Thanks for the video. I just bought this refugium from Amazon and I can't wait to get it up and running on my 25 gallon salt water tank. Going to add a fistful of algae and copepods with some live rock... Hopefully it'll help with phosphates and the copepods will spill over and help feed my fish at the same time.
Congrats on the new HOB refugium. I can vouch for quick results as macro algae grows fast when there is phosphate, nitrate, and correct lighting. You should see results in a week or two especially with algae in your tank. I had to stir sand and wipe the glass everyday even with several snails. They(snails) did a great job on the live rock! Anyway good luck with fuge. You might have to rotate your Chaeto if you go that route.
Great video. I've had mine running for about a week now. I loaded it up with chateo. The only problem I'm seeing is the water going into the box is creating micro bubbles from the splash that get trapped all over the chateo. I have to keep poking the algae to get rid of the bubbles.
I haven't noticed this problem but I'm resetting mine up with ceramic rings in the middle chamber and nothing in the return chamber. I'm going to add live copepods soon. The micro bubbles may settle out. i'll do another video with my new setup and see if I have micro bubbles. Thanks for the comment.
It is no longer available on Amazon or Ebay and has been discontinued on the Premium aquatics website. You can buy a Fluval breeder box with the pump and then buy a refugium light seperately which is basically what the Finnex multipurpose box was. I also looked at other Websites but could not find it. It must be discontinued. Sorry.
I actually haven't checked but now that you ask I'm going to break out the Nitrate test kit to see. I can say that by the second week I noticed a large reduction in mat brown algae on the glass and on the sand. I'm going to do a follow up video and will post my water test results. Thanks for asking.
Sure as long as the pump is submerged. It's about 7" below the rim of my tank. Also, the box is 10" Long X 5" wide so you will want to measure to make sure it fits somewhere on the sump. I hope that helps.
Yes except it hangs on your tank. F.Y.I. It's best use for a reef application is as a biological filter using a macroalgae which will "suck up" nitrate and phosphate! Thus keeping all the nuisance algae away from your corals and nitrogen/phosphate at minimal levels which really helps the corals. Also, others take this a step further and infuse copepods to naturally feed fish and corals from the fuge. Happy fish keeping!
Thanks so much for this video, very informative. I am just awaiting my delivery of this item. Just a few silly questions now :) I plan on dosing the box with Copepods once its set up, will i need to continue doing it every so often? Also do the Copepods make their own way into the main Aquarium in the return water? I am planning on getting a few Mandarins which of course need a steady flow of the little beasts for feeding.
Great questions. I have not dosed my refugium with Copepods but I'm definitely going to. I have heard and read from many others that the whole point of having a separate area for macro algae and Copepods is so that it is self replenishing. I can vouch for the macro algae. When I do get Copepods I'm going to put the live rock fragments back in(they are in the main aquarium for now). Anything porous should work as a home for the Copepods to live in/around. The Copepods will make it into the aquarium. I don't see anyway of preventing that. The question is will any remain. Let me know how it goes when you get the Copepods? Until then happy reef keeping. P.S. I love the dragonets. Very striking
I have just about the same exact hob fuge set up but Its the fluval breeder box. I filled the last chamber to the top with porous ceramic media. I didn't add sponge at the intake I didn't want to disrupt the flow. How is this working for you? I just put mine together today so it will be a while before I know if it's effective at all.
So far so good. The flow in the box isn't enough to tumble the Chaeto so I turn/rotate it by hand once a day. It is growing fast and I only run the lights 8 hours from 11p.m. to 7a.m. I also took out the live rock fragments. The ceramic media is a good idea. Let me know how that works because I have a lot of it brand new.
looks comparable but the Finnex comes with the much needed full spectrum light to grow macroalgae. The lights can make up the difference in cost depending on which one you get. I think i'm going to try the Fluval box for my 40 breeder reef tank. Thanks for the comment.

Cool i seen a copepod hotel om the interweb the other day might fit inside the fuge to give your pods living space
I'm going to check it out because I think this is the next logical step with the fuge. It could only help grow the corals faster. Thanks for the info.
Nice vid, very detailed. Didn't even think of a hang on option. worth the sub!
Thanks for the comment. So far it's working good.

Do you have the link to amazon or where to buy it? I can't seem to locate the right one that you have.

grat video and idea, question, how much low your Nitrate in your aquarium?

Do you think you could hang this refugium box inside your sump somewhere? Instead of hanging on the side of the display tank?

I can use this Box as a sump correct? Fill it with Media etc?

Where can I get 1?
I got mine on Ebay but they are also available on Amazon.
That’s a fluval breeder box ($15.00) and a $8.00 pump.
