"Lonely Country" is a dramatic short film by James Perry

More from the director:
"The dominant narrative surrounding rural queerness in cinema is one of escape, in which queer characters fulfill their destiny when they outgrow their given community and seek greener, more metropolitan pastures elsewhere. This narrative has never rung true to me. Queerness has always existed, and continues to exist, within rural spaces. Even in times before a visible queer community could safely, visibly exist anywhere, queer people were respected members of rural communities. Their queerness may not have had a name or a common language. It may have manifested in more discreet forms, but it was present. I wanted to pay homage to the queer people who chose not to leave their communities and to the communities that included them, even if by turning a blind eye."

He acted out of love, need, and then the hitchhiker acted out of hate. Sad
I don't know if I would call that love, 'need' yes? More like stifling desperation guided by intuition. That hitchhiker however was 'clearly' flirting. No doubt, not first time he's done this...
More than sad. But I guess it was more desire than love, or both. Anyway, violence was not necessary. I don't know if I can say I appreciate that short movie. I know how people are, I don't need a movie to tell me what we all know.
The hitchhiker acted out of fear. He kissed back, until he realized what he was doing.
I’ve lived this scene except I was in shower with him
That´s why you don´t pick strangers up. Unexpected ending. Great short!
I pick up one person once. I was driving from Kingston to Poughkeepsie. He was disabled & I helped him. (August 1979)
I used to hitchhike all the time. So many different people picked me up. Once an old man. Once an old lady and her grandson going to the Grand Theatre in London(Ontario). Once a younger couple (early 20s). Couple in their 30s. Actually never a single woman but women and girls with others. Once a group of 3 girls maybe 19 but I had to be illegally in the back of the pickup truck and stay down lol. Lotsa fun. This was like 2006-2015
This is a very good film. It is so sad to think that this goes on. Couldn't the hitchhiker have said NO, instead of reacting violently. Too much hate still goes on.
that hitch hiker gave every gay signal one could imagine- from the age old gotta light, I need a place to stay, can itake a shower and came out in his underwear sitting close and sharing a cig.said he had no girl friendc I think it hurt the film to have him go off like that. If he was in the closet they could have offered a way out- that would have been more interesting.
Actually it’s not hate, it’s fear. There is nothing as hate. People who “hate” are somehow locked.
Gb1❤❤ 4:30
@@anthonymavilia7315 You are right that every signal was there, but that doesn't give him a green light, unless he has his permission. The hitch hiker's reaction was way over the top though. No one has permission to hit another person.
@@janvanbowens Do you mean fear and hatred of themselves, for maybe being Gay? So they strike out at others, to feel vindicated.
The ending is worth a million dollars…..kindness, love (unconditional), respect, honor …..
The guy was clearly flirting with him …a closet case but job ! Don’t bring strangers home ..they could be crazy 🤪
I used to pick up guys late at night and had numerous close calls. I never brought any home tho. I stopped doing this because it is dangerous
SPOILER. Jack is a tall, skinny, good-looking teenager hitchhiking a long distance across rural Ontario in the 1950s. He's at a gas station and sees Eugene. He initiated a conversation with Eugene, interrogated Eugene with inappropriate questions that suggested a sexual interest, invited himself to sleep overnight at Eugene's home, asked Gene if he has a girl, asked to take a shower, left the bathroom door open for Eugene to see him while he toweled dry, walked to the kitchen in his tighty-whitey briefs and shoulder-strap t-shirt, then sat next to Eugene who was wearing only long underwear and sitting on the side of his bed in his bedroom, wore a neck chain with a cross pendant, when asked by Eugene told him that he doesn't have a girl, said that it's good to have privacy living alone and Eugene agreed. Eugene interprets Jack's flirty behavior as a come-on and kisses him. Jack acts offended, beats Eugene unconscious and leaves.
Jack acted like an experienced, subtle hustler throughout the film. An elderly couple came to Eugene's house the next morning, found him and treated his wounds in time for him to lead the services at the church where he served as the minister.
Religion is not the same thing as morality. Morality is not the same thing as sex. All moralities and ethics are arbitrary rules. Religion is one way to control individuals to conform to social norms and taboos using the concepts of sin, guilt and fear. Sad.
Thanks for the spoiler. Now I don't have to watch the film. I hate seeing violence.
I just can't watch another film with a sad ending of a lonely gay man who experiences violence because of his sexuality. Especially, when his intentions are good and he's seeking companionship.
@@samandros3451same!
A detailed synopsis; quite descriptive and accurate, but not a fitting substitute for actually experiencing the film. It's sad enough to watch the film, but is infinitely more mournful to read a synopsis and assume that qualifies one to skip the story that the writer, director, producer, and entire crew thought was important enough to film. On another note, one must admire the astute summary, as it's well-written and worthy of commendation.
@@sheepherder3737 My first word was SPOILER so readers have the option to read or not read it. My intention was to motivate the readers to watch the film and see for themselves the nuanced, subtle dynamic between the two lads and maybe sense their libido energy. :-)
Whoa!!! Wasn’t ready for this one…. First, beautifully filmed, the cinematographic and lighting work was outstanding, as was the set design/selection. Incredible attention to detail… The excellent script writing; an old, old story of the frequently brutal price that was paid by so many when driven by a loneliness that became too much to bear..
And, secondly, and as an aside: Anyone remember the Canadian film “Strangers In Good Company”? Not that there was necessarily any correlation between it and this film, but I was reminded just what an outstanding job the Canadian Film Board and Arts Commission has done with projects such as this - far better than we have done down here in the U.S…
Anyway, a job well done by cast and crew… Bravo - keep up the good work - and hope to see more from you folks up north…
All the best from Washington State.
Don't pick up strangers! If you do, don't expect them to be interested!! Of they ask to stay over, say no! The odds of them being gay are very slim!
Didn't see that ending coming...very good!
A Very Vunerable man & his kindness was badly abused, very well acted😘
Kindness? WTF, he was on the make, the opening shots tell us that straight up.
This Canadian film was outstanding! However, the violent ending was unexpected. Loneliness can indeed be a "killer" in a metaphorical sense. Fortunately, the preacher recovered physically, though one can only guess at the mental repercussions.
I thought at first this was a romantic movie between an adult man and a young boy, until I felt like sharing this with my romance boy. And then, the atmosphere becomes thriller and I'm actually disappointed....
WOW! Very well done! Very sad and so unexpected that he was a pastor.
A lesson to be Learned here Never ever Pick up or help a Stranger and Take him or her to your Own Home ,But I Liked Eugene performence !
just leaving a comment here so I can come back after maybe 10 years or so
Loneliness does creep up, we are only humans after all. 😅
🎉
Beautifully made. However, the subject matter was expected. Our community needs to write more authentic stories of gay love and hope. Or, better yet, just tell the story and the characters just happen to be gay? It's 2024, let's update the storytelling for our community.
Why do all gay stories have a bad ending? Why?!?
Just like str8s
I dont know why so many films of a gay nature have to be so dark and depressing. Could have gone in a different direction. But didn't.
Sorry, thumbs down! Tired of seeing these unhappy ending. Lets move it forward.
Amen. Very defeatist, and "victim" again and again. Tired and outdated.
I met Jack on Grindr and he did the same thing when we met. He used my shower and sat next to me and when we kissed he
Empathy is learned through suffering. Ugly is only skin deep, shallow is a void. Butt let us die in peace only peace this world knows
I saw him on Grindr.
Nice one!!! Surprise ending.👌🏻👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻♥️🇿🇦
Never take anyone to your home specially if you live alone. People are never grateful, to me the signals from the stranger were exactly what the older men got. Sad but not far from reality.
Outstanding! All of it, everything.
Well done. I quite appreciated the plot twist! LGBTQ stories, like all stories, run the gamut of emotional outcomes. While I enjoy those where the guy gets the guy, the tough ending here is also, sadly, real to life.
Ah! What loneliness can do. Nicely done.
Yeah Man
I thank that the young man was gay ...but he was just a young man trying to find his real self
And used the man to get money...
The young man was just a PLAYER....
the older man was looking for love and hope that it would be a relationship...
How rude! A shower and bed for the night don't come free. 😂
And a free laid
Negotiate the price beforehand! Don't try to take it after the fact!
Hola como estas @@bdpilot28
Granted I would not respond as this guy did, I would still like to be asked before kissed.
The boy actually leaned forward and kissed him. Watch it again.
@@ParvaizRaja
WOW! You're right, he kinda kissed back! What's up with that? 😒
@@mtw1234 the guilt of being gay.
We've all been raised to feel guilty about being gay, believing it's immoral and wrong to have feelings for the same sex. This deeply ingrained belief is like a poison, and not everyone can survive the harm that religion and culture inflict on us.
@@ParvaizRaja: A very perceptive analysis. The rage of the young man's self-hatred is violently misdirected at the older man. That part of the movie was too difficult for me to watch as it triggered some sort of trauma response in me, but the movie is like a visual poem. So beautifully and elegantly done.
Ma basta con tutte queste sigarette 😂😂😂😂😂😂
O hate movies that portrays gay people as weak. Like they can’t protect themselves from aggressors. The guy a lot bigger than the little kid. That is big bs.
Perhaps the pastor was a pacifist, turning the other cheek as his Lord had instructed. Or perhaps he himself was a self-hating closet case, raised in religion to believe that he deserved whatever form of punishment came his way.
The hitchhiker came on to him.
"Jack" was a predator, an experienced queer basher and thief who used his self-hatred to excuse his criminality. A fictional character but, unfortunately, common enough.
Gratitude can be mistaken for affection.
Thank you for sharing a great movie.😊

Such gorgeous, thoughtful work!
People don’t pick up complete strangers to give them a place to sleep for the night. How stupid! Oh, it’s Jack from Brokeback Mountain!
A pastor who helped stranger. Your on risk. And, long ago, I’m not certainly about homeless shelters.
did not expect that
Lovely.
That's no need for the film to be so violently for just that movement, the hitch hiker could politely said no to a good guy instead of trying to kill him...
And this is why you don’t meet guys off grinder also
Tension leading up to it was good but they botched the ending
great short... never be kind to strangers then !!!
Very well done film... But, yet another in the multitude of gay movies where everything goes to crap. That's gotten very old and tiresome.
Is this a movie or a warning for not taking anyone in?
Another short about a lonely gay man who reaches out only to be met with violence. Can’t we move past this? Are there literally no other stories to tell about gay men that you have to tell this one again (and again, and again, and again). Yikes. I just don’t understand what draws filmmakers to this in 2024 when it’s been done to death for decades.
Thank you xx
The secondary title is a misnomer... how does this spark his discovery as a gay man? Bait & switch 👎🏽
Cannot be worse: one was latent closeted gay who panicked oio much, another one - isntead of at least try to fight back to defend himslef - found so called "protection" behind the screen of religion (to continue living in a lie, a deeper lie than ever)....
Very good neighbors! That boy is crazy, he first engaged in the kiss then snapped! Normally someone who is not into it would said wow what you’re doing? What a jerk!
Hitchhiker needs to be PUNISHED!!!!
Великолепная операторская работа, актеры тоже сыграли хорошо. Избегайте случайных знакомств..
Hateful movie but many older gay men have experience this😢
Hello from Kropyvnytskyi, Ukraine
As soon as the first punch was thrown I bailed. Smh! Tired of this type of gay movies.
This was too sad
So the self-discovery was an ass-kickin'?
Podrías subir los subtitulos en español? please?☺️

Another negative gay movie. How bout a GD happy ending for a change?
Tour de force. But tragic.
Rather than kiss the young man, the homosexual should have told the young man that he was gay. Kissing the young man was too big a step.

So stereotypical.

You just watched the movie. It’s a short film.
Ahh here we are well into the 21 century still making depressing movies where we get beaten up killed or things go very very wrong for queer people, and I don't care that this was done as a kinda period piece. Enough of this sh#ty tripe where we get killed at the end or worse . . . yes there are things worse than death.
The dialogue was poorly written and the acting very dry and forced.
you sound very privileged this is reality of millions of ppl around the world
@@MariamMohamuud-py7zp I'm not privileged, I'm 66 and very surprised I'm alive still, when I was a kid the nicest things I heard about queer people was that "we should have born dead" or that our parents wasted their money raising us, in movies we were depicted as perverts, pedophiles, predators or just as a character that was something to be laughed at and ridiculed.
Never a positive depiction or at least a "normal" one whatever normal is.
Positive depiction is what haters fear the most, demonizing is their agenda, and don't get me started on organized religion, especially any derived from the abrahamic death cult.
We need positive stories, uplifting stories wholesome stories so the new generation can see hope and a good future.
This short to me is not, just more of the same depressing tropes.
Just to clarify, I am not angry at your comment, I understand where you are coming from, there are many countries in the world infested by religion in their governments that need scapegoats to justify the atrocities they keep committing.
Perpetuating more myths. This scenario of violence is usually inflicted on by couples, not strangers.
so you wont beat a stranger who try to grape you? xD

Outstanding news... Christ's blood, his death on the cross, releases us from the guilt of sin, accepting us as righteous in God's sight Colossians1:20 The cross shows the seriousness of our sin, it also shows God's immeasurable love. There's hope and salvation to all who put their trust in Jesus. Please think about it.

It's always the same clichés for gay movies. One question. Why don't they include other religions within this LGBT context? Why is the Church of Christ always desecrated? Why don't they pick on Muhammad?😡😡😡
Was the Church of Christ denigrated in this? If anything, I think the film was about a Christian (who happened to be gay, or at least unsure) showing love to someone in need as would be expected. The Christian came across well.
