I've used a soldering iron to make the holes, and washed it down proper. Easier with the iron
You should always cover the acrylic surface your drilling to with painters tape to assist in minimize cracking
A HOB refugium is a great idea for an AIO tank. It creates some nice diversity and looks aesthetic at the same time. Nice job Matthew..
Matt and Thomas are putting the majority of BRS video production on their backs. Matt is a one man show! Respect man. Your craft continues to get better and better.
Haha, seems that way for sure! But not to worry, Ryan has been working his but off on the year two of 52 weeks of reefing, as well as a huge lighting project, so get ready for a whole host of videos coming soon!
I HIGHLY recommend using a drill bit designed for plexi glass or plastic, drill slowly and keep the bit clean... or you can melt a hole using a cheap soldering iron for the price of a drill bit 🙂
This is awesome! Would have never thought of the soldering iron! Thanks Spicy Reef for helping us all out!
Could you put one like that in the sump if we don't have the room/flow for its own section
You bet! 👍
Does an in tank refugium need a it's own light or is your tank light ok? Someone please help
Does reef lighting work? Or does it need its own light?
How would you perform water change?
If I close my eyes, It sounds just like Ryan.
Itd be nice if brs made a kit to buy everything together if they dont already... another option instead of drilling holes, try using a soldering iron to melt holes.
Yes, you are the second person to mention soldering. A great idea! I hear there are also drill bits designed for plexi glass/plastic, which I had no idea about! An aio kit would be pretty cool actually.
5:05 what is the function of the sand in the refugium ?
I have a hang on refugium that returns the water from gravity
I just love this guy. I've been slowly preparing my first tank 75gal. I can't wait to go live
Subtitles option of the video ?
Is there a specific sand to use for a refugium
Sell that gear 😂😂😂
Great guide to some available in-tank refugium! Thanks for the DIY portion too!
To properly machine the Acrylic, you need to get the cast kind.
I just set up a in tank refugium like you did in this video but I’m getting some surface scum in the specimen cup any thoughts on how to get more flow in the refugium
You could consider adding a small pump like the Sicce Mimouse to get the water moving a bit more.
They interfere with tank lids, and I find fuges on nano tanks near useless.
They certainly do interfere with tank lids! But I guess if you were planning on keeping one long term, like with my anemones, you could diy a fix!
Great video Matt! 👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏼
Thanks! 👍
I love this guy.
Thanks! We do too!!
Great video, as always, just to point - buying container and drilling few holes is not exactly diy....
Diy would be cut acrilyc, making holes, slots, gluing pieces, making hanging rail or similar.... That is diy, this is only making holes in something that someone else buildt.... ;)
True, but for Matthew, that's about the limit of his "DIY" knowledge!
lmao who would ever do this
