I'm with you Alyssa, nothing wrong with the sheer stocking or sheer socks. I recently watched another YT video stating they are frumpy, aging, and not on trend. To me, you support, wear what you want, and then show examples that prove it. Thank you Alyssa, fantastic video. Loved both 💗
I agree. My hands and feet get cold long before the rest of me, so why would I have heavier shoes and trousers / skirt / dress, but no socks or tights?
Agreed! There are good reasons to wear tights with certain fabrics and silhouettes. Bare legs can look awkward in some stylings. Love your style, Allysa!Allyson! XO ❤
As a high school business teacher, I tried to model appropriate attire. Since I had to move around the room a lot (computers, etc) I really needed comfy shoes most days. Loafers were it for me. One of my favorite uniforms was a blazer, button up or light sweater, tights and and above the knee skirt. Years later many students I see tell me how important it was to see how dressing the part IS important. So glad you did this series on loafers!
I‘ll add that some of the reasons these combinations work on you is because your hair is dark, and the loafers are dark. Like, for instance, in the little white dress outfit, your hair balances loafers. Where in someone who is blonde or has white hair a really light tan or ivory loafer, would do the same.
Exactly! I would have looked blank and ill in black top, any black top, thus I would wear ivory loafers with beige top, for instance ( as far as the midi skirt outfit is concerned)
Love your use of tights in this video. Wondering if you could do a video dedicated to styling tights, and how to purchase tights that will stand the test of time instead of being a “wear once and they’re destroyed” accessory.
I love how your videos are so inspiring AND practical! Very useful observations here on socks, which are soooo difficult to figure out. Would be so good to get a video about adapting styles to winter in Canada. Boots for the commute to shoe in the office, with ankle pants for example. We see ankle pants for fall/winter fashion all the time, ALWAYS bare foot in shoes… tights, socks, footwear for commute …. Thanks !
Is that a sweater for your couch? Love it!! See that? Love loafers with trousers! The turtleneck makes it look more balanced, verses the slouchy look all over. Because of my height, ankle pants can make me look a little shorter, so I like my trousers a little below my ankle, while still being able to see the loafer. With dresses or skirts the length at my knee works best with the loafer for me. Love the idea of sheer colored socks with my trousers! Thanks for a great video, Alyssa!!
I LOVE your look today!! The black and white with the updo is so elegant on you. Can you please share about the black and white corset / top you have on?
@@felibox785 looks like it - there's a tab of white in the front middle that covers the middle of the "bra" so it looks like a top instead of a bustier over a bra.
Am age 77 (slender and toned) and as do wear sweater dresses; much appreciated your clarification on hoisery as so many influencers feel that such is not on trend, old fashioned etc. even paired with the latest styles of garment or footwear.
How cool is this video? Who would know this was even possible!?❤🙏I will have to do some digging and I love the sexy librarian vibe of all of these looks! Also Elizabeth Shue in the movie in The Saint did a cream on cream sweater and midi with loafers and socks... Onto Part 1❤ Thank you!
You are right--the sheer, natural tone is underrated and is so often just the right look. This is vlog is based on an unusual but much appreciated topic!
Alyssa thank you for this video, I was looking for help with styling my loafers with a skirt and this is it. When you changed out the cream cardigan with the black turtleneck, the outfit was suddenly more elevated. I loved this. I also recall a past video of yours where you styled a printed shirtdress with your loafers and that gave me the courage to try it instead of just wearing loafers with pants.
Like you said, Alyssa, we're all different. I start with questions, then based on my answers I move to the answers (rules). Some questions, that have helped me are... What messages am I trying to send? Do I want people to think that I'm startling or stunning? Do I want them to focus on me or on my clothes? In videos like this one I'd love for you to also suggest how can women with different body shapes and sizes can adapt each look. Thank you so much for this interesting video and as others have said, your hair style is beautiful1
Love this one… even more than part 1. Thanks as always for the style info & inspo! Especially the black turtleneck with midi skirt look🖤💛 as well as the mini!😉
Perfect timing! I have a couple mid heeled lug loafer saved in my cart but unsure how to style it. Im petite and not sure if the visual weight will make my short stature more stumpy looking. Any tips on how to avoid /work around this dilemma
Just a suggestion- if you’re not sure, buy some cheap/second hand loafers and have a play for a few months to a year. If you like them, you can buy higher quality ones. If you decide they’re not for you, it wasn’t a big expense. That’s what I’m trying at the moment.
I found this series super helpful! And timely. I have a pair of loafers similar to the ones you own, but I was having a hard time with the balance aspect. Thanks for this! I would actually like to see other outfit options periodically that you come up with as you go along. Same idea is fine, but sometimes, a concrete example is even more helpful and inspirational.
Let me just say that nude loafers (specifically cork in my case) are awesome when it's warm enough to go sockless. In cooler weather, I switch out of an almond-toed, eggplant-hued loafer that goes great with my skirts. Every loafer tells a story, LOL! Thanks so much for sharing this!
Going to get my sheer tights back out, love the idea of patterned ones with a sweater dress! I'd want to add a black bag to balance out the loafers with the white dress at the end but that's just me!
Alyssa! Of course I watched the video and appreciate the content but i was VERY focused on what you were wearing! I need details, girl! That blazer?! Was that a bustier or strapless top with a black bra?! Youre killing me! I need to know/see this ootd! 🖤😉
I so much like this video! I am owning my first pair of loafers since some weeks and I am still struggeling with styling them altough I really like them. It's so funny, today I am wearing the exakt same outfit as your outfit nr. 2 with the black turtle and the exact same wide leg trousers. I am wearing my loafers but it feels a bit off, as you said. With the cropped trousers it looks so much better! But the other day I styled my loafers with a cropped trousers and socks, but (!) with a part of skin seen between socks and trousers, it looks so wired 😅 Thanks for your inspirations!
I'm about to buy my first pair of loafers (melvin hamilton regine 22 in black) after many years of wearing low sneakers. I don't have super skinny calves so I'll be only wearing pants with them or long skirts. Thanks for the video
I have a burgundy satin midi skirt, and many black sweaters to choose from that will work. I have a black patent loafer. I plan to wear this to a Christmas party. It's cold where I live. Should I wear a sheer nude stocking, or a sheer black stocking? 🤔
Sheer ankle socks: this summer I noticed at a fancy outdoor restaurant in southern Oregon one of the servers wore a pair of black Dansko shoes (they might have had an open back) with a pair of sheer black socks that went about halfway from her ankles to her knees. It was kind of a startling look (to me), but she carried it off magnificently! After then I kept looking on Amazon for a pair of sheer black socks like hers; couldn't find the perfect ones.
Omg, that last cotton white dress w the loafers is one I’m going to try! The super girly isn’t my style, so pairing a dress like that w ballerina flats wldn’t work for me. I love the juxtaposition w the loafers though! Great video… thx again!
Thanks Alyssa for the video, well done! There is only one thing I don't understand: in the outfit with the miniskirt I see 3 coulors: red, black and white. Doesn't it go against 'the rule' of maximum 2 colours? In any case, for me the 3 colours are too much...
Sheer socks / stockings are great. Bold socks especially the white socks feel like a school uniform. That's really hard to pull off because that edgy style is very niche and looks juvenile (but imo would look nice on a younger person with a cute face).
Would you wear loafers with slimmer cropped pants or mom jeans (voluminous top but slimmer bottom)? I just realized I have a very similar pair of loafers that I hadn't worn at all this season, and would love to try some looks! (too bad it's already puring rain season where I live :'( ) Thanks for the inspiration!
In my experience as a petite, socks that match my shoes rather than my trousers make my legs look even shorter. I feel more in proportion with the horizontal line at the vamp of the shoe and not at the bottom of the trousers.
so the "technical" rule is to match the sock to the trouser as this elongates - it really depends on your proportions and what you would like to show off! I do agree that the line break with a dark sock and light trouser is strong - it comes down to proportions and personal preference!
I'm surprised so many women in the comments love and wear loafers. I never figured out how to wear them without looking like a middle-aged man playing golf with the secretary of defense on the weekends. Same with the oxford shoes. Love the look, but as a woman one can only really wear them with a skinny pant.
I don’t have a pair that fits me anymore (pregnancy changed that!) but I LOVED pairing oxfords with skirts and dresses (and tights, both sheer and opaque) back when I had a pair that fit me. I usually did it with knee-length or higher bottoms (which also doesn’t currently suit my lifestyle). How I miss a good Oxford …
I love loafers. I'm actually really confused as to how they're difficult to style. I just wear them with everything! Although I wear trousers or jeans 99% of the time. So I guess I don't wear them with dresses or skirts and I usually wear trainers with shorts as I find shoes without socks uncomfortable. However I would wear loafers regardless of the style of the trousers. I have quite big feet so styles such as Mary Janes and Ballerinas just don't look good on me. (Even if I could find some to fit!) And I don't like the socks showing with these types of shoe. But I am really confused when you say loafers with wide leg trousers is a specific type of look. What actually does that mean? Specific in what way? Every look is a 'specific' look. I'm not trying to be awkward. I just really don't understand what you are getting at. I think perhaps you are hinting at something but I'm just not understanding what it is? I always wear loafers with my wide leg trousers but now I'm at a loss to understand what sort of vibe that means I'm giving off? I'm 57 btw if that helps. And I've been wearing loafers on and off with all my trousers and jeans since my teens. I never realised that they didn't 'work' with some styles of bottoms.
I've just googled decontractee. So confused now. Literally last week I went to a funeral. I wore a black suit with wide leg trousers and loafers and I felt smart and elegant. Never realised that some people would think that I was dressed 'relaxed and casual'. I never wear slim fitting trousers. I think that wide legs are so much more polished and elegant. I'm at an absolute loss now as to what shoes would have been appropriate. And actually a tiny bit upset. I thought I was polished and put-together but now it seems that people think differently? I'm guessing that perhaps for younger people they would think that heels were the smart choice and that loafers are casual by virtue of being flat shoes? But for older people it is often very uncomfortable if not physically impossible to wear heels anymore. Flat shoes are the only option. From that point of view loafers seem to me to be a smart choice and not at all decontractee. Perhaps it's just looking at it through a different lens?
She was referring to the entire look where the shoes were combined with wide leg trousers and the loose grey sweater. A full suit with loafers is a completely different look. This can look look very cool and slightly edgy in its masculinity.
I’m glad you switched out the slouchy sweater with the turtleneck. The all over slouch is so sloppy… and then you add loafers and it’s a lazy late 80s dated look. You’ve refined it with the tailored look of the belt and turtleneck. Personally, I think wide trousers do loafers a disservice. Wide leg pants look best when showing feet skin like a pointed flat. The midi bronze skirt with soft sweater could have just used a nice thick hefty dark belt to add tension. Maybe one that matches the shoe.

The grey and camel pants would be better with chunky sneakers, because of the vibe comes from the color combinations and fits.
