@@apeaapeI don't want to alarm you or assume intent, but you might have just had an unironic "bro visited his friend" moment, complete with the response face.
I didn't realise that at all and just assumed the two yelling at each other was an appropriate opening tone for a podcast that has the words "Silent Hill: Ascension" in its title.
Robert Jordan at first didn’t want someone continuing his work once he died, but his opinion on that changed and he basically told his wife-who was his editor of the series too-that if she saw someone who she thought could continue his work in an appropriate way, she could basically choose them to finish the series. Brandon Sanderson was chosen when she read a eulogy he wrote about Robert Jordan’s passing. She then read the first mistborn book and liked it. And he was also a big fan of the books. She let him look at Robert Jordan’s notes, and he did his best to keep in line with Robert Jordan’s vision, and Harriet was still one of the editors for the Sanderson wheel of time books. I believe there was a lot of care that went into the last couple wheel of time books. And from what I understand the end of the series is well liked (personally haven’t read them). I hope Miura’s vision of berserk is handled with the same care. It deserves it.
I've read the whole of Jordan's Wheel of Time and then re-read it before reading the Sanderson finishing books back to back. I think he did a good job. They feel fitting, it's not like there's a clear and jarring line of style change. Yeah, there are differences, but those books also feature some of the most monumental events in the history of that world, they would be different. There is somewhat of a feel of tidying up the plotlines in a few places, but it's literally about preparing and finishing ordeals before the Final Battle For The World.

"You cannot spoil truly exceptional art, because there's nothing like experiencing it." Absolute FACTS, John, thank you so much for saying this. I understand wanting to avoid spoilers but the internet's absolutely insane levels of spoiler paranoia like they permanently obliterate someone's enjoyment does a massive disservice to what a great story actually is.
Disagree. Spoiling it would not devalue it completely, but it's not the same thing. I recently had the ability to experience a few things without spoilers and it hits differently. And then whiny assholes who put spoilers in the title and/or thumbnail banded with UA-cam algorithm to spoil me the final boss of Shadow of the Erdtree before I could get to it myself due to electricity problems.
@@demilung I agree that its just good ettiquette to not put spoilers out in the open like that or to spoil people on things on purpose. If it happens on accident, that sucks. But it feels situational on if the spoiler actually ruins it totally for me, or if it simply makes my experience with the thing different but still equally good. There are even a few exceptional sitations where I had 0 interest in a piece of media until after I had heard a certain spoiler and that spoiler made me interested in the thing to begin with. It really depends, but I still think we should all do our best to give people the ability to opt-in to spoilers instead of them getting a piece of information against thier will.
The screamed I scrumpt when I realized that the Orgy had been removed from Ascension 😂. I also love that John didn’t even explain that Ascension actually ends with literally everyone dying but it tries to play it off as hopeful. He was that tired of talking about it 😂
To make Woolie feel better, the Berserk discussion in this episode was enough to satisfy me wanting to hear yall talk about it. To satisfy John, the Bojack discussion will make me pay for the patreon, damn you.
Before it starts, everyone should be aware that Legend of Galactic Heros is available on the Internet archive, so if you want to watch the first 2 episodes before hand you can. The quality it poor since it's a rip of a dvd from the time fans passed around burned on subtitled versions, and the video player does a lot of buffering which I've had to download the individual episodes to get around, but it works.
My day at work sucked today, so I'm very glad I get to hear my two favorite yappers in the most powerful book club on the internet. What a wonderful spot of light in my dark and stormy day.
To add onto the Omikron vs Ascension conversation, Omikron was at least an ORIGINAL idea and not skin-walking as a cynical mobile game trying to take money from people who are still trying to latch onto the Silent Hill brand
Hearing John describe Legend of the Galactic Heroes has me thinking of it in terms of Starcraft. Like Reinhart and Yang are two Starcraft players who's only interaction is playing against each other.
The idea of a demon being constantly astonished by the things his weird cult gets up to and going "oh shit, that's hardcore, I gotta respect that" is funny and interesting as fuck
The Corrupt Democracy vs Benevolent Autocracy argument feels so dumb to me because so many things need to unrealistically align for the autocracy to be benevolent in the first place.
There have been a few instances in history of autocracies that have been at least perceived as benevolent, but I agree that's unrealistic in the long run
It also becomes impossible for problems to be fixed unless the autocrat wants it. This is the basic problem with monarchy - you can have a good king, even a great king - what happens when his kid is Nero?
Tbh I don't believe woolie entirely hit the nail on the head with that description of the conflict imo. The two ideologies the show throws against each other don't align with the two main parties of the in universe conflict. I would say the ideological conflict the show tries to portray is idealism vs pragmatism.
In fairness, Robert Jordan knew he was dying, and made *extensive* outlines for how the series should end, which Brandon Sanderson worked from. He wasn't, to my knowledge, a personal friend of Jordan, but it's very aligned with what Jordan's vision was for the ending.
I actually went to Dick's (before it was called Karen's apparently) during a highschool trip to Boston and it was pretty fun. The waiter threw the silverware on the table and gave me a paper hat that said "practices making out with a pillow" and my friend who I was eating with got "this date sucks" it was so much fun. Though I did get terrible diarrhea from the burger I had and it kind of ruined my whole trip since I was basically in a shit sweat for the majority of the day. I don't think that was the intentional "shitty" experience they had in mind. Unless it was and that was some 500IQ shit they were running, in which case well played. You humiliated me inside and out.
3:38:47 As a Darkest Dungeon expert, I can answer this with a "pretty much, yeah." Darkest Dungeon 2 is not a bad game, but it is a very different one from Darkest Dungeon 1. Red Hook specifically said they wanted to make a new game and not "Darkest Dungeon but BETTER." The philosophy behind Darkest Dungeon 1 was going into a dungeon to fight the evil, while the philosophy design behind 2 was escaping the dungeon you were in. And while that is not what the game turned out to be, you can still see the essence of that design throughout the game At the risk of making some people mad, I'd compare it to Dark Souls 1 and 2. Like people passionately hate the second one while others passionately love it. They are very different games, but still good in their own right if you can get into them
Honestly you make me bad because compare the darkest games with the two souls games is such an AWFUL comparison, like genuinely horrid You could’ve used street fighter and people (especially THESE two guy’s audiences) would’ve perfectly understood
LOGH is my favorite series ever. Good on you for watching it. Also, sup Woolie. Played you in SamSho at WEMAD. I want a rematch against your Darli. You got me back in the gym, lol Also, my favorite Yang quotes: _“I despise those who hide in safety while they glorify war and patriotism and send other people to the battlefield while they relax behind the lines. It is a difficult thing to live with those people under the same flag.”_ and my all time #1 Yang banger _”If you could pardon my rudeness, your excellency, your words are as if the value of fire should be denied, simply because arson exists.”_
I know you won't see this John or Woolie, but Berserk to me, didn't end at Teardrop of Morning Dew. Berserk "ended" at Kouji Mori's "Kentaro Miura Memorial Manga" one shot. An autobiography manga of Mori's experience working with Miura, and as well as being his friend - and Miura's influence to him, as a mangaka and an individual. John and Woolie. I think reading that before going into "New Berserk" helps subsidise that fear a bit. Not because it guarantees that "New Berserk" will be as great as Miura'a Berserk, but at least it reassures that Berserk's legacy will be in appropriate hands. Miura's storytelling and thus his influence, is still not finished, it lives on through others like Mori who will be working on Berserk from now on.
Mother losing her faith was my comment on John stream. He was like OMG. I'm currently reading Berserk for the first time. I'm buying 1 Deluxe volume a month. I'm on 6/14. It's going to be a while for me before I come back to these Berserk discussions.
The show should have a segment where patreon recommend something for the two of you to experience to see if I can touch Berserk. I would recommend The Ravages of Time by Chen Mou, The World is Mine and Kiichi/VS by Hideki Arai
When Frank Herbert's son continued Dune, with the help of an acclaimed sci-fi author, they apparently had a manuscript to draw from. What they wrote was a 10000 year story encompassing expansions of the universe over 7 books, putting out more books than the original author himself. The result? A golem made exclusively from vomit.
@@johnrivers3813 Interestingly, the ones that take place 10k years before (The Butlerian Jihad) books are moderately enjoyable, even if they're made from an awful, unnecessary need to explain every little thing that was ever mentioned in the main series. I’m feeling the second game more.. it’s just that with it’s genre shift, there are some “growing pains” that need to be tackled It’s like 55/45 split and I can see 2 being my favorite with enough time , love and attention
For how much John calls Woolie's recommendations 'mean-spirited', I think he really doesn't get how fucked up it is to have some play Fear and Hunger's 'Terror and Starvation' modes as their first exposure to that game.
After the Berserk and Dokapon discussion, I so badly need Berserk-style fanart with Kathy as Griffith and John as Guts. I need it like SpongeBob needed water in the dome.
It was so wholesome when John had the courage to become emotionally vulnerable to his bitter rival in order to admit that he needed Woolie's help venturing into the new Berserk chapters. Alas, John the Schemer's mask had slipped by the end, revealing it was all a ploy for whatever dark plans he has for the next episode.
Hopefully John eventually finishes Galactic Heroes. While Berserk might be, at least to them, the greatest story ever told, Galactic Heroes is the greatest space opera ever made.

You can’t stop John from coming
- first in Dokapon
The screamed I scrumpt when I realized that the Orgy had been removed from Ascension 😂. I also love that John didn’t even explain that Ascension actually ends with literally everyone dying but it tries to play it off as hopeful. He was that tired of talking about it 😂
To make Woolie feel better, the Berserk discussion in this episode was enough to satisfy me wanting to hear yall talk about it.
To satisfy John, the Bojack discussion will make me pay for the patreon, damn you.
Literally the first 30 second 😂😂 this podcast needs to be awarded something
Before it starts, everyone should be aware that Legend of Galactic Heros is available on the Internet archive, so if you want to watch the first 2 episodes before hand you can. The quality it poor since it's a rip of a dvd from the time fans passed around burned on subtitled versions, and the video player does a lot of buffering which I've had to download the individual episodes to get around, but it works.
After a long day of Mom & Dad fighting it's always great to wind down with listening to Dad & Dad fighting
My day at work sucked today, so I'm very glad I get to hear my two favorite yappers in the most powerful book club on the internet. What a wonderful spot of light in my dark and stormy day.
"I need a bro" may genuinely be one of the nicest things I've ever heard John say to Woolie.
If only Kircheis were here maybe John wouldn't have missed that tournament
Bruh
To add onto the Omikron vs Ascension conversation, Omikron was at least an ORIGINAL idea and not skin-walking as a cynical mobile game trying to take money from people who are still trying to latch onto the Silent Hill brand
One way I always try to hook people into watching LOTGH is by saying " you are simply watching history unfold, fast and across all space".
"The legend ends and history begins"
My god this intro is a good sign
I love starting this and it just being yelling. Best final episode opening yet
Holding the angry mouth shape while trying not to bust up laughing 👌
Hearing John describe Legend of the Galactic Heroes has me thinking of it in terms of Starcraft. Like Reinhart and Yang are two Starcraft players who's only interaction is playing against each other.
That comparison is not a bad one.
Glad to see John got into LoGH, despite it's age and stiffness. Brilliant recommendation. It's one of these media things that stays with you.
This is the only show on the internet that gives me resting happy face. I realize I’ve been smiling uninterrupted this whole time
I'M SKIPPING TO THE END AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME (Then I'll watch the entire episode over the course of a few days.)
All of John's facial expressions during the Dokapon update are just so, so good
this is some next level (FINAL) energy
Skipping to the end on mute for a second just to cowardly rebel against what you guys said last podcast
The idea of a demon being constantly astonished by the things his weird cult gets up to and going "oh shit, that's hardcore, I gotta respect that" is funny and interesting as fuck
0:32 Mom Dad Please stop Fighting
I felt like a little kid again.
"I start coming first" said with the most accidental dom energy
The Corrupt Democracy vs Benevolent Autocracy argument feels so dumb to me because so many things need to unrealistically align for the autocracy to be benevolent in the first place.
There have been a few instances in history of autocracies that have been at least perceived as benevolent, but I agree that's unrealistic in the long run
There's also the fact that if a democracy is corrupt, it's usually not entirely accurate to label it as a democracy
AFAIK It’s not related at all to Dick’s other than the concept of intentionally rude service.
I'm just hoping that John talks about his recent experiences with Kathy and that he is for sure going to have to play omicron again
Edit: HE DID!
And while that is not what the game turned out to be, you can still see the essence of that design throughout the game
At the risk of making some people mad, I'd compare it to Dark Souls 1 and 2. Like people passionately hate the second one while others passionately love it. They are very different games, but still good in their own right if you can get into them
Honestly you make me bad because compare the darkest games with the two souls games is such an AWFUL comparison, like genuinely horrid
You could’ve used street fighter and people (especially THESE two guy’s audiences) would’ve perfectly understood
I did not expect to click this video and instantly be hit with Jon being SUPER RIGHT. WOOLIE YOU GOTTA WATCH IT
LOGH is my favorite series ever. Good on you for watching it. Also, sup Woolie. Played you in SamSho at WEMAD. I want a rematch against your Darli. You got me back in the gym, lol
Also, my favorite Yang quotes:
_“I despise those who hide in safety while they glorify war and patriotism and send other people to the battlefield while they relax behind the lines. It is a difficult thing to live with those people under the same flag.”_
and my all time #1 Yang banger
_”If you could pardon my rudeness, your excellency, your words are as if the value of fire should be denied, simply because arson exists.”_
"Ohh, I don't wanna just call this game dogwater."
An hour later
"Yeah this is worse than Omikron"
Mother losing her faith was my comment on John stream. He was like OMG.
I'm currently reading Berserk for the first time. I'm buying 1 Deluxe volume a month. I'm on 6/14. It's going to be a while for me before I come back to these Berserk discussions.
Great content, I had to watch the first minute twice and listen to each person individually
the story at the beginning about the karens diner needs the darkest dungeon stress icons and sounds edited in,
The show should have a segment where patreon recommend something for the two of you to experience to see if I can touch Berserk.
God post herbert dune is such a travesty
I'm not touching those books
@@johnrivers3813 Interestingly, the ones that take place 10k years before (The Butlerian Jihad) books are moderately enjoyable, even if they're made from an awful, unnecessary need to explain every little thing that was ever mentioned in the main series. But your response is warranted, given the rest of them.
Hard drop into violence.
Reminds me of getting woken up to my parents screaming
Best podcast
Fantastic episode as always! Really looking forward to the next one.
Karen's Diner sounds like the pinnacle of social anxiety horror
The author you were thinking of who finished The Wheel of Time is Brandon Sanderson
That ending was surprisingly sweet, even with with the promise of a concealed dagger hanging over it.
I look forward to every instance of VS wolves like a kid waiting for the first ending of his first favourite show, every episode feels like the final battle
knowing how John's Dokapon playthrough continued after this makes his whole shitting on the other players completely poetic.
I can’t imagine the new Berserk discussion will be that long. There’s only like, 12 chapters.
John’s dual recommendation is pretty sweet. Finally, some peace on this podcast.
Darkest Dungeon, let’s goooo (even though I like the first one more). The next episode’s gonna turn out great.
I’m feeling the second game more.. it’s just that with it’s genre shift, there are some “growing pains” that need to be tackled
It’s like 55/45 split and I can see 2 being my favorite with enough time , love and attention
For how much John calls Woolie's recommendations 'mean-spirited', I think he really doesn't get how fucked up it is to have some play Fear and Hunger's 'Terror and Starvation' modes as their first exposure to that game.
Oh no, playing a good game.
He didn't actually tell Woolie to play Terror and Starvation though! And his suggestion was to just get to Crow Mauler.
Great podcast guys! This was such a good episode!
After the Berserk and Dokapon discussion, I so badly need Berserk-style fanart with Kathy as Griffith and John as Guts. I need it like SpongeBob needed water in the dome.
Watch John's Dokapon videos on Regular Eyepatch Wolf, you'll love the intro
It was so wholesome when John had the courage to become emotionally vulnerable to his bitter rival in order to admit that he needed Woolie's help venturing into the new Berserk chapters. Alas, John the Schemer's mask had slipped by the end, revealing it was all a ploy for whatever dark plans he has for the next episode.
I’ve been thinking about this podcast all week. Finally!
I accidentally turned on 2x playback speed right as they started arguing at the beginning. I messed up my voice from laughing so hard.
Hopefully John eventually finishes Galactic Heroes. While Berserk might be, at least to them, the greatest story ever told, Galactic Heroes is the greatest space opera ever made.
