It's on UA-cam and worth a listen, I reckon. (Oh, and a happy home is a wonderful place! Enjoy. :)

Great question ZofoZofo! If I recall, I firstly balanced the Marshall’s Gain and Volume to be very clean, with no breakup. Then I dialed back the Middle on the amp for a more scooped sound. To the braes o' Balquhither,
Where the blae-berries grow
'Mang the bonnie Highland heather;
Where flie deer and the rae
Lightly bounding together,
Sport the lang summer day
On the braes o' Balquhither.
I will twine thee a bower,
By the clear siller fountain,
And I'll cover it o'er
Wi' the flowers o' the mountain;
I will range through the wilds,
And the deep glens sae dreary,
And return wi' their spoils.
To the bower o' my deary.
When the rude wintry win'
Idly raves round our dwelling,
And the roar of the linn
On the night breeze is swelling,
So merrily we'll sing,
As the storm rattles o'er us,
'Till the dear sheeling ring
Wi' the light lilting chorus.
Now the summer is in prime,
Wi' the flowers richly blooming,
And the wild mountain thyme
A' the moorlands perfuming;
To our dear native scenes
Let us journey together,
Where glad innocence reigns
'Mang the braes o' Balquhither.
