I think it's probably true that most guitar players are so introverted that they willingly give up casual friendships to spend more time with their instrument. Not enough hours in the day. You are indeed lucky that your wife selected you - most guitar players fall into the camp of "she knew I was a guitar player when she married me".
Dear Rachel, dear Paul, what a wonderful couple you are. Barely ever have I seen a video so personal. Thank you so much for sharing this and your awesome playing.
Sometimes we (guitar guys) forget that not everyone in the house likes the same amount of input from our playing....You are a lucky man to have such a supportive partner..... Love your videos. Thanks.
Paul, I am in a very similar situation with the family. Understanding wife who i love dearly and no friends. Like you i can be social just dont have the need for the friends thing. My wife is the only friend i need and my time with my music.. Love your channel Paul. Keep it up my man!
I appreciate this video so much. It addresses the reality of being a reliable musician and a responsible adult. It's essential that viewers accept the fact although these are this gentleman's opinions and perspectives, they were formed from HIS LIFE EXPERIENCES. Whatever applies to each viewer will be slightly different. The fact that he found it necessary to make this video says alot about the person he is. Personally, I REALLY LIKE his playing. Now I also admire the man.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Actually, when I stated that I "really liked" your playing, it was a gross understatement. The feelings that you tastefully insert into every note you play is (in my personal opinion) quite inspirational! You seem to have found the key that unlocks the most opportune moment to shift between playing cleanly and adding just the right amount of grit and grime. Often times within the same passage. But amazingly, you have accomplished all this while retaining your own individual sound. Your vids are a joy. Oh, yeah... I dig how you incorporate the Freq out pedal into the mix. Well done, Brother!
Great progression, lovely playing, great guitar, lovely to see Rachel again. Clearly one of the most patient women on Earth. No really, there's a wonderful vibe between you that is so recognisable to someone like me that has a similar relationship (the best). I dont have friends either, my wife is my friend and I don't go out more than once or twice a year.A solo trip for a gig or a guitar 'safari' just to scratch the itch.
Rediscovered your channel in my feed. My son picked up the guitar two years ago and I’m fortunate that we get to spend a lot time together through school music ensembles, lessons, camps, jamming, and most importantly guitar hunting. Lol. I’m lucky as well with an understanding guitar widow and my friends are guitars. Your content is refreshing, so keep it up!
LOL. Like watching a description of my life. Minus work as I am retired and the kids are grown and gone. But apart from that, my focus in life is spending time with my wife and my guitars. My friend is my wife. Always has been that way. We are fortunate that we encourage each other in activities that give us purpose. Yes the repetitive playing of phrases in a song can be annoying, but that is what doors and earphones are for. I do not take exception to the words, “hon, can you just turn it down a wee bit.”? It’s right up there with “until death do we part”.😊 Great playing Paul and absolutely charming sharing something so personal. Cheers to you and Rachel.
This was great! I can totally relate....I am blessed to have a pretty supportive wife who puts up with my endless youtube guitar videos, endless guitar playing, endless gear buying/selling/trading.....I also make videos so I can totally relate. Only difference between you and I is my wife would never come on a video lol....so big thumbs up to your wife for coming on and also supporing your passion! I also just discovered Jack Ruch! Paul, I'm nearly 35 and still single. I too am a "weirdo" (as you say). I do have friends, but my guitars are my best friends. I tell them everything. I can relate to a lot of what you say here! Glad you are able to balance your creative side with a family life. Yikes, there might be hope for me yet.
Yeah...you're selling yourself short. You're a lot better than you admit. I'm with you on the "no friends" thing. I like being home with my various projects, musical, artistic, writing, building, improving my home environment; stuff that I can't do if I'm out with friends. Lucky me my wife is the same way so we have all the friendship we can use just between us...and, you know, 2 dogs and 8 cats. Don't need no more friends than the ones I live with.
Rachel, great to see you on the channel again.👌 As a matter of appreciation, it's nice to see genuine understanding, especially when you have those random tunes running around in your head.😂 It's very obvious that there have been many conversations over the years to have such understanding. Many well-known performers are introverts and cope by developing personas that they can express themselves through. Think Bowie, Hendrix, Prince, Dylan, Gaga, the list goes on. I play guitar fairly well and so people assume I like to perform and entertain large groups of people. To me that is suffering. I’ve done it, can do it, and would dread doing it some more. I’m an introvert and process the world from within and not through others (in general). I run a successful little global consultancy and so consider myself a high performance introvert. I’m good yes, but absolutely exhausted from each “performance”. Paul your video reminds me that it’s ok to be this way, and in fact may be the true path of the artist, to create something beautiful for its own sake and the sake of its creator. And to ultimately be comfortable with oneself, alone in a room, with nothing more than this piece of wood with six ropes attached to it (as Jan Akkerman once called the guitar). Thanks for connecting with all of us. Tom
Tom, I really enjoyed reading your comment. It’s kinda made me reflect on what my guitar playing means to me. It’s funny, we’re all different. Some of us introverts, some mad show offs…. But at the centre of it, there’s the simple pleasure of being able to play our guitars. Cheers Tom
It would seem, you and Rachael are both blessed to have each other. Interesting to know you have a teenage son, and I hope he has a great relationship with his grandfather, as I did. Rachael is lovely and your dad is super cool - thanks for the heartfelt playing...so tasteful for us to emulate! Beautiful guitar and musicality we've come to expect from you. Thank you, kindly!

Divorce... no doubt but on the bright side, because she got the house, car, kids, dog and bank account, you can totally play lots under your new home... a bridge. That intro sounded really good.
Needed some jazzy walk-up, Paul, and I thought 'I know just the lad' and went to your tips and tricks in A vid and nicked that thing you'd nicked off Robben Ford. And that fancy V substitution. You make this stuff very accessible.. Enjoyed this video very much too. Thanks to you both. .
beautiful intro. love the metronome reminding us of your impeccable time and pocket brother! and your lovely wife seems suer cool. you’re a lucky man…ps i don’t have any real friends either-i play all my guitars and im raising my own 16 yr old son alone. I have a very cool sometime-GF who, if we do make things “official” i know she will always respect my guitar time. 👊😊
New comment on an old video? That's me 😅 CAN CONFIRM - Fender Vintera Jags (at least mine) are really nice sounding and easy playing guitars. My immediate mods were Hipshot staggered locking tuners a Mastery trem, and Tusq saddles. Everything else is stock. (12-54 rounds in Eb) Wonderful tone for the money 😊😊
Nothing more beautiful than a supportive wife. Nothing passive aggressive...just a true believer in you, your number one supporter!😊 God luv ya's! (First time viewer btw - you totally blew my hair back with your tasteful jazz lines in the intro improv! 😲 Very tasty!👍)
Yes, it's the common struggle to balance our work, earning money, and take time with family and friends and other things. Your wife seems lovely and your videos here are always interesting, thank you
I'm exactly the same on the friends subject haha I just cannot be bothered keeping in touch with loads of people and visiting them etc etc people get on my nerves .....good video u two
Love the music Paul. I too am lucky to have a lovely wife that lets, no encourages, me to do my own stuff but it's a 2-way street. She has her own hobbies and interests and I am happy that she pursues them with passion. We are lucky to live in a big house (not bragging, houses just are bigger in the US cos there's (a bit) more space here) where we have our own spaces; man cave, she shed, so we can go to our places and do our own thing. It's like the words of the Sting song; if you love somebody, set them free. Go in peace Paul.
I’m smiling reading your words Ted. And a little jealous of the space you have. Here in the UK we’re more used to houses the size of postage stamps 🤣. Just look at the size of my little guitar room 😂. But jokes aside, yeah, it sounds like a nice situation you have there. Have a great weekend 🍻
Great video Paul. I like to do the hotel and guitar shop thing too, the last time for me was Andertons. You didn’t say which the third shop was, I’m guessing Windows, Knopfler’s old hang out.
No way, was that the shop on that Mark Knopfler documentary? That WAS the third shop I went to - JG Windows in Central Arcade. Man, I’m now very glad I popped in. I went upstairs and played a road worn Vintera Tele.
That’s the one. The last time I was in Newcastle I went to PMT first. Was browsing when someone behind me said “Excuse me, can I get that guitar there please?” It was Dagan. Anyway I bought a cheap Epiphone SG then went looking for something to eat. Wandering around I noticed the arcade and thought that’s where JG Windows is. As I had a guitar from another shop I didn’t feel like going in so I adopted Mr Knopflers schoolboy approach of gazing into the window at a Strat.
I totally get the no/minimal friends thing. I don't desire it at all. I have started a monthly zoom with my best friend from HS, though, so we can play guitar together. We live 24hrs apart, so can't meet up in person very easily. My wife and daughter definitely like to have my attention more than the guitars, though.
Hi to you and your lovely wife. 29 years I've been married, she came to see the band I was in, and that was it. She calls my guitars "my other women" jokingly, I guess I'm lucky I get at least an hour or 2 a day to play/practice/write/ record.. As she says, "it's part of me," she loves hearing me playing at home and supports whatever band I've played in, gigs I've played. At least I'm not down the pub, head in an xbox or sha**ing around, instead I'm spending valuable time doing what I love. The trick is when you're not playing, devote as much attention to her as you do to your guitar, 😅 Liked and subbed.
I don't have frineds either, I quite never know someone like me in that sense so it's curious to me, I had a girlfriend that said "play the guitar while I'm not with you" so that wasn't that fun considering she came to my house and stay for 5 to 7 days, luckily she's my ex now and I'm alone by choice and play whenever the heck I want to, you're very lucky to found your wife, she seems so nice as much as you, cheers and keep at it, regards from Argentina
Thank you John, I’m smiling reading your words. It sounds like you’re in a good situation at this point. Well I wish you all the best my friend, and hope you have many happy hours practicing ahead of you. 🍻
So this is what Billy No-Mates is like :) Great video Paul, and good luck to you and your lovely wife and son.. (spend time talking to your son, it's a very tricky age)
So nice to hear someone say that they don’t have friends, don’t need friends and their wife is their friend and that’s all you need. Your wife and your guitars! Same! Well, my other half, not your wife haha People often judge us for having no friends or not needing them. Discovered your channel today and love your style, man xx
Songs take Time, Tom Petty and Song that Became the Waiting was a never ending Evolution, it started with One Riff he played for days if not weeks before a 2nd riff and track came to Him and He told how it seemed everyone Hated him playing that same Riff, but he hung on, because he had something special, so special he wouldn't Rush it or compromise the Vision and Sound in his head and eventually That Song he worked on day after day for Months was" The Waiting""
Some really nice playing there….I pinched lots of ideas and enjoyed the link. It’s true….having an understanding wife is everything….she’s put up with my noodling for nearly 53 years! 👍🍷🎸
Hi Paul, I have to ask, where did you get the Cornell T-shirt? They're not on their website. I also have the Romany 12 - it's my 'daily driver'. Cornell were very helpful to me recently when my '12' needed a service. So I'd like to show them some love in return. Cheers.
Yes, I got an email totally out the blue, from Denis Cornell. He mentioned that prospective purchasers of Cornell Amps sometimes mention my name and “Paul, would you like a Cornell T-shirt?”. So I said I’d be delighted! I can only assume he might be gearing up to have some merch at some point….
I too have problems remembering just how old my four kids are, and they're all over twenty one now Paul. Don't worry it's natural for all fathers to have this problem 🤣🤣🤣.
Thank you Imli, appreciated. Actually, despite being in a covers band from 1991 to 2006, there’s no footage of us on the web. I wish there was, because we had some great nights.
Great guitar as usual. Nice to hear from your wife. I found the guitar channel ‘Things I learned from Barry Harris’ to be very helpful when it comes to understanding diminished and it’s relationship to Harmony.
Hi Paul....I can relate to the not having friends thing....a few years ago I started going out with workmates...I felt that it was the right "normal " thing to do.......basically though it boiled down to going to pubs getting drunk with people i had very little in common with......then one night I realised I had very little in common with any of them....they liked CSI Miami...I liked Wallander...they liked X factor dancing on ice in a jungle...I liked miles davis and The Who.......they liked football....I found all sports boring...they read Heat magazine and Nuts ...I read books on musicians and guitars (oh and WW2 and serial killers..lol)....quite frankly i realised the time spent with them i could be spending with my wife...4 cats ..(my kids have all left home) . Or in my musicroom...playing guitar or listening to cds.....so I stopped going...now I even decline the works Xmas Dinner...I work 40 hours a week so my free time is precious....I have no male (or female apart from my wife) freinds...I don't feel I'm missing out...quite the contrary.....I'm like you ...friendly...nice...not socially awkward....but I don't need freinds... I think that some people who have no hobby or passion..or real interests in life do feel the need to go out...I cannot blame them for been bored stuck at home with nothing to do other than mainstream entertainment......but how could I get bored...with 13 guitars...4 amps...effects units..guitars synth...recording gear...1000s CDS...100s DVDSand boxsets...100s of books. ..also...to get good at guitar takes practice... I remember eddie van halen saying how as a teenager from 14-18 he'd sit in his bedroom with nothing but his guitar...pack of cigarettes 6 pack of beer and play....that one of the reasons (apart from him been a genius) how he got so good .. there was a advert in one of those 1980s guitar magazines I used to buy (I forget the product it was advertising)...but it depicted a musician walking out onstage to a venue full of fans...and it said..."while others partied....you stayed at home and practised....but...now its your turn to party" .. actually I have still got 10 cardboard boxes full of guitar magazines in a cupboard in my music room/ mancave....from above 1984 to 2004....if I ever got bored I could dig them out to look at....ahhh...all those adverts for Westone guitars (actually I still own a Westone thunder 1A bass...and it a fine instrument made in a now legendary Japanese factory)....peavey bandit...session and gorilla amps...aria pro and marlin guitars....Ebows (again I still own mine)....I reading the classified ads at the back of UK magazine Guitarist seeing Gibson les Paul standard for sale £400....Phil hilbourne...neville Martin... American magazines with all those poodle haired guys posing with pointy headstock guitars fretting impossible looking alan holdsworth type chord ...(yeah I too own a old 80s pointy headstock floyd Rose BB rich gunslinger and its still despite looking awful and fine guitar....in fact I feel almost guilty playing it not because it looks so cheesy...that said I think it looks kinda cool as it super tatty looking after decades of abuse.. and screams...RATT..Motley..Warrent crue...poison....Tony mcalpine...Brad gillies.. George Lynch...no...its because its so easy to play and comfortable...it almost plays its self and makes you sound better than you are...it puts up no fight...never goes out of tune....the action is so low.....lol
@@paulstaffordcook8799 And I’m with you. Also not a big “friends guy”. Work, time with my wife and family and my music is about all I need to be happy. Thanks (to you and the Mrs.) for a great video.

You are so fortunate to have such a sweet, understanding wife. You two make a wonderful couple. I can't help wondering why you are not playing out professionally. Have you ever considered it or is it just not in the cards for you?
Thank you man, I appreciate your words. As regards playing out…. I used to be in a covers band from ‘91 to 2006 and it was a fantastic experience. However I’m now “too old”, I’m set in my ways and deeply in my comfort zone. So I’m quite happy just doing it on UA-cam. I do look back on those days fondly though 😊

beautiful intro. love the metronome reminding us of your impeccable time and pocket brother! and your lovely wife seems suer cool. you’re a lucky man…ps i don’t have any real friends either-i play all my guitars and im raising my own 16 yr old son alone. I have a very cool sometime-GF who, if we do make things “official” i know she will always respect my guitar time.
👊😊
Thanks Stagefrite. Cheers mate
New comment on an old video? That's me 😅
CAN CONFIRM - Fender Vintera Jags (at least mine) are really nice sounding and easy playing guitars. My immediate mods were Hipshot staggered locking tuners a Mastery trem, and Tusq saddles. Everything else is stock. (12-54 rounds in Eb)
Wonderful tone for the money 😊😊
Hints of Stormy Monday in that chord progression. Nice playing as always, Paul.
Thanks for listening, appreciated.
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing this Paul and Rachel, I'm liking the hotel/2 glasses of wine/magazine idea!
Thanks Ben. And yes, I can TOTALLY recommend the wine / hotel / magazine thing 🤣🍻
Beautiful playing. Love Jack Ruch too and have learnt more from him in the last two years than I did in the previous ten
Such an amazing video. Every single bit of this. Thank you. And thank you Rachel.
Nothing more beautiful than a supportive wife. Nothing passive aggressive...just a true believer in you, your number one supporter!😊
God luv ya's!
(First time viewer btw - you totally blew my hair back with your tasteful jazz lines in the intro improv! 😲 Very tasty!👍)
Thank you. It’s all a balance and has taken a while to get to this point. 👍🏼🙏🏽
Thank you Luey Sixty-six, cheers to you 🍻
Great Channel ...thanks . !
Thank you Michael 👍
Great episode!
Wonderful! So glad I finished my rough day listening to your music. You're the man! God bless🤘
What a lovely comment, thank you Moriel 🍻
My guitar was my best friend from age 7...all my life till I found my other half at 35...now I have two best friends....they're all I need...😎🎸❤️
I can relate to that! Cheers Johnny
Yes, it's the common struggle to balance our work, earning money, and take time with family and friends and other things. Your wife seems lovely and your videos here are always interesting, thank you
Thank you Havanorange, I appreciate that 🍻
You're a lucky man...Best of 3 loves..your wife, children and music....most of which are understanding
I appreciate that, cheers Paul
Mate! If Les Paul was still with us, he’d be well impressed with your use of his creation!
Beautiful work
👍🇦🇺
love this channel thanks again Paul - keeping it proudly weird like yourself
Thank you Timothy 🍻
I'm exactly the same on the friends subject haha I just cannot be bothered keeping in touch with loads of people and visiting them etc etc people get on my nerves .....good video u two
Thank you Teddy! Cheers mate.
Beautiful...great touch and feel. The P90's sound wonderful.
Thanks Derrick 👍
Dang! That blues was smokin’!
Wha..beautiful phrasing and tone
Thanks man, appreciated 🍻
Hi to you and your lovely wife.
29 years I've been married, she came to see the band I was in, and that was it.
She calls my guitars "my other women" jokingly, I guess I'm lucky I get at least an hour or 2 a day to play/practice/write/ record..
As she says, "it's part of me," she loves hearing me playing at home and supports whatever band I've played in, gigs I've played.
At least I'm not down the pub, head in an xbox or sha**ing around, instead I'm spending valuable time doing what I love.
The trick is when you're not playing, devote as much attention to her as you do to your guitar, 😅
Liked and subbed.
Thank you Rob, I’m smiling reading your words 😊🍻
Paul, you play like an Angel, and your wife is a real Angel from heaven above. Beautiful couple together.
Well thank you MPNNag, appreciated 👍
Your phrasing and emotion is brilliant.
Thank you Tony 🍻
I'd say you have 21k friends, Paul. God bless you and your family.
Good point, thank you Nicky 👍
Ha!! Good luck! Guitar played a central role in both of my divorces. But remember, Love is all that matters.
Great playing!!! Thank you!
Thanks Robhead. So far we’re good, but yes it’s a careful line we walk 🤣
Very nice! Paul Your videos always inspires me to play more. Thank you. Also it was nice to meet your Wife she's cool.
Thank you Scott 😊
So this is what Billy No-Mates is like :) Great video Paul, and good luck to you and your lovely wife and son.. (spend time talking to your son, it's a very tricky age)
Thanks Eoin, I’m glad you liked the vid. And yes, you’re right about sons at 15 / 16. Cheers
I was lucky enough to divorce my wife 13 years ago and have never looked back.
Paul's a stand-out classy guitarist, some exquisite playing there. And up to a couple of days ago I'd never heard of him, shame on me!
Well thank you gf301, I appreciate that. 👍
Nice playing my friend.i told my wife long ago .my guitar first you second.😂😂😂
You are blessed with a lovely and truly understanding bride! (as am I ... takes one to know one?!?) Keep up the great videos ... we need them
Thank you Michael, cheers 🍻
That thumbnail and title 😂😂😂
This was a real special video Paul, thanks to you and your lovely wife ❤️
Glad you liked it. Cheers malarkey 🍻👍
Don't FRET about it Paul.
I see what you did there 😉. Cheers Paul
Nicely done Paul! Your playing always inspires me. You have a friend in Arizona!
Well thank you Douglas, I’ll pop round this evening and we’ll hang out 🤣. Cheers my friend, glad you enjoyed the vid 🍻
So nice to hear someone say that they don’t have friends, don’t need friends and their wife is their friend and that’s all you need. Your wife and your guitars! Same! Well, my other half, not your wife haha People often judge us for having no friends or not needing them. Discovered your channel today and love your style, man xx
Well thank you Kierri, I’m delighted you like my wee UA-cam channel. Have a great weekend 🍻😊
Great playing!
Thanks Ian
Some really nice playing there….I pinched lots of ideas and enjoyed the link. It’s true….having an understanding wife is everything….she’s put up with my noodling for nearly 53 years! 👍🍷🎸
Cheers Emlyn
Ok. I’ll be your friend. It’ll be like virtual pen pals 😊 for peeps that enjoy the magic when the 100th take over several months is finally in time.
@@paulstaffordcook8799. Next time I get over to Southend I'll drop your name! Cheers Paul.
I too have problems remembering just how old my four kids are, and they're all over twenty one now Paul. Don't worry it's natural for all fathers to have this problem 🤣🤣🤣.
If we think of their age in intervals we remember. I've got a Major 23 & a minor 21 😆
Love it 🤣.
Sir, I'd love to see you playing on stage can you suggest any video link ?😊
Big shout out to your lovely family ❤
Thank you… 👋🏼👋🏼
Thank you Imli, appreciated. Actually, despite being in a covers band from 1991 to 2006, there’s no footage of us on the web. I wish there was, because we had some great nights.
0:12 Typical ii-V7 line. I thought I came up with it myself but no.
We are lucky Paul, your lovely wife is understanding like my own. The Goldtop is lovely too.
Thanks Graeme 😊
Great guitar as usual. Nice to hear from your wife. I found the guitar channel ‘Things I learned from Barry Harris’ to be very helpful when it comes to understanding diminished and it’s relationship to Harmony.
Brilliant!
Thank you Ben 👍
Thank you Paul, I’m smiling reading your comment, and I can relate!
Absolute 🔥🔥🔥 brother.
Thanks man 🍻👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 And I’m with you. Also not a big “friends guy”. Work, time with my wife and family and my music is about all I need to be happy. Thanks (to you and the Mrs.) for a great video.
Hey Paul ,your best friend is sitting next to you.Your a lucky man.
Thank you Dylan 👍
Top video bud, on divorce question I think I noticed Rachel checking out her half of the guitar stable. 😂😂😂. Keep them coming. 🏴👍👍👍🥃Respect to you mate.
