If you want to increase your speed in Box 1, you will need to master this simple lick. It serves as the gateway to so many other fast licks in this shape.
These are the first lessons I've come across that show the guitar from the players perspective. Brilliant idea, wish more were like this.
August 26th 2011, that time 21 years ago stevie would of been playing at alpine valley... a true master of the electric guitar and shall live on in many of our souls for as long as we live.. R.I.P Stevie
Stevie Ray Vaughan invented every lick.
Really? Check out Albert King...
simon van der Heijden the list is much longer than that...
Jimi lol what
@@SwingCritic141 its Jimmy smart guy.
That's the spirit
I remember when I first learned this from you. I spent at least a week doing just this drill until it was second nature. It really is as you said, “the gateway” to most of his greatest licks.
I first perfected it without the amp turned on. After getting it down and really getting that “bouncy” feel to it, I turned on the 64 Deluxe Reverb and it was so much easier and fluid.
I know I’ve said it before, but you give more to the student than anyone in the business does!
Good on you!
John.
Wow, been sweating on getting the speed on this sort of licks, and now i finally got it! Thanks!
Thanks so much for all your lessons! This is exactly the kind of stuff i`ve been lookiong for to further develop my techniques!
Pure gold Anthony, thanks a lot!
Gr8, the small technical details you share are extremely useful and it helped me to improv a lot only after a short time of traning. Keep it up and thx.
Love the red house lick in the intro
I was wondering if anyone else recognized that lick.
same
Man, I have been trying to find something to help me practice playing like Stevie Ray for a long time. I couldn't figure out how he does that but this video helped me get that down. Good teaching and very useful.
This is the best lesson I have learned yet,,Thanx so much Anthony,,,you are the best dude, I really cant thank you enough !
You can find the gear I used in every free lesson on StevieSnacks. Just find this lesson in the free lesson section.
StevieSnacks ...
What a great name!
It just says it all..
Plus adresses immediately the right audience.
Great lesson man!
The tip about letting the bent string snap back and be muted by your index finger is great :)
once again a great lesson! i got the hammer-on and pull-offs from the other lessons but now i see the picking technique you use. just practicing it right now! Too Cool!!! man, is this fun! thanks again,Anthony!!!!!!!!!!!
Very useful, great instructing. Thanks Anthony.
Agree 100% pan, first time in a way that works for me. I need it broke down completely then explained how to speed it up. Got a new sub with me texas.
Man you got a sweet sound ! Ever note sounds awesome .
Nice job Anthony! This looks like something that may actually help me improve.
I have heard that lick every since I was a child. I first heard it in the early seventies and wondered how they did it? It seemed like they were so amazing to be able to do it. Now I now the secret. Its still looks like a tuff skill to hone.
YOU ARE THE BEST TEACHER EVER !
Great lesson, thanks!
love this channel
that was the first thing i noticed aswell thx for clearing that up
Simple and effective, Thank you
these are the best lessons on youtube
great lesson thanks
im new to your channel and u are amazing the way you play, but moreover, your explanation of things makes it so easy to follow. i am not good at sweep picking at all, i'll get it right like 1 out of 10 attempts, lol thank you.
Love this one 🤙🤙
crafty stuff, i learned something !!!
great lesson. thx
So useful, thanks
Thank you
thank you
Love it..👍🎸
@sysphus13 I initially started doing it because I read that Stevie did, but there's a lot of practical reasons that I prefer it now. One reason is that the pick gets hung up in the strings more with the pointy end, both for regular picking and faster 'fan' picking (where I use the flat, back side of the pick).
so you don't prefer the pointy picks for playing?
Me either.
Most of his stuff is on Stevie Ray Vaughan's work. SRV tuned down one half step so it wouldn't make sense to use standard tuning and try to play with a backing track or CD of SRV. It is a huge pain to switch back and forth between tunings if you're using a strat. If I go on a SRV binge, I usually tune one of my guitars down and just leave it that way. If I want to use a regular-tuned guitar, I'll use a different one.
i fuckin love these lessons
keep rockin bro
That is an "aha" moment! I used to try to pick every note. Never thought you need to "cheat" being fast with hammer on and pull offs.
Thank you for these box lessons. They have helped my phrasing big time!
I have always been bogged down with full on scales. The Albert King box is money. I have been targeting the ending notes you’ve recommended.
I sound much better. I have been using basic 1 4 5 type progressions.
My question is, what should I target when there are 4 or more chords? Should I target those as well? Sometimes it’s hard to remember the chords/root notes as these jam tracks I practice with expand. I hope I’ve detailed my question clearly enough.
Thanks for all you do.
Chuck Berry's universal lick lives on...
@Chewwy153qt Huh...I never even noticed I had one. That's weird.....
@brianabadia1983 not nessarily, i usually use dunlop jazz 3s which are small picks so when someone hands me a regular pick now i usually use the side of it beacause i find it easier to pick faster and use my other fingers, but its all prefrence
@kortt That's cuase blues comes from the inside, you cant just learn it from a tab book and jam along, you have to feel it, you have to know what note comes next and what u have to express, blues is like speaking english, you know what word or lick comes next cause u know what ur going to say. That is the main difference between blues and any other style :) peace bros
This is a great exercise but speed is also in the head, not only in the hands, you have to think music fast and as a guitarrist i think the problem is not in the hands, because the hands will make you play what you have in your head and that isn't as trainable but still, this as you say unlocks a lot of licks :)
@Shalaka90 5:27
@Chewwy153qt Blues does NOT include use of the pinky...
@Pollutens Don't know about that, you may be right. But, I know guitarist who can play wicked fast as long as it's something they've learned from a tab book. They can't improvise because they haven't trained themselves to think musically. My son in law can play Metallica all day long, but ask him to jam to freeform blues and he's lost.
Hey man... Do you have any other tips that would allow easier bending??... I'd really appreciate it man
Is there a reason to not alternate pick the low note after the sweep?
Awesome instruction--thanks. Do you know where this lick came from or who first used it?
It was first played in a song called “The Caveman Blues” in 1500 BC by an Egyptian cover band. Or so I have been told.
Is it okay to have the B string bleed into the E a little bit? Thanks so much for this.
@gr8bluesgtr hey dude can you please do some rory gallagher style lessons in the future?
When I bend my middle and ring fingers hit the D string and makes a sound, is there anyway I can mute it? Seems to be my only issue
I have been playing alot of srv the past couple months and when this I play style lick I alternate between using my ring and middle finger to do the bend on the g string. Do you think that I should try only using my middle like you do or should I do what's comfortable? Also when doing the hammer on the b string sometimes I hit the e string in the process, do you have any tips for eliminating that problem or it it just a practice makes perfect thing?
Excellent trick in the bag ! Is it the angle or is your action set pretty high ? I can't get the hammer on to sound anywhere near the same volume as the other notes. If at all. I think my action is too low. Thoughts ?
Wow those strings are high..
Hello... i was wondering why you prefer a higher action in your set up... i know SRV was similar in that sense but was just wondering why? many thanks
On what kind of guitar do you play! I think it's a strat but I can be wrong!
Woah do you always hold the pick sideways like thay
@Pollutens yeah, but you cant play what you hear or think in your head if you dont have the necessary strength in your fingers. You need to learn to hear and think musically with your head but you need to train your fingers in order to follow your musical ideas.
How do I prevent my ring finger from going under the d string while pulling off the g string bend?
The action on your D string might be a little too high if that's happening. Bring it down a little bit at a time until it catches on your fingertip while bending.
What gauge strings and what brand?
It should snap against your index finger tip.
I notice you use the circular side of the pick too...is that a stevie thing, or just something you do?
it looks like you turned your pick around and used the softer point. its essential for dirty pool strumming but does it also help with single notes?
You can also strum Dirty Pool style with the pointy end ^^ Just takes a while :)
That's cool, but on that 4. note, wouldn't it be easier to upstroke it? Like a 3 down's and then on the B string one up... It's easier for me that way. 'cos if I don't do it that way, when i'm coming back to repeat the lick, my pick always hit's that B string and it sounds like a mess. Anyway, that's just me. Great lessons by the way. :)
What gauges are your strings, I play with 11's and hear it messes up the neck???
i know that jimi hendrix used it
are you baring a few snares while soloing,do i see right?
Are you sure it wasn't Albert King? Some of it also sounds like Freddie King. Thanks.
He is tuned to 440... Eb
@underoath115 ?
Does this lesson has anything to do with what Stevie Ray does in about 2:02 of the Tokyo 1985 Tin Pan Alley version? Love the lessons. God bless you.
watch?v=B0tzR34ZCVE&feature=related
great lesson - i have to use my pinky - damn these short stubby fingers ;(
don't get discouraged......watch Danny gatton play sometime......he had fat stubby fingers and could KILL IT....
Easier bending.
@Chewwy153qt Read the chanell name, watch SRV live and there U go ...
gr8 lesson but do i have to put my screen upside down in order to watch this?
I notice you don't use your pinky, why?
@wtfwasthatt Only if I want to trade in my badge of awsomeness.
(kidding :-)
What guitar do you use, thank you :)
Yes much easier from this angle its the natural way
I guess it's a good tutorial, but for me a lot of excercise is included... first need to to keep my d-string calm somehow Oo
use the side of your picking hand
I see that 1 person could not play this lick apparently...
not Bb. you play in B
No he is in Bb his guitar is tuned down a half-step.
I think he was joking dude.
i just discovered your stuff recently. your lessons are very cool but why the hell can't you tune to a 440 like 90% of the rest of the world? it's a giant pain in the ass.
Ha ha ha
Bref les français connaissent cette hypocrisie
Heureusement qu' Alvin lee avait la barre haute 😁
Don't try this at home kiddies...
You need a new mike. I picks up your breathing too much
Chuck Mastrog you need new ears, you hear too much
