Today we are going to be discussing Lochtegate. The Ryan Lochte lie scandal that took place at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Ryan Lochte's controversy was so bad that it fundementally destroyed his career afterwards. The craziest part about Lochte's story is that it was 99% true.

Wait, so Lochte actually did get held up?! How am I just now now hearing about this in 2024? Media did that man dirty.
Never believe what the media says.
Yeah, that's completely different from how I remember it going down. That's crazy, how much the media twisted his story.
He wasn't held up. Armed security guards demanded they pay for the sign, and nowhere in this video is it confirmed that their wallets were taken
That literally sounds like the definition of being detained lol getting "held up" is exactly what happened
That’s why I sometimes think news channels are no different from gossip channels. Yes , Locte acted stupid and wanted to flex the gun point for wtv reason …but this doesn’t excuse the fabricated facts from the authorities reported by news channels. He did not deserve to get his entire reputation ruined like that imo .
The fact that news channels were trying to call this 28+ year old a “kid” is hilarious
More so based on his actions.. that of a spoiled child.
Sorry if that's a good example of a "man" to you ... Hahaha
i mean he's a kid in a adult body so they're somewhat right tho
Still not as crazy as knocking over a sign in a third world sh*t hole and ending your career 😂
That’s called white privilege
Being drunk in a foreign country is so dangerous. There will be always some people just waiting to have reason to rip them off. Being hold at gunpoint and yelled at in a foreign langauge is crazy.
Nah not any country just Brazil
its made worse that when he went through this terrifying situations, he didn't get help, he was called racist for experiencing danger in a dangerous country. Stereotypes aren't true. Reputations are. And unfortunately Brazil has a reputation not a stereotype.

@@noellefritz5678it isn’t even a reputation it’s just the truth. People don’t wanna accept reality when it goes against their political narrative but it simply is what it is.
So to summarise:
- Swimmer gets drunk, pulls down a sign from a wall.
- Armed men see this and pull their guns on him and his friends, and demand money.
- He then gives an interview whilst still drunk and didn't get the facts 100% accurate.
- He later admits to the vandalism and says that the gun wasn't to his head.
- But him and his friends were STILL held at gunpoint until they gave over money to random men.
So what should the punishment be? 🤔
1. Be made to pay for the damage and issue a public apology?
2. Be arrested and sentenced for the vandalism?
3. Loose all of your sponsorships, your career, and be vilified for being held at gunpoint until you gave over yours and your friends money to random men.
This is crazy.
Yah it doesn't make any sense.
@@Hinodei It's absolutely ridiculous isn't it?

this is the goofiest way to have ur career ended. yea he might if drunkenly lied but I don’t see it being that big of a deal honestly
it was barely a lie too
His mom screwed him over, and she refuses, to this day, to apologize to her son.
even tho your right but i can see how it might of been a big deal to ppl of Brazil overall. Theit country already looks bad in the media because Cartels and Cooked cops... then 2016 was the Trump year so America was becoming super open about the racism here at the time also big hate on immigrants and any non white race was growing... combine with Lochte being the exact image of what ppl outside of America picture as American saying he was robbed. All that combined made it auto target time for Lochte. It was just bad timing for all those events... there was no way they was gonna not ruin his whole career.
he didn't "drunkenly lie" though. He doubled down while sober. And it is a lie to omit the part of the story that could explain the "robbers" behavior: aka being shown the damaged sign. But he relied on his credibility being an athlete and being a "good" white guy who isn't a thug unlike brazilians
@@VerticalSpectaclewhat are you talking about? when he talked about it the second time is when he stated that they just pointed a gun at him and not directly at his head, which was the truthful version. stop spewing lies.

Thats how they do it in Brazil!
He didnt get "held up" He was "held accountable" for breaking a sign. I dont know how you watched that video and didnt understand the point of the story but he was being a drunk, obnoxious American tourist and was breaking things for fun and a bunch of Brazilian gas station SECURITY GUARDS held him accountable and made him pay for the damages. I wish we did this in teh US but if you are still confused, in Brazil they point a gun at you when you break their shit. He wasn't a completely innocent person who was "robbed", he broke their shit and they pulled a gun on him and made him pay for it. Then he lied about it and acted like he was completely innocent and "robbed". I'm sure those SECURITY GUARDS were sick and tired of drunk Americans' bullshit. Jesus Christ get some education.
and then he got robbed again by that pr company, they didn't do anything for him

Wow I remember when this happened and not a single network reported on the truth. I remember every story saying he was drunk, vandalized the bathroom and lied about being held at gun point. Such a shame he lost so much
I was overseas at the time and I remember the exact same thing being reported by American news channels.
His only mistake was trying to make up a story and then apologizing.
NEVER APOLOGIZE.
His PR team really ruined his career ig, now that I think about it. Even if he wanted to apologize, he only needed to do so for knocking off the sign and peeing outside, bc that's all he did lol
This is something not talked about but a while back, 6 Navy seals admitted to murders they didn’t commit and got locked up for ungodly amounts of time.
Recently in the internet, someone named GeorgeNotFound apologized for something that is genuinely not too bad
That footage towards the end where he looked like he was about to cry almost made me cry. You can tell when he said he sometimes thinks it'd be better if he went to sleep and never woke up would be better for everyone else. He wasn't saying it as a way to garner sympathy. He actually meant it. He was so broken, so tired of everything going wrong, and tired of feeling like he let everyone down. He felt like he let down his family, his country, and other swimmers... He just looked like he was over all of it. I also remember back when it was being reported. First, that he had been held up, then that he was lying, and basically nothing really after that. I don't remember anything coming out after that which was unfortunate. He had been labeled a liar by the world's media. All because he embellished part of the story while he was still under the influence and had been up for over 24 hours. Poor guy. Glad his GF (now wife) stood by him and saw the positive in him. He has a beautiful family and it seems like life is much better now.
Dude was an arrogant douche. He completely left out the fact he ripped down that sign and was pissing all over the place. So while technically his lie wasnt that bad, he left out the most important parts of the story to make himself seem innocent. Its baffling the US Olympic team believed an obviously fabricated story by a notoriously corrupt government... in a country where paying your way out of police interaction is the norm. The sign wasn't broken. They nocked a paper/cardboard sign out of a metal frame. Metal frame was intact and the cardboard/plastic-board sign could be put back in... he was robbed at gun point.

He buckled very quickly without a fight, why? dude probably never been bullied his entire life
He wasn't trying to be cool for the cameras, he was portraying himself as a victim of crime in the country when actually he was the perpetrator of drunken vandalism. It further made him look like a coward when he fled the country before Brazilian authorities could stop him, and even worse, abandoned his teammates there.
If Lochte was so innocent, why did the police stop him from leaving? It's because they didn't want him to flee the scene of the vandalism that was caused. In those countries, people flee and avoid any type of trial, and the victim has to take the loss.
Yes, it was just a sign and the police exaggerated that the bathroom was damaged, but the tone Lochte set in the first interviews was him being a victim which undoubtedly irked the Brazilian authorities when that was far from the truth, and they retaliated by adding and fabricating the bathroom vandalism.

@@poppythedogofwonders tru, "canceling" is as old as humans are. But the internet indeed makes it easier in some ways to do so
They really pulled up at his dancing gig like what?? Lmao.. homie wasn’t even in the wrong.
He didn’t deserve any of that. It wasn’t like he lied or anything… media sometimes can be very cruel
It literally says on the video and proves how he lied but okay.
Right it wasn't even a lie. He just twisted some things around but said the exact same thing. People do it all the time. Especially if you're trying to re tell something still drunk. But the media flat out lied and it's refreshing to see people stand up and not do fake apologies anymore. F them.
@@sixohninereally? Bc what I heard is a security guard held them at gunpoint and took there money. No one spoke there language and he thought he was a cop. Sounds pretty accurate to what he said. Not like the monkey that robbed him was going to buy a new sign. The country is a sh*t hole and no one could even tell the sign was gone 😂
@@sixohninehe didn’t lie about the fact it did indeed happen, he just got a few minor details wrong. And yet, they acted as if the whole damn thing was a lie.
@@qbcomicaddict2590 nice to see how you talk about brazilian people. In this video it shows how he said he was robbed at gun point while having a gun to his forehead and whatnot. In this video it also says how the security guard used the gun to control the scene, then a person translated for em so they knew what was going on, and what was going on was that he was forced to pay for some damages he caused.
great swimmer and absolute airhead lol
Lol
I know you get this a lot but your transition to talking about sponsors is top tier 👌
