Remember when they used to make toys from R-rated movies like this, and marketed them to impressionable young kids? Good times, good times.
Had a Robocop figure from back then. You put caps in a spot in his back, and pulled a switch to make smoke and gun sounds come out. Good stuff.
Toys? They made cartoons. Robocop, Rambo, Highlander!
Don't forget the arcade and video games. I had the Game Boy game when it first came out. Was pretty fun but hard.
That was one of the strangest trends of the 80's. RAMBO (Rated R for ultra violence) gets a cartoon, and a breakfast cereal. POLICE ACADEMY (Rated R for sexual humor, and nudity) gets a cartoon, and action figures. By the time the 90's rolled around, I was expecting a "Basic Instinct" cartoon, and home game. You know... for kids!

Funny fact- When Emil goes up to Leon begging for help after he'd been deformed by the toxic waste, they didn't show the actor playing Leon what Emil looked like in make-up, so his reaction and scream were genuine.

I never ever knew that! Thank you for that information!
Ok, imagine it's 1987, and Robocop is in theaters right around your 10th birthday, and you don't know much about it, but it sounds interesting, so you ask your dad to take you to see as a birthday present. And you've never really seen any violent movie on the big screen before, never mind an ultra-graphic one like this. This movie holds a special place in my heart as my first experience of receiving trauma as a childhood birthday present. My innocence was lost that day, folks.🤯😵🥳
I was a senior in High School when I saw "Robocop"....but I WAS 11 when I saw "Alien" in the theater, so I know a little bit about seeing an age inappropriate film that traumatizes you.
Nah, saw this on video. One person rents it, and is seen by as many households before the 48hr rental is over. Any 15 or 18 film did the rounds.
Same! I was 12 and me and my three buddies snuck in by buying another ticket for another movie. After that Ed scene, we were traumatized. Neither one of us had seen a movie so violent. It was so shocking, we all thought we might’ve made a mistake, but damn did we get over it. We couldn’t shut up about that movie for weeks. Lol!
It was a great movie but 3 years earlier I saw The Terminator which I think is the best Sci Fi movie ever.
Yep watched this when I was 9!! 😳
"You're still people, baby."
I've seen this film countless times, read numerous articles about it, studied it in film school, and I have never once heard its main theme stated so perfectly.
i mean..., it is ONE of the big themes of the Cyberpunk genre.
His pistol, "the auto 9" as its known in robocop lore, is actually a modified beretta 93R machine pistol.
Heavily modded, actually working but can only use blank round
@@GrimThe13 by all accounts it could still make a mess. Especially when fired off in a hotel shower......lol
@@EdgyNumber1 I wonder what story is behind that comment
@@GrimThe13 Well basically when Verhoeven and one of his staff got hold of the completed weapon, they got a bit excited couldn't help themselves. So they tried it out, firing into the shower (blanks of course) but after the air cleared all the resulting powder residue made an absolute mess all over the place. It was in mentioned in an interview with him somewhere.
"DEAD OR ALIVE... YOU'RE GOING TO SUBSCRIBE TO THIS CHANNEL."
"Bitches leave" is the best line in cinematic history. By far..
And when filming the scene, the director didn't realize the meaning of it so he would things along the lines of "Okay, Kurtwood comes in, bitches go out the door, bitches ask Miguel to call them; where are the bitches?"
I've actually seen it used in other movies by criminals characters.
I think I say this for a lot of us but Emily is just adorable to watch these classics alongside. Fast becoming my favourite channel. Thumbs up from The UK 👍
She absolutely is adorable. I love the dynamic between her and Matt too.
Only time she annoyed me was when she kept making a big fuss over Edward Furlong in the T2 reaction.
You guys should look up Peter Wellers talks on the Robocop shoot and how the character evolved based on the costume. Originally the movement was meant to be slick and ffluid but the suit was quite cumbersome so they had to revise movement to what we have today.
Peter Weller is an excellent lecturer and and absolute treasure to the acting community :)
“Young Willford Brimly just killed doctor Phil” lmao 😂
The medical crew tending to the dying Murphy were actual medical personnel, and were basically given the scenario and told to make it sound medical. The writer said he wished he could claim credit for "let's go ahead and shock a flatline and let's quit."
Thumbs up for "Oh my God you killed Kenny" LOL
Those Bastards!!!
YOU BASTARDS!!!!
That little smile on your face knowing what was coming with the ED-209 scene at the beginning was great.
This movie is so much better as an adult than as a kid. The satire really punches through.
17:05 After all these years, I just now realized that Dick Jones dropped a deuce, didn't wash his hands, then ran his fingers through homeboy's hair. 🤣
🤣🤣😂😂yep
Oh yes. That made me gag in the cinema, way back
@Teddy G
🤢🤮
The Hospital scene when they're working on Murphy is real. It's real on the sense that the filmmakers hired actual Doctors and Nurses, gave them a scenario of what happened and told them to do what they would if it was an actual situation.
Not a doctor here or familiar with medical procedures, so I wonder why that particular scene would even be neccessary when Murphy got shot in the head and was obviously dead before arriving to the hospital.
Which is really strange, because you never shock a flatline, so why would a medical professional say that?
@Necramonium Murphy's situation and the way he got shot gives no indication anything like that would be possible with him. Thanks for your answer though.
@@JDelwynn its still a movie so they might have intended him to die in one way when the hospital scene was filmed and then when they filmed the death they might have changed it because it worked better on film
@@DreamyWoIf Sure, but if he still had a pulse and was breathing (no obvious damage to the brain stem or autonomic functions) they'd have rushed him to an ER regardless.

You've seen Verhoeven satirize colonization/exploitation (Total Recall) and the privatization/militarization of police (Robocop). Now you need to see him satirize fascism. Would you like to know more?

Also the music is by Basil Poledouris, not sure if Conan's going on this series or the Rewatch one, but he did the music for that too.
When I hear the music in Robocop, I instantly think of Conan. I keep expecting Conan to walk into the scene, lol.
He also did The Hunt For Red October. I love that score.
Not to mention the critically acclaimed Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. I think he even did Hot Shots Part Deux.
Also 2 other faves.. The Hunt for Red October and Starship Troopers are amazing scores
And Under Siege 2!
"This has some gratuitous violence, right?"
Oh sweet summer child. You. Have. NO. IDEA!
It's a perfect movie in so much that everything it sets out to do, it executes flawlessly.
Everything except those damn monkey arms on plummeting Dick Jones. Be a perfect 10 if not for that one messed up special effect right at the end. :P
@@carn9507 apparently the reason for that was that it was one of the last effects shots made for the movie, before it was locked down (before celluloid duplication & distribution) and they had to rush it. The moulds warped in the oven, resulting in the extended arms, even Paul Verhoeven mentions it on the director's commentary if I recall.
As a kid, the most horrifying scenes were Murphy's death scene and Ew-mil/Toxic Waste guy. Enough to put me off the noodles I was eating at the time for life.
As a grown up, what scared me most was the boardroom death by ED-209. Not the death itself (which is still pretty horrifying) but the reaction to it in how it was seen as a disappointment and a costly glitch.
Also corporate takeover of the police force is too relevant right now.
That boardroom scene is actually meant to be humorous. Siskel & Ebert talked about laughing their butts off during that scene. Especially w/ someone saying to call a medic afterwards.
ED 209 scared me when I was a kid. Today it's the politicians and feminists that scare me the most.

First of all, I just want to say that "RoboCop" is one of my all time favorite films! I'm so happy you finally got to see it, and even happier than you LOVED IT!
TRIVIA TIME! This movie was followed by 2 sequels, 2 live action TV shows, 2 different cartoon series, and the 2nd attempt at a reboot is currently in the works!
-The type of gun that was used for RoboCop was a Beretta 93R machine pistol (the Auto 9) which had a compensator and some decorative dressing added to it to increase the size of the gun in his massive hand.
-Depending on what type of a shot they were working on, the RoboCop suit could weigh anywhere between 25 to 80 lbs! When scenes required Robo to walk up stairs, or get out of a car, Peter Weller only wore the top half of the Robo-suit, and they would only shoot him from the waist up.
-Peter Weller had worked with a mime coach for weeks to learn how to move like a robot properly. But, by the time he got fitted into his costume, none of the moves they had been rehearsing on would work. So, they had to halt production so Weller could learn to mime again with the suit on.
Oh, I could go on, and on, and on about this movie!
Don´t forget the video games, especially the PC ones, which were very good (for the time).
25:55, "His mutant name? Ewww-mil!" A genuine laugh-out-loud moment! 😆😆😆

Great movie. Amazing cast. Great Theme. Musical score is great.
You want a Redford/Newman classic you GOT to go with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
@@eeduranti I've seen it many times, but I still like The Sting better. Just MO but they are both worthy of watching. I've just never seen anyone react to "The Sting", whereas I have seen reactions to Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.
Can't beat the poker game scene from The Sting. Totally Epic.
@B M They are both great movies, but I have yet to see a reaction to "The Sting". But I also like it more, not to say anything bad about BC & the Sundance Kid.
I'm still waiting for them to review Animal House since I know they like comedies.
I would also like to see them review "Porky's" but that would require some serious editing. Especially the shower scene which leads up to one of the funniest scenes with Ms. Balbricker, the Boys' gym teachers and the principal. No matter how many times I see that scene I'm in tears from laughing. And anyone who has seen Porky's knows the scene I'm probably talking about.
I said it before and I'll say it again: Paul Verhoeven is an underrated director.

Didn't see either of these on the list, but thinking you'd like both Commando (1985) and The Running Man (1987).
Did you notice the mileage that the 6000SUX achieves, to warrant the "Something that goes really fast and gets really shitty gas mileage" quote? The advert for it lists it at the bottom of the screen "8.2 M.P.G." - "An American Tradition" indeed.

The Warriors.
Midnight run is classic.
20:16 -- Considering this was released in 1987.... It would be almost 10 years until DVD was invented. Whomever wrote this, nailed it..
The director confirmed that Robocop is a subversive take on Jesus Christ. In the beginning, Murphy is shot in a torturous manner reminiscent of crucifixion, he is returned to life to save people, and in the end, he walks on water and his side is pierced by a spear.
Yeah, but instead of forgiven sins, he shoots rapists in the dick.

@@Spthomas47 It's awful
@@Spthomas47 For me, the biggest problem with the remake is that Murphy had his memories and his wife and son and doctor fighting for him to be recognized as a human being from the very beginning, and that seriously weakened the tragedy-then-triumph of the Murphy regaining his humanity theme that made audiences want to cheer when The Old Man asked "What's your name, son?" and he answered "MURPHY" in the original.

I still think it's the best movie ever made. It has everything: action, comedy, drama, sci fi, a good hero you root for, great villains you hate, good music, good story, cool special effects (I miss the times where movies were NOT 90% CGI and the actors were not just standing in front of a green screen), I love this movie!!. As a kid, I remember building Ed-209 out of legos a few times. And each time he’d look a little different than the last. Know why? Cause we didn’t have specific Lego build kits like they do nowadays-NO! We just scraped together all our shit and used a little thing called “imagination”. That’s why Ed was 15 different colors!

I HIGHLY recommend you guys watch "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (1963). The movie is wildly hilarious and so chaotic!
Dick Shawn was great in it. Still loved him more in the Producers.
Also, Irvin Kershner who directed Empire Strikes Back, directed the sequel and Frank Miller wrote it. The gun was a modified Beretta M93R 9mm machine pistol with a bunch of awesome cosmetics to make it look like "a coffin" ,the suit weighed around 60 lbs i believe and Peter Weller studied with a famous Israeli mime to get the movement right. They made a lighter and bluer suit for the sequel also. The woman that Boddiker leers at on the way up to Jones' office, is actually Kurtwood Smith's wife lol

The movie initially got an X rating from the MPAA for violence, as the initial cut featured ED-209 continuing to shoot Kenny for an additional 30 seconds.
In some scenes, Peter Weller had headphones on under his helmet and was listening to music on his Walkman. In the scene in the factory when he guns everyone down and arrests Clarence, I believe he said he was listening to the Talking Heads.

@@memnarch129 Right. If you look it up on UA-cam, the cadence of the burst matches, too.
18:13; “that’s why you wear a helmet.” I was dying 😂
15:35 - Yeah, like that wouldn't make for an awkward work environment. "Hey, guy, remember when you held us all hostage at gunpoint? Wasn't that a hoot?"
@28:55....."murder, it's ooookkkkk"....that smile and thumbs up always gets me, lol
3:51 YEAH, YOU KNOW ME!!
14:22 Fun fact: Basil Pouledoris (the one who scored this movie) and Miguel Ferrer were featured in "Hot Shots Part Deux".
The full suit weighted nearly 80 pounds but was later lightened by using different materials. Fitting Peter Weller into the suit would take approximately 6 to 8 hours every day. In scenes when he is only seen from the waist up, he's not wearing the legs / lower portion. Whenever he was in the car, it was impossible to wear the lower half. -- The gun is called an "Auto-9" although no such firearm actually existed.. It was a heavily modified Beretta 93-R custom made by Randy Moore.
