yeah, i wanted to make it obvious that artificer isnt going to let hunter in easily. out of wariness and also a side of spite. she knew what was coming, but she couldnt bear to keep pushing hunter away until then. and now, shes alone, and she never truly got to say that she loved hunter back.
I imagine Arti using the cycle and how Hunter's rot works to try and keep her alive as long as possible. Moving into a permanent shelter more or less and bringing her food to eat. Refusing to let her leave as the more control the rot has, the more easily she'll lose her last thing in life. Maybe if that happens, she'll try to take the rot, too. Knowing she can't ascend, preferring not to either die with Hunter or become part of her. Imagine the Hunter-Long-Legs, but it's fused with a hypothetical Artificer-Long-Legs.

I don't actively do shipping, I just like when people in the rw community do things, so from what I know of this artihunter and of shipping, it's all about the “what if”s You mentioned “Hunter is doomed, Artificer would lose another loved one at the end of it” that part is very much correct, but all the other factors you mentioned aren't set in stone. Unfortunately I can't explain more about it because I'm really far from knowledgeable about this, so I hope someone else adds to this attempt at explaination, or make another explanation of their own.
I think the common interpretation is that Hunter is just that good a slugcat(they spent their last cycles doing tasks for the iterators in the canon, so it's not too far a stretch) that Artificer opens up to them and heals a bit before the realization that Hunter is dying, then there's a lot of ways this headcanon can go from here. But one thing is certain, they don't end up the same as they are in canon. And hey, even in the timeline where Hunter dies and leaves Artificer heartbroken, that's not too bad a thing either, since it would probably bring Artificer out of their senseless violence and reexamine their priorities. Tears will be shed, however. But crying's good, both for the soul, and for the audiences.
