Fun fact: When Alan Rickman dropped, that was real fear in his face. He was dropped 40 feet, and was supposed to be dropped on the count of three. The director dropped him on one.
Some people say it only happens to take place at Christmas, but it's not about Christmas.. But it *is* kind of about Christmas, and actually has a Christmas message in it. I don't think it's a total coincidence that his wife's name is Holly, and if you think of the movie with her as the central character, she's caught in a dilemma between materialism on one side(in the form of being pursued by Ellis who gives her a very materially valuable Christmas present, as well as Hans and the terrorists being the personification of the spirit of extreme materialism, only caring for money and callous towards human lives), and on the other side John who really loves her and completes her family. This is the basic dilemma about the true meaning of Christmas, materialism vs love and things that money can't buy. In the end she is literally being pulled by these two forces, Hans and John, and how symbolic is the Rolex? She gladly throws away the Christmas present that has great material value and walks away with the more valuable gift of her husband and the reunification of her family. Love wins, money and materialism is conquered. That's a Christmas movie theme right there, not just a plot that *happens* to take place at Christmas. Thankfully the message is conveyed with enough subtlety that it can still be enjoyed any time of the year, but that "true meaning of Christmas" dilemma is woven right into the fabric of the story and really puts it in a special category of movies that are in fact Christmas movies, but can also be watched all year and still be enjoyable.
Die Hard is a Christmas movie for one reason: Christmas isn’t just the setting, it’s the reason everything happens. The terrorists chose that night for the heist because there would be less people, but still enough for the hostage situation, McClane was there because there was a Christmas party. Christmas is integral to the plot.
It's a Christmas movie. Should be on Hallmark channel every year. Family having issues. Trying to get back together. Things get in the way. It's a Christmas miracle that the family even survived.
The guy playing Sgt Powell was on the verge of quitting acting when he landed the role. When it became a success he bought his Mom a house. The actors playing Karl & his brother were both renowned ballet dancers.
it's a Christmas movie. It's got all the elements. Set in Christmas. He's trying to get to his loved ones. The circumstances brings him closer to his wife cuz of the holidays.
It's a non traditional Christmas movie. It takes place on Christmas Eve at an office Christmas party, there's Christmas imagery all through the movie, they use Christmas songs all through the movie and those songs are used to set the moods. Mcclain is there to resolve his differences with his wife (and who else said Christmas is about resolving our differences? Why it was Clark Griswold in Christmas Vacation, a Christmas movie). Check out the video " science proves that Die Hard is a Christmas movie", it'll convince you. If Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie, then Home Alone isn't either. Kevin's family could have left him home alone anytime of the year, it just happened to be at Christmas.
Die Hard Director John McTiernan weighed in on the debate and we now finally have an authoritative answer to the long-debated question. Yes, Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
The fundamental piece to this movie is family reconciliation. That is a huge Christmas move trope. Die Hard is not only a Christmas movie, it is THE BEST Christmas movie.
When Alan Rickman was being dropped out of the window from 40 feet or so onto a protective bag, they told him they would drop him on the count of 3. They decided to drop him on 2 in order to get the facial reaction you see in the movie as a better form of cinema. The producers were smart enough to make it Alan's last shot of the film itself.
Its not Christmas until Hans Gruber goes out the window... The reason why this is a Christmas movie - is that it not only takes place at Christmas time, the holiday drives the plot. The Christmas Party is why everyone comes together. While it could have taken place around any holiday an estranged husband would not fly across the country to attend his wife's corporate 4th of July BBQ.... Only a Christmas Party - with the promise of family time with his children would get him on that plane. (also considering that John doesnt like to fly) Its a Christmas Movie. btw Great reaction - just found your channel today.... Subscribed...
And Bruise's wife in the movie is named Holly. And they play "Let It Snow" during the ending credits. I don't care what other people say; I've been watching this movie every Christmas since I was born and it's gonna stay that way.
I never thought about this before until you mentioned the accent, but Alan Rickman is a British actor who is putting on a German accent while at the same time putting on an American accent while still speaking with a German one 🤯
It's a Xmas movie, because of the warm fuzzy feeling that love can conquer all and because of how Holly and John swallow their pride and get the family back together for the holidays.
Saw this in the theater and my girlfriend was a German exchange student and her translating the terrorists just pulled me even deeper. Love this movie and can watch it every time it’s on tv
Fun fact: Alexander Godunov (Russian), the guy with the 'hair", was once a ballet dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet. He actually defected to the U.S. in the late '70's.
This is a Christmas movie. The story is driven by the fact it's Christmas. Why is he traveling? It's "Christmas story of daddy returning for the holidays" is interrupted by the robbery.
It's okay that you don't think this is a Christmas movie. There are two kinds of people in the world; people who know it's a Christmas movie and people who are WRONG.
Don't let the fact that Die Hard came out in July deter from the fact that it is a Christmas movie. Release date has little to do with that. Miracle on 34th Street, definitely a Christmas movie, was released in May 1947. 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
You can't judge something as not a Christmas movie if it was released in July. That's like saying Hocus Pocus is not a Halloween movie because it was released in July. Die Hard is about being tired after a rough year, going through the final tribulations and making that effort to admit your mistakes, to give in to the Holiday spirit. It's about dropping Hans Gruber from a building because he only wanted his presents, it's about punching the reporter who only cared about fame and endangered others to pursue it.
Hocus Pocus is not a Halloween movie. Its a Holloween theme pile of garbage. This recent retconning it into some kind of comedic gem is embarrasding to anyone who actually was around when it came out and bombed in theaters and had abysmal ratings on tv and bad rental numbers for years.
The Christmas carol, Silent Night, was composed by Franz Gruber. Not too much of a leap from Hans Gruber. I love your Christmas analogy at the end as well. I agree.
Stumbled across this reaction & Starship Troopers. Instantly subscribed & feel like I may have found my people. 😉🤪 I totally call this a Christmas movie & watch it every year while decorating.
It's definitely a Christmas movie. It goes right down the checklist of what makes a Christmas movie. Christmas Eve, check. Christmas music, check. Christmas present, check. Christmas party, check. The phrase "Merry Christmas", check. Christmas tree, check. Helping someone get over a personal issue (Al getting over his shooting fear), check. Feel good family moment (John and Holly rekindling their relationship at the end), check. What else could there possibly be to make it more of a Christmas movie? And yes, the fact it happens at Christmas is vital to the plot. Without the fact it was Christmas, there would be way more security in the building, way more people in the building which would've been way harder for the bad guys to control. It's literally VITAL to the plot. Even a normal weekend would still have more security.
This came out when I was in high school and it was a total game changer - I think I saw it 7 or 8 times in theater. It's had many imitators since, but it was the first of its kind, maybe the father of the "modern" action movie. And it's 100% a Christmas movie :)
It was said that the scene where McClane and Hans meet by the roof, where Hans says his name is Bill Clay, wasn't originally in the script. Once the filmmakers heard Alan Rickman do an American accent, that scene was written in.
You know, I think I just realized this but you guys are the only reaction video channel that I find myself actually watching the whole intro before the reaction. Normally I get bored of their generic "Please be sure to Like, Subscribe, and hit the Notification Bell..." stuff I just skip all of it. I'm genuinely entertained by the whole video with you guys. Keep it up!!
Here's a neat bit of trivia. Use of the term "die hard" to refer to someone who refuses to give up comes from the nickname of the British army's 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot: "The Die Hards." They earned the name at the Battle of Albuera in 1811. They were in imminent danger of being routed by the French, and their colonel, William Inglis, had been gravely wounded by a 4 pound shot through the neck and shoulder. Though suffering huge blood loss and in great pain, Inglis refused to be removed from the battlefield. As he lay there, possibly thinking this might be his regiment's last stand, he shouted to his men "Die hard, you devils! Die hard!" and 57th stood their ground and kept on fighting until the enemy was forced to withdraw. The French commander, Marshal Soult, would later say something to the effect of "There is no beating such troops! The day was mine. [The British troops] were defeated, but they would not run away!" Since then the regiment has been known as "The Die Hards."
The only flaw in his it's not a Christmas movie.... John would not have been there if it wasn't coming to spend Christmas with his family... That makes it a Christmas movie
I think this is an interesting debate. I never see it as a Christmas movie because it has nothing to do with Christmas. It could be set in any office party and still work beautifully.
I am SO loving this channel because you are working your way through basically EVERY movie I loved growing up. ALL of them. Seriously, Emily, have you NOT been to a theater????
I agree with Matthew, actually. For me, it's not a Christmas movie. It's about the spirit, not the time of the year. This is a very good action movie that just happens to take place in Christmas time, but it would work just as fine in any other time of the year. There is no snow, no cold, no Santa, no presents... It even came out in summer. Why is so important, anyway? I don't get why some people insist so much that it is a Christmas film
Bruce and Alan's first film. The German was largely gibberish. The building address briefly shown is the actual address. FOX Plaza, adjacent to the FOX movie lot. Alexander Gudanov, (RIP), the second main terrorist was a word famous ballet dancer. It's a Christmas movie.
My take on the whole christmas-movie be-or-not-to-be is, that it's a christmas movie if it is a christmas movie in YOUR eyes. If you don't get that feel for it then fine, then it's not a christmas movie. I don't think this debate can be argued on an objective level, the answer is always going to be subjective.
If you remove the robbery from the movie then it would be classified as a Christmas by virtually everyone. It's a movie about a man trying to get back together with his wife at christmas and in the end he proves to his wife that he is willing to do anything and everything for her and wins her back.
Of course itsa Jul/Christmas movie. Apart from directors saying sound it being quite obvious. This movie is mostly aired internationally on TV during Jul/Christmas. Nice reaction
This is a must watch Christmas movie for me every year. A common reason people give for it not being a Christmas movie is that it only takes place at Christmas. You can say the same thing about 90% of the Hallmark Christmas movies...they're all just romantic dramas that happen to take place at Christmas, but yet they are considered Christmas movies.
Die Hard is, at it's core, about forgiveness (of ones self and others), admitting mistakes and bringing families together. With all that and it's Christmas setting, it's a Christmas Movie. And most Christmas movies actually don't come out during Christmas. Elf, for example (definitely a Christmas movie) was an October release.
The Christmas response from the police is exactly what was planned, diminished resources to immediately respond until needed. They sent Al because he was a desk jockey and they didn't believe there was really a problem, during a regular time of the year, that radio call would have triggered a big police response. Everyone was liquored up, and more controllable because the Christmas party. There were not many people in the building because of the Christmas party. John came out to see her at christmas, you don't just pick a random time of year to fly 3,000 miles. Holly wouldn't have the watch if it hadn't been Christmas! The Christmas wrapping tape would not have been available for John to use on his gun.... This entire plan was staged around the biggest party day of the year in the United states, when people's guard is most down. This was a Christmas movie, from script to execution.
i agree with your wife it is a christmas movie. cause if you stop and think about it. home alone is a movie that doesn't even take place on christmas like die hard did, home alone only took place around the week leading up to christmas (i think it was week) and home alone has the same premise as die hard. tell me if this sounds familiar? a single person forts and disrupts the bad guys plans and tries to survive to see his family at christmas
@@Sarah_Gravydog316 It is an action movie but a Christmas Action movie. No Christmas, no movie. No Christmas party, no robbery, no Christmas party, no invite for the out of town guest. Christmas Action Movie.
I hope I'm not a creep, but ma'am, you are SO cute, the laugh, giggle, and complete enjoyment. You makes these movies better, and hubbie(?)'s knowing smirk makes it even better Love you folks!.
If not for the Christmas Party none of the events would have taken place. The robbery was contingent on coming off as a hostage situation, with limited city resources available. John would not have been there if not for Christmas. It all had to be centered around Christmas. Christmas movie
Definition of a christmas movie: just before the holidays, something comes up to ruin Christmas. The main characters rally and manage to save the day, and everyone gets together in the end to enjoy the holiday. As for the July release Christmas in July since this isn't a typical cookie cutter christmas movie 🎄
Just because I've never seen it referenced in a reaction, the song playing in the limo at the beginning is Run DMC's "Christmas In Hollis (Queens)." It IS Christmas music.
It wasn't uncommon back in the day for summer movies to hit the store shelves around December. Additionally, this is one of the movies that always got played during Christmas movie marathons. Add in that the director wanted the movie to be a joyous experience, the setting, music, and even the fact that it almost seems as if the villains are mostly people you wouldn't mind meeting when they're not working. Combine that with the whole "(character) Saves Christmas", the thing about John just trying to save his wife and all of the hostages (he's never met these people, but is putting himself in harm's way for them, as well as for Holly), his wife being named Holly, the character arc and friendship with Al. The totality of it poits to yes, Die Hard is a Christmas movie, albeit not a typical one.
2 years after this Bruce Willis made "Die Hard 2" and 1 year after that he made "The Last Boy Scout" which is very similar in tone but doesn't get much recognition. It has humor as well as action and big plot. It would be 4 more years before made the next Die Hard sequel. If you haven't seen him in "RED" and "RED 2" you should check them out too, both are excellent.
Die Hard one of the best Christmas Movies ever. It‘s about family, the values, it’s at Christmas, the main character overcome their biggest issues and believes. Wouldn’t it be for Christmas, John would never have been to California, he just wanted to visit his family for Christmas. And the characters change in mind of the Christmas Spirit, don’t be selfish, think about others.
Fun fact: Bruce Willis suffered a permanent hearing injury during the scene where he's under the table and shoots the bad guy that's standing on top of it. The Beretta he was using was modified to shoot blanks and he wasn't wearing hearing protection because it would have been seen in the close up shot.
Matthew, your face when Emily said John's feet were going to get cold. I've checked the list and Last Action Hero isn't on it. I think Emily would like it. Please add it?
1) Awesome reaction (as always)! 2) It is ABSOLUTELY a Christmas movie.😝 3) Kudos to Matthew for becoming quite the straight man to your humor. His deadpan expression to your singing was everything! SO funny! 4) Merry Christmas, Y'all! ❤
Fun fact: The cocaine snorting creep is Supergirl's love interest in the 1984 film. His name is Hart Bochner. Have a very Merry Christmas you two. Cheers 🍕🍻
For a little-known action-comedy (heavy on the comedy), you might like to see "Pass the Ammo." Don't wanna give anything away, but I will say it has a very worthy cast.
Fun fact: When Alan Rickman dropped, that was real fear in his face. He was dropped 40 feet, and was supposed to be dropped on the count of three. The director dropped him on one.
Of course it's a Christmas movie. Even his wife's name is Holly.
Haha I never thought of that.
I will always say this...Alan was ROBBED of an Oscar for this film.
it's a Christmas movie. It's got all the elements. Set in Christmas. He's trying to get to his loved ones. The circumstances brings him closer to his wife cuz of the holidays.

His American accent is supposed to be slightly wonky on purpose

I think everybody needs an Emily in their lives. Gives me pure joy to watch her laugh.
Any movie is a Christmas movie…if you watch it religiously at Christmas time.
But Die Hard is a Christmas movie. As is Lethal Weapon.
Hey, It's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from the Nakatomi building....

I agree Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie.
It's THE Christmas movie.
When Hans falls, the reaction is real. The release was supposed to be on 3, however, they let him go at 2. That's a real shocked face there!
Very true and incredibly planned as its an iconic fall
They talk about that at 26:28
"Oh my God, they just blew up the 'Great Value' Batmobile" is the best thing I've heard all day.
It's about a dude trying to get together with his family on Christmas. It's a dang Christmas movie.
It's not a Christmas movie. It's THEE Christmas movie.

that and it has the good side of humanity and the joy of giving.
ALAN RICKMANS FIRST FILM ROLE. DAMN. BEST VILLAIN OUT THE GATE.
Still miss Alan Rickman. Great actor. One of the best classic villains
Did Hard could be a Harry Potter movie. Spending the night in a large building, avoiding Alan Rickman...
HAHAHAHAHAHA

Die Hard is, at it's core, about forgiveness (of ones self and others), admitting mistakes and bringing families together. With all that and it's Christmas setting, it's a Christmas Movie.
And most Christmas movies actually don't come out during Christmas. Elf, for example (definitely a Christmas movie) was an October release.
Agreed. Ghostbusters 2 was set during Christmas time too, and was released during the summer.
This is the movie that made Bruce a bona fide action star
It's a Christmas movie! McClain would never have been there if it hadn't been Christmas.
Saw this with an Ex who spoke perfect German. Made the movie from a 9 to a 10 with her translating a few seconds faster. Loved it
Definitely a great Christmas movie, Run DMC and Dean Martin Christmas songs, what more do you need!
I haven't seen this movie in years, and I can still quote most of the dialogue. It's so much fun to watch people watch it for the first time!
i agree with your wife it is a christmas movie. cause if you stop and think about it. home alone is a movie that doesn't even take place on christmas like die hard did, home alone only took place around the week leading up to christmas (i think it was week) and home alone has the same premise as die hard. tell me if this sounds familiar? a single person forts and disrupts the bad guys plans and tries to survive to see his family at christmas
I don't understand why people talk about the "debate". It's not a debate, Die Hard is a Christmas movie and some people are wrong. The end.
this isn't a Christmas movie.
It's an action movie.
@@Sarah_Gravydog316 It is an action movie but a Christmas Action movie. No Christmas, no movie. No Christmas party, no robbery, no Christmas party, no invite for the out of town guest. Christmas Action Movie.
This movie is proof that people have always hated the media.
Here we must salute the wonderful William Atherton for his portrayal of the quintessential corporate news scumbag. He nailed it.
It's not Christmas until Hans falls out the building
Then it's New Years Eve. :)
@@mxplixic no it's a Christmas party.
I hope I'm not a creep, but ma'am, you are SO cute, the laugh, giggle, and complete enjoyment. You makes these movies better, and hubbie(?)'s knowing smirk makes it even better Love you folks!.
Awe!! Thank you so much!! 🥰
Cheers and much love,
Emily
I love the look Matthew gives the camera: "See what I have to live with, folks?" Lol
Man, Emily's really funny and creative at these reaction videos! You're a lucky man my dude!
Just because I've never seen it referenced in a reaction, the song playing in the limo at the beginning is Run DMC's "Christmas In Hollis (Queens)." It IS Christmas music.
yes, but this isn't a Christmas movie.
It's an action movie set at Christmastime
I just re-watched this movie a few days ago & thought about the controversy & decided it was a Christmas action movie.
"A very different time" = A better time.
Matthew, your face when Emily said John's feet were going to get cold. I've checked the list and Last Action Hero isn't on it. I think Emily would like it. Please add it?
Rip to a great actor Alan Rickman we still miss you
The inestimable Alan Rickman had done a multitude of things before this, of course - but it always freaks me out to think this was his first movie...
1) Awesome reaction (as always)!
2) It is ABSOLUTELY a Christmas movie.😝
3) Kudos to Matthew for becoming quite the straight man to your humor.
Cheers 🍕🍻
He was also the “bad guy” in the coming of age classic Breaking Away (one of my absolute favorite movies) and he directed the movie PCU.
You know 2020 has hit its high point when Emily is gettin’ down with it to Christmas rap.
Best. Christmas movie. Ever.
For a little-known action-comedy (heavy on the comedy), you might like to see "Pass the Ammo." Don't wanna give anything away, but I will say it has a very worthy cast.
