AIRPLANE! Movie Description:
This spoof comedy takes shots at the slew of disaster movies that were released in the 70s. When the passengers and crew of a jet are incapacitated due to food poisoning, a rogue pilot with a drinking problem must cooperate with his ex-girlfriend turned stewardess to bring the plane to a safe landing.
Airplane! (alternatively titled Flying High!) is a 1980 American parody film written and directed by David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams, and produced by Jon Davison. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson. The film is a parody of the disaster film genre, particularly the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!, from which it borrows the plot and the central characters, as well as many elements from Airport 1975 and other films in the Airport film series. The film is known for its use of surreal humor and its fast-paced slapstick comedy, including visual and verbal puns, gags, and obscure humor.
Airplane! was released by Paramount Pictures and was a critical and financial success, grossing $158 million worldwide against a budget of $3.5 million. The film's creators received the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Comedy, and nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and for the BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay.
In the years since its release, the film's reputation has grown substantially. The film was ranked 6th on Bravo's '100 Funniest Movies'. In a 2007 survey by Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, it was judged the second-greatest comedy of all time, behind Monty Python's Life of Brian. In 2008, it was selected by Empire magazine as one of 'The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time' and in 2012 was voted #1 on the 'The 50 Funniest Comedies Ever' poll. In 2010, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

@@HelloMellowXVI Not a criticism. Just figured you'd find it funny.
The husband and wife arguing about the zones over the PA system are the actual people who recorded the red/white zone announcement that LAX was playing at the time. And they were actually a married couple. I've read that they had a lot of fun parodying themselves for the movie.
The woman's voice is actually the woman who voiced iiPHONE SIRI
Also the dialogue about the abortion came from a discount romance novel one of the writers bought in a nearby pharmacy. They flipped through the book, found that scene and ran with it.

The line "I _am_ serious, and don't call me Shirley!" became the most famous line of Leslie Nielsen's career, and he made it the title of his autobiography.

It is because of this movie.
@@wombatmommy5515 Cool! I didn't know that. It's fun to think that such a ridiculous comedy could actually make such a serious impact like that.
Well, it was already a regulation at that time, but it wasn't at the time of a much earlier movie called Zero Hour, which Airplane is heavily based on, to the point that it replicates some scenes from that movie almost shot for shot, albeit for the sake of comedy
Nobody obeys that rule actually. -a captain
@@ChickenCustomer Well that's less than reassuring. Of course, I shouldn't be surprised...considering they're about 3 sheets to the wind half the time.
Fun fact: the jive talk was mostly improvised by the actors because ZAZ (the writers) didn't think they were sufficient enough in conversational "black street slang". One of my favorite bits in the movie. Easily.
Also, all the bits with Johnny were improvised, since the man who was a close friend of ZAZ, just straight up refused to learn lines, but they knew he was hilariously funny, so they would just write lead ins for him and let him do his thing
I remember they said the whole “jive talk” was influenced by the writers when they saw Shaft and didn’t understand a thing anyone was saying 🤣😂

Everyone talks about what a great comedian Leslie Nielsen was, but what a lot of folks don't realize is that he _wasn't_ a comedian. He'd already had a long career as a dramatic actor, and hadn't thought of doing comedy. But he was approached for this film, as well as Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, and Peter Graves - all dramatic actors. And the main problem was that the actors wanted to _be funny,_ which was NOT what the directors wanted. They told the actors they had to play their parts perfectly straight, or else it wouldn't work. And they were right! (Also, the film is based almost word-for-word on an old movie called "Zero Hour".)
Most people think its based on Airport, but no its Zero Hour. So glad someone else knows this. The writers record late night commercials to spoof, and fell asleep. Zero hour was recorded and they watched it and then they made this. Ive seen Zero hour and its actually a decent drama.
Watch Leslie Nielsen in Forbidden Plant, which is basically Shakespeare's The Tempest.
I know! I took a film elective in high school and we watched The Poseidon Adventure, High Noon, then Airplane. My group presented on Airplane, so I made sure to mention that Leslie Nielsen was a dramatic actor in the former, and Lloyd Birdges was in the latter (he was the deputy guy)
@@richardsturges2736 It's understandable why people would think it was based on Airport, since that movie had been a hit just a few years before.
Yeah they bought the rights to Zero Hour! for a ridiculously cheap amount just to make sure they wouldn't be sued then everyone thinks it's a parody of a different film. Bonus fact after the film the directors bought a horse and called it "it's all pink" and told the jokey don't worry about winning just hug the inside line to force the commentator to say....
It's all pink on the inside.
That's what I heard anyway and I pray to God it's true.
@@baguaboy4042 That did happen. One of the people involved in making "Airplane!" told this story in an interview. He started by saying "How far would these guys go for a joke?"...
If you are confused about why Kareem Jabbar is hiding his identity in this movie, it's because the film is a parody of a 1957 film "Zero Hour". In Zero Hour, NFL star Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hersch plays the co-pilot, despite having no prior acting experience. He's basically in the role of a pilot for no reason, and there is no reference to his NFL career. So in this film, the joke is that Abdul-Jabbar is trying to just play the role of a pilot, but everyone keeps recognizing him as an NBA player, and he ultimately can't keep that aspect hidden.
This movie still holds up over time. Even to this day when I drink something and it randomly spills on my face I retort with "damn... I have a drinking problem". You know a comedy is good when 40-50 years later it's relevant and makes you laugh uncontrollably.
Before 9/11 people asking for charitable donations and passing out religious pamphlets could go all over the airport. It got to the point that it was really annoying.
Wow That’s Crazy Didn’t Even Know That
Before 9/11. You could go "into that little room where the pilot sits" even if you weren't on the flight but your friend or family member were. It was cool looking in the cockpit.
Airports were a lot different back then.
@@HelloMellowXVI One time in the mid '70s at O'Hare Airport, they used to drop fake bills on the floor. A Hare Krishna asked my dad for a donation. My dad gave the Hare Krishna a fake $20 dollar bill he found on the floor. The hare Krishna said: "This is phony" to which my dad replied "So are you". And walked away.
Yeah, that was really annoying back then.......so anyway, I'd like to talk to you about your extended vehicle warranty......
@@garysmith3037 - with that extended warranty. Does that cover the horse & buggy?? Or only 2 halves of a coconut so I can bang them together to pretend to have a horse while pulling my buggy. Can I have answer will fast?? Have to churn the butter & put up a barn by sundown.
That kids line "I like it black, like my men" fucking kills me everytime. Not to mention the cockpit stuff. This movie is just so good, it'd NEVER be made nowadays though.
My fav is when the old lady asks him if he is nervous. lol
And the woman at the information desk asking, 'Should I fake my orgasms in future?'
i wish they had more questions from Captain Oveur lol
"I just want to tell you both good luck, we're all counting on you."
Nielson repeated that line at the end of Scary Movie 3
Few people catch on to the fact that this is a jet plane, but the engine noises you hear are propellers. :D
"Already we just hitting the absurdity" - Airplane! is the movie that defined "absurdity" for all movies to come.
I have probably seen this movie more than 100 times, and it still cracks me up every time.
My dad's was small plane pilot..when we saw this together we busted up..
and the jets call letters were different..
One of the things that made this movie so funny was they got famous, serious actors ( Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves etc...) and had them play it totally straight while insanity ensued around them. It was a truly unique film.
"Boy, I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue!"
Also Robert Stack.
He called the acting "Meh", which leads me to believe he didn't get the deadpan humour. He compared it to the Mel Brooks comedies, where the comedy was more broad.
Its kinda weird thinking of Leslie Nielsen as a serious dramatic actor after this, but you watch his earlier roles like Forbidden Planet, the man had range and absolutely barrels of charisma
Definitely unique in that this comedy had multiple straight men.

I'm impressed you knew who Jimmy Walker was. There is a lot of humor in this show that was specific to the time. Like the old white lady that can speak Jive. That was June Cleaver. Haha.

The “drinking problem” bit is my favorite.
This movie came out in 1980, and people still quote lines to this day, especially “and don’t call me Shirley” “I picked he wrong week to stop sniffing glue.”

@@HelloMellowXVI great reaction, and finally a reactor who recognized Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Am I getting that old? Guy's still a legend. This movie was absurd, and one of the first of it's kind. It was all so dead pan, the actors themselves had zero clue what they were getting involved in, or that the material itself was even funny, which is how the director wanted it.
There was an emergency on an actual airplane and the pilot said the sniffing glue line to the other pilots. (Southwest flight 1248)
I was backpacking around Asia years ago and stuck in this little port in Cambodia during a storm. I definitely enjoyed your take on the movie, glad you enjoyed it. Just one minor thing, at 6:37, it's obviously Roger Murdock that came on board the plane, a simple pilot, not this Kareem fellow, honest mistake.

So, when my buddy was getting married, we're walking into the rehearsal and I look over and ask him "nervous?" He laughs and says "yeah, dude." I naturally respond "first time?" I softly drop my head and reply "oh, I was asking if it was your first time being nervous, cuz I've been nervous lots of times." He started laughing so hard, stopped and said "and now I'm no longer nervous. Damn you." With a big shit eating grin on his face. Best airplane reference of my life

Absolutely timeless. This has to be near the top of the jokes per second scale, from visual gags to puns. It just doesn't let up for a minute!
Don't like this joke? Don't worry there's another one coming in a couple of seconds.
"Police Squad!" also starring Leslie Nielsen has so many more jokes per minute and it stopped airing because a guy who owned the compay making the series said there were so many jokes people would not have time to react.

@@hengineer With the "accidental" copy of the beach scene in From Here to Eternity.
Fun fact: at around 20 seconds between average laughs, this movie is objectively the funniest in history!
It's a credit to the writers that they could reuse one joke, the literal interpretation, over and over but still keep it funny.
Also, the spear in the wall is a callback to the driving scene when they were being chased by Indians.
Two jokes people often miss are when the plane crashes through the window near the beginning, a woman throws her baby in the air as she's driving for cover. And whenever they show an exterior shot of the plane the sound is of propellers, not a jet.
Arent the guys on the runway the directors too?

Leslie Nielsen was also in the sci-fi movie "Forbidden planet". That movie is pretty old and has a lot fewer effects than movies today, but at least it has got a pretty good plotline.
Yes, prior to this film, Neilson was known as a highly respected dramatic character actor. Airplane marked the point where he switched to comedy. As for Forbidden Planet, it has pretty amazing special effects for the 1950s
One of the best version of Shakespeare's "The Tempest." Also the debut of Robby the Robot. "Forbidden Planet" is one of the best science fiction movies ever made.
'Taming of the Shrew' but in space.
Wonderful Science Fiction Classic. The Special Effects are out of an animation tradition rather than the kind of CGI we are used to seeing, but they actually hold up well. Especially the effects used for 'the monster' and those used to portray the alien installation. It is also fun to see Leslie Nielson playing such a straightforward character, really a sort of prototype of Star Trek's Captain Kirk in a lot of ways. So different from this 'Airplane' comedy style he's become so known for. Robbie the Robot was also instantly iconic. Amazing design, especially with the neon lighting and his droll humor.

I saw this on either Cinemax or HBO about five months after it hit the theaters. This is just one ridiculously side-splitting movie that over 40 years later, is just as funny the first time as it the 21st time. It just never gets old. The fact that Lloyd Bridges, Leslie Nielsen, Peter Graves and Robert Stack did everything straight-faced, mad it even funnier. Check out "POLICE SQUAD (In Color)". It's a reference to the "Mayo Clinic" which is a very famous medical center in real life.
Also if you listen carefully, right after the loudspeaker says "no the white phone"
Someone is heard laughing in the background.
I'm so glad this movie was made back in the 80s, because there is no way in HELL 90% of the jokes would've made it past the sensors. This movie is a classic
This movie never stops being a treat.
You'll come back to it like an itch you want to scratch.
Love watching someone watch this timeless comedy classic for the first time. Since you liked this movie, The Naked Gun is a must to react to. Pretty sure you will love it. It’s nonstop jokes like Airplane!
You've got my respect for playing Ecstasy of Gold in your outro.
Will Always Be My Theme Song
Thanks for posting this! I been searching for a while for the song
I saw this movie some 35 years ago and its jokes with literal interpretations of what others say inspired me to create one.
One day I was up on the nearby mountain, close to a water reservoir locally know as the Alvao Dam (or just "the Dam", being the only one around...), when a car stopped and the driver addressed me for directions: “Could you tell me how to get to the Dam?"
They were precisely *coming* from the dam, so I realised they hadn't recognised it as such. (They were probably expecting a big dam, when in fact it's a rather small one.)
So I said: "You have to go back, you just passed it."
"You mean, that lake a few km back is the Dam?"
Me (deadpan): "No. That's water. The Dam is the wall preventing the water from flowing down the mountain."
They just looked at me in disbelief but I managed to remain serious. :D
"Can somebody get this man a straw!?" made me legit laugh out loud.
I am serious, and don't call me Shirley.
Lots of people think that joke originated with this film but Groucho Marx used it back in the 1930's.
If there was a drinking game where you had to do a shot every time you said damn in this video, you would be totally hammered in the first two minutes. LOL. Love your reaction dude, merry Christmas.
Lmao Merry Christmas, Aye We Might Do Something Like That
Love when Randy cries because she’s 26 and not married then the woman just makes her feel worse and then she thanks everyone at the end like it was a pleasant flight 😂😂
seeing this movie as a teenager at the theater, I never laughed so hard in my life and memorized almost every line .. my friends and I would do lines from the movie, ....everyday
ME TOO!!!!!
I saw this movie in the theatre when it first came out. The whole audience was in stitches
Same here. I was 11 or 12 at the time. Just fantastic.
Love the extra mile you go in producing your reactions. Keep up the good work.
Thank You So Much. I Really Appreciate That Alot, Motivates Me
My favorite zany comedy! A joke a minute, at least! And being in a family of pilots sure helps =D My dad is a private pilot, flight instructor, and an experienced aerobatic pilot. He says pretty much anyone with a pilot's license could get a jet liner safely on the ground (for the people, the plane would most likely get messed up), with a little talking down, especially where the instruments are. Jet liners are apparently made stupidly easy to fly, so they don't need to train pilots as long to fly them. Comforting! Still, the safest way to travel (before corona)
The vulture part killed me
Fun fact: this movie was a near carbon copy of an older film called Zero Hour. The lines are almost all the same. They changed the inflection and added some lines to make a serious disaster film into a comedy.
I'm so glad you noticed the gag where Kramer walks through the mirror! Few people do.
This movie never gets old. Barbara Billingsley from Leave it to Beaver was the whitest white actress they could find to talk Jive. The LAX announcers were a married couple and were the LAX announcers parodying their own job. The bar scene had Striker playing the role of an air force pilot while wearing navy dress whites. The doctor from the Mayo Clinic with the donor heart was sitting in front of cabinets full of Mayonnaise. The external sounds were propellers as an homage to Zero Hour, despite it being a jet airliner. And much of the movie was line for line from Zero Hour, with comedy added. The scale of the comedy unfolds with every subsequent viewing.
The line “Excuse me stewardess I speak Jive” will never fail to put me in stitches
I can't wait for you to see this film again - hopefully in a crowded theater. There are SO many gags in this film... even 3rd and 4th time, you can find new jokes.
Hi MellVerse....I'm really impressed you recognized Jimmy Walker as JJ. Not many of this generation have even HEARD of "Good Times." Most people don't even recognize Jimmy, either LOL!
Wassup Man, I Don't Know A lot Of Classics But I Know Me Some Good Times! Lmao 😆
@@HelloMellowXVI Then you were exposed to the good stuff, my friend. I watched that show in its first run and loved it.
@@HelloMellowXVI fun fact: Good Times is being brought back as an animated show.
Man I was a little down mentally this particular time but when I watched the video I was laughing with you and cheered me up :D
My friends and I were teens when this came out. We saw it at the drive in so we LAUGHED so hard we cried. Top Secret is another fantastic movie from the same team.
Aww, this was one of the first movies I have ever seen. It pretty much defined my sense of humor :) :) Simpler and more innocent times for sure. At least you could joke about pretty much everything. And people ask me why i don't like modern cinema all that much :) :) Because they don't have the balls to do stuff like this anymore :)
In case you didn't know, the main flight attendant that is the ex is Julie Haggarty, who plays the mom in She's the Man (w/ Amanda Bynes, which is based on Shakespeare's 12th Night). The older lady @ abt 25:21, is Barbara Billingsly, who played the mom (June Cleaver) in the classic TV show, Leave it to Beaver (1957-1963).
Little fun fact. The Automatic Pilot is credited as “Otto” in the end credits.
Can you react to Robin Hood: men in tights it’s one of my personal favorites
You appeared in my recommended videos an hour or so ago and your videos are just the best random recommend I've had in a while. I adore your sincere reactions and, I hope this doesn't sound condescending or anything, but your laugh is one of the sweetest and most genuine I've heard in a long while. It's so infectious! I haven't seen some of these films since I was much much younger, and it's like watching them for the first time all over again. It's been a long year and it's so nice to have something to laugh along with. Stay safe and keep going with this!
Awe Wow, Thank You So Much. Definitely Gave Me Some Motivation Today And Made My Day. I Appreciate You
The late Robert Stack is the guy in the trench coat that narrated the TV Series "Unsolved Mysteries" for us in the 90s.
R.I.P Robert Stack
But I loved Wrongfully Accused with Leslie Nielson. I have it on video and DVD.
I love the long setup for the Kareem joke. The laker shorts 😭😂
