Similar for me, while I’m aware of Angel and Copperfield, I kept up with Blaine over time. Dude mystified me as a child and still does somewhat today. His aura is what captivated me, regardless of the complexity of the tricks. It’s how they were done.
Like a famous chef, it’s not the ingredients, but how they’re prepared.

I actually got to meet him in middle school. He came to do like a mini show in the auditorium. I didn’t get to go to the auditorium for the mini show. But thankfully, afterwards he went to different classrooms to do tricks. In my classroom, he did a generic take a kids watch without him looking trick, but then he went over to our turtle cage, picked one up and freaking swallowed it. All of us lost our minds. It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. Then he coughed it back up, and put it back. We learned later that it was planned out earlier, and our teacher was in it. He actually brought his own turtle, and used slight of hand to act like he used our turtle. But this guy really swallowed a freaking turtle, and coughed it back up right in front of us. Some of the students were afraid to give him a high five before he left. That’s my only good memory from middle school.😅

A little personal story about David Blaine if I can. I had the opportunity to work with him for several weeks while he was becoming a hot air balloon pilot in preparation for his gas balloon adventure to 20,000 feet. It was one of the memorable times in my life. He always carried a deck of cards with him and when we landed the hot air balloon in a neighborhood or we went to dinner he showed us card tricks. No cameras, no gimmicks, we were there only inches away from him. I am stil amazed. Anyway, we were talking about somebody who, actually, rode a hot air balloon on TOP of the balloon while in flight. Mr Blaine immediately asked if he could do that, no hesitation. Something like that is not done in a split second, but if it could be done he would have done it. Mr Blaine, I admire you and all you have accomplished. I don't know what goes on in your head, but I wish I had some of it. Good luck in all you do.

His public failures are why he's huge. Knowing the artist will always succeed takes the joy and mystery away. With Blaine, you legitimately have no idea if he's staging or sincere. Since you'll never be able to read him, you'll always have mystery. And his failures prove some of his material isn't faked. This man figured out what makes magic special - the wonder - and made sure no matter how long you follow him, you'll always wonder.

Vertigo is insane. Standing upright, with nothing to lean or sit against for 2 days and nights is such a mind blowing feat. For comparison, Im in the military and have attended numerous selections for various units and programs, the kind of place where you are constantly subject to heinous physical scrutiny. People that attend these selections have to be incredibly physically fit and prepared, the wash out rates are usually above at least 60%. In those types of places, oftentimes a form of punishment or testing is prolonged standing in one place. The longest I ever had to stand in one place was 12 hours, and that was among the hardest things I have done in my life, harder than running upwards of 20 miles with weight, harder than swimming for miles and miles, harder than doing all the push ups. It hurts your entire musculoskeletal system and the urge to lean against something gets stronger by the minute. The fact he did this for 2 days and nights absolutely blows my mind.

It really does suck people can't just enjoy it for what it is. David is AMAZING and there's is never a time I'm not smiling from ear to ear when seeing his card tricks or any tricks for that matter. He still brigs out that child like awe when I watch him and trying to debunk of figure how he does some of the stuff he does I find totally not necessary, I'll keep enjoying it for what it is.

I always loved David Blaine and the street magic he did. The stunts always gave me anxiety. Never knew he received so much hate just for doing something he was passionate about. This was a great video ❤

It’s not hate but. He is a magician it’s not real. But when he claims it’s real. Opens him up for. Calling out his lies. Houdini. Was totally against this. He would bust him wide open. For lying that it’s real. The ice thing was a trick

It's not really "hate" per say, but more like the magic community were "upset" with him for using the term "stunts" for most of his appearances. It was disingenuous and the magic community is a very tight nit group (well, it used to be)... I was actually part of that community and I remember what everyone was saying and I agreed with them. We use the terms "illusion" and "tricks" for a reason. Most of these "so-called stunts" were more illusion and trickery than they were "stunts". I'm not saying that some (a small few) weren't "illusion or trickery" but most were. We all knew how he did them, like buried alive and frozen in time (to name a few), and when he came out (as well as publicists) saying that it was ALL real, that's when the community got upset with him and why his popularity dwindled (meaning, he was pretty much tossed aside).
Since these latter days of the Internet, the magic community doesn't really exist anymore because there are no more secrets. With that said, if you or anyone else would like to know more on the subject of Mr. Blaine, please feel free to ask. Lastly, this is not an attack on David as I think he's a very talented individual that was led astray from ... well, let's just say "the ones that have him under contract"

@@ChrisClemmons This is fascinating. Could you elaborate on how exactly the buried alive and frozen in time were tricks? Like what specifically did he do to fool audiences? And more specifically, is the ice pick through the skin a trick or holding the frog in his stomach? I watched him when I was a kid on the ABC show he did, so I've halfway followed him for years, but I don't really have any interest in magic in general (except the cool math from some of those card tricks) so I guess I've never really looked into it. Is there some sort of online database for how tricks are done or something? Especially since you say there's no more secrets. I've always thought the magic was cooler when I knew how it worked behind the scenes rather than not knowing.

What a lovely story. I saw his earlier stuff on tv but didn't realise he was basically pushing himself to death.

Big fan here. Dude's the real deal! Seen him perform up close, over a decade ago, and I was blown away.
