  • My other birthday guitar. It's lovely :-)
    As you get older time becomes even more of an illusion. When I talk about my old '57 Junior being 50 years old I mean of course 62 years old. Nearly as old as me...Hahahahaa

    Awesome playing and video, Paul. Love the Junior and that CONN tuner in the back! Cheers from America.

      Thanks so much for those very kind words. Much appreciated I assure you.
      Having seen so many bands (since probably '67) with a Conn Strobotuner somewhere on or near the stage I decided in the '90s that it was time to get one and then when I searched "Conn" all that came up was Peterson so I ended up buying a Peterson V-Sam which I have to this day and which meant I could never go back from the luxury and accuracy of strobe tuning. The tuner you can see is actually a Peterson Stomp Classic which I bought specifically because it looks like the Conn though only half the size :-)
      I hope your bit of America is cool, calm and safe and cheers to you too.

      I'm glad I'm getting through loud and clear and that you're getting something from it.
      I've missed my '57 Junior since I had to sell it when I was out of work and I was very happy to see Gibson make this guitar available as part of their 'regular' range. There are some finishing issues (with the nut mainly) but nothing serious and I have decided that I really love this guitar....
      Try before you buy is always sensible but if Juniors are your thing I'd say these are good ones and you shouldn't be disappointed.
      Thanks for dropping by :-)

    I feel sorry for the people that quit this video before the 7:00 minute mark. Nice playing Paul! I’m agonizing right now between this one, and the LP special which has two P-90’s. Your not making my decision any easier. 😎 From one old timer to another, keep on playin!

      Thanks for sticking with it PapaC.... Much appreciated. Personally I find no switch and just two controls a bit of a luxury. Because I started on a Stratocaster, that is the system that makes most sense to me and balancing two different volumes (like a Gretsch or two pup Gibson) is something I have to approach intellectually rather than intuitively. All of that is, of course, completely irrelevant to your choice. I'm sure you'll love whatever you decide to go for. They are sweet guitars :-)

    Happy Birthday Paul .... has an authentic 50's sound to it. The vintage Analog Guitars are the best ... The guitarists of the future will see these in a museum & never get to hold one . My Uncle has a 1959 Gibson V and he guards it with his life.. lol .. You scored a guitar from 1957 ... Your a lucky man paul. :-) Happy Birthday again .... All the best sir ... Be safe ... God Bless

      I actually had a 1957 Junior AND a '62 Junior and had to sell 'em both when I was out of work. This is brand new but it's a goodun. I like it very much.

      Thanks very much Tim. I appreciate it. I saw a notification for your comment before you edited, which I imagine you did to be polite and not tell me I'm wrong about PRS...Hahahahahahaha. I was very much into PRS and had a beautiful Custom 22 in 1996. What I should have done is what PRS themselves ended up doing and changed the rotary switch for a 'sensible' 3 way toggle. I am not at all anti PRS but was using the example purely to justify buying myself two guitars for my birthday. Thanks again for dropping by and for the kind words :-)

    • @TimGuitarcouk
      @TimGuitarcouk 4 роки тому +1

      Paul McCaffrey I totally get it. I am a bit evangelical about PRS since I got mine, but I 100% agree re that stupid 5 way rotary switch they used to have, which incidentally inhibited the pickups output by around 20%, which is why the old PRS pickups often sounded so shrill; Paul always overwound his P/U’s to compensate. Apparently Barry, the former tech at Machinehead in Hitchin discovered the problem with the five way and Paul reed Smith was horrified when he found out. The electronics were changed almost immediately. He has got them nailed, now though. Your LP Jr is lovely, by the way.

    • @PaulMcCaffreyfmac
      @PaulMcCaffreyfmac  4 роки тому

      I know Brinsley and Charlie in Chandlers workshop were putting toggle switches in PRSs from very early on. They are great guitars for sure but the only one that might tempt me now would be a Hollowbody because I'm all for 5lb guitars with my back...Hahahaha
      For all Gibsons' problems - and many of them are ongoing - it is great that they have a nice LP Jnr and SG Jnr in the regular range without having to pay Historic or Custom Shop prices and it remains undeniably true that both come in together at less than a McCarty.
      I've just confirmed online that you did indeed work at Guitarist so you may have played my Custom 22. It was reviewed in Guitarist in (I think) Oct 1996 and I bought it from Chandlers. I even remember the serial number was 6 26246. It went for funds to pay bills and live......ah me :-)

    • @TimGuitarcouk
      @TimGuitarcouk 4 роки тому +1

      Paul McCaffrey Yes, I really did work at Guitarist magazine, and afterwards I worked for Fender and Peavey. I am genuine. Lol. I still have a great fondness for Gibson guitars but since I became I PRS owner I have found a guitar that fits me and suits me. Saying that, I love the LP Jr, the natural resonance that yours has is tangible, even on tiny speakers. I am very tempted to get one after hearing yours.

      The perils of the written word...Hahahahaha! I said "confirmed" not because I ever doubted your realness but because I couldn't remember which mag it was - whether you were one of the Croydon lot or one of the Bath lot :-)
      You should definitely try one of these Juniors whether you buy or not. I am quite looking forward to it being an even better guitar in a year. It has that lively feel that implies that it will only get livelier and better

      The Juniors are both great and to be honest, easier on the nerves to own compared to old ones, in terms of worrying about originality and damage and all that mallarkey (though I am trying not to bash 'em up anyway...Hahahahaha). I hope you're around again more regularly though to be fair if you have real world playing to do then why wouldn't you :-), Have a great Christmas if I don't see you before then.

      Hello again 😊
      I try to buy stuff I like and if I get it wrong then not get too stressed out about losing money if I sell it. I always knew I'd love this and the SG Jnr. If you are at all interested to see the old guitars that these two replaced then you can search 1962 Les Paul Junior and/or 1957 Les Paul Junior to see the one I had to sell. To be honest the new ones are as good, and in 10 years will be even better than they are now.

    I wonder if a Seymour Duncan antiquity P90 would bring it closer to the 57 you had. I know the antiquity uses alnico 2 magnets like the original 50s P90s. I know Gibson uses alnico 5 in most of their modern P90s. Ps thank you for the videos they have truly been medicine to me today. As my heart has been broken over selling my original 57 lp jr

    • @PaulMcCaffreyfmac
      @PaulMcCaffreyfmac  4 роки тому +1

      To be honest I doubt I will be changing the pickup on this guitar. The output is about right (a bit louder than a PAF) and to be honest I think it would just lead to disappointment trying to make one guitar sound like another. This new one is lighter and brighter than my '57 but I am not playing through the same amp as I was then so who knows why that might be. I haven't played lots of old Juniors but they are all different anyway, so loving the look of this I am happy to stick with the electrics and play it in for a few years :-)
      I'm glad you are finding something here to enjoy and I very much appreciate you taking the time and trouble to say so. Thank you

      I'm not sure that anyone who can answer your question will see it here. You probably need to e-mail Gibson I would think, or talk to a big dealer who has lots of these guitars pass through their hands.
      I rather like the neck on this and though I would like everything lighter at my age, this is actually less of a handfull than my old, original '57 Junior.
      You might try a Fender Noventa Tele. Not the same sound but in the same ballpark, lighter and very 'vibey'. Slightly shallower neck profile too.

      I'm not sure what you mean by "fully finished". The finish on the Junors is in my opinion at least as good as the Studios and some might say better because they are polished and not satin.They both come with proper brown hard cases. I like single pickup guitars and for me personall I couldn't justify the saving I'd get with a Studio for a guitar I don't want.

    Hi Paul, I have to admit, eyeing the Junior for a while, and seeing you play that Jr., helped me make up my mind to buy one, and I am so glad I did (also got the Gibson Special (soapbar P90) TV Yellow, I am totally hooked on P90's. Do you have a particular pedal that you like to use with the Junior, and what settings for both amp and pedal do you use (might be worth doing a video on the topic) I know I would appreciate one.

      Thanks so much Mike, for the very kind words. I'm sure you'll love the guitars. P90s could have been designed to please after all.
      My amp is based on a tweed Deluxe and has a volume control and a tone control that goes to 12. I play it much quieter than it would like and set the tone anywhere between 4 and 8 depending on what I'm hearing on any given day. I like pedals that are touch and volume sensitive like the Box of Rock, Way Huge Drive, Blackstone Appliances MOSFET Drive, Gain Changer, OCD and wotnot. On the other hand I also enjoy a blast with a Big Muff from time to time. I would tend not to make distinctions between pedals as being suitable for one type of guitar rather than another. I guess the point is, if I did try to make a video it would be different every day I did it :-)
      You'll gather from all this waffle that I am trying to avoid any firm recommendations about pedals or settings. Trust yourself. It makes by far the most sense to trust yourself 👍

    Question, not sure anyone asked you this before but what’s the difference between a new Gibson Les Paul Jr 2019/ 2020 model and a 1958 version? The one Leslie West used during the early 70s. I’m planing on getting them and I hope I won’t be disappointed, cause the Jr has this really unique gritty warm tone and boy it turned me on.

    • @PaulMcCaffreyfmac
      @PaulMcCaffreyfmac  4 роки тому +2

      Sorry to be late responding but I got no notification from youtube that your comment was here and only found it right now by chance.
      By '58 the Junior was double cutaway so Leslie West would have played an earlier one. If you look back on my channel you can see and hear a '57 Junior I used to own so I can compare this one with that. The new one is a bit lighter which is nice. The old one was more resonant and the colour had faded a little so the middle was very yellow which I personally like. They are different but it is perfectly possible that someone could prefer the new one to the old one. I think the old one sounded better but I don't have it anymore so there's no point in worrying about it. The new ones are nice to play with nice necks and a good punchy pickup and I'm sure will get better the more they're played.
      I saw Mountain in (I think) 1970 at The Lyceum Ballroom here in London and Leslie West was playing through an incredibly loud SUNN set-up with 5 big cabs and two what I believe were SUNN P.A. amps so I think chasing his sound could be a lifetime's work but the guitar is a good start and a nice thing in its own right.

      The guitar is the same size as a standard but without the maple top and the P90 pickup is single coil so has some of the bite of a Fender pup while being much louder

      In 1953 Bill Haley's Comets turned into a rock & roll band and their lead guitarists usually played Les Paul. And let's not forget all the Chicago and New Orleans blues musicians (from Muddy Waters to Fats Domino). The jam with the backing track reminded me in sound a little bit on Albert Collins. You'd need to talk to a US dealer on that one I'm afraid. I have never really understood the whole map thing and how discounting works. They would also be the folk to talk to about Gibson prices which I don't make a point of following. If I could have paid less I would have been happy but I wanted it enough to pay the asking price. If I ever need to sell it and lose money, that's bearable.

If you look at where they placed the pickup closer to the bridge on the Les Paul Jr. that could be part of it why it is brighter and of course the body shape. The pickup on the SG jr has more space between the pickup and bridge. I have heard people say before that SG's seem to have a more pronounced midrange wich I find to be true....maybe. lol Depends but it's true with the 2 I have. It is a perfectly reasonable question and though it feels better to be able to say "I have a 1957 Junior" rather than a new one, it is actually very close. The old neck was a bit fatter which I prefer but the new one is marginally lighter which my back prefers.
      Gibson's final finishing is never the best and I would say with five years playing and one pro set-up from a decent tech you'd have a really good guitar almost indistiguishably close to the old one playing-wise.
      I think it would be reasonable to say that my new one and my old one are as similar as two old Juniors might be after fifty years playing by different people.

      It does but no more than the '57 I used to own did. To be honest I think that is just a function of all PRS guitars (even SEs) being basically more carefully made than Gibsons but that has always been the case. It seems unlikely that it would wear so that the problem got worse and as long as the tuning and intonation are stable showing no movement under tension then I wouldn't worry. I guess you could make packing washers out of business cards or something but they would compress over time and make things less stable. You might be able to do something with razor blades but I for one don't have a way of safely cutting razor blades at home. I know it can be difficult once you've noticed something like this but I genuinely wouldn't worry. If you are worried then I would e-mail Gibson. They aren't particularly quick to reply but they shoud do so eventually and can give you the official company line. If they say it shouldn't tip then please let me know :-)
