Lol it is complicated, he was just able to simplify it on talking points. Many people end up with dosing nightmares and uncontrolled spikes. But truthfully, key is just consistency, on water changes will control most of that, but many don't like to do that.
What makes this reef tank is the aquascape. proper master piece

Beautiful tank! I have a BioMaster Thermo 650 for my planted tank and it’s amazing. Oase just recently released the 850 model and I might give that a try for my next reef tank because of this video.

I’ve been at this since I was 7 years old. Grandfather gave me a 10 gallon tank for my birthday. So almost 50 years at this. For me it’s about filtration flow and dedication to cleaning. I invested in cleaning tools and a set schedule for my aquariums I currently have. 20, 75, 90, 180, and two 225 gallon tanks. I only speak for myself but I use canister filters for all my saltwater aquariums. I water change each aquarium every other week, on a rotating schedule since I have several lol and clean every filter once a month. My levels are always perfect. I also use a lot of live rock, a large team of cleaner shrimp and I oversized the canisters because the flow ratings are marketing hype. The ratings are based on zero pump height with no media basically setting the pump next to the aquarium and empty, how much water can the pump push. Setting a water pump under an aquarium (as almost all are except for custom setups) makes the pump work harder. Basic physics. All filtration media also make the pump work harder, further reducing flow of gallons per hour.
With all that said, a properly sized canister, cleaned regularly, more than gets the job done.
A lot of guys with UA-cam channels show you that they clean their canister filters once every 3-6 months or longer.

Had to subscribe! Contemplating my next build & "want" to try a canister for the first time. After watching another youtuber (simple aquariums) & her success, it's awesome to see another youtuber with such a massive amount of sps looking happy & healthy from a canister set up! I think this may push me over the edge to give it a shot!
What a stunning tank/aquascape. Eventually want to get into reefing as the next level of progression going from cold water, generic tropical, and now currently African Cichlids. Always found sumps to appear quite complex, especially with the amount of kit required, not to mention the cost of it all as well as buying a specific tank and cabinet that is sump-ready. If I can get results like that with a canister filter then that's a real eye opener as I have 90% of the kit already in theory.

Good luck on your rock smashing and re-building adventure! In hindsight, I wish I'd broken my rocks down much further and less bulky. Would have ended up with more negative space along with more mounting points for Coral.
That was even after building it before getting rock wet and trying many combinations and builds before settling on what I am using now.

Beautiful tank and setup I run a c160 marineland canister on a 10gal tank for years mechanical filtration coarse,medium,polishing and Matrix in all other trays I have a separate surface skimmer tho I like your canister with the pre filter Keep it Super Simple I like 👍

Something which has worked really well for someone, doesn't mean it will work for others too. Basic thumb rule in reef keeping I've learnt in years..... lol. Im confident in having a silent, clean, SPS tank and keeping things in sump. I have tried things with canister filter but found it tough to attend with that kind of setup. This is my personal experience and maybe I was not doing things right with canister filer.
omg, I have a 20 gallons with over the top MarineLand filter. a switch over from my fresh water tank. so far so good, but again, its only 20 gallons. your tank is amazing.

And, just a question, do you change zeolite sometime? Every month or never?
I change the zeolite every 4 to 6 weeks at around 70%
Beautiful tank man... I use to have a 60 gallons reef tank sps dominant with a "sump" but the only things I had on it was a HOB aqua clear filter and a HOB skimmer with the heater and the return pump... And for the dosing I did it manually once a week and the same for maintenance.
Awesome love this take on filtration, hear too many mentions of canister filters/sand beds/filter socks being Nitrate factories but this is only of they are not cleaned!

The media is a big factor as well.
When you use the standard sponges and plastic media you wont have much anaerobic bacteria.
So you wont have any bacteria breaking down nitrates.
Only ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate.
Swapping out the cheap media with better media like Seachem Matrix or Eheim Substrate pro will solve a lot as well.
@@dennisvanopstal7360 the matrix is not a nitrate factory , i'm skeptical that it can really work in a reef tank

You have used your own mind and experience to create a great functioning reef system.Probably upset a load of so-called experts who are still paying off credit cards for their own set-ups.Light,filtration and movement are the basics of good reefkeeping as you have shown .
Thank you Chris, I know it may seem foreign to many but this aquarium still used the basic principles. You area right about it being able to save costs, I have figured out anyone can do a similar setup for very little money using other brands.

Nice alternative for reefing-I’ve been seriously considering running same sized reef using HOB filter (seachem tidal 110 packed with filter pad, bio media, carbon, gfo, zeolite), algae reactor (like your tunze), and no skimmer w/ weekly 10% water changes. Aesthetically not as clean as your setup but I do fear the inevitable prolonged power loss and anaerobic reaction in canisters, which would be avoided using HOB filter. Had a canister that wiped out a freshwater planted tank when it restarted after prolonged power loss and I wasn’t present to clean it out before power was restored. 1000 ways to skin a cat…

If you live in NSW, QLD, VIC, corals can be very affordable

Great job. To the point.
I had a 120 gal. With a 40 gal. Tank in the cabinet under. Worked with two suck/spray tubes that disappeared into the tank corner obviously carrying water out for cleaning and back in to the main tank. Had 3 types of filtration within the 40 gal. Which was all gravity fed thru them pumped back into the main tank... all I ever had to do was clean the tubes, 20-30%Water change once a month. Oh & switch out the sheet filtration on top of the 40 gal. maybe once every 6 months.. r Was by far the easiest set up I've ever run and ran so clean. Bio balls within the 40 gallon allowed for the larger water change when you did do the change. By far the best setup I've ever seen or worked with

If I want to hook up a algae reactor AND a chiller, how do I do it?
I had a tank setup with a canister filter and anemones sps LPS. I think that you should use two canister filters bridging them. This will make your tank run top shape
Stunning mate. I used to run external filters on a discus tank and always thought it should be possible to make the switch to marine. Currently running a small water box reef but may upgrade one day and would certainly think about this. What lights you running? Sorry if it's been asked already but couldn't see it.
I just decided to subscribe to yr channel, I don't have a salt water aquarium even that I think that they are amazing much more pretty then the fresh water tanks, I say this because I have 180 gallon, I hope that you won't have problems with the person's in the salt water that manufacture very fancy equipments because normally who has salt water tanks have a lot of money, just like persons that need a Ferrari or Lamborghini etc.... Very well done, the point is that, people don't want to be cleaning socks or sponges every 2/3 days and other things.
With the right media a canister filter works great. I maintain 0 nitrates and .15 phos with my 25g mixed reef. Very happy , daily fed fish

My guy, power outage is power outage, it doesn't matter which filter you have, unless there is backup, you are dead in the water. And this someone that is pro canister.
Regarding the Feedback you've asked for,
I did run a canister Filter in the past to fight dinoflagellates in my old tank back then when it was new (very coarse Coral gravel did the job) to be honest If the filter sponges are cleaned regulary its hard to build up nitrates.. the only reason i'm not using it at the moment ist that i had to replace the Bio Media from time to time because i had a lot of tiny sponges and calcareous featherworms growing really fast in there

as a sump guy myself I always suggest ppl use the oase filters for there pre-filter and heater options.
Q: if power outages on a canister does not the back flow fill up the filter keeping it alive?
Q: how often do you have to clean the glass lilly pipes? how does the surface skimmer work in SW? does it float more?

I’d imagine by hand using pre-bottles RO/DI water or he is still using an RO/DI system to create the water. I have a quarantine tank his salt will not dissolve as his H2O evaporates and when he does water changes it will pull saltwater from his tank and he tops off with salt water 🤷♀️ but I dunno - I’m just chilling, watching reef tank videos and 🍜 😂😅

Love to see a video which shows you don't need to spend a fortune on equipement to run a reef tank. Steady maintenance and aquarium knowledge is worth a lot. I am curious how much maintenace a canister filter needs. The little spunge looks to me if it will not take very small particles so I assume you will have some detritus build up in and underneath the filter media. How frequently do you maintain this?
It is very clean, I tip out the filter once after 5 months and it had very little waste. I think the bacteria does a very good job of cleaning too.

Bought a Biomaster 850 for my 40 breeder after watching this video. It's working great and the prefilter setup makes maintenance so easy. My question, Mike: My tank is only about 4 months running and I am a new reefer. All my water parameters are good and stable for a mixed reef tank (Ca 420, Mg 1350, dKH 9.5, pH 8.2, NO3 10, PO4 0.03, Temp 79, Salinity 1.025), but I am having trouble trying to grow coralline algae, as well as SPS and certain LPS corals. After having a few corals die (birdsnest, micromussa lord, favia) between 2-9 weeks, I am not purchasing any more SPS and LPS until I see that coralline algae is growing. I do see coralline as an indicator to let me know when my tank is ready to support SPS/LPS. For seeding my tank with coralline, I took a nice amount of coralline scrapings from my LFS, ground it as fine as possible with a mortar and pestle, and dispersed into my tank with the filter off and the wavemaker on for 6 hours.
So ....
Do you think having a protein skimmer, along with the biomaster canister, will improve my water stability and parameters so that coralline/SPS/LPS will grow and thrive in my tank? I just bought a Tunze 9004 DC on Amazon and will receive it in a few days. Hope you can help.

Hi Mike, I'm currently running the biomaster 850 on my mixed reef and I've just installed the same glass inlet and outlet but the surface skimmer is drawing in a lot of air no matter what I do with the little valve at the bottom. Any tips on stopping this from happening??? Love your tank and what you have done with it is inspiring.

Great video. Just wondering how you clean your sponge every 2 to 3 days. Do you rinse in ro-di water or salt water or just tap water ? Good to see a local Perth guy sharing reef keeping knowledge.
You can just use tap water and squeeze it dry no worries.

Hey bud, I've been thinking long and hard but running the same type of filtration that you're running on a new tank, I'd love to hear more about running a canister filter in tandem with a algae reactor. Is the flow quite low coming out the reactor and back into your display? Hats off to you though, as I've never really seen this configuration on any tank, and it seems to be doing a beautiful job!
