Hey Paul - loved the intro. I'll get my own 335 one of these days! My favorite overdrive has become the Nobels ODR-1 recommended by Tom Bukovac. It's very transparent. Basically sounds like my Deluxe Reverb at volume 6-7 when I'm really playing at 2-3. They are also cheap as far as pedals go. Thanks for the video.
Thanks David! Yeah, I’ve not tried the Nobles yet... although you’re right, they very popular among session players, especially in Nashville. Cheers for watching 👍
I’ve got so many videos to catch up on Paul but I thought I’d start with this. Plenty of great stuff and interesting thoughts to get my through my work day. Thanks again mate! Went back to the moon dance video today - such a PSC classic🤘🏼
Thanks F MK! And it makes me smile to see you revisit my Moondance video.... back to where it pretty much all started 🤣. Nearly 10k subs, thanks to good folks like you. Cheers!
Paul, I agree with you about the shark fins! I’ve been using them too for years. The red ones are too thin but the white 42 and 53 are the bees knees. I find they’re hard to get now though. Love your 335 tone. 😊👍
I have to buy the tone city sweet cream, just watched a review on it and ive heard you go on about it a few times and heard you play it, so that is getting purchased once its back in stock!!
One thing I regret is not having paid attention to the old guitar my Mother handled me when I was 17... now I have like 28 years to catch up ... belive me I'm trying hard... thanks Paul nice tones as allways, simple (though not humble) rig!
Another great video Paul well done. On your last point, I agree with you. Playing in a band (or duo as it was for me) does harden your performances. You learn to plough on through mistakes, which everyone makes of course, even the pro's, but the better you get the easier it is to conceal them. There are other considerations too as it also depends on the ability of individual members of your band. Most of us don't get to play live with great players like TOTO etc, so there are compromises. I have learned a more technical side to playing whilst at home, playing to a metronome is more difficult than playing with an average drummer ! Playing live has benefits that will put you in good stead, but improving at home will make your live performances better, if of course that's what you want. Thanks again Paul and I'm glad you got your plant under control ha ha !!
Have you tried a treble bleed circuit? It's supposed to allow the clean and clear tones as you turn down the tone without mudding out. Seems a lot of pro level players use them. Phil McKnight covers it on his channel and shows the details. You might ask Bare Knuckle what they think, perhaps it's already part of their pot. I have a 500k tone pot (I forget what brand) on my Epiphone Les Paul with Seymour Duncan Invaders and it definitely makes a difference. I am considering a tone bleed, but those pick-ups are so hot that I'm not sure how well that would work. I think that P90 will sound pretty smooth with the 500k. I guess you will soon find out. You will have to give a review when you get it done. Curious to know what you think. Love the tunes man, we all snag sounds from somewhere and Tom actually says to try it out and see what you think, he just wants us to enjoy playing. For me, swapping ideas is what it's all about.
Alrighty there big yin! I love the sound of my vox ac15c1 on the edge of break up with the guitar volume at 8, then volume at 10 for take off! I do use pedals but for me nothing beats the sound of a valve amps breakup!! I bought a proco rat 2 for my vox last week based on its supose to be one of the best pedals for a vox, i can report it sounds epic, does everything from boost to od to distortion and does a lovely fuzz and i usually hate fuzz, best £69 ive spent in the lower pedal range.
Nice one Paul thanks for that 👍that's enough for me to be getting on with, kind of a variation on working man blues you did there on the rhythm, fantastic playing and great info as usual. Thanks from Pwllheli in North Wales. 👍
Yeah, there’s something unique and authentic about Peter Green’s phrasing. It’s only as I age that I’ve actually gone back to Peter Green. As a young player I was too blown away by Clapton’s Bluesbreaker and Cream stuff to notice Peter. But there’s so much of his stuff that I’m now enjoying. Cheers Michael
I can't believe it. I'm a sharkfin guy. I'll never change but I use red ones and I use the serated edge when necessary. 🤭🥴🤭🥴 Question: What are your thoughts on the new Gibson custom Murphy labs?
Really? A fellow sharkfin fan. Must be something in the family genes 😁. Your question about the Murphy Lab..... As you can probably imagine, I’ve been devouring the various UA-cam videos that have started to appear, and I’ve drooled over every one! The recent Peach Guitars unboxing video was awesome. That heavily aged cherry 335 🙏. On the flip side, I can’t help seeing it as Gibson’s clever way of re-labeling / re-positioning an already established product line and bumping prices to the absolute ridiculous. Some of the “Murphy painted” guitars are around £12k!! Which means they’ll end up with collectors and never get played in anger.
I didn't get the Klon thing for the longest time. I got a RYRA Klone a few months back. If you like your amps on the edge of break up or slightly cooking, which you do - it's pretty magical. You would probs dig it. Love your playing and your vids.
I have always got something out of your Q&As. And I have to say my hand is more flexible now and I have managed to learn some of the peices you have done on earlier videos. Granted its not to your standard but it is enjoyable to play. Thanks Paul
That's great news about your hand Neil. Hopefully we’ll have a warm Spring and that might further alleviate inflammation 🤞. Alternatively, just get roaring drunk and play through the pain 😁
Hey Neil, I've broken both my hands and several fingers over the years. The best way to regain flexibility that I have found is to put your hands palm to palm, finger tip to finger tip, and thumb to thumb. Slowly begin to push your fingers and thumbs together until you make a ball inside of your hands. Start out as gentle as you need to making sure you keep all your fingers and thumbs touching the entire time. As your mobility improves add a little more pressure to increase resistance and you will notice a lot improvement pretty quickly. Once you can go through those motions fairly easily, start to just use all of your fingers, keep the tips together and slowly flex your palms away from each other as high as you can comfortably. Press your fingers together walking them back down to your palms. It might take a little bit, but your whole hands will start feeling better. After 40 years of mechanics, construction, and farming, as well as stupid kid stuff and playing in bands, the damage adds up. Make sure you also curl your fingers and thumbs in as small as you can also that way you increase the fullest range of motion without causing pain or injury. About 5 years ago I had carpel tunnel surgery on my left hand just so I could play without my hand going numb. I did these specific movements to maintain the flexibility of my hands and speed up the recovery process. I started doing these movements when I was 15, after breaking my hands the first time and I do them a couple times a day as I get older to remain as flexible as I possibly can. I want to be able to play guitar until my last breath. At least that's the plan. I hope that helps you Neil.
@@gwbuilder5779 Thank you so much for taking the time to give me your experience. I have had a right old time with carpel tunnel in both hands and trigger fingers in both. Finally I have have got to a point where I don't get pain or numbness which is great. I do have to do some stretching exercises and I will certainly try your suggestion. Once again thank you for giving your time to respond. Take care
@@neilhorrabin6320 You are welcome Neil. The hard thing about carpel tunnel, is understanding the things that cause the carpel tendon to inflame and swell. I've used impact and rotary hammer drills for most of my life and that is the cause me. My right hand still has problems, but keeping the range of motion and those hand stretches make a world of difference. My surgeon recommended a combination of hot and cold soaks of the hand and wrist areas. The cold soak helps with the swelling and inflammation that causes the numbness and the heat soak helps relax the tendons. Just remember to take your time and don't push too hard because if you use the heat soak and then stretch too much you can injure the other tendons. The carpel tunnel is actually a flat tendon that connects the two palm pads in the hand. Most people think they are muscles, but they are just padded tissue and the tunnel tendon provides extra support to the wrist structure. The only reason I did the surgery on my left hand was to continue playing guitar and I have know this particular surgical center for over 16 years. Ibuprofen and Motrin are very helpful for reducing inflammation as a temporary treatment, but not recommended long term. Keep with it because being able to play, even if it is limited, will definitely help your frame of mind.
Great thoughts Paul and cool spanish vocabulary: Adiós and Hola! Bedroom playing is sure but to play in a band is a sort of luck to find the right people.
I am certain Uncle Larry would approve of your guitar Paul, I think that is my favorite in your collection, for what that is worth, nice playing as always mate.
Thank you Michael! Yes, this is a guitar that I won’t be relic’ing 🤣. It came with a lovely aged finish from the Gibson factory - VOS they call it. So yeah, I’ll just enjoy that guitar as is 👍
Hey Paul, first things first.. my god what an amazing player! My dad introduced me to your channel and we both cant stop watching your vids, your playing is phenomenal! I have one burning question for you... I struggle to keep motivated to pick up the guitar, and I think its because I dont know where to start when it comes to what to play. What should I practice to know what chords go together, what scales can work well together.. how to break out of the pentatonic and really express yourself through the guitar? No matter how much I practice I cant seem to get my playing out of the same repetitive licks and pentatonic box ? 😫 Beautiful playing as always Paul!
Thank you Matthew, I’m delighted you’re enjoying my little channel 👍. Yes, you’re question is one I’m often asked.... so I made two videos recently, addressing most of your points. Here they are: ua-cam.com/video/Gr0VtjB3lcE/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/S4ht_6i7zl4/v-deo.html. They show a players typical journey throughout the years. Other than watching these two videos, it’s a hard question to answer. If you have good musical ears and you love music then you’ll probably already know what chords go together..... but if you don’t have the musical ear then yes, that will be more difficult. Ultimately, my current level of playing is the result of copying others. Cherry pick what you like and then learn it. If you do that for years then you can’t help but build a repertoire. Luckily, I’m also a very creative person, so combined with the musical ears and the constant learning from others, I’ve ended up feeling quite accomplished. Hope that helps....
For humbuckers start looking into Tone Benders for a Fuzz pedal! Fuzz faces are fine with single coils but they’ve got too much bottom end for Gibsons! Greetings from Glasgow man, hopefully I will be able to see you live when this madness ends
Thank you Samy, that’s interesting what you say about Tone Benders.... Yeah, that makes sense to get a fuzz that suits HBs, since that’s what I play mostly. I’ll get researching 👍
Thank you Mickey! The closest I currently have in terms of a guitar collection video is this one ua-cam.com/video/PaSlSYdZ64M/v-deo.html. I talk a little about all 5 of my guitars and try to pair them with the right amp. Hope you enjoy 👍
Thanks for more great entertainment from you :-) I just watched both your latest videos in a row now (the one on the Gold Top - what a great looking guitar that is). I realise we are watching much of the same stuff on youtube. Big fan of Robben Ford, and that Rockpalast concert is great. The whole step, half step thing is pretty tricky to get to sound musical, but he sure does, and I'd say you are nailing it too. I have a blonde telecaster that needs some attention to be a good player, and you just inspired the Robben Ford vibe, so I think I need to get that in shape and start using it more. As a side note, we did a cover of "Freedom" with my band. That is a cool song to play. Recommended watch for those that have missed out on it (Robben Ford - Freedom).
Cheers Thor. Yeah, I was listening to Freedom this morning actually! Great stuff. On a different note, anyone reading this comment should go check out the GUITARS & GIZMOS channel (if you like tone and good playing!).
I live in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. I heard of this fuzz by a this young lad in the States that makes a fuzz called Red Velvet by Chasetone. There is no fuzz other than this one needed. I am very fussy about fuzzes but this lad makes the real deal. $129.00 USD. you can't beat this. I have a Analogman fuzz and it's good but the Chasetone fuzz is the real vintage deal. I wouldn't steer you wrong on this. I would love to have a Broadcast, but they are very pricey. What I do is an old Nashville thing is to turn your volume and tone pot chrome plate 180 degrees having your tone knob first. Easier to do swells with the volume and tone controls. It really is better I find.
Paul, have you ever recorded a guitar album? All these grate instrumentals? The recording world is changing rapidly and there is a billion guitarists who are buyers.
Being relatively new to your channel I'm still so mesmerized by your playing. You're so musical and creative but I'm also taken by how intelligent and informed your playing is. You're really smart. I love your tone with your 335? I want to say that I prefer it to your Tele but I don't want to be banished from your channel :) Are those the stock pickups? Is it an authentic vintage dot-era 335? What amp are you using? Are you plugged straight in? Very inspiring. Thank you.
Well thank you for that lovely compliment 🙏. Appreciated. Yes, I got the 335 second hand and I love it. It must be a Custom Shop, because it has one of those factory VOS finishes..... And yet, I don’t see any certificate in the case. It’s from 2005 and is completely stock to my knowledge. I wish I knew more about it..... In this vid it’s going into a Reverb pedal (Strymon Flint) and then straight to the amp (Marshall Astoria Custom 30w valve). Cheers 👍
Based on what you've said about how you like your overdrives to sound, I think we have similar tastes and I believe that you would like the King of Tone. I've never regretted buying one a few years ago and it's never come off my board. However, what I wanted to ask was... What was that pedal you showed, but didn't name, given to you by one of your subscribers, Jeff Martin? Cheers.
Hi Kevin. Yes, that is my JTM SS Overdrive, hand made by Jeff Martin. Here’s all the info you’ll need, on my official review of said pedal 😁 ua-cam.com/video/ZsHkjRt6S-g/v-deo.html. It’s very instantly likeable. Fat and juicy and just great.
Hi Hobonickel. I’ve never used a stand alone attenuator before (like the Captor X or the Ox Box). My Marshall Astoria, my Cornell and my Katana all have a built in voltage reduction feature (power scaling), which works really well for home use. My Supro does not, so I simply use a drive pedal to bring out the overdriven sounds. My Vox doesn’t have power scaling either but it DOES have separate Gain and Master volume knobs, so I can get crunch sounds at bedroom volume. Sorry if this isn’t much help....
Thank you Kevin! Actually, I did a vid recently where I talk about no longer doing lessons ua-cam.com/video/2UdddoqMiP0/v-deo.html. But if that ever changes, I’ll announce it on my channel and I’d be happy to help you 👍. Cheers for watching my channel Kevin, appreciated.
Yeah that broadcast pedal sounds great lad. Well with regards to the ibanez tube screamer, I had one years ago ,but never got on with it, gave it away to the lad I was busking with back in the 90s.. steady the ship !! It's all a blur !!!😂 Now fuzz , yep that's an interesting pedal, I turn the fuzz circuit down and run the volume on full , this gives a beautiful over drive ,and as the guitar volume is opened up to max it gets dangerous!!! 😂 It's a lot of fun ...And as for octave fuzz ..Oh Lord. ..And then there's two fuzz pedals and a clean boost ...Well at this point you've basically opened a portal of super fuzz electric blue dreams !!There's just no turning back !!! What ever you do don't a add a pitch shifter you'll be in the outlimits (80s)😂😂 Question: what would have been your "rig" (as they say) back in the day ,with your band, what's the Paul cook rig run down !! Was it marshalls or fenders ;vox or the old peavey bandit !!steady ship !!! Cheers Paul have a good week .. (Shark fin pick...fantastic tone and bite !!!😂😂)
What a great question! So I’ll answer it now, but I’ll also answer it for my next Viewer’s Q&A. So I gigged in a covers band for 15 years (‘91 to ‘06), playing in bars and clubs most weekends. Whilst my gear evolved over the years, it DID settle down. And this was it: A Gibson Les Paul and a ‘91 Fender Stratocaster. My amp was a 90’s Fender Twin (100w all valve). My pedals were just one - a Boss GT-5 multi effects. Most of my driven tones came straight from the amp’s crunch channel. That was it. I found the combination of Les Paul and Strat to be perfect for all the Thin Lizzy, Eagles, Dire Straits, blues and country etc.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 a 90s fender twin (valve ) my word that would have been a very loud amp I would imagine, do you miss not have a twin speaker amp ? The reason I say that is because I use a twin and they are very good amp gererally speaking , practice amps are okay but there's nothing like two 12" speakers with a 335 !!steady the ship!!! 😂 Cheers lad
Its all in the ear ,like me its listening to guitarists and stealing and hiding it away but not just guitars . Ill play s well known tune and find ive gone away somewhere full of my music and i might not come back . This when im trying to play something like alhambra i get lost in it

Thank you Samy, that’s interesting what you say about Tone Benders.... Yeah, that makes sense to get a fuzz that suits HBs, since that’s what I play mostly. I’ll get researching 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 The Keeley Fuzz Bender is a great one without getting into the boutique Macari's stuff!
grapefruit infused IPA, you have great taste in beer, Paul, surpassed only by your musicality, but together? kismet!
🤣, throw in a whiskey chaser, a beaten up Tele and a valve amp, you got yourself a good night 👌
That intro was beautiful a pleasure to listen to, any chance you could do a demo of your guitar collection 😀
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Thanks Paul, that's very kind of you :-)
I live in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.
Thank you Michael, I will check out the Chasetone Red Velvet 👍
Paul, have you ever recorded a guitar album? All these grate instrumentals? The recording world is changing rapidly and there is a billion guitarists who are buyers.
Yeah, you make a good point Glenn... The idea does pop into my mind now and again. 🤔
Really enjoyed Q&A #3. Next time crack open 6 bottles of Elvis Juice ...........that'll make you a bona-fide 'Session player"!
Challenge accepted 🤣
Cheers 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Thanks for the gear info.
PAUL YOU KEEP DOING WHAT YOU KEEP DOING ITS ABOUT YOUR HOBBIE ENJOY.
Sublime playing,I’m sure the same notes are on my guitars, but to misquote Eric Morcambe, not in the same order.
Love your Eric Morcambe reference 🤣.
What attenuator should I pickup for home use?
Hi Hobonickel. I’ve never used a stand alone attenuator before (like the Captor X or the Ox Box). My Marshall Astoria, my Cornell and my Katana all have a built in voltage reduction feature (power scaling), which works really well for home use. My Supro does not, so I simply use a drive pedal to bring out the overdriven sounds. My Vox doesn’t have power scaling either but it DOES have separate Gain and Master volume knobs, so I can get crunch sounds at bedroom volume. Sorry if this isn’t much help....
Really like to take a lesson with you.
Thanx Kevin
Thank you Kevin! Actually, I did a vid recently where I talk about no longer doing lessons ua-cam.com/video/2UdddoqMiP0/v-deo.html. But if that ever changes, I’ll announce it on my channel and I’d be happy to help you 👍. Cheers for watching my channel Kevin, appreciated.
Yeah that broadcast pedal sounds great lad. Well with regards to the ibanez tube screamer, I had one years ago ,but never got on with it, gave it away to the lad I was busking with back in the 90s.. steady the ship !! It's all a blur !!!😂
Now fuzz , yep that's an interesting pedal, I turn the fuzz circuit down and run the volume on full , this gives a beautiful over drive ,and as the guitar volume is opened up to max it gets dangerous!!! 😂
It's a lot of fun ...And as for octave fuzz ..Oh Lord. ..And then there's two fuzz pedals and a clean boost ...Well at this point you've basically opened a portal of super fuzz electric blue dreams !!There's just no turning back !!! What ever you do don't a add a pitch shifter you'll be in the outlimits (80s)😂😂
Question: what would have been your "rig" (as they say) back in the day ,with your band, what's the Paul cook rig run down !!
Cheers lad
Its all in the ear ,like me its listening to guitarists and stealing and hiding it away but not just guitars . Ill play s well known tune and find ive gone away somewhere full of my music and i might not come back . This when im trying to play something like alhambra i get lost in it
